This is my spot, people you get to know and a real beat lounge. The music selections and truffle popcorn are the perfect accompaniment to their excellent craft beers. They are my fave brewery in all of the many I have traveled to.

Busy street , but laid music and nice outdoor seating.

This place is a nice local berkeley spot with a decent variety of beer. It's small inside but they have overflow seating outside. You can bring in outside food. They only have popcorn (read 'only' as buttery salty goodness). You can also bring dogs. It was almost like a dog park the day I came. 4 cute pooches all getting along The bar tender was laid back and kept the glasses full without being intrusive. The vibe was cool jazzy Hip hop. The bathroom was clean. They have chalk and you have the option to draw on the walls. You will probably be able to find a parking space within two blocks.

Great little place around the block from our Airbnb. Pretty empty on a Friday night but the barkeep said it's happening during the week with lots of locals and regulars. My beers were amazing. My hubby's ciders were the same.

This is the coolest joint in South Berkeley. Hidden gem with smooth vibes. Plays great low fi music and has a bevy of snacks. The popcorn is awesome! The ppl are cool and the vibes are immaculate.

Can't say I love the beer, do love the free WiFi and chilling with straight ahead jazz in the afternoon on the veranda. Not a huge place obviously a locals watering hole. Enough outdoor area to not feel like delta is gonna get ya.

This place seems like a hidden spot in Berkeley area. Its a small taproom with very cute sitting areas. They have nice variety of beers and the bartender is very kind to explain/ recommend beers to the customers. They don't have much snacks but Ive seen ppl bringing their own food to pair up with the drinks. I really enjoy their beer with the peanut that they serve as snack. It was my second time to visit this place. I would totally go back for a beer.

Great small outdoor space next door to yummy Creole food. Had seltzer, cider and beers. All very good. No tasting menu, but can order smaller pours.

As dinner with friends wound down, we all decided to continue the festivities; hence, we ended up at Hoi Polloi. From the tap selection, I tried the Belgian Trippel (16oz @ $8), smoked wheat beer (16oz @ $6), and Bavarian-style marzen (16oz @ $6). The trippel, while fragrant, did not overdo the sweetness and sharp earthiness I find in other trippels. The smokiness of the wheat beer seemed apparent on the nose and rear of the palate, but seemed subdued in the body of the palate. The marzen tasted a touch richer than medium. Given that everything seemed quite decent and reasonably priced, I would certainly return.

They don't do tasters, instead 4oz pours

The first time I went to Cellarmaker I was post-ride -- the particular kind of hungry and…read moredehydrated that makes any beer taste like the best beer you've ever had, which is why I don't fully trust that first impression. But the West Coast IPA was good, genuinely good, and the pizzas coming out of the kitchen to the tables around me looked like pizzas made by people who cared about pizza, and the outdoor area was the kind of setup that welcomes bikes and dogs without making a production of it. I made a mental note: come back sometime for food. "Sometime" turned out to be yesterday, which is how it always works, the places you mean to return to in a week take three months, and the ones you expect to take three months surprise you on a random afternoon when you're starving and nearby and out of excuses. We'd taken the dogs on a long hike through Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, which if you haven't done it is one of those East Bay hikes that makes you briefly forget you live in an urban area -- redwoods and eucalyptus and creek crossings and the kind of quiet that resets whatever the week did to you. By the end of it we were the specific kind of famished where menu deliberation is impossible and you just point at things and hope. We sat outside and pointed at things and everything we pointed at was excellent. The baked sweet potato--a Japanese sweet potato under miso butter, chili crème fraîche, bacon bits, crispy onions, scallions, and pea tendrils--is the kind of dish that sounds like it was assembled by a committee of trendy adjectives but actually works as a coherent thing you want to eat. The miso butter does the heavy lifting, that sweet-savory bridge that makes Japanese sweet potatoes sing, and the chili crème fraîche keeps it from tipping into cloying territory. Fifteen dollars for a side dish at a brewery is a number that would normally make me flinch, but the portion was generous and the execution was real. The summer squash tostadas--roasted zucchini, cherry tomatoes, avocado, pickled red onion, salsa macha, queso fresco, cilantro--were bright and crunchy and exactly the kind of thing you want after four hours in the woods. The salsa macha brought a nutty, smoky heat that elevated what could have been a forgettable veggie tostada into something I'd actually order again on purpose. And then there were the pickled vegetables. Cauliflower, fennel, zucchini, carrots. Seven dollars. Who pickles zucchini? Cellarmaker pickles zucchini, and it's delicious, and I'm annoyed that I now have to rethink my entire understanding of what belongs in a pickle jar. I had the Diamonds & Gasoline, a West Coast IPA with Nelson Sauvin and Cascade Cryo hops. The menu copy promises white wine and gooseberry and diesel-y grapefruit funk. What I'd tell you is that it's dank. Good dank. The kind of resinous, piney, vaguely illicit West Coast IPA that California does better than anywhere and that Northern California in particular has turned into a regional art form. I drank it and thought about the fact that I've started using the word "dank" to describe beer unironically and that I voluntarily hiked through redwoods on a Sunday afternoon and that I'm sitting outside a brewery in Berkeley with two dogs at my feet eating a Japanese sweet potato with miso butter on it. I am becoming a Northern Californian. This is happening. I lament nothing. The pizza will have to wait for the third visit. Wednesday, maybe -- they do a $12 slice-and-beer special that sounds like exactly the kind of deal that accelerates the conversion.

If you don't care to read the story about my drama, just know that everyone who works there, from the bartenders to the security guards to possibly the manager and owner (not sure, I didn't ask who they were, sorry!) were so sweet and kind and helpful to me when they really didn't have to be, and I am forever grateful!!! I won't include the full story that I subjected them all to when I came in, but, essentially, some horrid drama with my friends happened one night out at Tap that was partially witnessed by a security guard. I am insane and decided to do some investigating and try to talk to this security guard to hear the full truth, so I went in the next day early and talked to the sweetest bartender (Allison, I think) who listened to my whole story and texted the security guard for me to get more details! Such a girl's girl. I then came in again the next day (insane, I told you) and literally talked to a circle of people (including Andre? the security guard - sorry if that's not how you spell it) about the whole story again. They were all so kind and helpful and apologetic and both helped with my insane investigation and also made me feel better about the whole situation! And then the next week, I came in with (other) friends, and a lovely man who I believe is the manager recognized me and gave me a drink on the house! So nice I nearly cried. Love you all very much. I don't want to subject them to more harassment by insane college girls trying to conduct investigations into their situationship's behavior, but just know if you ever truly need to lol, go in before 9pm and you will meet the loveliest people very invested in your drama.

The bartender said he was the one working that night, but suddenly he "doesn't handle transactions". He said a manager would call me back and nobody ever did. So now I'm returning in person because that charge was NOT authorized. I don't care how little the amount is. You do NOT add money to someone's card without their permission. That is wrong and shady. If you come here, WATCH YOUR BANK STATEMENTS and KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS because clearly they feel comfortable adding extra charges after you leave.

You're given a card that allows you to pour what you want. For food, I did a shrimp and a lamb, yes, I said lamb, taco. Both were great. The lamb was surprisingly great as a taco meat. They have a variety of different beer flavors available through dispensers where you simply tap your card and pour as much or as little as you'd like while keeping track of the total $$. Our group shared one card and asked for four cups so everyone could sample different beers, which made it a really fun tasting experience. It's a great way to try multiple options without committing to a full pint of something you're unsure about. For food, we ordered the pizza, chicken tikka masala, naan, and tamarind chili black ribs. The ribs in particular had a nice balance of sweet and tangy flavors. However, the portions felt small for the price point, which was the biggest drawback of the meal. While the food was good, it didn't quite match the value of the drinks and atmosphere. Tap in lounge is a solid place to grab drinks and hang with friends. Just be prepared for food portions that are a bit smaller than expected for what you're paying.
