I was so busy reading the informational cards that I forgot to take pictures. We spent much longer in this museum than anticipated because it was so much bigger and interesting than we expected. The staff is available for whatever you need but largely leaves you alone to wander. Did you know Raton, NM was one of the few places in the U.S. onauthorized to print U.S. currency? Did you know about the town of Swastika, NM or this history of the swastika symbol? What famous singer was from Raton? How important was mining? It's worth your time to stop in Raton, as you pass through northern New Mexico, and spend some time in this museum!!!

We stopped in, and I had been looking for a new video camera and they had a one that was really nice at a great price. We checked the same model online, and we got a great deal from Flat Mountain Trading Co. If you live in the area or are just passing through, it behooves you to stop and take a look. They corner unsuspecting customers, block the isles and never seem to be doing anything constructive. It's a great store that provides a wonderful service to both locals and visitors and it's too bad the actions of some of the volunteers detract from what would otherwise be a very positive experience. To be fair, there is a delightful young lady who's super friendly, helpful, and always busy, and the manager (Josephine?) is a wealth of information, extremely dedicated and helpful. I've gotten to the point that if neither of them are working I won't go in the store.

Most of this art museum is dedicated to his works and accoutrements. If you are fan of Cowboy/Western Art then is a must stop. I Particularly was interested in the Spanish folk art, and Native American pottery. This museum hosts a lot of local artists, with Hans Droog being of particular note, his "Swirly Horse 1" is mesmerizing. The building the art pieces are housed in is 115 years old, this building itself is a work of art, the hardwood alone floors made me swoon. You can easily spend an hour here moving on the 1st floor then 2ed floor and then back down to the gift area. Allyson, was very kind to take time out of her busy day and explain Mitchell's relationship to Harold Von Schmidt who's use of color is unique, his style and expressiveness draws you in, you feel as if you are in the scene he has created. Allyson also answered a million questions, the chat with her was as interesting as the art work. Free admission is the cherry on top.

The Cokedale Mining Museum is worth the visit if you are staying around Trinidad. This Museum…read moreshows the life of coal miners in a company town. Several of the original houses are still lived in and cared for by current residences. You will need to call in advance to make sure a guide will be there, but it will be well worth your time. And if Mining is not your thing, then maybe listening to the ghost of the store owner walking behind you will peak your interest.
