***Please note this review is only of the structure, though lodging is available, as well.***…read more We just had to stop along Fremont Street on our way out of town to visit this structure that purportedly housed Wyatt Earp for a time during his residency in Tombstone. If so, any Earps on the porch during the McLaury/ Clanton funeral procession may have, indeed, seen the hearses pass by on their way to Boot Hill. (The type of collision between cinematic fiction and historical lore that I just love to ponder.) The modest structure and grounds are in good repair and match well with similar little dwellings throughout the area. Adjacent to the house is a statue of Tombstone's most famous lawman surrounded by a low wrought iron fence. The property itself is enclosed by another white picket fence, and there's even a horse perpetually hitched in the front yard. (A tribute to Wyatt's racing horse, Dick Naylor?) Barriers do not impede visitors' ability to view or photograph the space in its entirety from multiple angles. If you have visited Tombstone, you know that high walls or barriers obstruct many attractions from those unwilling to pay a fee (i.e. the O. K. Corral gunfight site, Rose Tree Museum, Bird Cage Theatre, etc.); this is free! Apparently, the house can be booked as lodging accommodations, so I doubt there are any public tours due to interior modernization and the comfort of guests. For this reason, I appreciate the proprietor's willingness to accommodate the history buffs and looky loos (like myself) that undoubtedly trudge around the site's periphery daily. It's a nice little quick-stop with some exceptional photo opportunities.

It is set up only to stop traffic going north and is a smaller checkpoint compared to the one I encountered on I-10 in Las Cruces a couple of days ago https://www.yelp.com/biz/us-border-patrol-checkpoint-las-cruces?hrid=NWXhPi_bNCorlz5VnGnDQA but it is just as "legal." As I mentioned in that review, the Supreme Court has ruled that as long as the interrogation is "a brief and limited inquiry into residence status," then the government is permitted to violate the letter and spirit of the Bill of Rights. Regardless of the Fifth Amendment and your right to remain silent, you are still compelled to answer the government agent of your immigration or citizenship status and can not leave until they are satisfied. If you're stopped, start your video recorder, answer the questions as minimally as possible, and hopefully you get to be on your way with as minimal a violation of your civil rights as possible. Honestly, this is one of the sillier checkpoints I've experienced in my road trips and four-wheel…read moretravels. A common misconception is the wonder of why "border" checkpoints aren't a lot closer to the border. Tombstone is a good 45 miles from the border town of Naco, Sonora... so what gives? Well, it turns out there is a method to the madness. Evidently, it is relatively easier to surreptitiously cross the border on foot than by going through the actual border checkpoint; however, the 60+ mile walk to Benson on I-10 (for example) is a lot tougher than getting a ride for a good portion once you're in the US. As such, many Border Patrol checkpoints set up shop 20-40 miles from the border to check for folks who aren't hoofing it all the way, and have found a seat in a vehicle through prearrangement or providence. Makes sense, I guess. On our way out of Tombstone, heading north to the 10 on our way back to SoCal, we drove through this checkpoint. The four cars ahead of us were stopped for a few questions about the citizenship of the occupants, and waved through. No fewer than 6 cameras and other electronic devices seemed to capture our plates, Jeep, and faces from several angles, but no different than the little cameras on just about every intersection in our hometown. We endured the same 10 second inquiry from the agent, and were quickly bid a very nice rest of the day by the dude in aviator sunglasses as we were waved through. I considered being a smart-aleck and saying something in Lithuanian to the guy, but honestly I was just tired and not looking forward to the long drive home in the dark. In the grand scheme of things for a road-tripping family of US Citizens, it's probably a positive thing to have these guys and gals out patrolling in the vicinity. While it's not their chief directive, I assume that if we were experiencing car trouble or a medical emergency, their law enforcement mission would quickly shift to protect and serve. Regardless of your politics or beliefs, it seems this group is here to stay for the time being. Like most checkpoints, there's a circuitous route around it on other roadways and thoroughfares. Me? No reason not to charge through, tip my cap, smile, and put the hammer down with these guys in the rearview.

The woman who was on the front desk that day was so welcoming and helpful, and cheerfully set up a temporary hold on the mail while we were packing up our old house in Prescott to move. While we were there, the carrier on our route was in the back room collecting mail to be delivered, and the woman at the front desk called him out to introduce us. He said "Wait a minute, I just saw something came in for you today!" and handed us the packet of information our insurance company mailed to the new address. Personal service at its best! These folks have never failed to be accommodating, cheerful, helpful, and thorough in their service. They even helped us work through forwarding issues with our old PO in Prescott. We thank them for their service and kindness!
