Our daughter spent several years thriving at Japhet School. She earned nearly straight A's,…read morecherished her classmates, and fully embraced the community. We believed we were in the right place -- until her mental health began to decline and the school failed to act. In January 2025, her grades dropped noticeably, and her pediatrician, counselor, and prior neuropsychologist all recommended accommodations to support her suspected autism and rapidly progressing anxiety. These recommendations were brought directly to the Head of School and her teacher -- and were met with delay, deflection, and silence. Despite presenting medical documentation, past accommodations, and a collaborative proposal, no meaningful steps were taken -- not even acknowledgment. For months our daughter struggled through 5+ hours of homework per night, experienced escalating distress, and began exhibiting severe trichotillomania. We asked for urgent follow-up, confirmed her suffering, and even laid out specific accommodations recommended by her care team. The school's response? Vague reassurances, inaction, significant delays, and ultimately -- a statement that they were not resourced to help and we therefore were forced to withdraw her with 7 weeks left in the academic year. Her final days at Japhet were devastating for her and me as her parent. Staff completely ignored our emails. Her friends were never told she was leaving. She was sent home with hours of homework knowing it would never be graded and despite confirmed withdrawal due to mental health. There was no closure. No sense of RELIABILITY, HUMILITY, or RESPECT not for her as a learner, nor for us as a family. Japhet often speaks of its 18 character qualities -- initiative, courage, gratitude, justice, respect, reliability, joy, humility, peace, and more. But in our experience, these values were words on a wall, not principles in practice. When our child needed understanding, flexibility, and human connection, zero compassion was shown despite the fact that she was unraveling inside their very own walls. We share this to caution other families of neurodivergent children, especially those with autism +/- PDA profiles. If your child requires flexibility, emotional safety, accommodations or genuine partnership -- be prepared. Our experience was marked by neglect, poor communication, and a striking lack of sensitivity. Japhet may not leave students behind academically -- but emotionally, we were left entirely alone.

My son used to go to a Montessori for two years prior so I was wondering if he would be able to transition well and to my delight, he is thriving and loves his teachers and loves going to school. My son's student class is close knit where each student knows everyone and supports everyone. About 75% are involved in athletics and/or other extracurricular activities. They are true to the Catholic Faith and support many religious based activities such as the March in DC and World Youth Day with the Pope. My son loves his experience as he begins his Junior year. If negatives ratings were available, I'd give them -10. 1. Discriminates: My daughter was kicked out of the program because she experienced two prior febrile seizures, both related to viral infections. a. Federal laws that prohibit schools from discriminating from children with disabilities, even though our child does not have a disability. b. Page 3 of their Parent Handbook 2022-2023, under the "Allergies / Medication Packet" section speaks about seizures and it goes on to advise that "together we will create an action plan"), c. My husband and I met with Ms. Nancy for the initial interview and walkthrough. She did not ask any questions regarding medical history. When we asked, she said paperwork would be sent before school started for us to complete. Also, I met with Ms. Suzanne and Ms. Christina before school started and told them our entire experience and we discussed a care plan, where Ms. Suzanne appeared overwilling to administer a care plan, but Ms. Christina seemed not fully on board. In the end, Ms. Nancy tried to infer that we hid our daughter's medical history from her, as if we would put our daughter's life at risk, to attend this transactional school. 2. Unorganized & Unprepared: Before school started, I called for the paperwork, they were unorganized and said that the packages would be mailed. They were never mailed. I met with Ms. Suzanne and my daughter's teacher Ms. Christina. Ms. Suzanne was assuring that they could assist in the situation of a febrile seizure lasting longer than the standard time. Ms. Suzanne said they had another child in the school with similar medication on file. Ms. Christina said she had never responded to one before but agreed, which seemed only due to Ms. Suzanne's assurance. Because of Ms. Christina's reaction I later followed up with her and also other teachers and Teacher Assistants in the school who would be with our daughter before and after school. None were experienced and seemed uncomfortable with the conversation. 3. Unwilling: After submitted information and help video Ms. Christina and Ms. Nancy determined that they were unwilling to administer care. Febrile Seizures can happen with a high fever during an illness, affecting 2-5% of children in the U.S. between 6 months and 5 years of age. 4. Transactional: I tried to negotiate with Ms. Nancy and also Ms. Christina regarding the care plan, as a new parent I wasn't sure if my requests were extreme or not. Ms. Christina decided that she would not provide the care plan.. Ms. Nancy was unwilling to compromise in any way and only said no to any and all requests that I asked without even hearing them out. I also asked if my daughter could return after a year of being cleared and having no experiences with illnesses and she also said no. Furthermore, once they said that we could no longer participate in the program, it was like we became public enemy #1, even though my husband and I remained calm, patient and professional throughout the entire experience. The staff was very rude and short. 5. Mischievous: Ms. Nancy provided me to a Tuition Rate sheet that quoted us our weekly rate, after disputing the prepaid charges which they refused to return I realized that: a. They were charging us a different weekly rate than Ms. Nancy told us. b. In going through the refund process, they also tried to charge us for more days than we attended. They tried to charge us for more days than we attending. Saying that attendance showed that my daughter had attended before their actual school start date, that's written on their own website. c. We purchased close to $300 in school supplies, when we were removed after 6 days of school, they return only a portion of our supplies and most of the items were generic when we purchased branded products. d. Getting a refund required several hours of our time and money. e. They declined my request for my refund more than once 6. Smells of Urine: When you walk into the facility on a regular basis, it smells of urine. And on more than one occasion there was no hand soap in the bathrooms for the children.

Waldorf is new to me but love the community and imagination based style of play, learning and life. They have so many traditions and events throughout the year that are magical. Nature based and a dim calm environment. The have a unique rhthym of the day that you won't find at just any school. They play outside, feed chickens, sing, open play, snack, story time, art, and so much more. I am looking forward to being part of the Acorn family for the next few years!

They get to take morning walks in nature, learn fun songs, feed chickens (and now pet the bunnies), learn how to chop vegetables, bake bread, learn finger crafts, molding beeswax, wet on wet painting, and everything about is natural. Lots of wooden toys to play with indoors & they get to wear cozy slippers, just like at home! The teachers are so comforting to the children when they need a little bit of love. My son needed that. He's a shy child but, his teachers told me he was a top participant in his classes. They encouraged him and praised him and also assisted him to use his skills in unique ways. For example, an art project for my son is daunting. He gets very stressed. He doesn't have the coordination to cut and paste or anything intricate. His teacher worked with him and allowed him to use his computer skills instead. So he was producing videos and power point presentations in place of some of the assigned work. This entire year, I knew his teachers cared about him, and his grades and wellbeing. I am sure this is also a reflection of great leadership on the administration side of things as well! Nate went from struggling last year in virtual school to shining brightly! With his math and science teachers' encouragement he applied, and was accepted, into Utica's Center for Math Science and Technology! He also managed to get on the all A honor roll! Thank a teacher! This school is as exceptional, as the rest in the district. When we sold our house back in April, our number 1 criteria for finding a new house was that it HAD to be in the Utica district. We bought a house in Slate August, just days before the start of the new year- and it WAS in the Utica district. So close to our old house that our kids did not even have to switch school. The teachers are amazing and willing to help and go above and beyond 110%! They are willing to meet at your convenience- if you ever need to talk or if you see your child struggling. The inside of the schools are always immaculate- even if there is 100s of kids spending 8 hours plus inside. I can't say enough good things about Utica Community Schools. I'm so pleased with the education my kids are receiving!

Enrolling at Crescent Academy was an overwhelming experience. Definitely a culture shock going from…read morea class of 15 to several classes with 20+ students in each classroom. The first graders have their own trailer with over 6 classrooms, just for 1st graders. I thought this was great for children to develop social skills and building relationships with other students. Crescent Academy offers extracurricular activities to include girl's scouts, boy scouts, music, soccer, etc. In addition to activities, they also offer academic assistance for students that may be falling below their academic level. I gather from staff's involvement with the programs they offer, they really care. As it relates to the staff building relationships with the parents, I do see an effort being made since the last time I wrote my review. My daughter participated in the girls scout program, she was a daisy. She had so much fun and there were so many events, trips and meetings to keep the girls just as engaged. She will definitely be participating next year as a brownie. Overall, I feel confident in the academic program Crescent Academy offers. We are looking forward to next year.
