This was one of the largest campgrounds I have ever been to and LOVED it. It's def very remote but yet only 10 min from the tourist attractions downtown at the Ohiopyle State Park. Such a beautiful scenery which looked to be a couple hundred acres of the deep tall tree mountains. Sunset and Rise was just bliss as well!! We enjoyed all the natural waterslides in the river which runs thru town. Ate some good brisket, taters. fried veggies, and couple crispy brews at Falls City Pub as we stopped at the diff places of Chalk-Hill. We are already booked to come back in Sept. this year for changing of the leaves desire! read more

My best friend and I camped here last night, we planned a last minute camping trip to Ohiopyle yesterday and ran across Scarlett Knob online. Super affordable price, cheaper than the state park campground. We stayed in the small group campsite area and it was plenty big. Only reason it's a 4 star is because the bathrooms/showers are far away and very minimal. Bring quarters for the shower, you insert them in a metal box on the side and turn the dial. My advice to you is just pee in the woods, it's easier than walking forever to get to the bathroom. read more

I stay here for one weekend every year with a group of friends. We stay in the Group Area. Campsites are always clean. Some years we have loud neighbors who party until the sun comes up, but most years, things are pretty quiet. Management does what they can to shut things down around 11pm. The roads into the campsites can be navigated by a Honda Civic. The bathrooms with running water are pretty far away, but there are porta-johns on every road read more

We had a group of 14 folks, and got one of the group sites. Perfect site, great time. Could have used better access to water. The issue was the folks running the camp were really weird about us running about a half-hour late checking out. The main guy came down in the morning, and the first thing he asked me was "so, you guys have decided to stay another night?" C'mon buddy, just give us our nudge, we'll get out of your way. Anyway, he gave us 30 minutes to leave, but when we took 35 minutes, they charged us a visitors fee of $2.50 per person, or $35. And when I paid it, I got the mother of all dirty looks from the woman in the front. It basically put a sour note on what was an otherwise perfect experience, for seemingly no good reason. I guess we'd go back, but if you choose Scarlett Knob, be prepared for abnormally strict adherence to the rules. read more

Where do I begin? I was a boy scout over 30 years ago and I've roughed it all over the country so I've shat in the woods many times, but I also like some of the finer things in life like not having to drive to a flush toilet and knowing ahead of time that the roads to all of the sites require a monster truck, not the typical family car. The Dont Tread On Me flag should have been a red flag but $25 a night on Labor Day weekend sounded ok since its right up the road from Fallingwater. All of the Boy Scout memorabilia was nice to look at but it too should have given us pause for the condition of the sites and overall service we were (not) about to receive. I dont know how PA health department allows this place to stay alive with only 2 flush toilets/running water in the mens and 3 in the womens for a campground that easily holds a few 100 people. Your only other choice is pit toilets that not even a homeless person would use and the showers were just as bad from what I saw. "WE DON'T permit excessive noise at any time. Excessive noise is any noise which disturbs other campers." Really? Well even keeping the large loud groups farther away isnt enough since we heard chanting by what seemed like a choir of drunken cats howl and "sing" until well past midnight....the nearby "family" campers were also a joke as they were loud rude and clueless to camp etiquette as well. We, 2 adults and one 10 year old boy, should not have been amongst 20 somethings and older teenagers without adults who shined bright lights into our sight and had loud sex 20 feet from my sons tent as we tried to enjoy the fire. Do not stay here if you can afford to stay anywhere else. This place is for big groups and young ones without kids. You get what you pay for applies, yes, however more warning about what you DONT get would have made my decision easier to look elsewhere. read more

We stayed at this campground over Memorial Day weekend, and had a great time. The staff was all very friendly, and the little store has everything. The folks who come around every night to check on things are very helpful, and it helps keep things relatively quiet when you want to go to bed. It's very close to the town of Ohiopyle, Falling Water, etc. Staying here is a nice alternative to staying in a bed and breakfast, inn, etc. if you like camping. You have plenty of space at the campgrounds, and can either cook or head into town for food. My only real beef is that unlike a state/national park, there's no bathroom building of which I'm aware. You have to use port-o-potties, which are conveniently placed, but well, only get emptied every couple days. Rumor had it that there was somewhere to shower, but we never found it. This isn't a huge issue for me, as it's only a weekend, but the ladies in the group were a little miffed. All in all, I'd totally come back, since I love the area, and prices were reasonable here. read more

This campground is very very rough. The latrines are filthy and in major need of a coat of paint. The roads are extremely rough and unlit. There is a flush toilet at the 'store' but it definitely feels awkward as it seems to be attached to a place where people live. Piles of junk at every turn take away from pretty views. Be warned, this area is very rocky so you will need padding under your tent. The location is a positive, just a pretty drive to town. read more

I use to frequent and reccomend this campground to everyone. However, this trip was a huge disappointment. I brought a lot of people into this campground and plan to share this horrible experience in hopes of stopping people from going. We planned a trip with my Marine brother who just returned from a 4 year deployment. We were looking forward to a family camping trip. When we got here our site was littered with glass and garbage. We cleaned it up and proceeded to unpack. Then we discovered there was no bathroom or Portajon on the road we were assigned. We filled 3 campsites on the loop with friends and family. My father removed jaggers and poison ivy to create a small foot path to the road to our left where a bathroom was located. The rules of the campground do not state that this cannot be done. We were approached and told to go to the camp office. When my father arrived to discuss the problem and they told him he had one hour to pack up and leave. There was no civil discussion or understanding to accessibility for the 16 paying heads that needed access to a bathroom or even a warning. Otherwise their campground would be littered with human feces. The son of the owner berated my father, who loves nature, and treated him as a criminal. They could not show us a rule that was broken on the set of rules that we were given. Nothing anywhere stated a rule that prohibited removing brush or creating a foot path. I am highly upset. My family waited to take this trip with my brother for a long time. I'm very upset. We loved this place and taking this moment away from my family ensures we will not return. Repeat Customer, Enough is Enough, Never Again We have been repeat customers of the Scarlett Knob Campground. Sometimes multiple times a year. We always go with anywhere from 10-20 people, are respectful and courteous to our neighbors and we keep our sites clean. Our bill is usually around $400 for the weekend for the site(s), which is a nice chunk of change for the campground. Strange enough, every year there seemed to be some issue with money. Somehow we ended up owing them a little more for some random reason. This year was the boiling point. We had a gathering at our campsite and had a few visitors that came by. We were told that we would have to pay for the visitors since they camped. Only thing was, they didn't camp...the just didn't turn in their parking passes. SO instead of accepting my apology that they didn't check-in/check-out properly and respect the fact that we are repeat customers, the proprietors of the campground essentially stole over $60 from the required cash security deposit that I left the day we checked in...I can see why it has to be cash, easier to steal it that way. The kicker, is that we had less than 15 total people, but to get a bigger campsite that we had in the past, I actually paid EXTRA...i paid for people that weren't even there, and yet since we had visitors that weren't sure of the check-in procedure, we were charged for people that didn't camp. It's absurd and unacceptable, to top it off, the old man shouted something about liberals and Barrack Obama at me as I walked to my vehicle after he stole money from me. Suppose he's angry about the election, racist or confused. Either way, avoid this place at all costs, yeah it's close to town, but they'll steal whatever money you'll save in gas money if you stay at a site that is a little bit further out. Besides, this place has terrible facilities, the outhouses are disgusting and the people that run the joint are thieves. read more

My wife and I came to Ohiopyle for the labor day weekend and stayed at the scarlett knob campground. We met the nicest guy at the office who told us about the land and gave us directions to our camp site. When we got to our site, it was extremely clean and plenty of room for my wife and I to space out! We met some really nice people around our site also! We never had a single problem while we were there and the Porto John's were easily accessible. They do have a couple showers that take a quarter for five minutes of use, plenty of time for a quick shower or pop another quarter in! We ran out of firewood on our last night and ended up going to the camp office and boy I wish we had just purchased wood there instead of hauling wood in the truck. It was very affordable and burned really well! We also stayed in the group area where drinking alcohol is permitted and the quiet hours start at midnight instead of 9pm Excellent first time camping and cannot wait to come back! read more

Terrible service - they overcharged me for my stay and when I called to ask for a correction, they said that there was nothing they could do and wouldn't budge. I even offered to take a few nights free on another trip or to accept firewood on my next trip. They wouldn't budge despite the fact that it was their error. I could have stayed in a hotel for less money than they charged me for this campsite. Beware when booking. read more

Potable water is all the way back at the office, or the bathrooms. You will not be anywhere near the office or bathrooms. The bathrooms are just pit toilets. You will be close to porta-potties. You will have to drive back along the poorly maintained road to get water or use a real bathroom. This is the barest of car camping. Go to the state campground. read more

I read a lot of bad reviews about this place, and I don't necessarily agree, and since I didn't know what to expect I will share my experience First off people complained about lack of bath houses and things of that nature - that's just not priority to me if I am camping. They had these facilities at the main building where you check in, but we didn't use them. In fact what I liked about this place was it was less sterile and more primitive than a state park. (I prefer primitive.) The location is pretty and our spot was rather isolated, which I liked. (Our group included two couples, two tents, one spot.) There aren't hiking trails, and I love to hike, but you can easily go into the nearby state park to hike if you wish. We left the campground during the day to go fish in the Youghiogheny River. I read that the owners were rude and many complained about that - in my opinion the owners aren't warm and fuzzy but they aren't rude either. We didn't have any problems with them and they didn't with us. They are very protective of the trees on their property (understandable) so if needed you can buy wood (and other this and thats) at their store. Or scavenge the woods for loose pieces of wood, so long as you don't damage their trees to acquire it. The owners live on the property so that's nice if we had needed them for any reason. Just make sure you follow their rules (check out on the dot, no later than 11am, don't damage their trees, and be considerate of the environment.) They have 2 sections for camping, one of which allows groups and drinking. We weren't there getting hammered but it's nice to be able to drink your beer by the fire and not hide it like you would have to in a state park. Overall, I liked it. I would stay there again - it's easy to get to all the outdoor activities the town of Ohiopyle has to offer, even if it itself isn't next to a major river or hiking trails. read more

Stayed here in June 2016 with group of 5 guys. The key with this campground is to manage your expectations. It is rustic camping with limited fatalities. We stayed at a 5-9 person site that fit 4 cars, two 6 person tents, two 10x10 canopies, and still had enough space for a fire ring. It also could have fit a 3rd smaller 2 man tent. The porta pot was clean, but there was only 1 per 10 or so sites. This was fine for us as there was no one else camping near our site and it was basically our porta potty. However, if the campground was more full it would have been an issue. Overall this place was fine for a bunch of guys who just want a place to camp and stay while they do other stuff in ohiopyle. I do not think I would have taken my family however as they would need more to do at the site. My only real complaint is the only place I could find to get water was very far away. read more

I booked a site at this campground months in advance of a summer rafting trip with my buddies. When one of the members of my group fell ill (surgery a month before the camping/ rafting weekend), I was forced to reschedule the weekend (not cancel) several weeks later than the original date. The reschedule proved to be no issue for the rafting company, who politely accommodated my request. Scarlet Knob, on the other hand, refused to return my phone calls and instead sent me a rude email informing me of their "no refund no way" policy. Attached to the e-mail was a scan of a their clerk's handwritten note indicating that she informed me of their policy. The staff is rude and I would recommend against dealing with them in the future on that simple principle. read more

MUST SEE IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN SCOUTING ! The owner has a personal "museum" of scouting memorabilia including almost 1000 neckerchiefs that have been hand carved - wow. Make sure you ask them to turn on the lights - the "museum" is bigger than it looks from the front of the building. As for all the haters that have commented on this campground - look, if you want a hotel room - go get one. We stayed there two nights with our scout troop in a group sight that was very level and very private (site 68) and could have easily handled 15-20 tents if we had needed them. We could not even see another site from our location and were very happy with the service we received. Yes, it is a rocky wooded area - but so is everything else in that area. We will consider this our "go to" campground when going to this area in the future. read more

Terrible place....When we arrived older gentlemen behind the counter in the office was carving something out of wood and the younger gentlemen was sitting there playing on his phone....The older gentlemen got up and gave us the look as if we where bothering him and shouldn't be there... The younger gentlemen was still playing on his phone and refused to accept the fact we where in there... When the older gentlemen was trying to explain what they had to offer he really had no clue what he was talking about and just wanted us out of there... I asked if we could look around first because we didn't know if we wanted to stay or not and he said that's not a problem but still wanted our information told him we will do that if we wanted to stay when we came back.... When we walked out we heard him tell the younger gentlemen "The customer is always right my ass, if they don't like it here get out." ......So instead of looking around we left and went to the state park where everyone was a lot nicer and kinder....... read more

NEVER AGAIN!!! This was the sh*tiest campground I've ever been to... and the owner is a deranged scam artist!! Interesting how the public toilets that flush don't provide soap. The coin operated showers and metal holes he calls toilets were pretty hysterical... as well as laden with bugs, rust, grime and general grossness. Late hours were not enforced, as a group across from us blasted music until about 2 AM, and than a little again at 5 AM. Yet interestingly enough, WE get spoken to the following morning for using the fire ring right next to our camp site seeing as the one provided for us was filled to the brim with ash and burned beer cans from the previous campers--and to top it off, the owner made a big show of "checking OUR campsite" so that we could leave when this CLEARLY wasn't done prior to our entry! His excuse? "Well there were only 4 beer cans." As if there should've been ANY in there!! He actually wanted to charge us for using the next fire pit over but instead settled on keeping our deposit. A deposit? FOR WHAT?? In case we destroy all the supplies that WE brought? I think the whole thing was a big scam. I've never come across someone with such poor customer service skills. It is no wonder there were only 2-3 other sites being used at the time. Never have I been made to feel like an errant child on a vacation. Bear in mind, we are all pushing 30, if not over it, some married and with kids. Owner cared more about squeezing us for every penny he could than potentially having repeat customers. What a disgusting excuse for a business owner. I wish I saw these other reviews before we booked. read more

GO ELSEWHERE!!!! Every year, my cousins and I go on a group camping trip to reconnect and catch up. The past two years, we have gone to scarlet knob...making three total stays there for me. Each time, I am more frustrated and unimpressed by the way the proprietors act, the condition of the place in general, and the overall disregard for the customers. In our most recent stay, i was again thoroughly dissapointed. They advertised hot showers...but they are pay showers...and THEY ARE NOT HOT! I pumped a few dollars into the thing thinking I needed to just run the cold through the line, but to no avail. I inquired as to the cold water issue at the office and I was insulted. I guess wanting to take a hot shower after cool rainy couple of days was too much to ask? The price is high compared to just about every other non-resort campground I have ever been to, and you get little for your cash. Picnic table was filthy, fire ring...wait, no I meant rock pile had years of others' ashes and garbage piled in it. the porta john was very full and strong smelling and our stay was not during a busy weekend/holiday. while walking around and picking sticks for kindling, we noticed that others must have made the same observation about the johns...there were no fewer than 8 piles of feces in the woods. the army corps campgrounds at tub run and outflow are just a short drive from ohiopyle and facilities are much nicer and actually are maintained. read more

You get what you pay for. We knew we would need 2 sites, as we had 7 adults and 3 young children. When we arrived, we realized they placed us at sites with no water or electric. When I asked to be moved, they said "we don't allow side by side camping". Umm - what? We are at a site right now and we have people next to us. "Yes, but they're not with your group". If you're next to people you know, you will stomp down the vegetation. I get they're trying to preserve it - especially since all the sites are rock (good luck with your tent stakes). After driving around the campground (and YES you need an SUV/truck, roads are terrible and rocky) I saw there were W/E sites across from one another (no vegetation tracking would happen)...but they didn't budge. Even after I explained we had toddlers and it would make our experience much more enjoyable - and our walk to the bathrooms much shorter. I was not happy. The place wasn't even close to being booked up, port-a-holes are dirty and not sure when they've last been cleaned (and its Labor Day, come on guys). Stayed at State park 3 years ago - I'll go back there next time. Holiday weekend at Scarlett knob required 3 night minimum, I think we will be checking out early... We spoke to other families who left on Saturday morning and some who came in Saturday afternoon and learned they didn't pay the 3 night minimum. We went to the office to ask if we could be refunded (as we will only stay 2 nights) and they said "no, if you make a reservation, you must pay for the entire weekend"...so people who drive up only pay for the nights they stay. And the lady is rude. Very rude. Alright. I'm done. Don't make a reservation or a "drive-by" stop. It's not worth it. They have several sites that were open and we are stacked on top of each other like roaches. Read the reviews. Stay away. read more

All the below complaints are irrelevant, you are CAMPING, not glamping. I love that this place is primitive and you can find some very isolated spots. Mostly all of them are shaded so it's always cooler than when you leave the campground. The owner was super nice, even had an adapter for our camper that we had lost and let us borrow to hook up electricity, life saver. My one and only complaint and reason for 4 stars, is that we stayed in the family section where quiet time is supposed to be 9pm. That was NOT enforced..I was kept up every night by the rude Middle Aged partying group beside us. Maybe a drive around the grounds to make sure people are quiet by at least 11! Other than that, a great stay and we always keep coming back! read more

Not too bad. Absolutely sufficient for adults that need a place to spend a few nights between hiking, rafting, etc. Less suitable for families with children that spend large part of a day in the campground - but I never understood why people did that. I was late to make reservations (Memorial weekend - one has to think far in advance), and this was the only campground that I was able to get. I read the reviews and prepared for the worst. It was not that bad. I would give it 3.5 - between 3 and 4. The infamous pit toilets were pretty decent, as far as pit toilets go. I would not take a 3-5 years old child there, but then if I felt like using a flush toilet, I could walk to the office. It is not far from the family camp sites. The sites themselves were what one can expect in this area. That is, there are few flat spots in those woods. So what the owners did, they dug into the hill on one side of the road, and moved the resulting dirt and rocks to the other side. So that most camp sites on our side were more or less mud mounds. Ours was one of the smallest, but sufficient for 2 people. I can imagine that eventually these mounds get eroded by rains, with the surface getting less flat and rocks showing up. But it was decent while we were there. And they are in the woods, which is always nice (not like those campgrounds where they set tents on a large lawn, in full view of each other). I agree that the owners' refusal to let people choose a camp site can be annoying, but we were there at a popular time, so there was not much to choose from anyway. In a rainy weather the roads could be less muddy. Schlepping in the mud to the shower was nasty. And the fire wood that they sold us was not dry enough. Not to mention that the fire starter was also wet and sticky (yes, it was not 2 solid sticks, but some sticky substance that looked like crap. We were able to light it eventually, but only after we had some fire burning.) The fire wood 100 yards down the road was much better. As an unexpected bonus, our phones worked pretty well. All in all, I do not mind coming there again. read more

HORRIBLE PEOPLE!!!! My Boyfriend and I planned a rafting, zip lining and camping trip with our kids 2 weeks ago. The morning we were to arrive May 16th, my father past away unexpectedly, . We called the camp ground that morning to reschedule our trip for a couple weeks later, but were told there was a no refund policy with no exceptions...I even offered to bring a copy of my fathers death certificate...but that didn't even phase them. I was appalled by how uncaring and rude these so called humans reacted to my situation. We didn't ask for anything back, just a different weekend. We rescheduled with the rafting company and zip lining company with no problems and they were very understanding. I wish I would have read these reviews before attempting to camp at this hell hole. Called Benners Meadow Campground to reschedule our trip and they couldn't have been more helpful and polite. After doing some research this campground had far more amenities than Scarlet Knob and the price was much cheaper. I would give Scarlet Knob "0" Stars, but for this review to be seen, I had to put at least "1"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
