It pains me to write this because Schat's Bishop is my jam and I was so excited to see one when driving through Ukiah on my way to the Redwoods. My husband and I stopped in for a bagel on friday morning. The first thing was the service. The young man who took our order had a sad grumpy face with kinda of an attitude. He clearly didn't want to be there. We ordered two bagels and a side of sausage. I enjoyed the Sasame bagel. However, it came out with very little cream cheese (we are talking not even covering the entire surface of the bagel) and when I asked for a little more cream cheese (you know just to cover the surface) he charged me 75 cents for a little 1 oz side. I didn't need that much more nor should we have had to pay for it extra when a decent amount would have covered the whole surface. My husband got the "pizza" and said it was the worst pizza bagel he ever had (he orders them whenever they have that favor at any bagel shop). The sausage was also the worst ever. Tasted awful and I didn't even finish them they were that bad. I would return for a Sesame bagel and maybe some of the pastries that looked good. My experience at Schat's was extremely disappointing due to the poor customer service. Jessica and another employee with glasses were rude from the moment I walked in. I was not greeted, and throughout the interaction they seemed unwilling to answer questions or discuss the products. Their attitudes made me feel unwelcome. To make matters worse, my order was made incorrectly. When I went back inside to have it corrected, they responded with even more attitude, despite the mistake being on their end. The one bright spot was a kind employee with a darker complexion who consistently had a positive attitude. She stepped in to help after noticing how I was being treated, and it was disappointing to see her coworkers respond rudely to her as well. I hope Schat's takes customer service more seriously and invests in hiring and training employees who treat customers with respect. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I cannot recommend this location. read more

We were excited to stop here after a three-hour drive from the Bay Area because everyone raves about this place, but our visit started off on the wrong foot. The girl working the counter on Saturday, July 19th at 2:35 PM had a rude attitude from the moment we walked up. I guess we were the "lucky" ones, because every other staff member seemed friendly. We ordered a red velvet cupcake (easily the best thing we tried) but she put it in the box sideways it seem) a walnut brownie (dry), and a fruit tart (just okay). After every item we ordered, she snapped back with a rude "What?!" as if she couldn't hear us yet somehow managed to suddenly change her tone when it was time for us to tip. The lady with tattoos serving me was soooo friendly and attentive! Great customer service. Coffee was alright, I'll probably get a different drink next time but the burrito was huge! Buzzing happy place with a lot of locals coming in to relax and enjoy each others company and food. Pastries look great though a bit over the top for me - hard to eat. Cream puffs are WAY too much cream. Bagels are standard, a bit tough. Cookies are very sweet. If you like that, awesome. Cappuccino - week but then this is not a coffee shop. The food and coffee here is AMAZING. The only thing that sucks is that the service here is usually pretty bad. I've worked in busy service industry settings for many years, so I totally get the difference between "I'm stressed out and just a little short right now" and "I hate people and everything about this job". Not going to single one employee out, but every time I go in, this one particular employee is SO mean, it almost makes me cry. One time they even made fun of my name (made a disgusted face and said "what??!") and rolled their eyes when I told them how to spell it . Every time I try to order a few things, it's like they want me to stop at just one by hurrying up to the payment portion. They make you line up and pass by the pastry cases before you order (what a great marketing plan). Not sure what I was expecting. Maybe more availability? I guess ordering online is the way to go and this is the only place for people to get a decent, quickish, breakfast in this tiny town. I just got a pastry after being denied 5 other things, due to selling out. It was a cinnamon tigers tail type twist and it was light but good on a road trip. I felt like I got here early but I guess not. Lattes take a long time to get. I just got an americano and some lady walked out because it took too long, but I was killing time so didn't bother me. Maybe because there was no monkey pull apart bread? Okay I'm a little salty about that one. But I understand this place operates different than those other ones ;) Honestly, there was so much to look at and it was all very cute so I'm glad there was a bit of a line to look at all the adorable pastries. We both ordered a sandwich, and we also ordered a bowl of soup (chicken and rice). The sandwich was small, well, we are big eaters so if you're big eaters you might want to make sure to order the full sandwich. We could tell the ingredients were fresh. They were very tasty and even a non sandwich lover like me thought their sandwich was really tasty. The soup was light and tasted homemade. Their bakery items looked delicious, but we only had time to try their vanilla cupcake. It was good, soft and not overly sweet. A great dessert to round up our short lunch stop. The dining area was nice, they have a bookshelf full of games for the little ones to keep them entertained, though we were late to notice it. We were flabbergasted when we found this place. Our first choice (based on "doing our own research") was closed on the weekend. So we wandered the charming streets of Ukiah to find another option. When we came to Schat's, we had a good feeling about it. Our instincts were spot on! First of all, a pro tip: Don't stand by the bakery case before you place your order! If you linger too long near the cupcakes and tortes, you will be taking something home that you may not have planned for. (Should that happen to you, it won't be terrible, but you may have to confess to My Fitness Pal.) We came for lunch, but if we had arrived for breakfast, we might have simply stayed put for both meals. It was not only our sandwiches (which were delicious and generous) but also the charming staff, and the complete commitment to quality and legacy. The place was founded early in the last century, and is clearly going strong... feeding the downtown workers in the vicinity of the local courthouse, but also visitors who know good food when they taste it.
