I've been to many gyms in my life all ranging from mma to boxing to jujitsu & I always noticed a common theme with these gyms. It was either favoritism or egos in the way. I put my son in the MMA growing gorillas class when he was 5, a bit after he started kindergarten and was looking for something for him to do to keep him busy.. I came across this gym on google and started reading their website, I signed my son up with no payment and they contacted me the following day. He was very nervous and cried the entire drive, it took about 3 classes and lots of deliberations before he stopped crying and accepted MMA is what he was going to do. Coach Marco, Coach Beto, Coach Becca, Coach Ella, and the JR coaches are SUPER amazing with the kids class, they all train together and make sure none of the kids are unmotivated to work. I love the camaraderie they instill in the kids, my son has learned resilience, compassion, confidence and focus with the coaches. Oh yeah they also remember EVERY CHILDS NAME they never confuse them and there are a lot of unique names here. We are about 1 year in MMA and I am now easing my son into the jiu jitsu class and it is WAY different, he struggles with it but the coaches are quick to notice the frustration of trying something that is scary! We are from south central LA and commute to Monterey park for his school and commute to Pasadena after school and commute back to LA after class (it's a long day) but we believe this is the BEST place for our son to interact, learn and grow with other kids. My primary care physician worked out here and highly recommended the place for my kids. Son started here when he was 5 and coaches are top notch, they love what they do and it shows. Coaches at a few other places were just going through the motions, that is not the case here. They really engage the kids. Son is now 6.5 and still loves it and I believe it is due mainly to the quality of the coaching staff. Coach Marco is simply fantastic with kids, and coach Dakota is superb as well. Kids classes can get pretty crowded, but it's because they are that good. I wish I had a nurturing and supportive place with great staff like this when I was young, but even happier I found a place like this for my kids. We joined on a whim. I felt my two little boys needed an activity where they could develop discipline and self-confidence. I had a very unique introduction to Peter, one of the instructors at SBG. Unique in the sense that I accidentally parked blocking his door. Peter is well versed in several martial art techniques and fighting styles, which is unlike most trainers. He's relaxed demeanor and enthusiasm about martial arts and the sport, probably make him an outstanding instructor as well. One of the most surprising things about this gym is they offer and training in Filipino fighting sticks. Never before have I seen a gym offer this. And shockingly, they only wear gloves and a helmet. I can only speak to the quality of the kids classes. Pros: * Coaches for kids classes are fantastic. * Gym is clean. * As of this date, free parking is available. Neutral: * Rates are high, but are comparable to what other martial arts studios are charging in the area. You pay monthly for two, 1-hour classes/week (there is no option to take only one class/week). Cons: * If you pay your monthly rates with a debit or credit card, you will get charged $3 each time. To avoid this surcharge, you must provide them with a voided check so that they can enter/store your personal information onto a third-party, online, cloud-based management software platform. As of this date, these are your only two choices in regards to how to pay. * Because the kids' classes are popular (since the coaches are great), the space can get quite crowded. * Restroom cleanliness (one "stall", unisex) is hit and miss, but I'm not surprised, considering that there are kids also using it. * Benches for parents to sit on while waiting (that is, if you can get one) = extremely uncomfortable. My 6 year old started off slow, had trouble paying attention and focusing. But now he has improved a lot and loves going to Jitsufit! I started BJJ in September of 2021, it was a really great decision in my life. I joined one of many Gracie academies (I won't mention which one because it wouldn't be fair for them or their students.) The environment there was interesting, very crowded. I met some good people, but the egos on the matts were too much for me. I would always get injured one way or another. Then I met Coach Marco. I knew him from my brother (who trains there). This place is so special, everyone is a family member, theres laughter, jokes and it makes training so much more special. They do BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, Boxing and Yoga, and the coaches are amazing, patient, and have a wealth of knowledge. I was training for a few years back in Massachusetts before I moved to Pasadena, and of all of the gyms I tried, this one was my favorite! I enrolled my nephew this summer and got to meet Coach Marco. I have been very impressed. SBG is clean, organized, lots of natural lighting and air conditioned. The center is well maintained and has plenty of parking available. All the coaches are fully engaged and have fun with the kids, while at the same time teaching them MMA and Jujitsu skills and techniques. This gym is absolutely amazing! I've done Jiu-Jitsu for awhile on and off (mostly off) for almost a decade and I've never been to a gym where they have: an established thoughtful curriculum, a staff that is so knowledgable, and facilitaties where I don't worry about giving ringworm to my wife. From walking into the gym until leaving I always feel welcome and most importantly safe. I've been injuried more than once doing BJJ, but since coming to SBG I have no fear of someone holding a submission for too long or spazzing out. SBG has an incredible Foundations class which allows new students to learn the fundamental movements in BJJ in a structured safe manner. I'm not very good at writing reviews, but I'll give it a shot. Both of my kids and I have trained at this gym/school/dojo for about 6 years now - with some time off during pandemic, etc. Let me first say that regardless of the gym, you only get out of it what you put into it. This is such a supportive community of friendly, talented people... Neither myself nor my kids are "tough" - we aren't training to be cage fighters (obvi, it's a LOT too late for me, anyway) - but there are so many wonderful aspects of BJJ/MMA to explore and enjoy. I particularly appreciate the family atmosphere, and this is a great sport to do as a family. It's also important for me that my 13 yo girl learns the self-defense skills in a safe and supportive, non-threatening environment that is honest and open without being scary. You will find all types here, but no macho-man buttheads that you dread working with. Nice, normal people from police officers to students to business people and teachers... many of whom are competition level practitioners but minus the attitudes. The SBG curriculum is as good as it gets, and the coaches are extremely talented teachers and just wonderful, fun people. A compassionate teacher makes passionate learners. Master Jon (founder of Kenpofit MAA) is absolutely the most genuine and influential instructor I have studied under. When it comes to teaching, training, and even learning(as Master Jon is continuously improving himself), Master Jon always expresses enthusiasm; and when it comes to listening and/or understanding, Master Jon is your best friend, a counselor, and a mentor. He makes me want to excel in everything I do inside and outside of the studio; and most often, he believes in me more than I believe in myself! I was looking for a martial arts studio near my home. I studied Kenpo about 12 years ago and well I wanted to get back into it. There are 2 or 3 local schools in pasadena, but the small things like parking well that turned me away. Now I found Kenpofit the instructor is an all around great guy. I came into the studio and right away was greeted and asked if I had any questions. I asked about times and what the tuition included. This is a great opportunity, the tuition is reasonable for the amount of time you can spend in the studio training, you have World Champ Frank Trejo who teaches there as well. Jon Boone is the real deal! What sets JitsuFit apart is Jon Boone and his first class staff. His love and dedication to the kids is heartwarming. He focuses on turning students into better people. I cannot write enough wonderful words about Kenpofit. My five year old son takes classes here twice a week and has done so for about six months now. First of all, my son loves it! We never have to coax him into going to class, he is eager to do so. Kenpofit understands children. The black belt instructors conduct classes with compassionate discipline, humor and well organized, targeted lesson plans. My child is learning practical, physical skills like round house kicks and punching as well as esteem building social skills like how to assert and himself, goal setting and self respect. This is a review from both a Kids and Adults perspective. My son Dexter (age 7) has been going here now for over a year. He is currently an Orange belt in Karate and has recently started and shown interest in the Jiu-Jitsu class (white belt). Masters Jon, Marco, Dakota and Linda are all great teachers and are the absolute best with kids. They have infinite patience and know exactly how to explain things in a way that kids understand. They have mastered the art of making it fun enough to keep the kids attention and focus, but you will be amazed at how well your kids actually learn the technique and skills required to defend themselves. Your kids confidence, patience, respect, listening skills and maturity will be night and day from day 1 to even day 30. Now as for myself, I have been a UFC/MMA fanatic for more then half my life. Now in my 30s, seeing my son having so much fun inspired me to get my ass in there as well. I have now been an active member in both the MMA Fight Science and the Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes for about 6 Months. The MMA class is a great way to burn calories while also learning real technique. Will you sweat? Will you hurt? yes and yes. but it is oh so rewarding. Lots of karate, kenpo, and boxing fundamentals. Foot work, head movement, etc. Do you have to be a fighter? no, you can have lots of fun just burning calories and going through the movements, but you can and will walk away with the essentials to grow in your own defense/offense and be an overall badass. Sparring usually happens a few times a month and is a great way to practice everything you have been learning. Everyone In class is good spirited, egos are left outside the mat. We learn and grow as a class and I see everyone here as my brothers and sisters. All of the above goes for the Jitsu classes as well. Master Jon is a black belt under Master Rubens Charles Maciel, aka "Cobrinha"@ Alliance Los Angeles. These guys are the real deal and you will be humbled daily under Master Jons instruction. His experience with kids transfers well to the adult classes and everything is explained in detail, with great patience, perfect articulation and with great attention to the details. I never felt intimidated and all the higher belts make an effort to make you feel welcomed and go out of their way to make sure you are doing the drills correctly. When it comes time to spar/roll, they don't necessarily go easy on you haha, but they make sure you understand why you got choked or why your arm was placed in an arm bar.. ya know, so you learn to not let it happen again..eventually. My kids (ages 7 and 6) have been going to SBG SoCal since December to take Jiu Jitsu classes. My husband is the one that brought the kids initially (based on a recommendation from a friend). After the first class, he said we should sign up the kids. I asked if we should look at other gyms but he said no. I was surprised because he's the kind of guy would would spend days researching a coffee maker. I've had the opportunity to bring the kids once in a while and I get why he didn't need to look. SBG is a gem. All the coaches are skilled, attentive and just fun. You can tell they like each other and they have formed a bond. They are great with kids and focus on not just the skills but life lessons. You feel good bringing your kids there. It's a well-run gym. Other gyms have since opened up that are closer to us but we haven't even wanted to look. We're loyal to Coach Marco and the team, and are grateful for this gym. read more

My wife and I had a private lesson with head coach Marco a couple of weeks ago, and we'll definitely be coming back for me. The gym was easy to find, is well kitted out, and appears to have been newly refurbished (to a high standard, I might add - it looks wonderful inside). The lesson itself was fantastic - my wife and I have very little martial arts experience, so Marco ran through some self defence techniques with is in the session. Marco is confident, knowledgeable, and patient - he delivered his teachings with ease and good humour, and I can't recommend him enough. Heard nothing but great things about coaches Jon, Marco, and Lynda from a friend whose daughter was taking classes at the time. So when they announced their grand opening special I jumped right on it and decided to give it a try as I was in search for a new school that fit my schedule, after taking the BJJ foundations trial classes I was hooked! The friendly and welcoming vibe from the coaches, students and parents from when you walk in to when you walk out is an experience I've never felt, everyone introduces themselves and greets each other which makes it even better, I use to think it was like that because I was new, but six months later the vibe has not changed one bit. If you're reading these reviews, you're probably seeing a lot of reviews from parents who take their kids here, but not a lot of adult perspectives. This review is to give an idea of what to expect as an adult student. First of all, JitsuFit offers both Kenpo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, and while I've been told the Kenpo classes are awesome by many, many people, I've never taken one. My experience is based on the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) side of things. To give you an idea of my background, I've never liked sports or working out. I've been overweight my whole life, had an unhealthy relationship with food, and take a while to learn stuff. In other words, I was a good example of the lowest tier of students who could come in to this facility. That said, from day one, Master Jon, his instructors, and his students were all welcoming and encouraging. There is no ego or overflow of testosterone I've heard about in other MMA/BJJ gyms. Everyone in the classes are nice, helpful, encouraging, and great to work with (students as well as teachers.) Even in the beginning, when I couldn't even come close to keeping up with the fitness level of everyone else, no one made me feel ashamed or useless. If anything, the atmosphere is one of encouragement and everyone doing their own personal best. In addition, Master Jon (who leads most of the BJJ classes) isn't just a good Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, he's a phenomenal teacher. I've been around a LOT of teachers in different disciplines in my life and Master Jon has a wonderful way of explaining things on many different levels so you "get it". He's patient, understanding, and kind, while still ensuring you get the details right and improve your technique. He's also a direct student of Cobrinha's (which, if you know anything about BJJ, is one of the best in the world) - and Cobrinha's brilliant methods definitely come through in Master Jon's teaching. It's probably why despite being a small, relaxed school, his students are able to hold their own against (and beat) some of the best in open rolls and tournaments. That said, the atmosphere tends to be friendly, relaxed,yet still committed to excellence. If your'e looking for a military drill-instructor type of environment, this isn't it... but if you want a place that has people who are friendly while still work hard, and who will give it their all while being super conscious about the potential injuries that go with any contact sport, this is the place to be. The place also has some killer sign-up deals, is more than reasonably priced, and the facility is super clean (cleaned thoroughly every day, which is unfortunately a rarity for a lot of BJJ gyms!) I can't say enough good things about these guys, but I will leave you with the results. In just under six months, I've added a lot of lean muscle mass and cut a significant percentage of body fat. I've gone from being completely screwed in a street fight to at least having a chance of knowing how to defend myself. My diet has changed, my fitness levels have improved out of sight, and I'm now going there 5 - 6 times a week - purely because it's such good fun and the people there are awesome. If a guy who HATED the thought of exercise can do it, you definitely can too. If you're thinking of even trying out BJJ or Kenpo and seeing if its a good fit, this is the perfect place to do it. I seriously recommend giving them a call and getting a free intro lesson (at the time of writing) as soon as you can. It's the best decision I've ever made, and it might be yours too. read more

Our son has been taking lessons at this studio for a while now. On the first day, Q was scared and withdrawn but, Master Marco was such a sport and worked with him until he was ready to give it a try. Fast forward and he is absolutely loving it and enjoying every single day of it. He loves it! And I see it in his smile. Master Jon along with Master Marco and Master Dakota are exceptional examples of how to teach and handle children in this type of environment. Master Marco has made quite an impact on Q's boosted interest in soaking up on all he can of the art. My husband and I are very happy to see how much respect and love the staff show for all the students. My wife and I have been taking our son to Jitsufit for about four years now and they are simply fantastic! The instructors are so good not only in their martial arts skills, but in how they teach the kids these arts. They truly care about wanting all of their students to learn karate and jujitsu the right way. On top of this, they teach the kids how to be better human beings, period. It's all about having great discipline, and by the end of the day, you can clearly see the kids coming out of it this way. Our son's skills have gotten better and better thanks to the wonderful staff here at Jitsufit, not to mention that he truly enjoys learning karate from them. I can't compare our son's experience to martial arts instruction at other places since this is the only place we've ever taken our son to, but if you're not happy at other places or if you've never been to one and aren't sure of where to go, then look no further than Jitsufit!
