As I was searching for my dry cleaner's hours the other day, I saw the five star reviews for Schleppers in the results. My next thought was the awful state of my third floor room. It's supposed to be a guestroom, but it turned into the place where we dumped all of the stuff to make room for the new baby. Electronics, clothes that no longer fit, linens, every present bag from new baby well wishers... Not to mention your typical "Just put it on the third floor" stuff like luggage, the printer, way too many shoes... You get the idea. Laurie came over at 11:00. We caught up and I showed her around the house that she helped us so much with. By 2:00 she had filled up her car with items to donate and filled up my patio with trash to go out. Three hours and I had my third floor back!! It looked better than it did when Laurie helped us move in 3 years ago. All this while I took care if my daughter and ate lunch. I'm not sure how I even came across the Yelp reviews of Schleppers, because I didn't know what concierge services were until I read about them here, but somehow or other I came across this very page a while back and filed the information away in my brain for later. Later was today. I had a very short time in which to do a lot of packing, organizing, and cleaning of a very messy apartment, and I was feeling completely overwhelmed. I'd been living out of suitcases for several months and had gotten to a point where I was never quite sure whether I was packing or unpacking, and I had bags and boxes that I was afraid to open. Reader, I hired her. I thought I was going to have to pull an all-nighter. But here it is not yet 11pm, and I can see the floor again, the last load of laundry is rattling around in the dryer, the trash and recycling are out on the street, and Laurie has just left with four bags full of things to donate to the thrift store and one bag of things to sell for me on Craigslist. At $35 an hour, this was a steal. I didn't even quite know what I was asking Laurie to do, but she knew, somehow, and she magicked the mess away in six hours. We even had fun! It can be a bit disconcerting to have a stranger wade through all the evidence of one's disorganization and clutter. Laurie could not have been more professional or less judgmental. She didn't bat an eye as we went through all sorts of things from underwear to unpaid bills, and she listened carefully to my answers about what I wanted to do with various items. She kept in mind the various factors that affected my decisions-- sentimental value, future travel plans, etc.-- and quickly became able to extrapolate so that she hardly needed to ask me anything. It was like having a super-organized mindreader at my right hand. I'm already coming up with things I'm going to ask Laurie for help with in the future. Seriously, if you have a pile of stuff somewhere that you've been afraid to tackle, throw some Christmas cash at your New Year's resolution and get Schleppers to help you. I kept thinking about the need to hire a wedding coordinator throughout the planning process, but didn't start looking into it until a month before the wedding. I contacted a few companies ranked high for a day-of-coordinator and was completely blown away by the rates. So, I emailed Laurie and asked if there was any way she could help out. Unfortunately for me, she was booked on my wedding day. I went back and asked if she had any recommendations of other people that could help out, and she recommended Matt and Joan, who she's worked with on other projects. I gladly accepted. From the start, Laurie requested a ton of details to make sure everything was clear and no detail was missed. I thought I had everything organized, but it was clear from answering her email that I was missing a ton of small details. For a few days before the wedding, they followed up with a few reminders and additional questions to make sure we were on the same page. The day before the wedding, I did a walk through at the venue with Matt and Joan. It took an hour in total, but was worth every minute as they fully understood what I wanted. A large part of the coordinating was arranging everything for the tables and all other decorations and chair/table setups for the entire wedding. Matt and Joan did a spectacular job and made it look beautiful and exactly the vision I hoped I would have. Throughout the wedding, they were consistently there when I needed them, and always friendly and helpful to work with. After the wedding they kindly boxed up all the decorations, which made it very easy for picking up the next day. They even worked well with the very difficult woman running the venue who apparently put the ceremony chairs in a seating arrangement that I didn't ask for. In the end, i am SO GRATEFUL for using Schleppers and the help of Laurie, Matt, and Joan. They were an enormous part of the success of my wedding - everyone kept talking about how gorgeous everything was, and I owe them a huge thanks for making the day so seamless and special. I found Laurie via Schlepper's when I needed her most. A few years ago, I had just moved in with my partner, was starting a business, had a full time job which was stressful, a home renovation I was handling remotely, etc. I finally made the first step to realize I needed help, then I Was lucky enough to find Laurie via a Google search. Laurie helped me with the following activities: food shopping (some things you want from Acme, some things from Trader Joe's, some things from Whole Foods), simple to complicated errands, handling contractors for odd jobs (she hired, used her contacts, etc.), picked up mail, picked up dry cleaning, did liquor and beer runs, cleaned out a closet and organized it, organized our personal files and shredded what was no longer needed after I reviewed it, helped with a gardener, helped me plan a huge 40th birthday party for my partner (this was a huge deal, with DJ, catering, etc.), helped with cleaning services, both hiring and managing. I'm sure I'm missing about 30 other things Laurie has helped us with over the years as well. Laurie was always dependable, understood simple tasks, and would even surprise us at times with picking up things she thought we would like based on our tastes and suggestions from other clients, whether it would be a type of wine or a food item. We loved that! The way Laurie came in and out of the house was so easy, she was like family and after she was there to do her thing she disappeared as fast as she arrived, which fit our busy schedules. Also, Laurie, as a former concierge, knows the restaurant scene in Philly like no other, and can give great advice to new and existing Philadelphians on the latest and greatest and would offer her recommendations if asked. The monthly billing also makes life so simple. Although my life has slowed down some since, I still know I can call Laurie in a bind. I often tell my global work colleagues about Laurie. Since I work with men mainly, they are always surprised at the notion at first, then they realize it's genius and can't wait to find a 'Laurie' where they live and share the idea with their wives. Especially when they find out it is not expensive as you think. I have always believed you actually save money in the long run since if Laurie combines tasks with other client tasks, you benefit in the end, plus the value of your own time and gas. Honestly, it's a 'no brainer' if you are as busy as I am, and honestly, who isn't. Give it a try, you won't regret it. read more

I am a healthier happier person now that we have Laurie. Healthier in that my daughter and I eat healthful foods at every meal because we always have fresh groceries in the refrigerator. Holy cow! Laurie gets it done!! I needed help with my wedding day, and the typical "day of coordinators" that I found were really expensive, and weren't willing to pick things up and drop them off at the end of the night. Laurie did this and so much more. She has experience with wedding planning and coordinating, so in addition to picking up *everything* at my house and bringing it to the venue, she set up placecards, made sure everyone was on schedule, made sure I always had a glass of wine (ha), and basically ran around making sure everything was perfect. We are just beginning to come down from the cloud we were on from our son and daughter in law's wedding. They wanted a DIY wedding that reflected their vision and their values. Wow! When I first called Laurie to ask to her to help with my project (receiving a bbq meal shipped from Texas, reheating it, picking up sides and delivering it all as a surprise to a colleague on a Friday night), I thought she is going to figure out a way to say "no" to my project - too many moving parts, coordination, off-hours delivery, etc. To my delight, she said, let's do it! And, she was amazing! She went out of her way to recommend a way to spice up (improve) what I was delivering. She was flexible on timing when the shipment was delayed, although she got it all reheated and delivered on time with, apparently, a huge smile!! Poor job as wedding day coordinator. Essentially, the business model that Schleppers Concierge Philadelphia (Laurie) uses is fundamentally flawed. It is not possible to both be schlepping (moving items back and forth between locations) and to also be a wedding day coordinator (being politely in the ear of vendors, bridal party, and family). Laurie did a great job of bringing us the objects that we wanted, where we wanted, and when we wanted; unfortunately this creates a vacuum and then there is nobody left with the timeline in their hand to orchestrate all the moving pieces at the venue before and during the wedding. Even more unfortunate was that when it was possible to do both schlepping and also wedding day coordinating, the feedback that we as the wedding couple received from our vendors, bridal party, and family was that Laurie was not polite in her interactions with them. Neither the bride nor the groom are bridezillas which makes this entire situation that much more frustrating because even with our flexibilities we were still left consistently disappointed and with big logistical headaches. We greatly hesitate to recommend Laurie as a wedding day coordinator to any other wedding couple. It would make much more sense to hire a seasoned coordinator, who then in turn has their own assistant that will do the schlepping of objects in order for the coordinator to be able to focus and keep things moving smoothly. read more

I read about Laurie in a wedding profile in the Inquirer and hired her as a "day of" coordinator for my daughter's wedding She also ended up helping us with the rehearsal dinner and with planning the timing of the various events at the wedding. Laurie made it so my husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law I could actually enjoy our own party! Instead of running around trying to deal with all the crazy things that come up unexpectedly during a wedding as well as making sure that everything from cueing the wedding party when to walk during the ceremony, toasts, etc. came off on time,we were eating dinner, talking to loved ones, and DANCING!! She was the glue that made the whole thing work. It seemed she was everywhere, doing whatever it took to make things go smoothly and our guests were wowed. Highly recommended. read more

I hired Laurie to do day-of coordination for my wedding. She was absolutely amazing! I seriously don't think we could have done it without her. She's very very reasonably priced, but that is truly not a reflection of her quality- just a great deal! I can't imagine not hiring her (in fact, several of my bridesmaids want to hire her for their upcoming weddings). For example, my June 1st wedding wound up being 91 degrees (heat wave!), and the air conditioner broke at my venue that morning. While they got it fixed, she came prepared with mini fans for me and my bridesmaids, serious life-savers. There were countless other little things that needed doing or fixing that day, and she took care of them all immediately and gracefully. No muss, no fuss. Laurie is sweet, easy to talk to and a really hard worker that just gets things done. She took care of everything from getting all of our 'stuff' to the venue, to getting people on busses at the end of the night and making sure all the gifts got to my house. I really didn't have to worry about anything or even be aware of all the details and logistics that day and was able to just enjoy my day. read more

I don't usually write reviews, and as someone who uses Yelp quite often, I know to take each review with a grain of salt, knowing that the only people who review are either very happy or very unhappy. So, the reader is welcome to read this review with perspective. That said, the service I saw rendered to the bride was so poor I really felt I had to warn others who were considering Ms. Buckman's services. 1. My friend hired her as a "day of" coordinator for her wedding. She arrived for her day of work at a formal wedding in sweats, and proceeded to coordinate and be seen in that attire, which I found very unprofessional. At least put on real clothing if you are going to be present at such a formal affair. People go to their desk jobs wearing more appropriate attire. 2. As far as efficiency goes: she collected all of the money/checks from the bridesmaids for their hair/makeup for safe keeping on the busy day. I myself handed her a wad of cash and didn't think twice, expecting it to arrive safely in the bride's hands at a time less hectic. A few weeks later, the bride emailed us all to ask us to cancel our checks, as Laurie had put the $1000+ dollars of cash and checks in the hotel room REFRIGERATOR since there was not a safe in the room, and verbally told the bride that she had done so and to "remember to get it" before checking out. Of course in the chaos of her wedding, the last thing on her mind was to check the refrigerator in her suite and she left without it. Of course, all the money was lost when she called to ask the hotel to please check the room. 3. Lastly, she was not there at any time when the bride was in pinch. She kept "collecting things" that the bride had delegated to others in order to alleviate responsibility, but then was not on hand whenever the product collected was needed (example: mother of the bride was given the "Mrs." hanger that was needed to photograph the wedding dress, but Laurie took it and wasn't even on site when the photog and the bride were shooting.) She also wasn't on site when we were locked out of the suite so the bridesmaids went around the property looking for someone with a key instead of spending time with the bride. Besides the $1000+ dollars that she left in the fridge, the other stuff was small and didn't make or break the day. but, isn't the small stuff the whole point of having a wedding coordinator? So you don't have to deal with that kinda stuff on the day of your wedding? . She brought double-sided tape and bobbi-pins, and that's great, but it certainly seemed like she caused more problems than she fixed. read more

Laurie Buckman was essential the day of our daughter's wedding, and I'm so glad friends recommended the need for a "day of" coordinator. I originally hadn't planned on having anyone to help. The caterer offered a full service coordinator of their own and I have lots of event planning experience. However, what Laurie offered was priceless - she was the one to take on last minutes changes and problems, keeping everyone on schedule, and nudging the photographer, the orchestra, and the caterer to stick to the timeline we had worked out together before hand. All the questions and issues went to her and I could relax and drink in the moment with my daughter, family, and guests without the stresses. Laurie had great ideas for things I hadn't considered like special grooming aids for the bathrooms, tricks for numbering the back of the reply cards so illegible replies could be identified, and brilliantly arranged for my daughter and new son-in-law to have a quiet moment after the service with a bit to eat before going on to the photographs and reception. She and I packed the hotel gift bags and she delivered them two days before, she brought lunch and drinks to the hotel for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, had an awesome bag of tricks to fix everything from tape to keep the dresses on shoulders, to creating trailing cans for the bride and groom's car when my husband forgot the "Just Married' signs. She packed up all our wine, beer, spirits, gifts and the cake shop's plates and stands at the end of the night, along with our family photos and all the other extras; arranged for the delivery of some of the floral arrangements to our hotel for the next day's breakfast; tipped the vendors when necessary, and brought everything belonging to us to our house the Monday after the wedding. It might seem like an unnecessary expense when money is flowing like water, but she was worth every single penny. I highly recommend Laurie's Schlepper service. read more
