As anyone from the country can attest, for all the vast categories of takeaway food that Melbourne…read moredoes better than small towns, the only real exception is fish and chips. Flakes on Sydney Road is a valiant attempt at fish and chips that, as a generic kind of takeaway meal, is satisfying enough. However, anything that comes in a box and not butcher's paper will fail to be real fish and chips. The chips are more akin to the food court and late night van variety than to the choppy, uneven chips in the traditional fish and chips sense, but they're still tasty and can even have a lick of crispiness to them on occasion. While greasy, the flake, butterfish and whiting are all tasty enough and go down well with a bit of the complimentary tartare sauce (note: it's only complimentary when part of pack). The nuggets and calamari rings are a bit on the generic side of things, though the latter is usually free of excessive chewiness, which is nice. The dim sims and potato cakes are all fine, but the fish cakes can sometimes be a bit undercooked. There're a few family packs from which to choose, as well as a couple of salads. The burgers and souvlakis' are also pretty solid. I'm yet to try any of their recent venture into pastas or pizzas, so it wouldn't be fair to comment on that wing of the business. Flake's does free local delivery from 5.00 to 10.20pm, 7 days a week, for a minimum of $15. All in all, it's not bad, but it's also not what I define as proper fish and chips.

However, since I was down in the area for a gaming club, I thought that stopping by for some fish and chips might be appropriate. Well, that turned out to be a bonus because not only did they serve up some pretty good chips, and some rather nice dim sims, but the price wasn't all that bad either. Yep, they certainly meet the benchmark.

Having been frequenting this place for about five years now, I've never had a dud experience with either the staff or the food here. The fare is standard old-style fish and chips with no pomp or bluster and I love them for that fact alone. They don't try and force manky day-old salads at you, nor do they quibble over a small order. And they do a kid's pack! It fuckin' rules. It's got a small fish and a dimmy and some chips for under a fiver! You won't get that anywhere around these parts these days. In fact, all their deals on the back of the takeaway menu are super good. If there's a gripe to be found here is that they (along with almost every chipper in town) still serve flake as 'flake' rather than labelling it as shark for the dummies. It's a small blemish on an otherwise awesome business however. Their burgers are tops too.

After many years of living in Fitzroy, and a lot of disappointing fish and chips, I finally found a…read morereliable fish and chip shop in East Melbourne (Kiwi Fish and Chip). Their fish was fresh, batter crisp and chips perfect. Unfortunately now that we live in Brunswick, East Melbourne is a long way to go when the craving for F&Cs hits. So a new search began. There was a recent article in Time Out about the best F&Cs in town and lo and behold, one of them was close-ish to us. This is Union Square Fish and Chips. Therefore it was essential that this place had to be sampled. So, whilst the wife was away off I went to get the 'old school fish and chips of my childhood' (so the article says). I went for a basic battered Flake with a 'small' chips. Lucky I didn't have the medium or large chips as there were hundreds of them in the min size! OK the fish was cooked OK and the batter was not too bad and there was a copious quantity of chips. Overall review: it was alright. Nothing to go 'wow' about but not bad either, just alright. Will I go back? Probably not. I think the search for the holy grail of take away fish and chips in the Brunswick area will continue elsewhere. Once you've had the fish and chips at the Terminus in North Fitzroy it's hard to accept lesser specimens. Oh, they also sell Burgers and Souvlaki (Union Square that is).

I don't need any other type of fish. To me this place is purely a grilled salmon and fried chip shop. If you've read my other posts, you might know I'm a fried chip aficionado. These chips are pretty good - not great, but pretty good. I like mine a little extra crispy and always ask for the extra crisp and the town hall guys deliver beautifully. The salmon sits on a tray of ice in the huge open front window display. There is always a decent choice when it comes to fish, but since my first try at their salmon I have never felt the need to try another. The staff here are friendly and are easily up for a chat while you wait for your meal. The ambiance is like that of most fish and chip shops, white tiles, coke fridge, TV on top of coke fridge and old copies of woman's weekly and who magazine.

In fact the meat simply didn't seemed to be cooked anywhere near as good as some of the other places that I have had souvlaki's at. Mind you, the place is cheap, which is always a huge bonus (about $9.00 for a souvlaki), though sometime cheap doesn't necessarily mean that they are good. Apparently this place does fish and chips as well, however it was the souvlaki that I came for, and it was a little disappointing.

It is easy to park out the front and they dont take forever with your order. The shop is clean and the staff are friendly and cheerful. Unfortunately they dont have facilities to pay with a card - you must use cash, but there are ATMs accross the car park in front of the supermarket. What I like the most about the shop is that they have numerous value packs available. Two of the better ones are: Fishermans Basket with 1 grilled fish, 2 calamari rings, 1 scallop, 1 crab stick, 1 king prawn, chips and tartare sauce for $11.90 and Pack For Two with 2 flakes, 2 potato cakes, 2 dim sims, minimum chips and 2 cans of soft drink for $18. The second one is what I usually get - which is enough for myself and my young twins without either wasting food or leaving any of us hungry. However I always get a few scallops with it as well, which brings it to approx $21. I highly recommend this fish and chips shop.
