Came here after visiting the library of congress- capital south metro station is only 8 minutes away. 3.5/5 They have a lot of outdoor seating, some indoor upstairs seating and minimal indoor first floor seating. We had just missed happy hour which is from 4-7pm for some drink specials. We opted for the Al pastor and Barbacoa tacos on corn tortillas and the spicy cheese nachos. Both were ok but not out of this world. It was fairly loud so brace yourself if you don't like people yelling or shouting- not the place to go. Some flies going around and landing on food upstairs indoors but I know it's hard with people going in/out. Overall, aight but not particularly I would go out of the way for. read more

I've been coming to Santa Rosa Taqueria consistently for almost two years, and it has become one of my go-to spots. As a regular, I can say they have stayed consistent with their food, service, and overall experience. My usual order is the Diablo shrimp taco on a corn tortilla (no corn and no onions), a side of chips and queso, and their Limoncello margarita. The Diablo shrimp taco is always flavorful, and the portion sizes are great. Their queso is one of my favorites; It tastes fresh, like real cheese, and pairs perfectly with their chips. Santa Rosa is a sit-down restaurant that also offers takeout. Their setup is unique: you order your food, receive a buzzer, and once it goes off, you pick up your order from the pickup section and bring it back to your table. They stay consistently busy, especially on Taco Tuesdays, but they always deliver a great experience. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, and I appreciate how consistent they are every time I visit. Since Santa Rosa is also a margarita bar, I highly recommend trying the Limoncello margarita it's my personal favorite and a must-try. read more

We ordered the shrimp nachos, the margarita flight, and was there for happy hours, so we had two beers that come with chips and salsa. All the food came out quick and hot. As far as the flights go, they were pretty good the house Margarita and jalapeño margarita was definitely strong one of my favorites. When you go in, it's a walk up in order so you don't deal with waiters or waitresses and once your order is ready, you have to pick it up the pick up area. The ambience is casual and they have an upstairs dining area and also plenty of outside seating which is where we sat, but the building is cute and fun. read more

"El Seis De Mayo" Yes... I missed Cinco De Mayo, but was still feeling festive the next day and was craving a frozen margarita. And for sure Santa Rose Taqueria definitely didn't disappoint.... Best frozen drink I ever had !!! Also if you want a quiet atmosphere, definitely dont go here during happy hour...it gets very loud. Had to scream to speak with someone right next to me. We're from Texas, where there's a taqueria on almost every corner, so we rarely choose Mexican food while traveling--our local Tex-Mex is just that good. However, I made an exception on this trip because Santa Rosa Taqueria is a restaurant by Spike Mendelsohn, who competed on Top Chef many years ago. As a fan, I try to visit Top Chef-affiliated restaurants whenever possible. We ordered loaded shrimp nachos, an asada steak taco on a flour tortilla, and a diablo shrimp taco on a flour tortilla. We shared all three. I didn't particularly enjoy the shrimp, (it was fried) on the nachos, but everything else was delicious! Loved their green sauce and their red had a real kick. I tried one of their cranberry margaritas. O M Gee. That was the strongest margarita I have ever had. I don't really like to taste alcohol, so I only drank half and was a little tipsy when I left, but for more 'seasoned' drinkers, there's a lot of 'bang for your buck' in just one drink! I came here with a friend for dinner before seeing a show at the Folger Theater and we really enjoyed it! There's not a ton of indoor seating but the patio is nice and large. The happy hour drink special is 2 margs and chips and queso/salsa for 22 bucks which I think is a great deal. AND you can pick any marg including frozen! We both got the mango frozen marg which was so delicious. It was incredibly mango flavored and also really creamy and not icy like some frozen drinks can be. I tried the fish, al pastor, and barbacoa tacos. Really enjoyed the fish and the sauciness of the barbacoa! I wish the al pastor was a bit more tender but the roasted pineapple was a nice touch. I was late coming, but I met a friend and his group for his birthday outing at this spot. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the staff are nice. It's a short walk from the Eastern Market metro, and if you have a group, it's pretty easy to accommodate. My friends had a huge table outside and it wasn't all that crowded. Not bad for a Saturday night! I only got to try a margarita flight which was really good -- 4 flavors that I cannot remember, but each one was unique. I had ordered a tres leches cake too, but I ended up giving it to the birthday boy. When I came back to order another one they said they were out... and it was only 15 minutes later, such a bummer! We went to this popular spot for lunch on a Thursday. It's busy, but the line moved fast. We ordered the loaded sheet pan nachos and the Santa Rosa burrito. The nachos were definitely loaded. They could be a meal in themselves for two people! Everything about them was delicious. The queso, the fresh sliced jalapeño, the guac, all of it! The burrito was also very large and filling. Good food can only carry a place so far. Consistently bad service, repeated mistakes, and treating customers like they're inconveniencing you eventually outweigh the quality of the food. Five separate times now, my pickup orders have been wrong or missing items. I understand mistakes happen, and I've tried to be patient and understanding because everyone has off days. Unfortunately, the bigger issue is the consistently poor customer service. Almost every interaction with staff has been rude, dismissive, or unhelpful - including from some of the kitchen staff. The only positive experience I've had was with one gentleman in the kitchen who noticed how long I was being ignored by another employee handing off in house orders and stepped in to help me himself. He heard me ask the young lady for a certain sauce 3 separate times and she looked at me, blinked, and still gave the wrong amount. (You get the sense that the few nice staff may be fed up with rude ones as well.) Today was the last straw. They made my coworker pay for an order that had already been paid for, then had me come all the way back during my work shift to deal with their mistake. Instead of simply apologizing and correcting the order, staff wanted to open up the incorrect order, inspect it, and discuss how I may have ordered it rather than take accountability. What makes this especially disappointing is that I work on Capitol Hill and had been recommending this place to coworkers because the food is good. Multiple people from my office started ordering because of my recommendation. Even my manager picked up food last week and commented on the same rude attitude from staff. read more

The tacos here reminded me of the tacos I had back when I visited Cabo San Lucas a couple years ago! I love the strong flavors. The building is clean and the staff are quick. Admittedly, the tacos were a bit pricey for tacos, but the flavors were delicious! I got all 3 with flour tortillas. Al pastor is usually my go-to meat choice, but I felt like getting 2 carne asada tacos and 1 al pastor taco this time. Honestly, although they were both good, the al pastor was still better. The way that the pineapple combined with the meat was just wonderful. I loved the green and red salsas as well. I'm not the best at handling spice, but I do like to go through that bit of suffering for tacos! My only complaint about the tacos would be that the tortillas weren't grilled/charred enough for me. The service was quick. They give you those buzzing pagers that tell you when your food is done. There's a big water tank full of cold water at the register, which really came in handy after all the salsa I put on my tacos! The building is decorated colorfully with a lot of tables and seating. Upstairs, there were a lot of TVs with different things to watch. The tables each had their own thing for napkins, which I really appreciate since the tacos can get a bit messy. I've passed by this place so many times and never stopped until today. My friend told me about it earlier this week so we finally got together today. The tacos, black beans and rice, and chips are so good. The beef taco is the best. The staff are friendly and the place has a fast paced feeling with it being right on Capitol Hill but it definitely doesn't lose the culture it is representing. Greta staff and food!
