Right up the road from the Inn we stayed at, we stopped in on our way out of town for a coffee before hitting the road. There is a small seating area just inside the door and it was full of locals including kids. Coffee is in the back by the deli as well as pre-made breakfast sandwiches. The coffee is very good. This is a small grocery. Reminds me of the one's we find at the beach. They've got all your basic needs covered. We met a variety of staff member and they were all lovely. The cashier was friendly. The market is now under new ownership. It is a quintessential Vermont country store. Local products, fresh food available for takeout, friendly people. Nice wine selection, too, and fresh breads. Excellent sour dough. read more

Great place for the three years I've known about it and shopped there. Was a regular when I lived here for a year or so. Really saddened by the bad reviews. The owner is actually really nice and personable, and so is all of the staff. Store has an amazing variety of items, and is reasonably priced. Don't mind buying all that I can here (milk, produce, anything available) and shopping elsewhere for less common items. Oh, and the store is very clean. 5 stars! read more

Walked up here with a serious back injury to buy milk for my baby and Gatorade for myself since I've been ill. Can't charge anything unless it's $5 or more. No exceptions. No sympathy. Left empty handed. Won't be back. Overpriced anyway. This merchant may not be aware that it is actually in violation of the agreement with Visa for any business to place a purchase minimum on debit transactions. Did not leave a good impression on me, especially being the only place for necessity items within 5 miles. Could also be friendlier. read more

Very disgusted with Saxtons River Market! Husband went in to get grinders and the woman sherry at the deli made our grinders with NO gloves! So I contacted them and sherry excuse was she was busy and washing dishes. However that was a lie because before she waited on my husband she has a few others in front and served them without gloves. She was no doing dishes at all! She also have sores on her arms! She also was extremely rude and yelled at me on the phone. After I was trying to ask why she would not wear gloves and that is it a state law that any food that is no cooked has to be made or handled using gloves. Sherry than hung up on me. I called back and she answered and again yelled at me. When I asked to speak to the owner of the store I was told she left early. Just to return them. When I got to the store today around 4pm traveling in bad weather and sick. The woman at the register Pearl was very nice however after telling her again what took place all she said was sorry which was nice of her since Sherry never once apologized or took responsibility for her mistake. I ask who the store owner was since I shop there often and I have never had this issue nor been treated like that. She told me but she said she was out due to surgery for 3 days. I than stated I wanted a phone call or I will contract the health department. Yes she took my number down but what really upsets me more is I get total two different stories about the owner. I'm sure Sherry is lying. I also stated I support local stores however I will no be using/ shopping or recommending this market anymore! I love this place. They carry extremely local maple syrup, extremely local honey, extremely local coffee, and have one of the better wine selections in the area, particularly for a general store. Many such 'general' stores tend toward tourism, but Saxton's river does not. It very much reminds me of the kind of local stores I grew up with in Vermont in the 1970s and 1980s. If you're looking for Hannaford's keep driving. I'm not, which is why I treasure this place. Pearl is always very pleasant with her regular customers, and it doesn't take much to get stories from her about growing up in Rockingham. read more

So they might have wilted produce. They might have a limited selection of items. Sometimes they don't restock what to are looking for in time. But they have tamarind pulp. They have French sea salt. They have curry paste. Papadums. Local cheese. Great sandwiches. More ethnic food than most full size groceries in the area. The also have locally roasted coffee. To all the people that hate, be thankful you can get basmati rice without driving to Brattleboro. They try hard to have a wide variety of ingredients. They get an A for effort read more

While I really like the idea of shopping at a small locally owned market, the SR Village Market has been a consistent disappointment. Their produce is so past its prime I have often had fruit disintegrate in my hand while picking it up. Lettuce s usually slimy, carrots shrivelled, and parsley is let rot in water. There is dust on the tops of most of the boxes of crackers and imported items. There is a general air of grubbiness pervades the place. I've never bought meat or fish there, as I have concerns about food safety and general cleanliness. Today I purchased a pint of ice cream that was completely ice crystallized through the whole container, which means that at some point it had been allowed to totally thaw and re-freeze. Is that the case for other more perishable items in the freezer section? I could not find a single Granny Smith apple in the fruit section that wasn't significantly bruised and belemished -- and no, we're not talking about slightly funky organic apples here, we're talking about fruit that has been handled so carelessly and left to spoil for so long that there is more brown than green on it. I keep wanting to give the place another shot, but thinking about things in the freezer being allowed to thaw and repeatedly re-freeze just gives me the willies. I'm done. read more

The SR market has very good quality meats. I've found the produce (bagged mesclun and spinach), cucumbers, onions, etc., of good quality and to be reasonably priced. Some of the canned and boxed items (mac n' cheese, soups) are expensive. I shop there because the store, more so than other local stores, carries a greater variety of "gourmet" and ethnic foods, like their frozen wood fired pizza, thai food, and baking supplies, like chocolates, flours and spices. read more

I couldn't disagree more with the previous review. My guess is that Sarah O. has some reason to make things up to deliberately trash the SR Village Market. Bad date with an employee, maybe? What's someone from BF doing shopping for fruits, vegetables and frozen food in SR anyway? For someone from BF, there's bigger grocery stores closer than SR. And what sort of person has pieces of fruit "often" disintegrate in their hand while picking them up? An ordinary human would learn that lesson after two or three times, max. Anyway, I've spent part of each summer in the area for the last 20+ years, and find the SR Village Market more than adequate. Employees are helpful, and the meat is exceptionally good. I only found Sarah O's rant because I mislaid the SR phone number and was looking for it online. I'm ordering some meat today, and won't lose any sleep worrying about its quality. I'd give the SR Village Market five stars just to help erase Sarah O's bad evaluation, but that wouldn't be honest. One dishonest post is enough. read more
