I've driven through 43 states and I've never come across a place quite like Scarlet Scoop! I haven't lived in Houma in 6 years and this ice cream parlor will always be a nostalgic little piece of home for me when I'm visiting town. The ambience is unique & reminds me of when I was younger. The light fixtures, the walls, the stools, the old signage, the little candy shop... I love it all! They even have a fridge on the side with dog ice cream. It's always the owner working when I come in and I never know if he remembers me or not but I kindof love always seeing his familiar face. I'm glad it wasn't shut down after the pandemic, it's definitely a place I always look forward to stopping at when I'm home. read more

As a Yelper for years now, I think my fellow Elites would agree with me when I say that we don't consider ourselves food experts but that we utilize this platform to not only help support local businesses but bring awareness to gems around the cities for our fellow foodies. My excitement as I walked in was quickly derailed by a dark haired employee behind the counter when I said, "Let me YELP! this place, it's so cute!!" as it was met with an eye roll and a sarcastic smirk. No clue why and he obviously was also not very happy to greet me as I asked to taste the Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream. I was afraid to even ask but another gentleman behind the counter met me with a smile, it was like night and day. I asked to taste the Sea Salt from him but I wanted to get out of there ASAP. After reading through their business page, it looks like there's been a trend of one individual that's just not very happy to greet customers consistently through the years, which is sad to see because I heard about how my father-in-law has been going there for over 30 years. My experience was uncomfortable but I will say that the ice cream is delicious. It's a beautiful shop with a little patio area to enjoy your ice cream with family and friends. I would absolutely recommend the ice cream and absolutely push to support local businesses, especially in such a tiny town like Houma. This is a true gem within what looks like a "forgotten little city" but would absolutely WARN you as you may possibly be greeted with disrespect. We visited Scarlet Scoop on a recent trip to Thibodaux and we were not disappointed. So many fun flavors and the ice cream tasted delicious! The quality was superb. The service was friendly and the ambiance was fun (although it's tiny and it was crowded!). My only complaint was that I wish I had been told there was a fee to pay with my debit card instead of seeing it after the fact in my receipt. Transparency is key so maybe tell your customers in advance or post the fee. read more

I go to college at Nicholls and I'm from Alabama so I've never been to any ice cream shops around the area until last night. I was recommended Scarlett Scoop from a friend and expected just an average ice cream parlor. I walked in and looked at the flavors and two popped out to me, the Cookie Monster and the C-19, so naturally I ordered both of them. It was perfect. The scoops were large and the flavors incredible. The ice cream was different than anything I ever had. It had a lot of ingredients in it but they all blended nicely. The ice cream was the perfect temperature, which I know sounds weird, but I could take big bites of it and chew the yummy add ins without any worry of brain freeze. I give this place a solid 10/10 and would recommend to anyone. read more

I asked him why the difference and he said, "The price is what the credit card receipts shows." I asked again and he repeated himself again. I attempted to ask to verify what we had been charged for and he repeated himself a third time. We left and I will never return again. I was kind to him and was not treated the same. You've heard of the challenges a one-armed paper hanger can face ... that's nothing, compared to what the proprietor of the Scarlet Scoop faced when our band of 20 dusty and dirty, tired but talented, hot and kind of hangry home-building volunteers showed up to supplement his regular clientele throughout the past week. Like that paper hanger, he had to move fast and skillfully to keep the long line moving and the exhausted volunteers and ice cream lovers happy. And he did. His excellent selection of delicious ice cream options were surprising to find in out-of-the-way Houma ... and so very welcome during a week of 90s. I know the last few years with the pandemic and now the generally bad economy have taken a toll on mom and pop businesses and I really respect what they bring to a community. That being said, this potentially adorable ice cream spot could use a good cleaning and spiffing up. It's a small space bursting at the seams with an insane number of ice cream and candy options. No one would miss out if they had fewer options and the place would feel roomier, neater, and cleaner. As for the taste of the ice cream, it wasn't the best and it wasn't the worst. This place is super cute inside. It looks like an old-fashioned candy shop. The walls are covered in a wallpaper that looks like "old" newspaper/magazine clippings. Lots of wood antiques. There was a mirror with stained glass in the back left-hand corner that I liked. The waffle cones smell amazing. Sadly they were out of Oil Spill. I had the Ponchatrain Strawberry which was more like a Strawberries N' Cream. It was refreshing. I also had the Double Chocolate Fudge which was OK. Scarlet Scoop might be the best ice cream shop I have ever visited in my life. Seriously. Upon walking in the quaint little building, the first thing you notice is how nostalgic the place is. From the old fashion candies to the decor to the smell, you feel like you have escaped reality. The flavors offered are incredible. I can't remember how many are offered.... Thirty, maybe? It is a little overwhelming to choose just one or two flavors, but it's a good kind of overwhelming. I have had a couple of flavors now. The Oil Spill is totally legit. I love chocolate, but I'm not a "everything chocolate all the time" kind of person. The vanilla ice cream with the variety of chocolate mixins gives this ice cream some really enjoyable textures while keeping the chocolateyness in check. The apple pie (I can't remember the flavor name, Hubby brought it home one day) flavor was also unreal. Real chunks of sweet apple pie filling and the crumble was no joke. The parlor also offers seasonal flavors, such as one I had with satsuma in it (satsuma bourbon maple????), also incredible!!! If you want a little throwback and want to taste how ice cream began, I tried the Red Pop flavor. It was an original strawberry soda pop mixed with condensed milk and frozen. It was really interesting. Of course, milk shakes are also a grand way to go. Pick any flavor (one or more!!) to be made into a shake. Add some whipped cream and nuts and I promise you will have a milkshake that looks like it belongs in the movies. The thickness of the shakes is perfect... as thick as it can get and still make its way through the straw without causing you to pass out. Gah!!! Seriously, ya gotta try it. read more

So tonight I went to Scarlet Scoop in Houma, La to pick up an order for someone. When I arrived, there was a couple already inside being helped; I was the only other person in the store and next in line. Well some other customers walked in ...and it's unnecessary, but I'll add that they were Caucasian. So the guys who's working the counter looks over me to help the white customers that just walked in (I guess I'm invisible at this point). I proceed to yell out why I'm here ....the couple that walked in points at me to let the guy know I was up next. The guy working the counter then comes up to me and I repeat what I said. He then tells the guy that he's working with what I said. The guy fixing the order finishes preparing it and slides the bag on the count behind me. Mind you I'm still standing in front him...... So I ask him If the order he put behind me mine. He says "yea" real low. So apparently they didn't want to serve me and all money isn't green. I'm glad the order wasn't mine because I would have left it right there. I've never been to this place for myself and I wouldn't ever spend a dime here. My sister and her husband decided to bring me here when I visited the area to see them since they know I love ice cream. I happily went along, but didn't expect much since I've never really expected that Louisiana to be known for dairy products. The first impression of this place was when the door was opened and the smell of cooking waffle cones wafted out. The second good impression was the decor of the place: sort of like an old time ice cream parlor. I then took a glance over at the selection-- there were about sixteen different flavors to choose from. These were not your standard vanilla, chocolate, strawberries, but a few that stuck out in my mind were: Blackberry Cobbler, Oil Spill, Cookie Monster, Spiderman, Cotton Candy. I was very happy with these. The first day, I tried the blackberry cobbler; the second day was a cookie-inspired concoction. I loved the blackberry cobbler; the cookie ice cream I wouldn't get again. However, the ice creams were well made. We ended up making a point to return every day during the visit. I really thought it was a great place and highly recommended. Don't get me wrong. The shop is very beautiful, looks appealing, and has good ice cream. But the service is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! Never been treated so poorly by anyone. Terrible service, no smiles, very depressing. As me and my friend walked in to a long line we were discussing what we wanted as we were on the phone with someone. We walked out to grab some more money and came back in. As we are waiting in line I told my friend I didn't want anything and I was going to sit outside. She said that's fine and on the way out the OWNER rolled his eyes at me and said, "Don't come back in.". I was shocked that he would say that to one of his customers. I then walked back in and he said, "What do you want?" I couldn't see the sign with the prices so I said how much is the cup? He very rudely said for me to look at the bored and figure it out. I was done at that point and walked out. It was ridiculous how he was treating people. I understand if you may not be happy with what you do, or may not be in a good mood at the time. But rolling your eyes, being cocky, and just a all out jerk to your customers is not the way to run a business. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The ice cream is not worth the attitude you will get from the owner and clients. If anything just go get some frozen yogurt or go to the store and buy some ice cream. read more

Horrible service! It was my first time there and the owner was very rude to me and my boyfriend. We were the only black people in there and felt unwelcome. My sister, niece, niece's boyfriend and i went in one evening during marti gras and I dont know if it was just because they are teenagers or because my niece's boyfriend is African American. But my family and i felt disrespected by the older man working the counter. I told him we were all together and he was like so your not going to buy anything, and he asked that while what we ordered was being payed for. Please keep in mind that when that store is busy you have to stand and walk in a single file. My family will not go to this business ever again and I do not suggest going there to anyone else. I love this place and have come many times through the years.....I love the salted caramel. I'm guessing they use Blue Bell ice cream because shortly after Blue Bell closed we drove down from New Orleans and a sign said they were closed due to unavailability of ice cream and they remain closed. Still, the temperature of the product is perfect and it seems to taste better than Blue Bell we get elsewhere.....it makes me wonder if Blue Bell makes them a special batch. First, let me say that the place is very nostalgic and cute in the inside, it would be the perfect place to go to if the customer service was what it should be. The owner seemed very annoyed when my kids and I walked through the door. We were not greeted and he made me feel unwelcome. I asked for a taste of one of the flavors and he seemed annoyed. My kids were amazed by the cool treats and they are young so they were exploring the place. He was watching them carefully which made me uncomfortable. I then ordered ice cream for my kids, which I thought was overpriced, but I decided to get it anyway. The total came up to what I thought was over the price it should've been but because of how uncomfortable I felt I just paid and left. When I left, I added everything up and the total was definitely over what it should've been. I called the store and explained everything to the guy who waited on me. He was unapologetic and he seemed confused about why the total ended up being what it was. He kept putting me on hold and he basically ended up saying that the total was about 8 dollars over what it should've been due to a credit card company charge. I have never heard of such a thing. I'm just going to chalk it up as a loss, but I will never go back to SCARLETT SCOOP. They are over priced, the ice cream was disgusting and my kids didn't even eat it.
