I think I'm on a mission to…read more. SAVE RATON!! So, I've been going to and from CA to CO for the past two+ years and the Amtrak has definitely been a secret pleasure of mine. The rates are pretty darn reasonable and the experience is quite nice. One stop I thought was simply magical was Raton. It let me know that we're almost to CO or well on my way back west. Whether I'm jumping off to hitch a ride on the Grey Hound connector to hit the major cities, or hanging tight on the train a little longer to visit my cousin who lives near the La Junta station... Raton is a quiet town with some of the sweetest folk one can encounter. Enter "The Pack Rat" One of a few places open this past Labor Day was this great place. Browse for staple souvenirs and even amazing locally made goodies like rosaries, jewelry, crafty items, and even yummy eats. Our 2 hour delay got us patronizing and socializing at the Pack Rat. The owners were cordial and very helpful. They were very inviting and informative. Not too pushy and gave us just enough space to freely move about the establishment without feeling watched or pressured. They had a fairly large selection of dream catchers. Small to big! We snatched a howling wolf that was pretty huge for $25. A definite deal considering I got one in AZ or UT from a "native" that was the size of a half dollar for 15 bucks. They adorn the walls, so please check them out if your into them. I walked out with some snacks for the road, a habanero salsa, that catcher, and a few other trinkets. The Pack Rat is a tourist must because what's better than good people, local items, reasonable prices, and tons of souvenirs to sift through?? I was fully satisfied with the purchase I made and would love to come back again. AMTRAK, would you please consider re-opening the Raton station? Spread the word!!! Entering the gallery, most days you're immediately greeted by the wonderful Gilbert. He's been around a long time, has stories to tell, and is an incredible delight to speak to. If nothing else, you'll leave the gallery smiling if only have spoken to Gilbert. However! There's the art work, of course. Like I mentioned, with different shows throughout the year, you'll always see something different. "Women of New Mexico" or an event featuring the artwork from children in Raton. Always something different. The artwork can be that of southwestern paintings, perhaps photography, or even sculptures. It's always changing! Prices are very modest and often affordable. When you go looking around for something, you never have to worry about finding it because there are people seemingly at every aisle to help. What's more, they ALL seem to be super-knowledgeable! Are they all trained on everything?! Maybe I've just been lucky, but it sure seems that way. I have to especially call out Chris in the paint department. He's been there for years, but even after not coming by for longgg stretch (we were out of town for much of the COVID-19 Pandemic) when my wife and I returned, he knew us exactly, remembered all our paint choices and helped us in every way possible. The selection in the store is just big enough to find what you need, but their online service provides what seems like a limitless selection. Prices are comparable to other stores. The fact Records has stood the test of time is evidence of how wonderful they are, and certainly a valued merchant in the little town of Raton, New Mexico.

It has been my personal experience that the store owners and managers will ignore, harass, refuse service, or call the police on individuals who are white, who are community activists/are known to be working to engender positive change in the community, or who complain either about the store's poor operations, management and quality control or about the store's discriminatory practices to Ace Hardware's national customer relations. I further believe that I am treated differently because, by my observation, I am "not their friend", I don't "look like them", or I am "new" or "not from around here". National Ace has done nothing to address or correct these problems or practices, which can only serve to damage Ace's heretofore good reputation as "helpful hardware folks".. All people of good conscience should demand that Ace treat all customers equally, with respect and dignity befitting its espoused, but poorly implemented, principles.
