Definitely a solid food truck if your looking for soul food without rice. I had the jerk chicken philly extra spicy and it was pretty good! It didn't rock my world but I really enjoyed the flavors, although if this was extra spicy I probably would have been disappointed with a regular one. The hoagie was actually really good - nice and soft, perfect to soak up all the juices. The veggies weren't overcooked so they still had some bite which was really nice. The fries were alright, nothing special. I ordered them seasoned with a bit of Cajun seasoning which is tasty. It's a lot of food so next time I think I'll go with the jerk chicken tortilla or try the shrimp and grits. The prices were in line with other food trucks, although I think food trucks are overpriced especially the sides. If you're that hungry skip the $3 fries and just get a jerk chicken tortilla for $4. I would try them again next time they're at my workplace, but will skip the fries and order either the jerk chicken tortilla or shrimp and grits! read more

I hate to write one-star reviews, but when it comes to integrity and accountability, Sarge's really needs to step up his game. This review is more a 0.5 star review. I had been working with JW for several months before a company picnic on Saturday October 10, and he was very responsive, confirmed our event multiple times, and easy to do business with. However, within 48 hours before the event, he called and left a sketchy voicemail saying he had an emergency and needed to cancel. On my way home from work that night, I heard on the radio that Sarge's was at Traditions event in Wake Forest. Basically, he double-booked himself with the intentions of likely choosing the more profitable one at the last minute. This really threw a wrench in our plans because we were counting on him and 2 other trucks to serve 400+ people at our event, and we couldn't have done that with just 2 trucks. Event planning takes SO much work to get all the moving parts together & on the same page, and this really screwed us over. Sure, Sarge's may have good food, but PR and customer service come first.... there are SO many other trucks in the area with great food and good service, so I hope you'll take this into consideration before doing business with Sarge's. read more

Past Wednesday (Mar-15) Big Boss held an early St Patrick's Day shindig and had a mini food truck rodeo, among them I spotted a brand new truck. It is not just a budding truck in the food truck scene, the truck itself is literally brand new, with a shiny coat of paint. Sarge was very welcoming chatty with me that afternoon, but didn't offer much on the menu yet. Shrimp and Grits, also Jerk Chicken on Pita was all you were getting, but I did get a taste. I've got to stop and sing the praises of such an awesome experience. Sarges is awesome. I'm not a food truck guy but this one got me. My coworkers were raving about a food truck parked out front. Out of curiosity I went out to see what the hype was all about. First off I must say the prices are awesome! I tried the Turkey Burger and was very pleased. The meat was amazing and the fries that accompanied the sandwich were full of flavor. It took about 5 minutes for the plate that I ordered to be created. Gotta say- I love me some food trucks. So, when my husband mentioned Sarge's was at Rebus last weekend, we hopped in the car and headed over for a taste. We were happy to meet the very nice couple who run the truck and even happier to taste some of the lovely options they have. We ordered the Cheesesteak and Jerk Chicken taco. The cook told me that the cheesesteak would come w/ mayo and mustard, so I said go for it. Why not try it the way the cook thinks is best? While we were waiting, the owner of Rebus also told us about the shrimp and grits and when I mentioned I wish I had seen that on the menu, the cook came up and gave me a good sized sample in a cup. Yum- I'd definitely order this though the grits are a little runnier than I'm used to. When our food was ready, we took it inside Rebus because it was chilly out. There is a neat booth bench and table just for that purpose. We enjoyed both selections- though I was expecting the cheese steak to be 'shaved', but it was actually like a pounded out piece of steak- all in one slice. W/ the mayo, mustard, and onions, all on a nice little bun, I thought it was super tasty. After we ate, my husband snuck out while I checked out Rebus' current artwork. He came back w/ a slice of Pecan pie from Sarges that was absolutely delicious- and it was only $1! What a nice way to end a cool meal. read more

Been wanting to try Sarge's for a while, and found it at the June Food Truck Rodeo. I got the jerk chicken tortilla, and I was definitely impressed. The flavor was amazing. I'm no connoisseur of Caribbean food (no claims of authenticity here) but it tasted great - the chicken was tender and spicy and the sweet sauce (pineapple or mango?) that went on top added a lot of flavor. It was $4, which I thought was quite reasonable, especially given that it was larger than the standard food truck taco. The lady taking the orders was nice, even given the food truck rodeo crowds. The Jerk Chicken Tortilla was pretty darn good -- and I've had real Jamaican jerk seasoning -- but was small for the price. The Shrimp Bacon grits (for lunch, I know how crazy is that) was a bit goopy but good to the last spoonful. Fries ... meh. I should skipped that. Some colleagues were turned off by the Philly Cheese Sandwich with mayo and mustard in it. Probably an inspired idea, but without any warning, risky choice. I really hate to leave negative reviews. Like, I hate it. But guess what, this was a bad experience. So I was tired and hungry and on my way to class, and decided to stop here for lunch. I saw that they had a special for chicken tenders and fries for 7 dollars. Previously, their deal had been a cheeseburger and fries for 5 dollars, and my friends loved it. So I thought they must have upped the prices for the holidays. When I got my food, I was shocked to see that there was only two tiny chicken tenders and a handful of fries. For SEVEN DOLLARS I expect a bit more than that. Cookout has more food for a cheaper price, AND they give you a dipping sauce, which Sarge's does not. The only saving grace and the reason that I didn't give it one star was that the food tasted fine, despite the chicken tenders having no crunch on the outside at all. Never thought I'd pay $8 for shrimp and grits. From a truck. And then come back for more. $24 later, everyone was well-fed and satisfied. The size and portion of the shrimp lets you know that they know you don't want to pay $8 for a plain bowl of piping hot grits. They even put bacon in it! Bacon! Whenever I see this truck driving down Capital Blvd. I reckon they're headed to Big Boss. Next time I'll follow. Was at Clouds For Oktoberfest. Sarge's was there serving brats and pretzels. It was probably the top 3 best bratwurst I've EVER had. So good. I've never had Sarge's for their signature food, but based on this experience, I would be very interested to try! read more

WOW, had Sarge's tonight for the first time while having a beer at Big Boss and I have to say, that was the BEST shrimp po' boy I have ever had. Period. Split it with my mom and we decided we had to go back to try more. We each got the jerk chicken tortilla, and again I was blown away, best jerk chicken I have ever had! My first experience with this truck I bought a turkey burger. I waited over 20 minutes for this burger, which the patty itself fell into broken pieces in the over sized bun. 2nd, I waited in line for 25 minutes when I had a 30 minute lunch break. I intended to get something else but since my break was close to over I asked if their side salads are pre made, so I got that. 3rd, and the kicker. I work in a office building. This truck comes once a week where I work. Because of my prior experience with the long waits, I went outside when my lunch break first started to order. I work at a call center so I get specific breaks and amount of time I can leave my desk. I had to go to the bathroom for the last 2 hours so after I ordered I informed the woman who took my order I will be right back. Wen I returned the line grew, other names are being called but not mine. I told the lady next to me I ordered 20 minutes ago and she said maybe she called my name earlier. S when I asked the woman decided to tell me very loudly, in front of my coworkers to come back after I placed my order... Which I did, she made eye contact with me at least 10 times and didn't say a word while I was standing there for 10 minutes. She felt the need to embarrass me for some odd reason. Needless to say. Never will eat there again or give a penny of my money to them. It's called customer service? Ever heard of it? You be NICE to the customers who are paying you, don't give slack food, and it doesn't take 25 minutes to cook a burger, EVER. I worked at onlyburger for 2 years it takes 8 minutes top. Sarge's has the best shrimp and grits! I've said that from the start... But, since I'm originally from Michigan, I didn't really feel like my opinion held much weight. So I go out of my way to try shrimp and grits now. On a recent trip to Charleston, SC, I asked a few locals where the best shrimp and grits were. I don't want to name the names of the places, but their Zagat ratings were 'Excellent' and 'Extraordinary'. Both of them had great shrimp and grits...but not as good as Sarge's. read more

We first discovered Sarge's Chef on Wheels outside of Fullsteam in Durham. After trying their crab quiche, we were hooked! The food (especially the shrimp and grits) is always top-notch. Additionally, Julius and Janet are two of the friendliest people you will meet - we are always greeted with an enthusiastic wave and a smile. They are at the top of our list to visit during the local food truck rodeos; I think we've been there every rodeo for the last few years.
