I didn't realize this was a chain, but I've been to the Saravanaa Bhavan in the bay area and recognized the name. Come here if you're looking for an authentic Indian spot that doesn't hold back on the spice! This restaurant is a block or two from the Frankfurt Main train station, which makes it a convenient stop for folks transiting through Frankfurt like we were. We came for lunch Thursday afternoon around 3 pm, and to my surprise there were more folks eating than I expected to see given the late lunch time. The menu has a lot of options... the other location I went to focused on South Indian dishes like dosas and uttapam, but here in addition to South Indian dishes, they offer a huge selection of curries and rice dishes as well as Indo-Chinese dishes. Please note that this is a veg restaurant; there's no meat on the menu. My friend and I split the chappathi ($7.25) and the onion rava masala dosa ($10.50). The chappathi was good and came with two curries, a potato curry and an aloo matar (cauliflower pea) curry. Both curries were good, but the aloo matar curry was super flavorful and my favorite of the two. The rava dosa was really good too. It was crispy and had a good amount of onion filling. However, the sambar it came with was super spicy, the spiciest sambar I've ever had. I couldn't eat it at all sadly. It also came with different chutneys than what I'm used to, but the ones they had were okay. My favorite was the coconut chutney, and I'm not sure what the other (yellow) one was. The food was fine, but the service was super lacking. All of the servers weren't very helpful and sometimes even was a bit rude. If tipping was common here, I would give very little to no tip for the service we experienced. read more

We'd been to the NYC location, and my boyfriend's been to this location several times as well as a few other global locations. Savana Bahn is the largest vegetarian Indian chain in the world, and everywhere we've been it's been good. We did the North Indian thali and South Indian thali, both of which came out with a ton of food. Thalis give you a bit of everything, and everything tasted homemade and fresh and we were so incredibly full by the time we were done. Service was fast. So I stopped in here last Friday and was so disappointed. It was like night and day from my first time here. I had actually planned on going to another restaurant but when I walked by I heard the food calling me. First off, it took them about fifteen minutes to take my order, when I got there I was only one of three tables. When the waitress came to take my order, she didn't say a word to me just stood sideways with her tablet up to her face. I then placed my food order and she walked away before I could tell her what I wanted to drink. It took another 10 minutes before I could tell her my drink order and that was as she was walking by so I wasn't sure if she heard me. It didn't take long before I got a beverage, but it wasn't the one I ordered. To be fair, when I told another waitress that it was the wrong beverage they made good and brought me the correct one. So I sat there and sat there, watched a lot more people come in after me and receive their food, I never did. Not once did my waitress come by to let me know if my food was still coming or not. So after nearly an hour I got up and payed for my beverage and left. The manager who took my money for the beverage told me it takes a half hour to get food there. I was to tired and hungry to tell him I had been there before and didn't have the same problem and that I had been there almost an hour. Will I go back again? Maybe, because the food the first time was good, but it will be a looooong time from now that I go back. I value good customer service. read more

This is worldwide South Indian Vegetarian chain restaurant. Although they specialize in South Indian food, they also have north Indian food (i.e. curries) most commonly associated with Indian cuisine. I got the paneer makhani. It was the first dish I've had in Germany that was actually spicy! In a good way! Tasted very authentic and more like home cooked food versus the cream laden, belly busting curries often served in restaurants. I like meat and this being a vegetarian establishment definitely is a big knock against it. That being said, I would not hesitate to return if in the company of a vegetarian. read more

This place is a very famous chain of vegetarian South Indian restaurants around the world and I was so glad to find one here in Frankfurt. They used to be one of the best names in India when I was growing up. Unfortunately this place gives them a bad name. The menu is huge with tons of classical South Indian street food so popular all over India. Classics like dosa, idli, vada and so on. The service is pleasant and quick. The prices are also reasonable for the portions you get. Unfortunately the food lacks any seasoning or flavour and it was bland food totally unlike the food you get in an average South Indian restaurant. It was under seasoned and lacked any of the punchy, pungent flavours I love about South Indian cuisine. I had a masala dosa which was lacking flavour and the filling was bland. The parotta was dry and lacked the flavour and the curries it came with were nothing to talk about. It's a shame as they are two things I love and was so looking forward to a nice meal. I will give it one more try but will think twice before I do. It's not what I would call good authentic South Indian food. read more

I will start with saying that this is not the best Indian I've ever had. It is, in fact, a global chain. BUT- for a vegetarian restaurant, I highly, highly recommend it. I have spent a great portion of my life as a pescatarian. Only this year did I really start indulging in meat heavily (places I travel to often leave me little choice). But, sometimes, I crave a good, hearty vegetarian meal. I could have ordered anything off of their extensive menu, but to see how the place measured up to other places, I went boring and ordered my usual channa masala. This was a good indicator of whether I'd like the place or not. Channa masala is a northern Indian dish, Punjabi more or less, and Saravanaa Bhavan is a restaurant that specializes in southern Indian cuisine. I wasn't sure how this would pan out.... Well, Saravanaa Bhavan stayed true to its roots and created the channa masala with a coconut milk sauce. I was pleasantly surprised. I never imagined such could work, but it did. And it was delicious. My only complaint about the place was there was a little kid screaming and running around ridiculously undisciplined the entire time. The staff wasn't wanting to be rude (naturally), so they didn't say anything. And the mother seemed to find it funny. Once they left the restaurant, all was well and I was enjoying my meal again. I honestly have no idea how anyone could rate this restaurant anything but "excellent". An Indian friend from church recommended it to us, and we were absolutely enthralled with it. I can only say that this is some of the best Indian food I have ever had. Ever! Get up and go here right away! It seems to be a best-kept secret of Frankfurt...except to the many Indians who obviously love eating there. The cleintele appears to be mostly Indian. Probably the best South Indian restaurant in Germany. Authentic and full of variety. For the very first time I tried mix vegetable parotha.. Pretty interesting, and spicy. ;) Without Raita (joghurt) I'm pretty sure that my stomach would burn. :) Food was tasty with well mannered service. The restaurant is easy to find, located barely a few steps from the main train station. Once inside, you will discover that they have two seating areas - a regular area without any air conditioning and another enclosed inner area with bigger tables and air conditioning. The inner area also seems to be reserved mostly for business dinners as there were plenty of loud people in suits yelling discussing their latest travels. The service is quick as long as you know what you want to get. I was able to get the wait staff to recommend some dishes to me, but they concluded that everything is awesome so it's a tough call. I went with the more traditional South Indian dishes of sambhar-wada and a rawa masala dosa. The sambhar was spicy hot, although lacked the more delicate flavors you would find in a traditional South Indian kitchen. The chutneys, similarly, did not impress very much, and almost seemed watered down. The dosa was plentiful and full of potato goodness! The menu has almost every kind of vegetarian food you would find in India - from North Indian delicacies to 'Indianized' Chinese dishes. Not your typical Indian restaurant - at least not the British influenced type (with lots of curries and kormas). This is real South Indian fare. Dosa (rice-lentil Crepes) and idly, vada (rice-lentil cakes) were good and so were the chutneys. Sambar is now the original saravana bhavan sambar from chennai, India ( though not exactly the same). Better than my first time. The people working there are friendly - however they don't seem to know the real details of saravana bhavan food that we in south India have come to expect. Been there a couple of time. Always a bit crowdy. But this restaurant gives similar feel of any typical restaurant in india. The typical south indian dishes are well prepared. Never tried north indian food here, although it is there on the menu. My favorite here is kaima idly and kara dosa. Both a bit spicy, but still worth trying. Saravana Bhavan has been known for serving authentic south Indian food since quite some time, so once it came to Frankfurt - it was obvious for us to try it out. I have eaten at the Frankfurt outlet quite a few times now, and I can claim to give a fair review of the place. First off, the place is located in the seedy part of town - right next to the red light area. Being situated right next to a sex-shop doesn't sound so appealing, does it? But that still isn't much of a negative. The place also happens to be extremely cramped, and seems to have tried to fit in a maximum number of tables at no thought spared for customer comfort. The food and varieties available are quite extensive. Some of the dishes like uttapams require a long wait. The masala dosas and idli dishes are definitely good. The hot drinks, however, like coffee and tea, are absolutely abysmal. A supposedly authentic south Indian eatery which cannot brew a good enough filter coffee is worthless, IMO. And here is where we get to the worst part of it all - the service. The waiters at this place seem to rotate once every month or so. I have rarely seen the same face twice. And why not? I have had to undergo the terrible service at this place quite a few times. One time, while eating, I overheard a waiter remarking to another "Jaisa des, vaisa bhes. Yahan aake bhi haath se khaa rahe hain" (Translation: Even after coming to a foreign country, these people are eating with their hands). I would love to know how this supposedly high class waiter prefers to eat masala dosas and uthappams. If this coconut is so grossed out by the Indian way of eating, maybe he shouldn't even be serving at an Indian place. The second incident - this time another server while taking the dishes away from our table, drops the bowl of sambhar all over my clothes and bag. He then comes with a bunch of tissues to try to wipe them clean (unsuccessfully, of course). I had to go personally to the bathroom to try to correct this buffoon's clumsiness. In all my experiences, I have generally always seen the establishment comp some/all of the bill in cases like this. But the server was absolutely remorseless and right after leaving us smelling of sambhar comes with the bill and a sheepish smile. In short - Avoid like the plague. The service is the worst I have ever seen, with what seems like waiters with absolutely no prior experience or interest in customers. Even the good food is not enough incentive to survive this. read more

The Saravanaa Bhavan brand is famous in South India, and they've tried to export that experience as authentically as possible. If you know your way around a mid-scale South Indian restaurant--the same as you'd find in many Indian cities or the Bay Area or Houston or various other cities in the world--then you know what to expect, and that's exactly what you'll get here. Everything from the menu to the decor to the demeanor of the waitstaff to the cleanliness of the table and menu to...it's all exactly the same. Which, especially in terms of food, if that's what you're looking for (as I was, on this instance), is perfect. The location (just about three blocks from the Hbf) is also a plus for tourists. read more
