For the licence renewal, we took the appointment online, paid for the Real ID online too, took the compulsory test online, aswell. On reaching we had a token number allotted and the turn came within a few minutes. The process at the window itself took just a few minutes, photo taking and biometric another 3-4 minutes, we were out (two people's renewal process done) in 40 minutes. No standing in queues, no long waits (since mostly every thing was completed online). The staff is attentive and helpful. Enough onsite parking available. read more

i am eighty-two years old and moved from forestville, california (95436) to santa rosa last summer. i filed a change of address but dmv now says that they sent me a correspondence to my old address but that dmv's policy is to not allow a forwarding of mail from one home to another. in short, in the midst of poor health problems requiring two surgeries, i never even received a notice of renewal of my registration, and i just now noticed that my licence plate shows a january, 2006 expiration now i am being notified, in response to a number of pleas, that i cannot "fix" this because all registration must be done on-line and there is no option for me to fix this. i am not driving my car...period. that is illegal. but i needed to share this. thank you, richard e. kaye read more

Let's start off with a minor downside: I made an appoitment online, so I expected that I would be able to waltz in, present my requisite documents, and be on my way with a new "Real ID" CDL in about 10-15 minutes from start to finish. It turns out that an appointment only gets you into the "appointment" line, and there's only one dude who checks you in. Great -- except he alternates between the "appointment" line and the "walk-in" line. I wouldda hoped that the DMV would have had TWO check-in spots -- one for "appointments" and one for "walk-ins". OK, by my count they saved maybe 5% in labor expense by having only ONE check-in window. So my 10-15 minute out the door turned into a (still not horrible) 30-40 minute visit. Having said that, the rest of the process went pretty smoothly, other than not knowing when my number would come up, as they don't show the queue on their "now serving" overhead screens. Eventually I yelled "bingo" and went to the next window, where I was greated by a friendly, yet efficient DMV employee who re-reviewed my required documentation for the Real ID license, collected the required fee, and then said to proceed to the DMV photo booth (not actually a booth, but a "please stand here, with your toes on the line and face the camera" plea from the next friendly employee). You should definitely be prepared for your "best face" (not like DJT's official portrait), because you only get one shot -- you don't get any retakes. Make sure to brush your teeth before your visit so that coffee (or red wine) stains don't capture the moment inappropriately. You're gonna have to live with the result for 5 years... read more

An excursion into idiocracy. I'm not sure if they are more stupid, evil, or just enjoy making people miserable. I had a mail-in DL renewal - but had to go in because of a small secondary issue. Lost two hours in the office due to petty bureaucracy. Went in under scheduled appointment and had to recreate renewal docs online (they can't used the forms they send you in the mail) and then got sent through no less that five lines to accomplish what was supposed to be a mail in renewal. Add to that a heap of attitude from the employees made it even worse. I mostly pay AAA so i don't have to go to the DMV - but in this case i had to. Worst of the worst... read more

I made an appointment for a Real ID. It was a busy day but the line moved pretty quickly even though there were a few difficult customers. I thought the check in people (there were two, one for appointments, one for walk-ins) were very courteous and helpful to the customers as well as to each other with the difficult customers. The physcial space has been remodelled so it felt nicer to be there. Most notable, though, was that the employees seemed upbeat, pleasant and happy to help as well as friendly with each other. Going to the DMV can feel so precarious and stressful and it seems like there's been a serious effort to make it an easier experience. read more

A 5 star review for the DMV??!! Absolutely! And that's with out, making an appointment! I needed to renew a lapsed license, which I had completely forgotten and showed up one Friday morning about 40 minutes early. There are only a dozen people in front of me, and by the time the doors opened there was probably 25 people behind me to say they were efficient is an understatement, and everything was incredibly smooth. I went through the entire process less than 22 minutes. Of course if you're one of those people who plan way ahead, an appointment would have been ideal, but for the rest of us just show up in our early and make sure to do any paperwork online beforehand. Don't be surprised if they treat you noticeably different or biased based on your appearance & not because of your actual lack of courtesy or respect but more so because of their narrow or extremely shallow superficial mindset. I came across 2 very different demographics in the short span of that overall sour experience. A thinly built Caucasian security guy (no disrespect as I'm thinly built too) who seemed very helpful 2 the women but attitude & demeanor changed instantly upon having 2 approach me 2 question me as though I did anything but enter the end of 1 of the lines. He seemed upset because the disabled line I entered was way shorter than the main line. "WHAT are YOU doing..!?" "WHERE are YOU going..!? I took a deep breath, as a way 2 briefly deescalate his aggressive approach. His body language looked like he awaited a confrontation. So I responded, "Shouldn't you be asking me what I'm here for..? What's wrong w/ you..!" He brought it down 3 notches & asked if I had an appointment & it didn't matter if I'm disabled or not if I didn't have an appointment I had to go get in the general line. Which I had no problem doing since there was a sign (off to the side amongst many others I doubt ppl take the time to read the dozen or so) he gladly pointed to. However I'm far from being unreasonable & he didn't even give me the benefit of simply coming to me as a professional & not some angry, aggressive individual hell bent on immediately inflicting his rules as though it's a virtual thumb of his that I'm under. He came in on a 10 when I blindly walked into the lane I usually walk to in the cities I usually frequent when going to the DMV. So I go to the other lane, no problem, I brought a book I'm really ready 2 wait it out if I must. Mentally ready if need be no problem. I crack open my book & I'm reading & listening to him in the background, how nice he's being, then 15 minutes goes bi & I'm close to the front. When another guy (I'm guessing from India's proximity from his accent) who was expediting people's needs & pointing them in the right direction, semi patiently, got to me & again I was met w/ authority. "Do you have your ID..?" Yes I do, here you go "What do you want..!" I'm here for another ID w/ my current information on it "What's wrong w/ this one!" That one doesn't contain my current address on it & some people/ things are weird about that. He didn't appreciate in the way I answered I could tell but at that point I was frustrated myself. I wake up everyday happy & ready to do my part in this struggle we call life. But people make my progress difficult when I feel I'm battling against hard headed, ancient enemies my ancestors had to face (thought no disrespect because of the obvious differences however still) It's a continual straws being placed on the backs of ppl like me. Every time someone honks or shout out slurs as they pass in traffic, or them allowing their dog to bark, approach & even bite you w/ out even calling the dog back to their side (or until you do something to protect yourself then they're calling the dog & cussing me out, every time a person on the other end of the phone gets an unwarranted attitude because you ask too many questions, now I'm making their job a burden on themselves, or the kids who are no older than 13, 14, 15 yell slurs at you a whole football field away & countless other racially motivated nuances of hate, prejudice, discrimination & even violence is why we get stereotyped as being angry ppl. It would almost be like a joke to us if it weren't rooted in so much our anguish & despair. So are we angry or are we pushed & obey to a human response & animalistic reaction to being backed into a corner or constantly hit w/ unwarranted attacks from just about anyone (even your own who's lost & don't know where to begin or which way is up). It's extremely frustrating when all you want is to see ppl happy & enjoying themselves...but NOT at your expense. I left out of there unable to talk w/ someone, ANYONE who would calmly or politely or peacefully listen to my dilemmas. read more

In Most DMV offices you have to wait about an hour or so, for anything, so it's all about going early in the day to do your business, I won't argue there. It felt comfortable to be in a place like this, there was no music on max volume, unlike another DMV I went to. Employees aren't forced to smile which is understandable. The employees working here are so nice and Get To The Point. I love that. I didn't hear any problems. I was here to do my online drivers test and I was confused where to go after I passed. A worker helped me nicely and congratulated me with a smile. Very welcoming and hope to come here in the future again. read more

The process after applying online was slow, however the wait time to have your number called was a hour! All I wanted was a new Real ID!

I have no idea why employees here feel so comfortable being rude and condescending to people that come in. I came in tonight to get signed off for a fix it ticket. First woman was nice, but confused and talked to someone else, then came back and told me I had to move my car around to the other side of the building so someone can check it. I walked back to my car and pulled around. There are two lanes- the driver test lane, which was empty, and the verification lane (the one i needed), with a parked car with no one in it blocking the way out. I chose the drivers test lane because i (apparently incorrectly) assumed that it doesn't matter *that* much when i just needed someone to look at my registration sticker and sign my ticker. I go inside to let them know I pulled my car around and immediately get scolded by a man that I wasn't supposed to leave my car. No one told me this, no signs mentioned this, but he still talked to me like a misbehaving toddler for leaving my car. Again, the other lane had a driverless car parked there so I had no reason to believe I was doing something wrong. I go back and a second woman comes out asking why I'm parked in the divers test lane because there are no drivers tests scheduled. I explain that the other lane is blocked but she still condescendingly tells me i have to move my car. Finally the only person with common sense so far comes out and I explain the situation to him, where he tells me that no one should have told me to move my car around in the first place, and that i could have handled the whole thing inside- which is what i was trying to do. He takes care of the situation quickly and i wish i knew his name so he can be an example of how to talk to people and vouch that if anyone deserves a raise, its him. He directs me that I'd need to back up to leave- because again the second woman i talked to told me to park in a blocked lane, behind a car with no driver but I guess its okay for them to leave their car alone :) I'm honestly just shocked at how 3/5 people I talked to were extremely rude, and talking down to me like i was stupid, for doing things THEIR OWN COWORKERS told me I was supposed to do. Not sure why they're so comfortable having such an unprofessional attitude but since I was relying on them to help me I didn't feel comfortable calling them out on their behavior, so here we are. If a manager does read this I hope you take the time to train your employees 1) not to be so patronizing 2) know their jobs well enough to send people to the right place to being with so customers don't have to waste time being scolded for doing what they were directed to do. This attitude wouldn't fly at any other customer service job so I don't get why they feel so safe acting like this at the DMV. read more

Went on a Saturday morning. Yep, they're open 2 Saturdays a month now. Newer flat panel monitors are now easier to read. The old smelly stained carpets are still there. Normally, I make an appointment but I just paid off one of my cars and the soonest appointment was 4 weeks out. I wanted the title to reflect "no lienholder" so I could reduce my insurance to liability only so hence the office visit without an appointment. I got there at 7:10 am Saturday and there was already a long line. 20 minutes later, the line had quadrupled behind me. Totally crazy! Finally, 2 hours later at 9:10 am, I'm done. I couldn't do the transaction by mail or at AAA because is was a complicated title re-issue. DMV really should do something about the long lines as I don't believe they have kept up with the growth (including their 3 foot high weeds...haha). It was only after I turned them in to Santa Rosa's weed abatement program at SFFD before they mowed down the weeds. I would rather see a standing building than one burned down with their fire hazard. Totally had no idea this was something I could review! My most recent experience was the best one yet. Yes. I said it, I had a good experience at the DMV. They totally revamped their whole system. No more waiting for hours! You are required to complete all forms online before you get to a window. If you don't do this at home or from you phone, you must use a shared computer. They have assistants for people who are not great at using the computer but everyone must be done online. Once your forms are complete you get a number. I didn't have to wait for a computer, I didn't have to wait for a number, and my number was called immediately. I was in the DMV for a total of 30 minutes filling out forms, waiting, being helped, and having my photo retaken. 3 stars because it's the same old chairs, carpet, furniture, and smell. The building could use a facelift. read more

What a joke!! Do not go to this location. Facts: - 3 visits to DMV for a simple out of state registration. Seems pretty simple and basic, right?! I had all my documents with me including a smog. Visit #1 - Waited 1 hour to get my plates/vehicle verified. No one showed up so the receptionist filled out the paperwork. Waited 1 hour at the clerks window for her to process my paperwork. She was in training with no supervisor standing by. She got up from her desk to ask questions 7-8 times. She then asked me to pay $1,098.00 for fees when it should have been around $300.00. I questioned the amount and a supervisor was finally called over. I finally paid $320.00, received new plates, registration and tags. Visit #2 - Surprise!! One week later, I received a notice in the mail stating that my smog was missing which meant the clerk lost it. So I had to go back to DMV with paperwork to prove it was because of her error. Visit #3 - Surprise!! Two weeks later, I received a Demand for Payment letter from State of California stating that I still owe them the $1,098.00 (which was the clerks error in the beginning). After being overseas for some many years and the absence of any records of my last CALIF driver's license, came to my appointment at the DMV office, was greeted with courteous and professional service, after which I was directed to await my number to be called before reporting to a processor. Less than 15 minutes later, met with a processing officer that courteously, quickly and efficiently processed my application after passing the drivers' on-line exam on the first try. Was initially informed that I would need to make an additional appointment for the on-hands driver's test. Upon getting photographed, one of the senior supervisors waived the driver's test and issued a temporary license on the spot. By the way, the DMV office was PACKED with lines to the entrance door at the time. Best encounter with a CALIF State office ever. read more

We got in line at 7:15 AM on a weekday morning to renew our driver licenses and get upgraded to RealID. We'd done our applications online and came prepared with all the paperwork we needed. We were about 20 deep in line when we arrived. Around 7:45, staff came around to the line and took inventory of peoples' forms and assigned people window numbers. The doors opened promptly at 8:00 and I went right to my window. I chose to renew my license rather than just upgrade it, which required that I take the 18-question renewal test. From 8AM when we were let in to the time we (both my wife and I) were completely done was 30 minutes. I couldn't believe it. From the time we arrived to when we left was 1 hour and 15 minutes, probably my fastest DMV visit ever. read more

Removing my initial review as I was fuming at the time. I went to the DMV and was met by the santa rosa and Petaluma managers right away. They heard me out and was more than willing to fix what I needed, but explained the benefit of real ID. I didn't get the ins and outs of it properly until it was throughly explained. Now I understand why my entire name is on it. They're going to address the issue I had prior to feeling discriminated against and lack of discretion with my name when I went in for my gender marker change with a rep. I guess for a DMV I was in and out of there quickly- ish. I came in to get a replacement ID as they could not get me set up for the CA Real ID that is required in 10/2020. I stood in one line (cause I didnt have an appt). Then I had to go to another computer to fill out another form get a code and then get an appt made. The wait was about 1.5 hours before I was seen (not bad for the DMV). The lady that helped me was very quiet but focused on her job. I did have to take a new picture, the lady that helped me there was great and made sure to take a picture in which my eyes were actually open. I think they should post somewhere what is needed or have more application kiosks towards the front of the location- I know the building is really old as it has been there as long as I have been alive. read more

Dear lord this place is a mess. Sure you extended hours and now are open Saturday but what's the point when you have no staff... Its 930am an you got 3 maybe 4 windows open out of 15/18 windows...... You got employees just walking around with a dead look of not sure what to do... to help people or walk around. It's not even close to lunch time and it's already gunna be a 3-6hr wait. I am so annoyed by their system because it doesn't work and keeps people trapped. We can get rid of the DMV all together because they don't do a good job of helping the privileged drivers, only to burden them with restrictions, paperwork, and fees. Wait in one line to wait in another line to be bottle necked in one more, and one last one if you need a photo taken. No one is taking photos btw. Same old junk box tv's that are blurred standard definition. Old stained carpet that probably hasn't been replaced since 1983. The chairs are hard plastic prison chairs that are all linked and chained together. But hey, these guys got me in the door 15 mins before closing time so I can't complain. I'm finally picking up my custom plates I've waited 4 months for. It's a very exciting day ! I knmow these guys probably don't enjoy their job. It would be nice if they politely cracked a smile. Maybe the coffee pot is broken? Or maybe I'm too much of a perky peach? You will never know who's window your going to be walking up into. Hopefully whomever it is, you're hitting them on a good day . The parking lot here can be a nightmare. LITERALLY!!!!!! I've circled this place before for 15 mins before I gave up and just drove to Petaluma. By the way...... Petaluma is by far the best location in our area. I was born in the UK and had a California License before ,I moved out of state and back again and now I need a U S passport or a Naturalization Certificate to switch it back ! I've lived in the USA 35 years Now I have to wait up to a year to get a copy of my naturalization certificate that was destroyed , seems unfair . I did the CDL renewal online on Friday. I had an appt today. I thought maybe I'd bring them cookies...Lets just say i went in with a good attitude. I know its a tough job. The woman i get cannot find the application i did online. So glad i printed it. She didnt care. Go use the computer and file the application. Come back to my window after. No waiting. The computer freezes up and i have to leave all my private info to find someone to unfreeze the computer. I go back to the original window. She now has a line of the folks she had sent away and come back to her no waiting window...it seems she said that to a lot of people. She didbinvite me to return for the Real ID. I had proof of residence and SS card. She wanted Birth Cert and passport. I thought i really prepared on Friday. Passport? Not everyone has a passport. WtF. I cannot hear her soft spoken accented voice and have to ask repeatedly for her to repeat things, speak up, move closer...all with the overhead PA announcing adding to the ambient noise. No disrespect, i cannot hear you. Finally she says go across the room to window 20 for the photo. I get in the next Disney maze. At that line, the only line for window 20, there are 3 people hustling. Then 2, then 1. These folks seem to be helping the elderly on the computers, listening to the frustrations of poor people having fines added to a renewal that just sounds like milking a dry cow. Oh the circles of hell, so specifically tailored for each individual. Then Im told I'm not where i should be for a photo, gesturing both back to the line and toward folks all around me trying to maintain our 6 ft, i finally stop and say, "just tell me where you want me to stand." There is no line for the photo. Oh. Having one of the folks at a window escort someone to the front of a line for "take this person before you take another" then have the new window look at the paperwork and tell them to get to the end of the line does not improve morale. Not for anyone. Nearly in tears after an appt at DMV. Just a CDL, wanted the CAReal ID also. But could not get it done. I went in with a good attitude. Its still as bad as a root canal. All 3 time it's was as if they where trying to crush my spirit and soul. 1 time in needed paperwork for Ca license and registration. I want to be clear, this is obviously an issue above and beyond the employees at this particular DMV. I needed to renew my license and update my last name. I arrived at 10:30AM- clearly not an early riser here- however, I'll explain later why that doesn't matter. This is clearly no appointment, however not sure how helpful that was for those individuals (except for Driver's tests, which is understandable.) First, you get in the door. That took a good 30 minutes. Your heart sinks when you turn the corner, and you have to snake around again, much like at Disneyland when you get that false hope of progress in a long line. That was another solid 45 minutes of waiting. I was asked if it had to do with a license; yes! I get escorted to a kiosk to fill out paperwork. The new kiosks you walk through are so vague- I had difficulty figuring out exactly what to tell the computer screen for my name change and address change as well. Whatever, clearly our tax dollars aren't paying for UX design here. This was the part that broke my soul. I get to the "sitting area," which seems like solid progress. I kid you not, I sit there for two more hours with my patience waning. I came in here super prepared to wait, and now I'm realizing my phone is at 14% and there's probably four employees at about 16 windows. So- an employee comes over and addresses the group waiting, sharing out customer feedback cards. She nicely (but you can tell she's also frustrated) explains with the new Real ID cards, it adds a lot of time to the process, and also they have super high turnover because employees get harassed. Anyway a chatty lady near me; I hear her mention she's been there since 8AM. It's now 2PM mind you. I've been at the DMV for four hours. I did some simple math- if this lady is still at my same point and she was there 2.5 hours before me, this is hopeless, and peaced out. I have a cold anyway so it was doubly purgatory-ish being there. Even the tiny bathroom with one stall is depressing. Why not just have a one person bathroom? Somehow that gray, partitioned toilet area depressed me the most. Making an appointment online? Plan on it being at least a month out these days. Also don't be dicks to the employees, they are just doing their jobs. And send in the customer survey cards, they go to Sacramento. They clearly need to hire more people or simplify the process, OR at the very least, manage our expectations about how long it truly takes to get some basic paperwork done at the DMV right now. read more

My number JM4444 came up at 435 PM and I did the happy dance all the way to window number five, YAY! I was so excited that I almost knocked over the Chinese waving cat decor at my window. Bad first impression but I have to tell all of Sonoma County that I had the greatest time at the DMV and I did not catch window number 5's name but he sure sent me home with a smile on my face. :) If you are a bit of a bobble head when you get excited (sometimes it's charming and other times it costs you 3 trips to the DMV) just remember to check that the pink slip, registration and person selling the car are all the same person!!! Yeahhh major fail on my part BUT due diligence paid off as did honesty and humility. Oh and patience because I was there in line for almost 3 hours. It was ok because I met two lovely ladies and one incredible DMV employee who made my day. That's right, my opinion of The DMV SR has changed and thank you thank you thank you nice gentleman at window number 5! Oh yeah and thank you nice gentleman at the beginning info booth. I packed my good attitude. This helped. The lady that worked with me and her desk partner we so helpful. I also realized that this new real id license procedure is complicated and time consuming. Bring original ss card. Passport and utility bill with your name on it. And they will get it done. Maybe 5 hours later but done. read more
