We were lucky to secure tickets to see Paddington and I did so without knowing much of the theater itself. We splurged for the box lunch and honestly it was the only way to get the marmalade sandwich so you kind of have to. Getting in and to the stalls was easy. There wasn't a long queue for drinks or merchandise which made perusing so much easier. The theater allows you to take your drink to your seat. The glass cup with the box was a bit much to carry and there is a bit of a weird ledge you can rest your feet on, however that does complicate the shuffle a bit. All that said, in terms of musicals, Paddington is a winner and I would recommend the show to anyone. The amount of planning that went into the production was well worth it. If you can find seats in the first 5-7 rows prepare to be immersed in the most magical way possible. read more

I wanted to see the hottest show while we visited London and we did! Managed 3 seats all separately but we did get to see the show which was enjoyable. The stage was gorgeously dressed, show well acted. The aesthetics however, were a little bit of a let down. Seats were smallish, not a lot of room space. Drinks and snack offerings at the theatre were a bit disappointing. Popcorn was eh. Bathrooms small. They were out of playbills for the play which was very disappointing. The line to the store after the show was so long I wasn't able to get a souvineer. Be warned that once you scan your tickets you are sort of stuck in the theater portion of the Savoy. I had been looking forward to spending time at the hotel to look at the lobby or eat but after the show, we were let out in the back and it was far away from the hotel entrance. read more

Saw Paddington here so this experience reflects that visit. We got the Paddington box lunch which came with pins, a cup, a marmalade sandwich and a drink. It was well worth the money and very cute. The theatre was perfect for this show. Had no problems getting in or out, but it is small and tight in the stairwells. read more

Went to see Pretty Woman here and the stalls seats were fantastic. The staff were friendly when we arrived and the theatre was fairly clean. I'd recommend the stalls in this theatre as it's just a bit more intimate. The queue to get in doesn't take long and they have adequate amounts of people doing bag checks so you're not stuck outside for long. read more

The Savoy theater is absolutely beautiful. It's a West End theater in the Strand located in the City of Westminster, London, England. The theatre was designed by C. J. Phipps in 1881. The architecture, and the balcony's are amazing. You can see the stage from any seat and the best part the orchestra or the Stalls seating is raised by row so you can see even if a tall person sits in front of you. Saw Pretty Woman tonight and it was good, not great. 4th row orchestra seats were only $45 at the London TKTS booth, so it made it an enjoyable evening. First time here, and I was happy to find this fabulous gem in London. My friend and I saw Dreamgirls, and we were impressed by the show and this theatre. Easy to get to from Gloucester Road by taking the tube to Embankment station and walking a few minutes over. We scored great seats here, and they were comfortable. We were right in the middle and could see everything. I like that the style of seating is stadium style. The seats were placed higher than the seats immediately in front of us so that the occupants of further-back seats have less of their views blocked by those further forward. So much better than the other theatres I've attended. We were impressed by the ceilings in the lobby, and main theater, the regal architectural stylings, the amazing faces and carvings along the walls around the stage, the acoustics, and the staff was friendly too. The fantastic bar also offered a great selection of libations and snacks. Great place to see a show that's for sure! It's a classic in the purest sense. I will definitely be coming back here for future events. read more

Would highly AVOID this place. Jake and Lee are the manager and supervisor here.... They are the WORST. Probably the most horrendous management experience I have ever received from any of my travels..... Savoy Theater is NOT worth the money - this is 100% because of theater management. The ONLY staff person who was absolutely amazing was a woman named Marte -- she greeted us at the door and then got us seated, she was phenomenal. Her colleagues should learn from her! Jake and Lee should get some emotional therapy or something because they obviously have some trauma that inhibits them from providing any level of relatively average customer service. What a truly stunning theatre. First things first - who knew The Savoy had a theatre. Secondly, who knew it had been demolished, reconstructed, burned down and then reconstructed again to highlight its original 1920 Art Deco beauty. My dear boyfriend bought me tickets to see Guys and Dolls and upon hearing we were in the upper circle, I won't lie, I panicked slightly! I've had bad experiences in the past with upper circle seating being the obvious: unable to see, blocked views, slight sickness etc. But I'd needn't be. Our seats were fantastic and we had an amazing view of the whole stage plus with the £1 binoculars (man I love them) I could see every expression on the actors faces! The staff were friendly and polite asking if we were enjoying the show AND you could even access the toilets with ease and without an excessive queue. Happy days! Wonderful theatre and would highly recommend if there's a show on there you're interested in. Plus the show itself was fantastic - if you can go and see it! So, I left with a smile on my face and spring in my step... :D 'You can bet they'll be doing it for some doll...' read more

This theater is fun because it fits a lot of people but is quite tiny compared to other theaters in the area. I can tell that they had to re-stage many components in the current show (Legally Blonde) because of the tiny stage but it didn't hurt the production at all. It was great fun. The staff is nice, the facilities are clean, and the seats aren't too small. I would say that the best seats in this theater are in the grand circle (or the first tier above the floor seats). I found that the location right next to the Savoy Hotel was kinda cool. read more

AVOID SAVOY THEATRE OR BOOKING THROUGH LONDON THEATRE DIRECT!! i made an error booking tickets for the wrong date. I immediately contacted/emailed London theatre Direct to inform them as the cost in total was £720!! I was happy with a change of date if a refund wasn't available due to the dates being so close to booking. LONDON THEATRE DIRECT didn't contact me back until the show date had passed and has refused to help. A visit to the Savoy was made to resolve this (we live in Manchester!!) and we was informed this would be sorted after all the emails was pulled up and it was clear to see LONDON THEATRE DIRECT was informed of the error before the date of the show. we have had no help at all off LONDON THEATRE DIRECT OR THE SAVOY. The Savoy Theatre sits in the middle of The Strand and is currently recognisable by the giant 'NEVER FORGET' poster outside advertising the Take That musical. I'm ashamed to say that this was what drove me to visit The Savoy, I just can't get enough of those 1990's beats. Actually, it was for a friends birthday (if that reinstates any credibility) and we had a great time. The theatre itself is tiny in comparison to the other big musical venues and the one thousand seats are very squashed together. I'm not sure if they have an air conditioning either because throughout the show I could see people creating make shift fans out of their programmes to try and cool themselves down. Despite these issues, the size of the building actually works in the audience's favour because it's easy for everyone to see the stage and feel like they're up close to the action. In the case of 'Never Forget' being up close to the action meant being up close to almost entirely naked men dancing in the rain and singing 'Babe'. Hysterical! read more

A little hidden & misleading with all the "Let It Be" signs to know where the box office is, but it's right beside the entrance to the Savoy Hotel. It was very clean and felt cozy (in a good way). Staff were cheerful. I was in the top tier and could still see everything just fine. Leg room is a bit of an issue up there though. I'm 5'8" and had to sit very unlady like! Thankfully, no one was in front of me. My 6'3" partner wasn't coping well either. Sound system was fine, clean toilets, easy access to the street afterwards. read more

I went down to the Savoy to see Edward Fox in Legal Fictions. It was a great two/three person play which was really funny, althouh at the moment Fiddler on the Roof is playing there and from May to October is the play based on Take That's history - Never Forget. The theatre itself is a nice little one, hidden below the Savoy hotel, with lots of gold gilding and pretty things to look at. The on thign about London is that all of these theatres were built at different times, and if you enjoy the theatre it's nice to see what a collection London has. And yet, I'm sure that some of you out there just really want to go and see the Take That musical!!! read more

Be VERY weary about shows here. Show was schedule for 7:30. Refused admittance to those arrive a second later. We arrived at 7:31 and were refused admittance into building. The party in front of us arrived at 7:30 and 49 seconds. By my count, over a dozen were refused admittance who arrived between 7:30 and 7:34. Over 30 of us were taken to a tiny room with no air flow and watch the entire first act 1/2 the show on a small tv. No airflow in room. There were at least 6 opportunities after majors songs or scene changes where people could be admitted to seats. No effort was made to see where people were sitting and plenty of easy opportunities to get people to seats without impacting the show. If there was a blanket half show refused entry policy for being a second late, that should have been prominently present (Like an announcement of the star of the show will not be performing). The Play itself was well done with a number of strong performances. However, exiting the theatre was a nightmare and should be a cautionary tale to prevent deaths in case of a fire. Bulk of theater exited through alley. But ally passageway was filled and clogged with tables and drinkers from the adjacent pub. Exited also was up large set of stairs which was occupied by a few people sitting on the stairs and partially blocking stairs. Theater should be taking efforts to ensure safe exit ability. If god forbid the was a fire or panic, I would not be surprised to learn of tramplings and deaths. read more

A mid-sized theatre with a postage-stamp footprint, the Savoy Theatre is next door to the Savoy Hotel just off the Strand. It was purpose-built in the 1880s as a theatre -- as opposed to one of the early C20th "grand cinemas" which are now theatres (see the Apollo Victoria, Dominion, and Piccadilly as examples). The Savoy is a three tier theatre seating 1,100, with ornate decoration and painted ceilings from its restoration after the Savoy Fire of 1990 providing for an absolutely beautiful and stylish auditorium. Sightlines throughout the theatre are generally very good indeed -- even from the side of the Upper/Grand Circle the severe rake affords an excellent view, even if perhaps slightly vertiginous, with only minimal occlusion of the top and side of the stage. The minimal footprint I mentioned makes this a very intimate theatre -- entry at street level at Savoy Place actually enters onto the Upper Circle, with the stage actually being right down at Embankment level! However, the revenge of the footprint comes with the tiny bar/foyer areas and the insufficient number of toilets; as a result, ladies in particular will probably want to make a swift exit as the curtain goes down on the intermission to beat the queues! Those minor peccadillos aside -- it's a great theatre in which to see a show. The sightlines are fantastic, and while legroom is cozy I've been in far worse dress circles! read more

Savoy Theatre has that 1920's opulence. But as soon as the curtain falls, it's gone. Everyone's rushing out the side doors which lead to nothingness. It's kinda weird and abrupt. We had to sneak back in to get photos because we thought we would be escorted towards the entrance/exit where all the beauty (and signage) is. But you're really just out the theatre when the show is over.... We saw Dreamgirls featuring Amber Riley from Glee. And, well that was amazing. I always go here around christmas to see the Gilbert and Sulivan they have on. They are always great, with fab costumes and sets. It feels like and old world experience, and as I love the Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, for me it's a perfect night out! read more

5/5 for the production of Dreamgirls but 2/5 for the theater itself. So hot and apparently no AC. REALLY detracted from enjoying the musical. Mics were turned up so loud it distorted the sound to the point of not being able to hear or understand anything. It's a shame too because the cast was so talented, especially the lead. I went to see Never Forget there a few weeks ago and was quite unimpressed with the theatre. For starters if you get there early there's no foyer or bar where you can wait. Instead, there's a tiny, crowded, cold ticket office - if you're one of the lucky few you can stand there in the cold, but if not you're just left to wait outside. The day I went there it was freezing cold and raining. When we finally got in we were immediately directed to our seats. The stadium seating was very much like the cinema except much, much steeper. We were right at the back - not good considering my girlfriend has vertigo. I found that it was a little too far away from the stage and the sound didn't always carry right to the back. The seats were ok, but my bottom was glad when the show ended. For all the negatives though, the theatre wasn't that bad. I won't especially look forward to going back, but it did the job it was meant to well enough and is far from the worst theatre in London. read more

Visited the Savoy theatre last Thursday night for a performance of the new musical Legally Blonde and despite all of my misgivings well it's based on the very successful, very pink Reese Witherspoon chic flick - so rugby playing, beer drinkers are not an obvious target audience for the ticket sellers. But it turned out to be a musical I really enjoyed! I Wish I could say the same for the theatre! The entrance looks a little like a bomb site at present as they are trying to hide the construction works currently underway in the adjoining Savoy Hotel so ignore that. Once inside the doors it feels unusual to proceed downstairs to reach the dress circle as you forget you have entered the building at its apex. The décor is all red and gold with sandy walls and bunches of blue grapes painted here and there. No I didn't understand that either. The only explanation I can think of is that it was done within the spirit of the production in that it was taking the Michael out of itself. However they do push the point a bit too far with a tiny bar area that can just accommodate about a dozen people and toilet facilities (especially, so I'm reliably informed for the girls) that are completely inadequate. It's a shame because the auditorium is really quite nice. The seats are not the best I have seen but have good leg room and excellent views of the stage from virtually all areas of the theatre. The raking looks a little steep especially from the back rows upstairs, so if you are susceptible to nose bleeds stick to the stalls. You need also to think twice if you can't cope with steep steps! There are a lot of them. The Royal? Box (or whatever) fascinated me. It wasn't occupied so I am only surmising that it could be? But if you are tempted to go for the box seats (it has four of them) wear something inconspicuous. I would recommend silver cooking foil, you'll blend in nicely! Alternatively all in pink would look a nice contrast too. Legally Blonde the Musical, I think really works well as a fun night out for two simple reasons. First, in no way shape or form does it take itself at all seriously. In fact the best is made of every opportunity to do the exact opposite. And secondly it uses the very talented Sheridan Smith to not only hold the whole thing together but she milks every ounce of humour out of her character and feeds her supporting company with opportunities galore to shine and entertain. Even the two pooches produce faultless show stopping moments! Great supporting cameos from Jill Halfpenny as the love starved beautician Paulette drooling over her love interest, the hunk with a package delivery man. Aiofe Mulholland shines as the court room defendant Fitness Instructor and alleged husband murderer, Brooke Wyndham. Her sequence in prison with the inmates performing a fitness routine with skipping ropes is sheer genius. In fact Jerry Mitchell's choreography is excellent throughout. I'm not sure who could take up the mantel should Sheridan be unavailable so go and see it quick before she needs a rest! The show starts with its signature tune Omigod You Guys which sets the pace of the show and gets the groups of guides and brownies down the front rows whooping and squealing with glee. Unfortunately that is as good as the music score gets which is a shame because there were some really clever lyrics at times that lit up the show. The storyline follows the film in general but I'm sure not many would worry if it wildly diverged, which it did at times! Does anyone recall the courtroom scenes having the judge sat on a toilet? The stage does all sorts of scenery appearing, twirling and sinking into the floor so there is plenty going on to keep you occupied alongside the action. Be sure though it's just a fun evening that entertains with lots of comic moments worthy of a panto. Ignore the discomforts and shortcomings of the building you'll have a great time just remember to go to the loo before the show starts! read more

This is one theatre with a lot of history. It was one of the first to have electric lights! Anyway, the theatre today still stands proudly and I stepped into it for the first time to see Gypsy - a truly brilliant show. We were seated in the balcony but the view was actually quite brilliant. Possibly because the theatre is more on the small and intimate side so sitting in the balcony wasn't such a big deal. There are a number of steps to climb though if you're sitting in the balcony so do be aware of that. read more

This theatre was opened in 1881 specifically to present the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. It was destroyed by a fire in 1990 and, after being restored to its 1920s Art Deco grandeur, it re-opened three years later. We have seen several productions here, including "Blithe Spirit," and this was the perfect setting for Noël Coward's classic play. The seats are comfortable and the auditorium is small, so sightlines and acoustics are good no matter where you sit. read more

Probably a 3.5. I saw Legally Blonde here. The theater is quite small and intimate. I had a good view but was also in the fifth row of the stalls (usually called the Orchestra in the US). This area is one big pool of seats without a middle aisle, so I'm sure it creates some issues if the folks in the center are late. Acoustics were generally quite good. You have to go downstairs several levels if you are in the stalls (as opposed to going upstairs for the dress circle), which I am not as much a fan of. The seating area also smells a bit musky. But I found the service very accommodating and helpful, and if you're a bit late, they park you on one of the mezzanine floors to watch a grainy TV for a couple of songs before escorting to your seat - but it's nice you get to go to your seat relatively quickly after the show starts. read more

Our group of forty from Arizona saw "Funny Girl" at this lovely venue! Only complaint was the sheer number of stairs to get to the stalls! We asked for assistance from the ushers to get an 87 year old seated! We were given assistance within minutes of making the request! We avoided at least 3/4 of the stairs to our delight! Another treat at London theatres was ushers bringing small containers of ice cream into the theatre for sale... Patrons were buying up the supply quickly! Beautiful, historic theatre! read more

We have been to the Savoy Theatre & every time we are here it is like stepping back to the 1920's and the age of Art Deco. To practicalities, the seating is good and the leg space is generous when compared to other theatres, as such if you are tall then there is not too much to be concerned with. The exterior of the Savoy Theatre is a bit weird. It sits nestled in the right side of the driveway to the Savoy Hotel (which has a number of fancy cars parked on it... last time I was there I saw a Rolls Royce and a Posche... both an awkward ivory beige colour). Around back at the stage door (go down the alley next to Coal Hole pub) there are piles of rubbish next to the stage door gate... quite the juxtaposition. The current show, Legally Blonde, was decent enough. I went with my friend who gave it a better review than me, which she contributed to a ticketing website (http://www.legallyblondetickets.co.uk/). I have said this on some other musical show reviews before, and I will say it again here, I wish they would stop making so many musicals from movies. It is pathetic. At the moment there are at least 7 shows based on movies (Legally Blonde, Shrek, Billy Elliot, Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Ghost, and a few more that I can't think of at the moment). It is the same thing in cinema, there are so many sequel and prequels but barely any completely original screenplays. I digress... The Savoy, a nice intimate theatre, is a good space and I am looking forward to someday going again, I just hope they show something more original next time. read more

If you're looking for a fun night out with lots of delicious fromage (that's cheese for those who don't speak French), then get down to the Savoy to see Legally Blonde - The Musical. Whether you're 16 or 60, you'll enjoy this fun and upbeat romp through the life of sorority girl Elle Woods as she follows her ex boyfriend to Harvard Law School to try and win him back. The show doesn't take itself seriously so expect lots of hilarious dramatic character portrayals (the UPS man is a favourite) and songs like: "Omigod You Guys" and "There! Right There!" which includes the brilliant line: "Is He Gay or Just European?" Sheridan Smith is delightful with a great sense of comic timing. Duncan James still thinks he's in Blue, but he's eye candy nonetheless. I'd say simply that this is a great night out for the girls, but Legally Blonde -The Musical is better than that. The music, the arrangements, the characters, the direction, the sets, the costumes.... Like its main character Elle Woods, you need to look past the sparkle and blonde hair, because this is a serious production that's here to stay! read more

Visited the Savoy theatre last night (Wednesday) for the production Legally Blonde. The theatre, considering its name and location to the rather plush Savoy Hotel, didn't exactly exude the same elegance as one may expect from its neighbour of the same name. However, it was not an unattractive theatre and the internal layout of the auditorium ensured that when seated in the stalls, you had an excellent field of view of the stage. The seating was raised high enough from the seats in front to ensure that your view was not restricted by the head of the person in front of you (so long as you're not unfortunate enough to be seated behind a seven foot giant). Theatre staff were friendly and very helpful and toilets were provided on each level, which is useful as the theatre itself, owing to the number of stairs, appeared to be deep in the bowels of the Savoy Hotel. Seats were comfortable and leg room was adequate. As for the show itself Legally Blonde, well I wasn't expecting too much (chick flicks are not really my cup of tea!!). However, I knew my wife would love it and I was lucky enough to get tickets for free, so I thought what the hell. I suppose I turned up to the performance with the mentality that this was not really the show for me and I wouldn't really enjoy it, to this end I felt that it probably took 20-30 mins of the opening act to win me over. However, once the show got rolling, it was impossible not to get involved. The show was non-stop from start to finish, with a number of excellent routines and song and dance numbers and totally up beat throughout. I must say that the song and dance number Is he gay or is he European in the courtroom was particularly stand out. I lost track of the number of excellent one liners thrown in for comic effect throughout the performance and the way the writers have managed to get an element of transition from US to UK to allow it to be better understood and appreciated by British audiences was excellent. All cast members put in stellar performances, especially Carley Stenson who played the lead Elle Woods, who had to contend with singing 16 songs, being involved in numerous dance routines and had to endure 19 costume changes. But for me the show was stolen by Natalie Casey (2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps) who played Paulette Buonufonté. Her comic take on her role was excellent, and she was hilarious throughout. Her comedic mannerisms and facial features, as well as a surprisingly excellent singing voice made hers IMHO the stand out performance of the night. The stage crew were excellent as the scene changes flowed inconspicuously from one scene to another. All in all a very enjoyable evening, and a show not to be missed if you want a bouncing 2.5 hours in the theatre!! read more
