In…read morehindsight, that's to be expected it being sunny, 65F degrees outside, oh and spring break was in full swing. So this Farmers market is between OK and Good so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I think if there were more vendors out here it would be great. Despite the fact that it's kinda small for a farmers market, I was surprised at the variety I saw. Macaroons, ice cream, coffee, produce, flowers, hungry ghost bread, candles, soaps, meats, eggs, hungry ghost bread, polish pastries, handmade jewelry, live music, hand spun wool yarn, did I mention hungry ghost bread? I repeated HGB because they had a line that wouldn't quit. They had 5 different kinds of breads available, plus a couple of cookies for sale. Their bread is the best, there honestly is nothing like it so try it out if they haven't sold out by the time you get there. They had a wheel you could spin for a chance to get discounted or free things and we won a $2 off coupon at the polish pastry tent. We got this savory donut thing (I totally forgot what it's called) filled with squash, potato, cabbage and cheese wow. It was really really good. Picked up some produce where they had a lot of heirloom varieties you definitely wouldn't find in a mass produced supermarket. I ended up getting some watermelon radishes, rainbow carrots, and these funky potatoes that are Ruby red when you cut them. They had some nice live music going as well. Would definitely come back to pick up some goodies.

The ones I particularly patronize are Red Fire Farm (this being, from both its size and the number of its patrons, the market's star) and Hungry Ghost Bread. They often do have live music, and while it's crowded, well ... I'm a veteran of the Haymarket Friday/Saturday pushcarts in Boston, so "crowded" is a matter of perspective. Yes, the prices are as high as one can expect for fresh farm produce and boutique operations, but it isn't as if one can't go to Big Y or Stop & Shop to find poorer quality at a cheaper price. As it happens, they do take SNAP, and while most people on SNAP can't afford to blow their wad on a $6 pint of grape tomatoes or a $7 loaf of bread, the market will double up to $10 a week, which makes these things quite affordable. Last week I left with a pint of tomatoes, a loaf of bread, and a bunch of very tart chives. Finestkind!

Johnny's has been one of my favorite produce markets for years now. In the spring, before local…read moreproduce is ready, they sell vegetable and decorative plants. They continue to carry flower plants and herbs into the summer and fall. In July they begin to carry absolutely beautiful flower bouquets that are fresh cut every day. Since they're fresh, they last so much longer than ones from the grocery store. And they have such an interesting variety of flowers in them. They have become a summer staple for us! They sell tomatoes that they grow themselves that are absolutely delicious. I always grab some extra cherry (or grape?) tomatoes to snack on while driving home. They sell other produce that they grow themselves or get from other local farms. There are signs up telling you what town and state each product is from. They carry milk and yogurt from a local dairy farm, Smyth's Trinity Farm (Enfield, CT). The chocolate milk is heavenly. They also started stocking fresh bread from Hartford Baking Company. Johnny's has been great during Covid. The store has the doors open and fans running, providing plenty of ventilation. They require masks and social distancing. The employees are always wearing masks (and wearing them properly, covering nose and mouth) which makes me feel comfortable bringing my 1 year old, who cannot wear a mask, in with me.

They also sell some produce from other local farmers. The family claims to offer the best tomatoes in the Pioneer Valley. I agree. I regularly buy their "seconds" to make tomato soup, a favorite of mine. I find their seconds better than the firsts offered by many stands and certainly better than most tomatoes sold at supermarkets. The variety of produce available here is delightful. Ratatouille fans will be in their glory, trying to select which variety of eggplant, summer squash and more to enhance this classic for this visit. For those who like their ratatouille with a kick, the farmers have developed a passion for peppers and offer a wide variety of these difficult-to-grow-in-Massachusetts veggies. Hey, even if you're not a cook, but a watercolorist, this is the place to purchase all of your "models." Imagine piles of yellow, green, purple and orange peppers in a beautiful, handthrown ceramic bowl. After you paint their portrait, stretch yourself in the kitchen, take out the wok and stewpot and make something tasty. The farm also offers fresh flowers grown on site and bedding plants in the spring.

The…read morecatnip we started two years ago has grown into the catnip forest, now enjoyed by all the neighborhood cats. Also, it is a good place to find whatever fruits and vegetables in season. They have an excellent selection and their peppers, both sweet and hot, absolutely cannot be beat. Friendly and helpful staff, I can't recommend them highly enough.

Barely 1/4 cup of syrup for 3 pancakes and no butter. The result? A dry breakfast. It was an hour wait. Still has a cool factor but server was so crazy busy that she never offered more coffee. Probably best to buy a jug of the syrup next time and skip the breakfast.

The market is in a parking lot behind 50 Payson Avenue and during the summer it is open on Sundays from 10-2. There is plenty of parking on the streets that surround the market, or in the park across the street. It's a "Producer Focused" market, meaning that the vendors are expected to "grow, raise, produce, or create their products themselves, or they will provide unique products that represent other local farmers". There was live music on site which was a nice addition to the vendor booths that offered local vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood, dairy, eggs, grains, nuts, flowers, wine, herbs, crafts, clothing, and specialty products. We saw one food truck on site, from the Wicked Whisk.

We were hanging out in town and visited this farmer's market on a Sunday. They had a good variety…read moreof vendors and organizations set up. We stopped by an art booth which provided kids the opportunity to make a cool craft. It was a bird feeder using a cake cone and a string of Cheerios on a pipe cleaner to act as the holder. This was a very creative idea! The gal running the booth was great and she gave our little friend a bag of bird seed to place inside once we returned home. I also stopped by the Creme Bru.LA booth because I freaking love crème brûlée. I sampled 3/4 flavors: maple, earl grey, and sweet corn. All so tasty! We ended up getting one of each and enjoyed them on this warm day at the picnic tables under a tent. I think this is a unique business idea and wish them well. Check them out on IG: cremebru.la.
