I go to the Rock Steady Classes 3-4 times a week. This is for people with Parkinson's and it is so open and friendly. The instructors are Brian and Cesar and they don't push you if you say you can't do something. We do exercises, bag work and TRX, just what we Parkies need. I cannot recommend SC Boxing highly enough! I am in week 5 of the 6-week best self challenge and it's been an awesome experience. Brian is a stellar instructor - he gives clear instructions and demos, structures the arc of the course really well (increasing difficulty as we progress), stays on time, and is motivating without being annoyingly over enthusiastic. Bought the 2 week intro for $99. Arrived and was told by female instructor that I had to register for class online, but that I could stay. I assume this is for Covid reasons, but then she reached out her hand to shake mine, so social distancing clearly wasn't a concern. There were 5 people in the class (including me), so the admonishment about registering ahead of time seems a bit silly, especially since most gyms are no longer requiring pre-reg. During warmup, I explained that I have a big plate and 8 screws pinning my left wrist and arm together and I was told to modify (which I do anyway). Then the class was told to partner up for mitts. Since there was an odd number of us, I asked If I could please not have a partner bc of my arm. Then I had to explain that I can't have someone hitting my arm hard, but you'd think that being an exercise coach that she would have realized this. I was told, "We do a lot of mitt work in here, so you can partner up, or do your own workout, or leave." I'm a-ok doing my own workout (especially as a retired competitive athlete) and was anticipating this, but not in a gym where new potential members are met with such attitude. So, you have to pre-reg for classes where you can count the low number of attendees on one hand, social distancing isn't adhered to, and the instructor isn't interested if you're injured. You have several options for boxing gyms in the area, so go check those out and don't bother with paying this gym $99 to be insulted. They seem to be perfectly happy not expanding their morning class past four attendees. read more

You guys know how I roll with reviews. Far from serious shieyt. So just keep that in mind with this review. I am such a tubba lard now from what I used to be. Commuting 2-3 hours for work daily for the past couple of years had me invest in a Hello Kitty bib eating Chipotle burrito bowls in my stick shift car for dinner so my ass ain't hangry for the poor "exclusive biatch" of mine when I get home. Let go of management this year after 13 years and decided it's "me" time and took up kick boxing after work. Going with a yelper friend from way back after reconnecting helps with the motivation and encouragement. Although you would say we are in the class more to be active and have fun than to go out there and kick ass or spar. But our confidence levels and technique are improving and I can fit back into some of my clothes. Brian is cool because he in himself is motivated for his students. Can't get any better than that. And if you don't like the music that's playing he'll ask what you want and switch it up for you. Can I get Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name" please....he understands our silly but won't hesitate to put us back in check: "WHY'D YOU STOP!" Brian has his sillies too and it helps to know he doesn't feel he's above anyone. The other students are great, some warmer than others but with my bipolar days it's all good cuz I can go either way. I actually told a prestigious psychiatrist colleague I'm diagnosing myself and he just laughed. Charlie! The sweetest dog ever. He's at the gym a lot and just chills out. He is an add on bonus. Extra fun when he has the farts and everyone just looks at each other like....was it you? I have been wanting to get into kickboxing because I love boxing and martial arts. My friend and I really wanted to do something more than just hike; we'd end up eating it all back LOL So, I suggested this place since I passed it several times. I am so glad I did; I get to see my friend J, Brian (whose an exellent teacher), and Charlie who is the sweetest being ever. Brian gets our goofiness and has a little Bruce Lee in him-he's kind, chill, patient, and motivated to have his students learn and learn safely. I love doing spin kicks, the one on one training so technique improves, and I can give it my all. Other places I have been have an intimidating vibe; but here I didn't feel that way. There is a positive energy from my first time and it's fun to come to class every time. I feel stronger, I feel better, I feel more disciplined, more confident, and I see how far I've come from major health problems that kept me from exercising in 2012. I started training with Brian about 7 months ago. I was looking for an alternative to running because of an injury and I had done some boxing before so I know what a great workout it is. I'm also a personal trainer and was looking for someone who knew what they were doing. I wanted a great workout without the risk of further injury. I wasn't disappointed. While I hadn't really planned on long term training, I'm still there twice per week finding myself looking forward to boxing drills, resistance training and core work. It is a brilliant addition to my current workout program. Brian pushes me harder than I'd push myself and thats what I'm looking for in a workout. I was introduced to this place from a friend, she kept on saying how awesome it was. So I drove over and talked to Brian, the owner, he seemed very nice and said my first class was free so I could check it out and I have been coming for over 3 months now. The class size makes things very personal. Plenty of room in the studio, lots of bags so no sharing needed. There are many different classes offered: boxing, kick boxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, MMA advance fighting as well as some kids classes. I love coming to this place Brian has inspired me to create a better me. I came to the boxing class for fitness purposes and with Brians classes as well as his wealth of health knowledge I have lost over 15 pounds. I have never seen an instructor get so happy envisioning healthy results in each of us. From day one, Brian was beaming with smiles, because he saw the potential in all of us, no matter what background or goals we had concerning skills and fitness. Not only have I gained strength, balance and confidence, I've also gained a great outlet for stress. RencentIy moved to Santa Cruz for a month. Unfortunately I found Santa Cruz Boxing & MMA much too late. I had the pleasure of taking 3 private and 3 group classes with Brian. Brian's gym and his teaching approach is awesome. Fun, technical and a great workout. I recommend taking a group class to warm up and then taking a private class with him. Brian instantly sees what you are missing/doing wrong and teaches you the right way to do it. I wish I were still in Santa Cruz so that I could take more classes at this gym. This gym and Brian seem to be a hidden secret. It's summer and its slow but if this trainer and gym were in a more populated area it would be packed and have a huge following. I started working out with Bryan over a year ago doing personal one on one sessions. I had wanted to try boxing for a long time but was nervous about the attitude of boxing gyms. Bryan broke that mold for me. His gym is always clean and organized. Bryan also customized a work out for me that works, he worked around the issues I have and helped me understand boxing theory, technical aspects of boxing and made me see it isn't just who can punch the hardest. I was surprised by how much I enjoy the mental work out of boxing! On top of all that I have gained muscle, strength, and definition to my arms shoulders and core. My wife started noticing it too and now she has started class with Bryan also. My kids have been doing classes for a few weeks and beg to go to the kids class every day! I've been coming to this place 3 times a week for about 3 months now. A year ago, the kickboxing class I was taking was canceled and it took me all this time and trying out different studios to find this one. But I love it! There are classes offered mornings or afternoons at convenient times for your typical 9-to-5er. (Class time was the main thing that got me to check this place out. Most other places held classes in the middle of the day.) I take kickboxing, but there are also boxing classes and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as classes for teens. Now this isn't the cardio kickboxing that I kept encountering at gyms where you bop around in place to today's pop hits. This class is focused on punches, kicks, footwork, and combos with heavy bags or padded shields. The class structure is as follows: jump rope for a few minutes to warm up, followed by guided stretching and/or ab work for 10-15 minutes, then alternating combos on the heavy bags and partner work on shields, ending with either more ab work or core/strengthening exercises. It's a VERY good workout and I can see how much stronger and toned I've gotten. Brian is the instructor and he is extremely skilled and patient. If you're brand new, he is very diligent about over-seeing you as you attempt the different moves. He's very good about critiquing your form and making sure you don't haul off and hurt yourself. Also, depending on the day's class size, he's good about personalizing workouts to make sure you are getting the absolute most out of it. There's a monthly fee, but it's about equivalent to ONE session with a personal trainer, so for all the attention you get that fee is more than worth it. In class we've begun to focus more on boxing for MMA which deals with countering and blocking and essentially training as if for a competition. I never considered sparring as something I could do, but the more we do it, the more excited I am about that possibility. In a nutshell, this place is very unintimidating, the workouts are personalized and intense, and I will be coming here forever. read more
