Shotty workmanship. Not up to code. Took off with our materials. We hired Chuck Lee to tear down…read moreexisting and build a second story deck and stairs. He quoted a price which was on the high end of estimates, but we ultimately decided to go with this company due to their ability to start right away. The project was a bust from the beginning. Mr Chuck Lee quoted a price for the materials (wood) of 4k. After receiving the estimate and rather than writing a stranger a check for 4k, we agreed to meet at and write a check for the materials directly to the supply company. We were surprised when it was only 3k ($1000.00 less) but Mr. Lee did not take that amount off of the original estimate. Code: One of my main concerns was a builder who knew the code for our county. Mr. Lee stated that he was also an inspector so I could be certain it would be done correctly. It was not. The pickets were 1.5 inches too wide throughout. About a third of the wood used from Maners Building supply (where he recommended and met us) was either warped, badly split, or both. When I complained I was told that's just how it is with wood! One of the main support beams was split terribly. They "fixed" it with wood glue (which is an awful eye sore). Many of the decking boards were too short to use but they did anyway by angling the screws into the support beam ~on the top story deck (boards aren't laying on the support like the others and are "secured" with bent screws) ~They tore the flashing off of the house and threw it in the yard. It was never replaced and there's a large gap now between the deck and the house. They didn't secure 4 of the posts with concrete at all. Workmanship: I was specific about how I wanted the stairs, but they ignored me. The landing was built much too high, and the stairs ended in the opposite direction as how I had asked. Secondly, I asked them to leave caps on the end of the posts because I had purchased lights to go on them. They did not do that and placed warped wood on for the railings. They were supposed to clean up after themselves and they did not. They left ALL of the pieces of cut wood all over my yard as well as their nails and stickers. Literally no clean up as agreed upon. They also took several of our large decking boards which we had purchased separately for another project in the front yard. They used our bags of concrete from the garage. I don't know what they used it for because I had to purchase more just to set the posts myself. According to the new contractor it's going to cost me over 3k to bring my new deck up to code. I'm still stuck with clean-up, unsightly warped & split wood throughout, but at least it'll be safe. Note: I gave 2 stars for the 2 workers who came back out to try to fix the code issues. Mr. Lee asked to be paid before the job was complete so he could "pay his workers" which ignorantly I agreed. I guess you all know the rest after that: more shotty workmanship and he was not seen again.
