Updating my review after 9 years(!) I've been coming to Santa Fe Market a bit more these days for lunch. They bow offer a full sandwich bar where everything is made to order with your choice e of bread, meats, and cheeses. They are pretty large and filling sandwiches too, and at $11 they are at least $2 cheaper and faster than Little Louies. The other good reason to get your lunch here is that being a grocery store, you can more options for chips, snacks, and even fresh fruit to go with tour lunch. I've been hooked recently on their Lentil Chips with Sriracha or Aged Cheddar. read more

We purchased two bottles of wine there, Domain Paso Cabernet Sauvignon and Brophy Clark Chardonnay and both had turned to vinegar and had the most horrendous odor as if wet cardboard and pain thinner had a baby. The corks were dry and crumbly indicating improper storage. These wines were in a discount wine section so the store owners know there is a problem. Instead of us paying for spoiled stinky wine, the store owners should throw away these spoiled products. We thought maybe it was a product they had a surplus of and that's why they were on sale. Santa Fe Market has opened a deli sandwich counter in the back of the house. Sandwiches starting at $10.99 are a great bargain for lunch! All the classic deli meat selections, a large variety of chips and drinks. The sandwiches aren't super fat so you'll be able to finish it and be satisfied. A less expensive sandwich option in the area if you want to picnic in nearby parks. Street parking can be tough. read more

I was in there today looking for some rhubarb, but alas, did not have it in stock (too small, but gourmet enough that I thought the risk was worth taking).... I found wonderful things like anchovy paste (perfect for making a true Ceasar dressing, a puttanesca, or a bagnat) and stracciatella gelato (among other flavors). Picked up some Clover organic milk and marveled at the various Italian imported goodies they sport (i.e. maggiora and pantofolina).... In all, this place's management is severely lacking (almost every time I'm in to pick up small items, it's not a smoothly running operation), and the market doesn't look as tidy and put-together as one ought to... however, the inventory they keep, I still maintain, is more for the gourmand who appreciates the specialty items. Produce selection ain't half bad either, and neither are their wines. PS Go across the street to buy Petaluma cheese and the Three Twins Organic ice cream, if you've a penchant for that! Actually, this is a 2.5, which is rounded up to a three. This store used to be the spot. I had a rolfing practitioner and a chiropractor in the area and I used to go by to pick up snacks before or after appointments. At one time, I loved going in, perusing the aisles and buying the snack or occasional fruit or veggie. But, this last time I went in, it smelled quite stale. It was a bit off putting and honestly, the reason why I left. I couldn't stand the smell. I smelled that once before in a store that had a meat counter that had closed. But, this counter was still there and it was really gross smelling inside. They won't be seeing me or my money any time soon. read more

Living in Point Richmond can be hard sometimes being so far away from any large grocery stores. Santa Fe Market has almost everything you could need in a last minute cooking situation. They also have great produce! It is also very nice that they aren't ridiculously overpriced for basically having the monopoly on grocery stores in town. You will pay a little more for things but not enough to make you upset. I only wish they were open later! Please stay open even a half an hour later! Let's face it: this place is the closest thing that we've got in the Point to a supermarket. I'm comfortable giving this place an average-ish rating because just about every single day my hard-earned dollars end up in their coffers. Santa Fe is a mixed bag. I must say they have an excellent selection of fresh produce that is very competitively priced. The meats that are sold here are also way above par, but not as much of a bargain as the produce. The general grocery section has it's up's and downs. One week you come in here and they have loads of a particular item (a certain brand of cereal, for example) and next week they're completely out of stock in that item, So that's frustrating. Also, you can tell the owners get their food from some sort of weird discount/wholesale place because many times stuff is damages or stale. Also, stuff in this category is grossly overpriced (which, I guess, is understandable since they've got the area market cornered). One previous reviewer had mentioned the disparity between the two owners and I must say I've taken note of this too. The one owner (who wears glasses and is usually wearing a green shirt) is a super friendly guy who always makes you feel welcome, making small talk etc. The other guy has longer hair and wears a mustache. All the exchanges I've had with this guy have been a little awkward. He recently told me, while I was asking for sandwich cheese that, "All cheddar is yellow"....Really? I was relieved to find a fantastic produce market in my area. I can get everything I need, and most of it's organic. I'm one of those people that re-uses my bread bags for produce bags, and I always appreciate it when I can get through a checkout without any weird looks. Not only is their produce section packed with the basics, there's always something new and unusual for me to try. I pick up my favorite cereal here - Peace Cereal vanilla almond - mmm. I don't go anywhere else for my meats or cheese! At least 6 different kinds of sliced cheeses, and countless different meats. I love their lunch meats in particular - the sliced peppered turkey breast is great. All that and I still can get out of there without spending more than $25. Amazing. read more

Santa Fe market has a had its highs and lows. Everyone knows that the previous owner was killed during a botch robbery. The owner then was loved by everyone and really grieved by the community. The new owners are just as sweet. It is family owned and they do a good job. Point Richmond is not known for its chains. We only have one Starbucks and that is it. We are a small community almost dormant but everyone knows everyone and we like it that way. When I go to the Santa Fe Market, yes I will pay more for my bread but that is the price to keep a mom and pop store in business. The quality of the products is very high, great fruits, great veggies, the fish is always fresh, okay frozen sections and I love the packaged cookies from Italy, Germany and France. read more

I normally don't make reviews UNLESS NEEDED. I went in here for the 2nd time tonight and I've had the same issue with the lady at the register. THE 1st time I was so uncomfortable I walked out, this time I NEEDED ITEMS FOR DINNER. I'm from Vallejo and daughter gets her hair done next door. So I come in and she stares me down, a few moments later she even walks by me to act like she's fixing the fruit but not one time asked if I needed help. When I was done I turned around to walk to the register and she was looking me dead n my eyes. So I said "hello" and she spoke like she didn't want to speak. So I Paid for my zucchini, broccoli, avocado and cabbage and left! I just don't like the rudeness. I've been trying to like this market since I moved to the neighborhood a few years ago. I do shop here when I don't want to make a farther trip but I always wish it was better. The dried/canned/packaged foods are fine and they have a surprisingly wide selection; that's the best thing they've got going. The place really falls down in the produce and meat departments. Seriously old and way past prime. Sometimes borderline moldy. I wonder how many more locals would shop here more if the produce was fresh? read more

I learned that the value 10+ years being a customer Santa Fe Market, is worth less than 5 dollars to the owner. I bought some red curry paste that when I got home, realized that it had already been opened, it also smelled awful! I went to return it and Trino the owner was wringing his hands, " I don't know if I can get credit for that" so I can not take it back. I was so incredulous that I have sworn never to go back there. The most he would be out would be his wholesale price of about 3 dollars max. That he would rather risk a 10 year customer defies any business or common sense on the planet. Suffice it to say they are dead to me. Prior to that my experience was mixed, almost all the produce is wilted and or not well taken care of. I had gone there for mint or cilantro a few times, and not seeing any, asked if they had any in the back. Most often they did. You can not sell the products from the walk in folks. This place needs some business 101 intervention. Too bad, I hate to see family run places go down, but that is the inevitable path with management like that. read more

At first glance, the produce looks good. At second glance... you realize it looks good because there's no other produce available in Pt. Richmond. With just the eensiest weensiest bit of effort, this space could be transformed into something special. The potential is clearly there. Unfortunately, management doesn't have a vision and hasn't made that eensy weensy bit of effort. Echoing other posts, it's important to check dates on dairy items. When you've been stung more than once, it's obvious nobody is at the helm. My thoughts? They should dump nearly everything, tear out most of the shelving and build the entire store around fresh produce which isn't 2 weeks past its prime. Because the nearest grocery store is more than 5 miles away, Santa Fe Market would have the market cornered and the entire town would eagerly spend dollar after dollar. However, because they've chosen to devote large amounts of dusty shelf space to 9 different kinds of canned coffee, 30 kinds of bulk wine and 1200 dented boxes of Triscuits, most folks stumble through the store like George Romero directed flesh eaters and reluctantly hand over $5 for jar of mustard before heading for the door. Look... I'm not hoping they'll transform into another Bi-Rite, Monterey Market or Berkeley Bowl... Well, wait a second, maybe I am. On the positive side, staff at the counter are friendly! read more

I really want to love this place, I really do ... but it has consistently let me down the last several times I made purchases there. They have a decent selection of grocery items... I usually end up going here if I forget something at Lucky's or Trader Joes and don't feel like trekking back out to El Cerrito or Pinole. One thing that hits you when you walk in is the pungent smell. It smells like rotting meat and mold, it's very unpleasant. The floors are dirty, produce boxes are placed on the floor... It just seems so very unsanitary. So ... Three weeks ago, I went in and bought some coffee creamer, bacon, and eggs.... being on a low carb kick at the time.. I will say, I love the eggs they carry here, they are fresh, organic, and come from Petaluma farms. I got home and put my groceries away, and several days later pulled out the bacon only to see that it had expired five months ago. I took it back the next day with my receipt for a refund. On my trip to return those items, I decided... this was probably a fluke and I would buy some groceries to make dinner that night instead of going to Lucky's. I bought two packages of Cappelino's Frozen Artichoke and Asparagus Ravioli. The outside of the package looked fine. I love Cappelino's products, they are awesome. I got home and had all my ingredients together, I opened up the box to find that the raviolis had mold on them, were all disfigured , and had horrible freezer burn. They were caked in ice. To me it seemed as though at some point they completely defrosted and re-frozen. They were not edible at all. The freezer section looks like a disgrace. I would be willing to bet that the staff do not check expiration dates on ANYTHING in the store. I've decided that I will never shop at Santa Fe Market again. Overall, pretty good. The stink left by the previous owners has gone, the refrigerators are almost all new, and the meat (from Magnani's in Berkeley) is excellent. The trouble is that the whole operation is inconsistent, thanks to a weird setup in the management. There are two co-owners, and they alternate every week. By my observation over years, one of them is charismatic, hard working, and diligent. He's the one who brings the meat in from Magnani's in Berkeley, which he also owns. The weeks that he's in Point Richmond, the shelves are full, the floors are swept, and the staff is friendly. The other co-owner seems a little dull and lazy. When he's there, shelves are not consistently restocked, the staff is cold, and overall the place seems dirty. I gave it four stars for the charismatic co-owner's weeks. read more

This is the second time I've been double charged for an item, and didn't realize until I looked at the receipt when I got home. The cashier engaged me in conversation during checkout, handed me the change, but put the receipt in the bag (usually, stores give you the receipt AND the change) The first time this happened last year, I brought in the receipt showing the double charge, but they would not refund. I let it go then, but now that this has happened a second time, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a common policy. read more

I'm giving the market a two because I just don't think a store should sell anything that's old. A lot of the produce isn't fresh. A suggestion would be to bag up the shriveled produce and mark it down like Monterey Market in Berkeley. On the plus side, they carry really good French breads like Acme and Semifreddies and that is why I stop in while visiting my mom in Pt Richmond. I usually will look at the produce but I'm turned off very quickly when I see that it's not the freshest so I go home with just the bread. I can't comment on the meat, fish or chicken which I have never tried. I just can't trust a store that try's to sell old produce at what seems to be regular prices. It makes you wonder what else is old. Their refridgeration may not be the best but it's no excuse. Assuming most people are working these days, why would you shop here when there are many good choices on the way home from work If shoppers could depend on some nice fresh produce, maybe the store would do better. read more

Sante Fe Market offers the Point a wonderful selection of fresh pastries and breads, great produce and fish (can't say about their meats but they look good). Their wines and gourmet items are above average. The owners are conscientious and friendly. I shop here as often as possible! read more

Every time I come here, I feel like I'm in a Seinfeld episode. I work nearby, so I buy random dry goods here every so often like saltine crackers or cookies or a six pack of soda, you know, standard small market stuff. They have a deli meat counter at the back where you can buy a piece of bread and make a custom deli sandwich, which is probably the best thing about the store. Prices aren't great, but with the closest supermarket like 3 miles away, what are you going to do. Ok, standard review stuff out of the way, here are some weird things about the market. 1) The whole place smells like cat pee. 2) Stuff has a lot of dust on it. Beware with soda cans. 3) I have BIZARRE interactions with the cashier here every single time I come. Just when I think we're approaching a normal "regular customer" relationship, she busts out with some weird story or statement that blasts us back to square one. Now, I will admit that I'm half of the equation here -- my obsession with having her accept my personal checks (I don't even carry any) in spite of a sign that says "No Personal Checks" is something that probably weirds her out too. Last time, we had a strange, rambling conversation about the health benefits of apple cider vinegar which I tried to keep up until it just got too weird and I had to leave. I dunno, I feel like I'd go to a different market if one existed, but the Richmond market kitty-corner to Santa Fe is no less strange and their prices are worse (but it doesn't smell like cat pee). read more
