After decades regularly coming to Saugatuck, somehow we'd never made it to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. It was not from a lack of want, but rather a combo of few different roadblocks: having other things going on when we were in town or not having programming that we were interested in when we were there or just not having anything scheduled at that time full stop. But we finally made it here for a bit this summer and it was as great as expected. First off, I still have not seen a show here, which is a great failing of ours, but we did explore the grounds and the building. It was a Friday afternoon and we were able to enjoy the farmer's and artisan's market going on in the parking lot. It's not a huge market but they do have multiple vendors covering the things you'd go look for--fresh fruits and veggies, eggs, honey and jams, etc. We had a great time checking out the stalls and vendors all nestled in between the beautiful blooming gardens around the building. Afterwards, we head inside the building to check it out. There wasn't much activity but we were lucky enough to see a few artists' gallery showcases which were moving and really engaging. It was an inspiring visit and we've made it our pledge to make sure we get to some performance there this year. I can't wait to see a show there!

It was quiet and we couldn't hear anyone in neighboring rooms. The bed was comfy and the room was clean. We had a standard king room on the second floor. Check-in was easy and our front door overlooked the pool. I don't think the pool was open when we were there because it was still chilly outside. It was a great experience, but frankly it was just a bummer that it felt like the entire space was geared towards gay men rather than queer PEOPLE as a whole. As a queer woman, I just wish it had felt like I was represented too, but it's okay cause not every space is for me! I also don't know if it's the norm, but the bar was pretty empty for a Saturday night which just didn't give the vibe for dancing I was hoping for. All the staff were so kind and helpful. Would totally stay here again if needed/staying in the area and would recommend to someone who is curious! I don't think I'd seek it out independently just because I live in Grand Rapids and it's only about 45 minutes away and again, feels like the vibe is more focused on men.

This policy might be more justifiable if the establishment offered structured guest events or actively engaged with local community activities. Currently, their approach to entertainment appears limited to providing a DJ for amplified music. Regarding accommodations, our king room was generally acceptable. However, housekeeping services were minimal, primarily consisting of bed-making and towel replacement. The bathroom, including the sink, toilet, shower, and floor, remained uncleaned throughout our stay. The carpet exhibited noticeable wear and dirt, and was not vacuumed during our visit. Overall, the establishment appeared to be understaffed, with the exception of the bar personnel. There is a clear need for additional wait staff, front desk personnel, pool attendants, and groundskeepers. The only consistently maintained aspect of the grounds seemed to be the lawn. Professional groundskeeping expertise is urgently required, as the bushes, ornamental grasses, trees, and planted areas are overgrown and heavily weeded. Regrettably, it appears The Dunes Resort's primary focus is financial gain, with a discernible lack of reinvestment in the property over an extended period. This is a concerning observation.

It always amazes me that gems like the Waterfront Film Festival exist to the silence of the masses…read more You must come to this festival. In its 11th year, if you've always wanted to attend Sundance or Cannes but can't get to Park City or France - then this is the next best thing, without the papparazzi and hype, but with all the heart and authentic, genuine, real love of the arts. SAG Indie ranks this one of the top 5 in the world, and it's easy to see why. Yes, it's small town, and yes, the productions are missing the glitz and glam, but this is Rothbury meets Hollywood. It's outside, in a beautiful and idyllic small town (voted one of the top gay destinations in the Midwest). You can dine with the stars, meet the Directors and Cast, and still find a hotel room and a spot at the local breakfast diner - no hassles. You will see films here that debut in NY and LA later in the year. Great films that may never even make their distribution paths to the Midwest. It's a (Michigan) treasure. Support it. Go to the beach. Wear your Merrells (or Chacos). Take a deep breath as you circle the town looking for a great parking spot (for 5 minutes) and thank the good Lord you really don't live in LA.

It attracts directors, producers, actors and movie mavens from New York and California to this laid-back summer resort village. But you don't have to be a Tinseltown temptress to enjoy the show. This reporter caught up with festival co-founder Hopwood Depree while he was in Hollywood. When asked about the festival's success he said, "People can relax on the beach and eat at one of the fabulous restaurants during the day. At night, everyone comes together to watch these amazing films shown in unusual spaces like boat sheds." Netflix can never duplicate that collective experience, sitting together in the dark and watching a film projected on a big screen. Get the $200 SuperPass and you'll have priority seating for all of the films and seminars.
