Santa Rosa Junior College was the site of this weekend's USA/Pacific Swim event and they did a great job of hosting and organizing this season's event. Exclusively outdoors, we hunkered down for 6+ hours a day of frigid weather while watching our kids compete at myriad races, some more difficult for my first-time competitor kid. He fought for every yard! The pool is lovely, built from a 2014 bond making it the first Olympic size pool from Santa Rosa to Portland. This two year, accredited college is growing its STEM, liberal arts, children's development, life sciences and vocational programs and is located in bucolic Sonoma County. read more

I have a young cousin who is a Service-connected disabled Veteran with a valid DMV issued disabled Veteran license plate who asked me to go with them since I'm also disabled to check out Junior and Community colleges in Northern California. I also carry my valid DMV issued disabled placard. Here's my review from when we visited Santa Rosa Junior College. March is National Disability Awareness Month. Santa Rosa Junior College is NOT disabled-friendly or disabled Veteran-friendly nor is it Purple Heart recipient Veteran-friendly nor is it Veteran friendly nor is it Active Duty GI friendly nor is it ADA Service Dog friendly. There are limited disabled parking spaces. There are no Active Duty GI parking places. There are no Veteran parking spaces. There are no disabled Veteran parking places. There are no Purple Heart medal parking places here. The Purple Heart is a military medal first created by General George Washington in 1782. It's awarded for wounds, or death, as result of an act of any opposing armed force, as a result of an international terrorist attack or as a result of military operations while Serving as part of a peacekeeping force. California Assembly Bill 190 became effective 1 January 2009. According to California DMV, once you have a valid California Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart, Disabled Placard "DP" placard or DP License Plates, you may park for no charge: "In parking spaces with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol). Next to a blue curb authorized for persons with disabilities parking. Next to a green curb (green curbs indicate limited time parking) for as long as you wish. After parking on campus, we hiked our way to the campus buildings since there's no shuttle for disabled. I was hassled several times about my Service Dog and the Veterans' accouterments I adorn her with lavishly. Never is so much owed by so many to so few. There is egregious and widespread misconduct to GIs and Veterans at Santa Rosa Junior College. It has forgotten, if it ever even knew, the sacrifices that our Active Duty GIs make and our Veterans made when they each took an Oath up to and including their life to defend our Freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, and to defend our country and protect those who can't Serve as well as those who won't Serve in the US Armed Forces to protect us. We sadly discovered the churlish Santa Rosa Junior College Board of Trustees https://trustees.santarosa.edu/board is ungrateful to GIs and Veterans as has NO Military and Veterans Discount as a thank you to Veterans to provide resource to ensure Veterans (rare 7% of the population) and GIs (rare 1/2 of one percent of the population) opportunity to participate in American Dream Veterans and GIs' sacrifices have made possible for 100% of the population. To add insult to injury, upon our return to our vehicle we found a parking ticket in spite of the fact we have a valid California Disabled Veteran license plate. We were later told by Santa Rosa Junior College we were ticketed because we failed to have the college issued parking permit. Which we have to first purchase. Daily parking permit is $4.00. Combat-wounded in Iraq in 2008, Purple Heart recipient Alex Duncan was also ticketed by Santa Rosa Junior College. Duncan had his Purple Heart license plate. Duncan won his appeal. Santa Rosa Junior College can and must do better for the men and women who put their lives at risk to Serve our nation. I urge Santa Rosa Junior College to evaluate and change how it is actively mistreating our Active Duty GIs and our Veterans because places like here contribute to why Veterans succumb to suicide twice the rate of non-Veterans. We won't be back because when a place doesn't support our Active Duty GIs and we Veterans, we don't support that place. America is and will remain the Land of the Free only so long as it is the Home of the Brave who Serve or have Served in the US Armed Forces. The cost of every American's Freedom is seen at every military and Veterans' hospital and on every Veterans' disabled and Purple Heart license plate. read more

The Sata Rosa Jr. college is currently unable to evaluate grades, and transcripts are not available. The staff understands that transfer students need to meet the January 15th deadline to submit their transcripts, but they are uncertain about when this process will be completed. Unfortunately, no one in the admissions office is available to answer your questions. Once the grades are available, there is no way to expedite the request. The response you receive from the front desk is that there is nothing they can do, and with thousands of students waiting, you will just have to wait. read more

As a Resident Adviser and President of the now nonexistent Kent Hall Council dormitory I was held to a higher standard. But I did manage to find ways to get into trouble but like the Teflon Don, nothing ever stuck. Like the time my girlfriend and two other friends and I had an after hours beer party in the TV room and were able to hide the evidence before Mrs. Batey the dorm manager (RIP) reported to duty. SRJC was the perfect choice for someone like myself who wasn't quite ready for the 4 year school life and bought me some time to make decisions on where to transfer and finish up my major. You cannot beat the value or the quality of education. The facilities are fantastic and campus beautiful. A great place to start off your college career. read more

Communication and clear direction is apparently not a priority for some so called Instructors at SRJC. This place is great if you enjoy spending astronomical amounts of money for the privilege of watching free YouTube videos hosted by baby boomers who don't know how to how to use a computer and either leave the cursor in the middle of the screen or don't play in full screen. It's also great if you enjoy taking semester after semester of required remedial courses which don't earn college credits, but do keep you there longer and generate lots of sweet, sweet moolah for the faculty to give themselves another pay rise. The campus is nice, but schools are meant for learning, not to look at. Much like the town of Santa Rosa, and Sonoma County in general, it's extremely overrated and coasting on reputation, and everyone seems stuck in a giant self-congratulation loop with no ability to self-reflect on the issues it faces. It's time to hire some younger, more dynamic instructors, fix the parking, and not try to milk every penny out of students. read more

Excellent professors...feels like an east coast Ivy League school when you're walking on campus.

Problem with SRJC is it is a commenter junior college that does not have sufficient parking. If you take a class here, you need to plan on arriving an hour early to wait for a parking space. Santa Rosa voted to for funding of a parking garage years ago. Despite parking issues, this garage, that voters approved and paid for for parking, is used in part for storage with construction style fencing blocking large amounts of parking. In addition, the powers that be have decided that a commuter junior college needs to get into the student housing business and plans on building student housing at/over one of the busiest parking lots on campus. As a local tax payer of 25 years, I question why a two year, commuter junior college, with insufficient parking, is spending money to build on campus housing that will mean cars in spots 24/7. Why? We already have a four year college with on campus housing 20 minutes down the street serving this on campus experience need. Note, when you are looking for parking to hopefully attend your class, the empty spaces set aside for SRJC staff. Same staff that decided the tax payer funded parking garage is useful for storage. read more

The much anticipated 78,000-square-foot Bertolini Student Services Building on the Santa Rosa Junior College finally opened at start of the Spring 2010 semester to a tune of $39 million. What an impressive structure it is! Three floors of brand new everything. Even the facade matches the brick work on the 3-year-old Doyle Library and closely resembles the brick on the majestic campus' older 1900s buildings. Although I've only been privy to touring the first floor (the others are opening as departments located elsewhere on campus receive clearance and new furniture and move their equipment and files to offices above), I like what I see and taste. In my opinion, the highlight of the first floor is the open, wood-beam ceilinged dining room. Light, airy, contemporary. Behind it is the staff dining which still has yet to open, much to my disappointment since that's where I usually prefer to eat with colleagues. Fresh and Natural, the school's food service company, has outdone itself to encourage the student population to say on campus for their eats. The Servery offers several food stations from which to choose daily entrees: Mexican, Asian, Italian and The Grille for hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and the like. In addition, it offers a fresh salad bar and daily-made soups bar, soda fountain drinks, coffees (from Peets) and a decent selection of teas. While the food is not gourmet, for a college cafeteria, it more than fits the bill. Prices are good, too. For cozier dining, The Bear's Den behind The Servery is the place to go for fresh pastries, pre-made salads and sandwiches and wraps and other goodies. Perfect for a professor (and students) on the run. For those of us who are environmentally conscious, how cool that Fresh and Natural uses 100 percent compostable plates and knives, forks and spoons. The first floor's east wing houses the CyBear Center with computers and copying equipment for student use, a Senate meeting room and the Student Affairs office. In addition to offices upstairs, I understand a conference room(s) and a classroom or two also is in wrap-up stage. Think I'll go upstairs this week and take a peak. read more

I loved going to the SRJC. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It's a great way to get an education without paying an extreme amount of money. I received my AA degree in December 2007 and I still continue to take classes on and off. Of course there are cons with this school but what school doesn't have some cons? Of course there will be a couple bad teachers, or annoying students, etc...but overall it's a great opportunity for anyone! read more

I had the opportunity to attend The Santa Rosa Junior College and graduate with honors in 2018. I couldn't put in words how supportive each instructor was and how dedicated they were to each of their students. Their entire staff was incredible, and each department showed an overwhelming amount of support for my learning needs. My overall experience was absolutely amazing to say the least. Although the Petaluma campus is much smaller and more my taste, both locations are special in their different ways. As Petaluma tends to have a more laid back feel, Santa Rosa gives you the all-around busy atmosphere you would normally imagine in a college setting. This institution is a great asset to our community, and has changed my life in so many positive ways. Highly recommend!!! read more

I could only give my review based off of today which was an event the college held at the gym: Special Olympics Basketball Tournaments. First off, this is one of the most beautiful JC campuses I've ever seen! But most importantly for us, the gym was really nice and spacious as well. They unfortunately didn't allow us to pull out the bleachers so some of us had to sit on the floor or stand to watch, but everything was very clean and they let us eat our lunches inside as long as it wasn't in the gym and we threw away our trash! Location and cost is the only reason I am still attending. Parking is nonexistent honestly best to have mommy or daddy give you rides like your back in elementary school cause you will never find a spot. Their GE classes are all like this: 30+ hours of busy work every week, then forget everything you "learned" a week after the semester ends. My major was a two year program only to have the one intro class be transferable to a CSU. Two years! Only ONE class! Teachers are actually very nice if you have a high registration priority but even though they're nice they still pile on BS assignments till your brain dead. Disability counselors are very helpful but the regular academic counselors are worthless and try to put you in classes that they want, not what you want. I had to tell one almost four times that I did not want or need a class he kept putting in my academic plan. They also rush you out the door if you go over a 20 minute meeting, same with the transfer center, not very helpful when you have many questions. Everyone says the JC is great, its only good at being cheap and in my home town. Would have gotten better quality classes, more class flexibility and oh yeah not have wasted an extra two years on major classes that don't transfer if I had gone straight to a four year. If I could do it again I would only take duel-enrollment classes while in high school then gone to a four year to not deal with the BS at this college. I'm graduating with "high honors" but I honestly feel like I haven't learned a thing besides how to be stressed out with the workload pilled on every week for 4 years here. (2 year college...no no no. Two years of major classes that don't transfer and then two years of GE THEN two years of redoing those same major classes at a four year and more upper division GE) read more

I have been going to the Petaluma campus for a year now and cannot be happier. Entering the world of college level education after raising children and having a career, or two can be a scary experience. Especially when you are challenged with physical difficulties. The faculty and staff and students have all been amazing in helping guide me on my educational adventure. I just finished my summer classes and am looking forward to the fall. I received a good education there and also saw a lot illegal/against bylaws behavior from the front of the room, including: unwarranted sexual advances (off-campus), heavy bigotry, treating college adults like children, fear of office hour explanations about in-class claims of racial tension, unfair rule application (i.e., "you can do this, you there can't" probably age and ethnically-related that resulted in unfairly dropping a student), disability discrimination, and general hostile learning environments. This list is referencing five instructors from memory. There may have been more. I remember a couple STEM instructors who were doers that couldn't teach, and a segregated swimming class. You have to confess to avoid further degradation and victimization. There were more good instructors. I would be less worldly and knowledgeable if it weren't for SRJC. read more

Transferring credits can be a nightmare. If courses are not listed under the California Articulation System, the selfish JC instructors often will not let you test out of the class. (They want you to take their class so they can take your money). Do not participate in the classes if you can avoid doing so. If the instructor perceives how smart you really are, they will expect the moon from you when it comes time for essays, midterms and finals. That "A" will be forever elusive. Pretend to be stupid and then gradually let your essays improve towards the end of the semester. This will make the instructor think you have gotten much better and they will be equally satisfied thinking that they were responsible for helping you to improve. Why pay $60 dollars for a parking permit...when all that gives you is the privilege to fight over parking spots? Ya, I wouldn't even pay that much if you had a spot designated for me. The prices of books are a damn joke. $92 out-the-door for loose pages to put in a binder, not even a softcover ring bound! If you like online homework and classes that are pretty much online (but still require your physical presence for class) than this school is for you. And don't make suggestions to the staff about how the school could be run more efficiently....they will just stare at you like DMV employees. read more

This has to be one of the most beautiful campuses any junior college has ever seen. It's reminiscent of Harvard in MA, yet so much closer to home. I have taken several classes at this school and at the time it was ranked # 8 in the nation for top JCs to attend. I don't think it's reputation has been flushed down the toilet, nor will it in the years to come. However bad teachers/instructors are lurking wherever you flock to school. Just make sure to choose the classes that are right for you and get the most out of your post-high school experience. read more

Brick buildings covered in ivy? Are we at Harvard? I love this school. The campus is gorgeous. Brick buildings, ivy, oak trees, meandering pathways with benches and other monuments dating back to the first graduating classes . It's amazing. The new library is huge, well stocked, well lit, and well designed. The teachers are (generally - there are always exceptions!) people who are more interested in teaching and not just research. The diversity of students, staff and faculty contribute to a wonderful learning environment due to so many different backgrounds and viewpoints. For students you don't just get the 4.0+ high school valedictorians but you also don't just get slackers. You get professional people looking to forwarding their career or other members of the community who are just taking a course for fun. Same with professors, you have some part-timers that have other day jobs, others that received their PhD from a prestigious university; there's a mix of everyone contributing to some very lively discussions. Wouldn't Socrates be proud? The Doyle Scholarship is also incredible. What other community college do you know that has this? My expenses were pretty much covered thanks to the Doyle. Sadly, due to the financial crisis I know there have been cuts in the amount that has been able to be paid out. Hopefully that will be sorted out soon. SRJC prepared me for a seamless transition into UCLA. And guess what? I liked SRJC better. And in a number of cases the coursework I had at the JC was more demanding than that at UCLA . Be smart, save the money, save yourself from the "weeding out" process and pretentious readers. Go to SRJC before attending a 4 year university. Parking is my only gripe. Even with the new garage I hear it's still an issue. read more

I went to the Santa Rosa Junior College for oh.... About 7 years. On and off. And never graduated. All I ever heard from people when I told them I went to SRJC was "Oh it's such a beautiful campus!" Which it is. When it's not raining. Or blowing pollen everywhere. Or when you have to walk from one side to the next multiple times a day. For miles. Ugh. Santa Rosa Junior College is one of the highest rated JC's in the nation. And it shows. Classes are ridiculously hard here compared to other JC's. Harder than they really need to be. I transferred to another JC and had no problem graduating in two years. And really, who really cares if your JC is nationally ranked? It's a JC!!! Parking is also hell. Good luck finding a spot in one of the three hideously tiny lots. If you plan on finding a spot in the lot, plan on getting to school an hour and a half before your class starts to wait. They recently installed a parking garage which makes things a little better, but realistically, plan for street parking which is blocks and blocks away from the school. Or risk parking in the CVS or Safeway lots. Good luck. May the force be with you. If you live in the area and this is the only option, then go here. Not all the teachers are awesome, there are a few very bright bulbs I've had the pleasure of taking classes from, just to name a few: Steve Martin - Philosophy (a real philosopher) John Sappington - Photography (Practically changed my major to photo) Tom Falbo - Math (Actually made math easy, never was good at it) Rebecca Perlroth - Geology (I never gave a crap about geo until I had the pleasure of taking a course from this cheeky teacher) Mike Grabowski, Ray Hill, Mike Kinrade - Great CJ teachers I'm sure there are a few more, but I'll edit later if I remember them. One to watchout for (bad): John Ferdico (This guy is a nutcase) I'm not going to go into detail with this guy, but holy crap, avoid at all costs. read more

I was a theater student at Santa Rosa Junior College. I've got to perform in four amazing showers I really enjoyed most of my classes and the professors there were really dedicated to their jobs. Review is entirely for the cafeteria. $8.90 for a small plain-ass cheeseburger, fries and a bottled tea? You do realize this is a JUNIOR COLLEGE, right? Broke teenagers living off of retail jobs? Broke adults desperately trying to start a new career? Not to mention the service. Two dudes at the grill line gossiping, had to stand there and wait for the one idiot to finish his conversation in Spanish about taking upskirt pictures (complete with descriptive hand gestures) or something before he could be stuffed to take my order. Then he drops my cheese on the serving counter and tries to put it back on the burger. Also got the order wrong after all that. Area with the self-serve mayo and ketchup is crusty and nasty as fuck too. Went to College of Marin years back, then to UC Santa Barbara for a useless film degree. Returned to school a few years back, via SRJC's Business Marketing program. First day in class I'm studying marketing and PR with Roy Gattinella, who in my opinion rivals the best teachers I had at UC--but we get him at a local JC for a fraction of the price. SERIOUSLY appreciated this teacher's skills and enthusiasm for his subject. That was some quality learning! Other teachers were hit and miss--just like my UC days. Some aren't engaged, it's part of any school. Currently taking a bunch of web design classes online, and again, some of the teachers are engaged, while others aren't. But it's awesome to have access to these courses online with local teachers for additional help. Yes, the Maggini Hall bathrooms need some remodeling. Yes, parking sucks, but I didn't mind parking a few blocks down the street and getting a little exercise. Books are also absurdly priced, which has always been an issue as long as I can remember, except now you can hit up places like Amazon and Chegg for much better deals. I don't know why the JC doesn't try at least a little to compete with that. Why rent a book for $100 when I can rent it online for $40--or even buy it for $60? read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. But now I will. I really enjoyed my time at this college. I took a plethora of classes that really allowed me to get interested in a variety of subjects as well as be able to choose the major that was best for me. The counselors are very helpful and most take their time explaining educational plans that work best for each individual. I was at s loss at how to go about my educational path, but one of the counselors sat down and lated it all down for me. Her helpfulness really took a whole lot of stress off my back and really made me look forward to the road ahead for me. Here I am five years later. I transferred to Sonoma state and received my bachelors degree in 2013. I never thought I would attain such a degree. Thank you to SRJC and all of its wonderful staff for helping me reach quite an achievement. read more

I had a wonderful experience attending SRJC for 1.5 years after graduation from SRHS. I was on the championship tennis team in 1964 and transferred to American University in Wash. DC. Graduated to become a career chemist for 48 years. My years with SRHS and SRJC were what jump started my professional career with FDA, major pharmaceuticals and Herbalife. There is NO parking. Out of desperation I parked in the CVS lot right Nextdoor and got my car towed and $350 ticket!! I was on campus over an hour early and there was NO parking! I left 18 months ago, and they sent me a $100 bill with no explanation, and threats to send it to a collection agency. I was a BOG Fee Waiver/GI Bill student, so I shouldn't owe $100, but I don't live close enough to visit to find out about this. This is really frustrating and feels dishonest.
