This is the first restaurant I went to after arriving in London, and the food and drinks were delicious. As it was close to my hotel, I was already planning to come back and this would have been an automatic five-star if it weren't for some seriously terrible customer service when it was time to pay my bill. I attempted to use my Wise card as I often do when I travel and I made sure it had well over $1,000 in it before I departed. When I paid, I got a notification from Wise on my phone that I'd been charged. The waiter told me my payment had been declined, and I asked him if he could please verify because of the notification I'd received. He went to talk to a superior and she came storming over with a receipt that said "void" (meaning it did not, in fact go through) and repeatedly pointed at the word and said sarcastically "do you know what this means? do you know what this word means?" even as I took out a credit card to pay with. She was also speaking quite loudly so it got the attention of other tables, which I didn't appreciate. I said of course, I just wanted verification before I used an alternate form of payment. Even as I was taking out my credit card to pay, she continued to berate me and say "We deserve to be paid, we need to be paid," when I clearly had no intentions of not paying. What was a simple matter to resolve turned into a scene; needless to say I didn't return as planned which is really too bad because the food was great, but I prefer to spend my money at restaurants that are able to resolve these matters without shouting and berating a customer. read more

The absolute last thing I expected to find while showing my family around Nottinghill was an authentic Italian restaurant... and I mean authentic - you better brush up on your Italian because the manager as well as all the staff speak Italian (better than they speak English!) . One thing I will recommend is the Buffalo mozzarella and San Daniele starter. Heaven on a plate. Follow that with a pizza (holy moly, these are AMAZING. Wood fired, the whole shebang) with the mozzarella and San Daniele. You will NOT regret this. The antipasti are fresh and incredibly tasty. The truffle pasta smelled amazing but lacked a little in truffle taste, but having said that the amount of truffle on the dish itself was insane. Highly, highly recommend! read more

Following a friends recommendation I visited Saporitalia hoping for an authentic italian pizza. Although I went in a bit of a celebratory mood I am unbiased in giving it a top mark. I picked the special pizza of the day featuring smoked mozzarella, tomatoes and a dense cover of rucola leaves. All toppings were strikingly fresh and composed lovely with the soft, chewy dough. To be honest I've never noticed this joint on Portobello before, but would come back. We were a large table of 12, sat downstairs. The restaurant is inviting, nice ambience and good service. They had the standard Italian varieties -- pizza, pasta but also grilled dishes. I had the mixed seafood grill platter which was delicious -- seabass, salmon, shrimp and squid with some salad. Huge portion. The tiramisu and sorbets were also delicious. Vegetarians at the table were also happy with the options. Must come back and try the pasta. My friend and I went to this place while in Notting Hill and were excited based on the reviews, once we received our food we were not as happy. The garlic bread was flat oven baked dough with olive oil and basil. The pizza was just okay, nothing special and the asparagus didn't have cheese on it as mentioned on the menu. Authentic Italian restaurant. If you are missing Italy, you will want to stop into Saporitalia for a fix. My friends and I went for the pizza's and stayed on for the warm and friendly atmosphere. Seriously, it is so charming, cosy and welcoming here that we just didn't want to leave. Of course, we got a gentle nudge to give up our table but even that was done with the utmost tact. Saporitalia is set just off the market on Portabello Road in Notting Hill. It's not a huge place but they lay the tables out well. In front is a long table and buffet. The kitchen is at the front also so you can see the chefs at work. In the back is more seating, where we were. They do take bookings if you need to. They are so accomodating that they asked if the air conditioning was suitable for us where we sat. Now, that is caring for your customers. The waiter we had was funny and friendly without being overbearing or intrusive. He assisted with wine and pizza choices too. Speaking of the pizzas...DELICIOUS! Real thin crust, sauce with flavour, fresh mozzarella and basil, YUM! Everyone enjoy their pies. Oh, the other customers add to the ambience here. It was as if we were dining with other friends around us because people smiled and exchanged pleasantries with us and others. My girlfriend and I walked around Notting Hill in search of Octopus or vongole for dinner, and after looking at many menus, decided to try out this place. We are both chefs in our own fare, but we weren't looking for anything spectacular, just to satisfy a craving. Let's start with the most offensive part; we ordered a bottle of pinot grigio, she allowed me to taste it, which I appreciated, I said "It's okaaaay," and she continued to pour our glasses. I'm not one to complain, but we both realized that the bottle was off, and we couldn't finish a sip. We explained this to her while we were waiting an excessive amount of time for our vongole and frutti di mare; and she insisted we pay for at least the 2 glasses we didn't drink. We later explained we didn't have any of the wine and requested that we not pay for something that was off, she tried haggling us to pay for one glass. This was a cheap bottle of wine, I'm sure not more than 3 quid on the shelves. If she had checked in on us earlier, we would have gotten something else, but she hadn't, nor did she check on how are food was after it was served, or serve any bread with our meal. Sadly, even more disappointing...I don't mind small portions, if the food is decent, but 22 quid for overcooked and rubbery mussels, and a head on shrimp that was so boiled it's skin could not be cracked off. It's exoskeleton should never be so soft that it splinters. I will give them one point for the pasta, as it was cooked "al dente," but service and food was terrible. A Neapolitan pizza and pasta bolthole took over this space a few months ago from a nondescript cafe I can't even remember the name of. And wow, just wow... it's so much better now! I think it's my new fav place in Notting HIll. The woodburning oven sits front-of-house and keeps the area warm and cozy during these cool autumn evenings, but also makes it pretty hot on the warmer days of the summer months (my one and only small gripe). There's further seating in the back and downstairs, so don't get discouraged if it looks full when you first step inside. The staff is the real deal--most, if not all, are southern Italians, as are many of the patrons. The pizza is obviously the draw here with blistered crust and perfect toppings--the calzone is perfect for weeknight takeaway with a green salad and bottle of red. But don't miss the pastas, either. We've tried the spaghetto alle vongole and the lamb-stuffed cannelloni (a house special). Both were amazingly well prepared. We mopped up sauces with warm charred pieces of garlic focaccia on the side. Wines are standard Italian favorites and are well priced. It's one of those places where the bill comes, and you feel like you've actually gotten exactly what you've paid for. An excellent date spot for sure: great ambiance, not too loud or bright, and excellently priced. The only thing I would add is some cannoli for the dessert menu. We showed up at 19:15 on a Friday night without a reservation. The owner told us we could get a table, as long as we were out by 21:00 because he had a reservation, which was fine. We ordered a bottle of wine, had dinner and dessert. Then we were just left waiting till well past 21:00. I don't mind waiting for my check after dinner, it was just rather odd since they had specifically asked us to finish by a certain time, and then to be ignored. Also, when we ordered our dessert, the server said to us "let me ask my manager", like, we can't have dessert? I realize we didn't have a reservation, and they were busy, but there were other tables open, and it was still well before 21:00. Overall though, our food was delicious. We all had different pizzas and we loved them. I ordered the special, and that's not what I got, but whatever I got was still really good. I would skip the tiramasu though, the ladyfingers weren't softened. Despite all the weird service issues, we loved the food, and ambiance. I would definitely come back again when I am in London. This is a very hard review. Ok first of all, pizza is excellent. Unfortunately my experience has been doomed by a couple of drawbacks. First, I think it's UNACCEPTABLE that we made a reservation for 8 people at 21:15, we were told one hour before to arrive absolutely on time or in 5 minutes our table would have been given away, and then we WAITED for 35 minutes outside. And it's cold outside nowadays. That's simply unacceptable. Just for it it should deserve to have 1 star. Second, we waited ONE HOUR AND A HALF for our pizza. It's a damn pizza ok, you need at most 20 minutes to make it, one hour and a half, again, it's unacceptable. 1 star. But then unfortunately the pizza came, and it was bloody delicious. Seriously, this is definitively the best pizza in London. That's why it's hard, how am I supposed to rate something like that? it's something like 1 star for service and 5 stars for the food. In conclusion I gave it a 3 stars, even if my heart would give 2. But I don't want my rating to convince people not to come here, as this place is bloody delicious, and maybe the service is just a unique event. Hope so. Damn that pizza was good!! read more

Best pizza I've had in London. Crust was thin, crispy, and delicious. Excellent quality buffalo mozzarella with a few scattered leaves of basil, and fantastic fresh tomato sauce. Pizza stood up to the liquidy cheese well. The drinks here were all good, but came at a price - the food was the insignificant component in the cost of our bill! The food. Well here we go... So, they had a special on the menu - Spaghetti Bolognese. 4 out of 5 of us opted for it. We asked the waiter what to go for and he was completely pushing it to us.So we did. Perfect, tangy sauce with amazing mozzarella di Bufala slices laid on top and a nice wood-oven baked crust - all necessary for a quality Naples-style pizza. As mentioned by a previous reviewer the price is fair. Even with the current weak Dollar situation. A couple tips I learned while dining here: - If you don't order an appetizer, the server will ask if you'd like bread. At this you might think he is asking if you'd like complimentary bread. We later found out when we got the bill, we unknowingly ordered one of otheir appetizers. - If they ask you sparkling or flat water and you say "flat", they will bring out a bottle of still water. If you do not want to pay for water you must insist on "tap". In all a delicious dinner was had. I'd come back again when I'm in London but next time I will already be in on their tricks. One of my go-to spots for authentic Italian. The pasta is fresh and delicious, and the pizzas are huge. My favourite though is the homemade calzone. Service can be slow to acknowledge you, which is hard when you're starving, but fine once you're enjoying your meal. Yum. This little restaurant serves up authentic Italian food with an emphasis on pizza. Though the restaurant has additional seating downstairs, the ambiance is absolutely dreadful downstairs, so it's best to book a table to ensure you get a table upstairs and can watch the pizza master do his thing with great precision. My husband and I started with the fried mozzarella and it was delicious. We both ordered pizzas and my initial reaction was, "Hmm, the crust is not cooked enough" but something magical happened over the course of eating - the crust almost continuously cooked on my plate and by the second slice (YES, they actually slice the pizza!), the rubbery crust seemed to have firmed up. Now, the actual crust of the pizza (around the rim) was perfect; little burnt bits here and there. A couple of notes for the one star deduction: 1. Service was just OK; typical English service being not attentive and having to constantly flag down the server. 2. The giant TV mounted on the wall next to the wood burning pizza oven. Get ride of it. It kills the ambiance when I look up and see "Bitchin' Kitchen" playing on the food network. There is absolutely no need for a giant TV in this small restaurant - let the beautiful wood burning oven be the center of attention in the restaurant. 3. The bathrooms need to be maintained and looked after. Both trips to the bathroom I found toilet paper all over the floor, the toilet seat half falling off, and paper towels in the drain of the sink. It's not hard - have someone check on the bathroom every hour and make the necessary corrections. Poorly maintained bathrooms can really ruin an experience at a restaurant. You are in the middle of enjoying a delicious meal and suddenly your bladder calls and you have no choice to deal with it because, well, it's your bladder. The last thing you want to do is walk into a dirty, un-kept bathroom which smells like a backed up sewer. Will I be back? Yes. Will I hope the TV has been removed from the exposed brick wall. 3.5 stars max. On a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 pm the restaurant was pretty bustling. This is to be expected given that it's literally on protobello road market. We had made reservations, which I would recommend, particularly if your group is larger than just a couple of people. We sat in the first room, right where the large brick oven is, which was nice because we got to watch all the pizzas being made. The back room, though, does seem more cozy and intimate, so I would generally prefer that. There is also a small downstairs, which is likely just used only at the business of times (perhaps dinners). Our waitress was nice, but had a hard time understanding what we were saying. We ended up ordering one marinara and one margherita. First, these are a great size and one will definitely feed a person. The pizzas are good, but they suffer from the same thing that many other Neapolitan pizzas do - they are a little bland. Neapolitan pizzas are one of the hardest things to master and each individual component must shine without overpowering the others. Here, the crust and tomato sauce had quite weak flavors. The tomato sauce tasted very much like pure tomato - not flavored well, not spiced well, but very tomatoey. It wasn't actively bad, but it was more one note. The crust was also relatively flavorless, and in terms of shape and texture, was not as doughy and thick as many other Neapolitan pizzas tend to be. Margherita - the same crust and sauce comments from above, but I actually liked the mozzarella on this pizza and I'm quite picky about the mozzarella. It didn't blend as well as I would've liked with the pizza, but the flavor of it was pretty good. It was stronger than a regular house mozzarella normally used for the regular margherita. Marinara - one note on this, the garlic that comes on the pizza is roasted with oil. I prefer fresh garlic on the pizza and asked for them to provide this in lieu of the roasted. They accommodated this request without any problems. Also, the marinara did not come with oregano, which is unusual, but when I asked, they provided it on the side. One note about the risotto - two tables next to us ordered this dish and both complained at its lack of taste. One woman even sent it back and ordered the spaghetti with claims instead and liked that much better. She noted that the risotto seemed to be lacking salt and actual flavor. The pizzas were good enough, but I'd probably only go back if I happened to be in the area. read more

The manager of this charming spot is the main reason for our 5-star review. He couldn't be sweeter, and had wonderful recommendations. We started with the parmigiana di melenzane which our host suggested, and it was delicious. I licked my plate clean. My husband had the pappardelle porcini e salsiccia which has a truffle sauce and I have never tasted a better dish! My main was paccheri alla pizzaiola which was also quite amazing. The garlic bread was made fresh when ordered in their stone oven, and our dessert was two shots of Limoncello and a lemon sorbet served inside a whole lemon! I ordered pasta with eggplant which was really well made and my friend had a delicious pizza. We finished with deserts and Limoncello, which was yummy as well. While u wait for the food they give you bread and olives, and you can see that they are good quality olives...big and juicy with olive oil. i felt that the clients are treated with respect by making quality tasty food which is the most important in my opinion. if you want to get away from the crowd in Portobello, make a stop here. read more

For some reason, we decided we needed Pizza on our trip to London, despite coming from Boston. Maybe we felt like you dont know a city's food scene until you eat the pizza. Or maybe we just wanted pizza. Anyway, we came here on a rainy night and sat near the door (a little chilly). We got the zucchini string appetizer which was excellent (hard to mess up fried zucchini). For our pizza, we stayed simple and ordered the buffalo mozzarella, which was great - perfectly cooked, great blend of cheese and sauce. Was attending the Portobello film festival with my wife, however we failed to eat that sunday. So we walked around the corner and went into the first decent looking restaurant and that was Saporitalia. We were received by a very nice gentleman with a nice italian accent which always convinces my wife for that the food will be good for some reason :) We Ordered some eggplant pasta made in their the wood oven and a lasagne from the wood oven as well. Both were very freshly made and tasted great! The seafood risotto, sometimes a special on the menu is really amazing. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves savory risotto with lots of seafood such as shrimp and clams.
