The restaurant stands out to me due to nice portions and tasty Birria Tacos. I had already eaten two of 3 medium sized Birria Tacos when I decided to review, so photographed my daughter's quesadilla. The tacos are fried on a griddle and the beef is served from simmering in Birria Broth. Good quality beef and a tasty dipping broth on the side, you also get about 6 ounces of rice, sliced fresh radish and limes. Your choice of cilantro, onions, pico de gallo on the top of 3 medium tacos. The tacos were delicious and rice was nicely cooked medium grain spanish rice, not puffed or short grain rice. The setup of the restaurant was an open griddle with ingredients in a cold line and soup warmer behind counter glass in front. Ordering is via menu pencil card. Be sure to ask what your main meal comes with, and the size of the sides you may want. The Birria Tacos came with rice, which I did not know at first. There are 1oz sides of hot sauce and crema and sour cream and it is a bit confusing to order. But it was good eating so I did not mind very much. We ordered a side of guac which came in a large plastic side container and was very good. Chunks of avocado and some chunks of tomato as well. Pricing very reasonable. I stopped by here for a quick lunch. They did not have a line which was a plus. They said they were out of chorizo which was a bummer. The tortillas were freshly grilled while the meat and toppings were premade and added to nice warm tortilla. Upon ordering a teenage patron began leaning over the glass pointing at the toppings he wanted and had he's hands close to the food. At no time did the staff ask him to stop to maintain the integrity and sanitation of the food. The patron then put his hands in a bag of chips. I notified the sales associate that she should throw the bag since he put his hands in it. I then checked out and asked for chips and salsa. The sales associate then gave me the bag the patron put his hands in. I told her again the bag should be thrown away because the boy in front of me put his hands in it. She placed the bag back on the counter and gave me a different bag. I will never eat here again knowing they willingly served food that they know was touched by other customers and allow customers to reach over the glass and nearly touch all of the toppings. This is unsanitary. $23 for 3 good tacos, chips that someone else's hands may have been in, and unseasoned guacamole. read more

Not usually one to have tacos two days in a row, but I'm glad I made the exception! I hadn't been to Taco Birria in over a year, and today's visit was a pleasant surprise. I tried the Al Pastor and chicken tacos, both were packed with flavor, and the spicy red sauce at the end really brought it all together. It's a small, no frills spot with a few tables and high chairs if you want to dine in. The food quality has definitely gone up since my last visit. While the customer service could be a little warmer, I could see myself becoming a regular if they keep this level of flavor and consistency, especially since it's right around the corner from my office. read more

Taco de Birria is a hidden gem. It is owned by Rice Bar, and there is very little advertising outside, so it looks like a bibimbap joint. It could definitely use a little makeover. Inside, it is very plain and unassuming. They have a tarp with the menu items listed, all of which are tacos, quesadillas, and soup. All that being said, Do not sleep on this place! It is delicious!! The birria tacos and bean quesadillas were insanely good! I loved the meal and will definitely be going back. The meat was juicy and tender. They garnish the dish with radishes and pico. Stopped in recently - straightforward menu. went with a chicken quesadilla and beef birria burrito. Quesadilla was nice, a bit salty. Not sure what makes the burrito birria, just a standard burrito. was big and messy but not particularly memorable. you choose your toppings similar to a chipotle and the salsas are ok. Stopped by here for lunch with coworkers. It's a Chipotle style concept where you order and tell the employee what you want down the assembly line. I ordered the taco de birria beef. The beef was quite tough and I found the birria lacking any robust flavors. This meal was quite underwhelming. Nice staff, underwhelming food. I had a major craving for authentic Mexican, and upon seeing a 4.5 rating on Yelp, I beelined my way over here. Setup inside is simple - nothing super fancy -- smallish tables and chairs, which indicate this is more of grab and go spot than a sit-down. Of course, food prep is your typical 'Chipotle' style, with staff loading up plates/bowls with varied ingredients. I did notice that the serving area seemed like it could use a wipe down or two, but I do understand that the lunch hour can get busy. Customer service was very friendly, with employees double checking to see if I wanted any additional ingredients, and confirming everything in my order was OK. I opted for two birria beef tacos, loaded to the brim with all the noms, so I expected a flavor commotion when eating. Instead, I got hella ingredients, and nooooo flavor - which is pretty crazy, considering how hyped up this spot was on Yelp. The best part of my meal was the rice, which I found a bit ironic, considering the former name of this place. As someone who frequently eats authentic Mexican food, I was seriously underwhelmed, and wondered if I had just caught this place on a 'bad day'. I was in town for a wedding and was starving looked around to see what was close and saw Taco de Birroa was a short walk so decided to give it a go. I ordered some chicken tacos and Burris ramen. The chicken tacos weren't too much to write about but the Birria ramen!!!!! I got the beef the first time and wow wow wow. Super hot and fresh and so so flavorful!!!!!!! I couldn't believe that this came from this smalll shop. The food was so good that I returned the next day and instead of chicken tacos ordered Birria tacos and the Birria ramen again. The Birria tacos were so good again flavorful. Cheesy. Til today there's only one other place that I've had Birria this good. If you're in the area you should definitely try this place! read more

First, I appreciate the simplicity of the menu, you can order a quesadilla, tacos, or a burrito (chicken or beef). It gets super busy during lunchtime so just be aware of that. It's Chipotle-style, so you can build your dish to your liking. I got a chicken burrito with black beans, rice, and different sauces (red and green). The meat was tasty; it was juicy, flavorful, and I liked how it was shredded, rather than in chunks. Overall, the burrito wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best. The tortillas they use are quite thick and got soggy quickly, which isn't ideal if you're eating to-go. The toppings weren't my favorite, the beans and rice were not the ideal texture - they were both a bit too crunchy in my opinion. I would have loved some more flavor in the beans and the rice tasted like generic Mexican rice you can get at the grocery store. Across the street from my hotel and I wanted to Try and compare compared to what it's like out east. Ambiance was pretty cool and low key. Perfect for a taco shop. Decent selection of hot sauce... trust me when most places in DMV just use Tabasco. Service was spot on. Staff was receptive, friendly and tried to help keep the line moving. I had the quesadilla and the chicken soup to go. Flavor was spot on, but would say recommendations would be to eat it there. Visiting DC this week. We just bought tacos de birra from Rice Bar across from our hotel. The tacos were delicious, but the rice was cold. The service was terrible. One person was in the back room but hurried out to take our order. The other person was at the end of the counter behind a screen and on her phone and only came out when summoned by the first one. If it weren't for the delicious tacos and broth, I would have given this two stars on the basis of the service. read more

Nothing special about the ambiance - it's street-level and I sat at the window counter enjoying my tacos - but it's within steps of the NOMA-Gallaudet Metro, so it's easy to get to for my next visit. It's your typical counter service joint where they pile on toppings, so you can mix and match to suit your tastes. I wish they were open more! I bet commuters going home would be interested here. They also don't post their hours so be there between 10am and 230pm on weekdays. I went in around 1pm on a Monday and there weren't too many customers. I was a bit confused how everything worked and wish they had greeted me a little to help. I ended up going to the register first when I should have gone to the food. I was thrown off based on where the menu was. The employees were friendly but they all looked so bored. I opted for the spicy curry popcorn chicken. I got a massive portion that I will split between two meals for sure. The employee who made it definitely cared to make me a great meal and I thought she did a great job. I love the variety of ingredients too. I wasn't given a bag and about halfway into my walk my container got really hot so wish that was offered to me. Also I didn't know they had the Stubborn brand of soda or I would have gotten one. Overall if they figure out the logistics and up the customer service this place could be great! Good food and definitely welcome in a spot that is a little too far from union market and other spots that it could get a lot of business. read more
