Wow. I think I have found the perfect taco place! Seriously, these may be the best tacos I have ever had. Had to carnitas tacos and a gringas. So good! It is two food trucks in a gas station parking lot. We saw one family pull up, unload a table and chairs and make a night of it. There is a big parking lot next door, so you could definitely do that to make sure you had a place to eat if the picnic tables are full. Service is fast- but this isn't fast food. Gym Tacos was one of the first spots I went to when I moved to Raleigh. Since then, I've probably been back for every month or two. I've made my way around the menu, and of course the tacos are great, but my favorites are the gringas (loaded small-ish quesadillas with a smoky sauce and pork al pastor) and the torta (the bread is so good, I usually go with asada). If you're getting tacos, try the suadero (cubed beef brisket), al pastor or chorizo. Make sure to order 4+ so you get all the fixins. Located off to the side in a Valero parking lot, it's hard to miss the Gym Tacos with its bright orange food truck. When we stepped out the car, we were immediately greeted by a classic Ludacris song followed by more early 2000s R&B music blasting from their speaker - I was immediately digging the vibes here! We came by on a Monday afternoon and they were relatively busy! We ordered a carne asada burrito ($10), 2 lengua tacos ($3 each), 2 pastor tacos ($2.50 each), and 2 cabeza tacos ($3 each). We didn't see drinks on their menu so we walked over to the Valero storefront to pick up soda instead, which was quite convenient. The service was quick and friendly! We waited about 10-15 minutes for the food. As someone born and raised in San Diego, CA, I've had my fair share of really good to mediocre Mexican food. A good indicator of a place that serves great tacos is their sauces and the color of the sauces. The moment I saw the array of bottles with different sauces, I knew Gym Tacos was legit. The ones that caught my attention were the cilantro-lime green and the creamy orange as they reminded me of a fantastic Mexican food place in San Diego that serves similar ones. It's safe to say my pre-judgments were right! Everything was great!! The cabeza and pastor tacos were good, but the lengua tacos were even better! The lengua tacos were soft, rich, and juicy. The carne asada burrito was super solid as the meat was seasoned well and the rest of the ingredients complemented each other well. My only gripe is that I wish the tortillas were on the stove a few moments longer to give it a slightly less raw flour-y taste and a tad less soft. Stopped here on the way from North Hills just to grab something different. The menu was overwhelming because it was hard to express to the staff what I wanted to order. I ordered the gym taco, el pastor, and beef taco to go from your truck on my way to Fayetteville and I am so glad that I did. I decided to try the gym taco which came with shrimp topped with an avocado salsa that was cold, but spicy and just amazing! I decided to save the other two tacos for home and warmed them up. Oh wow! Even warmed and reheated they were delicious! I paired it with a little bit of red wine and you mix of salsas that just hit the spot. I plan to finish the rest of your salsas with some chips! I love the tacos here, I come at least once per month to the taco truck on wake forest, but recently they have been slacking...my last order that got completely wrong but fixed it after giving me the run around. I came back again because everyone makes mistakes (even though they blamed me)(which wasn't at all my fault) today and was informed that they are no longer allowed to give more than 2 sauces per box!!! I order 5+ tacos in each box so how is someone who get 1 tacos in their box get the same amount of sauce as someone who get 4 or more!!! It was a busy spot in the Valero gas station for tacos. There are more parking in the back if you get overwhelmed with how many cars are on the small gas station lot. This place was taking phone orders and in person orders at the same time. It was a notably very busy dinner time. If you see more than handful of people standing around, expect a bit of wait. I've also noticed that few of their menu increased in price by $0.50. And the vendor only takes cash as payment. Something to note before you head on over. The gym tacos were fine but could have done better with more flavor in the sauce. The carnitas meat was quite salty yet still tasty. Also taking into account that I didn't get to open my tacos till 30-minute later, the asada meat were really dry. A small unassuming building with counter service, four top tables inside and picnic tables outside. The menu has many options including tacos, tostadas, and burritos with a variety of proteins. I think this may become one of our favorite quick dinner taco places in Raleigh. The food here is fresh and delicious. The service was also quick even though they were slammed last Friday when we went. The place was well staffed with servers, bar tenders and kitchen staff, which is good to see. We had two teenagers with us and they wanted the Tower Nachos. They bring it to the table in a metal cylinder, which is on a plate. They remove it and the chips remain plied high with queso, beans, pico de gallo , lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and peppers. The nachos didn't stand a chance; they devoured them like two vacuum cleaners. I was able to sample a small plate. Again, the ingredients were fresh and the chips were not overly salty which I prefer. I went with the surf and turf burrito. The burrito was stuffed with marinated flank steak, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese, refried beans, spring mix and lettuce. It was awesome and filling. The teens went with a steak and chicken quesadilla. Again, the dishes were devoured. My burrito was really tasty and all of the ingredients went well together. My wife went with the steak and chorizo tacos, which she enjoyed very much. I forgot to mention that I had their Top Shelf Margarita. What was great about it that it wasn't sugary at all. I know many places use a margarita mix which can be overly tangy and sweet which is a turn off for me. This one had a really nice balance and taste to it. You could actually taste the tequila in this one. Its a little pricy at $14 but, I'm a "one and done guy" nowadays. I give this place a 4.25 in terms of stars. This place suits the bill for a quick dinner where the food is tasty, its moderately priced and the venue is clean and bright. Definitely check them out. read more

I'm super sad to be writing this review update. This was once our favorite taco spot & ate here 2x a week. In the past several months Every time we have visited we have been disappointed. Why?: Quality: During our last several visits, their meat (mainly chicken) has been lacking flavor. I have had to add my own salt. My boyfriend agrees that the flavor isn't what it used to be. They have been out of shrimp and lengua for over a month (used to love the gym taco). The sauces are inconsistent and are either extremely spicy and flavorful OR lacking flavor. Also, the self serve sauce station feels gross considering we're still in a pandemic and their containers are touched by every single person who orders. Now that I said it out loud, ewww. Quantity:The amount of meat has been cut in half but prices increased. I agree that their prices deserved a bump initially, but now the value is not there. Service: They are ALWAYS late. You will wait 30-60 mins past their scheduled open time because they are late and then you will wait in a long line to order. As they set up, there is no urgency and the staff is socializing, smoking & drinking energy drinks at their leisure. Waiting in the summer heat for an hour, in a gross/smelly gas station parking-lot is enough to make you lose your appetite. If the quality was still great, I wouldn't complain... but it's not. I really hope that my next review will be more positive, but I don't think I will be returning for awhile. read more

The Surf n Turf burrito had carne asada and shrimp. It was the size of a baby chihuahua! It was very filling and a good price of $15. The taste was good. A small wood sign in the shape of NC lists the meats/proteins available on the menu and order up! Tacos are $2.50 and quesadillas at $10 but I had to guess based upon some customers in front of me, prices would be nice on the menu. Service is pretty quick, they work really hard in that truck and I got some barbacoa tacos in double-wrapped tortillas. A couple of squeeze dispensers offer up some hot sauce choices and its time to eat! The meat in the tacos are well-seasoned and plentiful. Overall a good option for tacos except for one small thing. Chido Taco has opened up right down the road and offers up tacos at the same price but with seating and a dining room. Moving from California, I was hesitant to try Mexican food in Raleigh. I wanted to leave my perfect perception of it untarnished and avoided it for months. When the craving eventually hit, I tried somewhere else and, as expected, was disappointed. But I did not give up hope! Yelp told me that Gym Tacos might be what I was looking for and I put it on my list. When I was in the area one day, I gave it a shot and boy am I glad I did. These tacos are incredible. As is the burrito. I ordered a chicken, carnitas, and pastor taco. The pastor was easily the best, perfectly complimented by little strips of pineapple, but they were all good. They have four different self-serve sauces on the side which, if I'm being honest, is not the most COVID friendly since you have to dig through all the sauce cups yourself, grab and squeeze the bottle yourself, then cap your sauce cup with a lid that was likely touched by someone else. But they taste good... The creamier looking green sauce was our favorite - perhaps it was a sort of avocado crema but I can't be sure. They all have varying levels of spice and are worth a try. My husband got the asada burrito and it was amazing. Dare I say better than the tacos? The cheese and flavors all melded together into the perfect mixing pot of burrito goodness. Knowing that tacos are not the only thing good here makes me crave coming back here to try the rest of the menu. I will definitely be back here ASAP. We stopped by there on 5/18/23, the ordering process was honestly not the best. They didn't have certain proteins which I wish they had noted that on the menu like other food trucks. My husband ordered tacos of asada, pastor, and carnitas. I ordered sopes of asada and suadero. And we both shared a shrimp quesadilla. Not gonna lie the food was pretty mediocre for such a hyped food truck in the Raleigh area, and quite overpriced as well. Anyways the reason why I'm giving it a one star rating is because I'm pretty sure my husband got food poising from eating the pastor taco because 1.) he didn't even eat the carnitas one (lack of flavor) and 2.) we both had the asada protein and 3.) we both ate the shrimp quesadilla and I was perfectly fine all weekend. Gym Tacos has the best tacos in Raleigh! And I don't say that lightly since there is some intense competition nearby (El Rey del Taco, bartaco, Chido Taco) but Gym Taco wins out! Also impressive since they are located as a truck in the Valero gas station off Six Forks Road. I'm in biking distance off the greenway so I usually come here every 2 weeks or so for a meal. I haven't had anything other than the tacos but all of the ones that I've tried have been amazing, especially the "Gym Taco" which is a shrimp taco! They have different toppings that they put on each type of taco. I'm sure you could specify but there really isn't a need to since the toppings go great with the type of meat you order (note that there are sometimes additional toppings that are hidden at the bottom of the to-go boxes under the lime slices like onions!) It's cash only so be prepared for that, and if you go during a normal lunch/dinner hour, be prepared for a potentially long line/wait (though they work pretty fast to get your order out) I will note that there are sauces in bottles in front of the truck that are self-serve so depending on how cautious you are with COVID and shared surfaces, you may or may not want to partake in that. Honey, this place did not disappoint. I'm from Charlotte and visited Raleigh for one night. I tried Gym Tacos and picked this over the other places nearby. (Best decision) It was 100% worth it. The tortilla was authentic and their chicken tasted so fresh! The vegetables and love that the chef puts in the food is immaculate!
