They specialize in clocks, but have a large selection of artifacts and furniture from the 1700's-1800's, maybe even older if I looked at some of the plaques a little closer. Interesting, classy, ornate stuff. Not a typical small town antique shop, they seem to cater to bigger budgets. read more

You've probably passed Shmidt's while driving down US-12 a bunch of times and never given this red barn a second thought. Well, you should! I, too, had driven by it many times and never bothered to stop. However, I recently decided to give it a try, and it's one of the coolest antique stores I've been to. It's also huge compared to many of the smaller antique stores I've visited locally. Some local antique stores are a mish-mash of books and figurines and dishes, but the focus on Scmidt's is largely on furniture- big, heavy, beautifully carved wooden furniture. And there are rooms and rooms and rooms of it, and also an outdoor area with sculptures and a fountain. I'm not even big into antiquing and I could tell this place is a goldmine. I've got a couple of out-of-town friends who are big into antiques, and I know I'll be taking them to Schmidt's the next time they come to visit. read more

We have been buyers and sellers there at both monthly Friday night auctions and cataloged sales for 15 years. We have done well on both ends. Like at any auction house, the best items will bring the best prices. A Seller's quality items placed in cataloged ('gallery') auctions are protected by modest reserves (the opening bid). Unlike the largest auction house in the state, they pay promptly, and do not charge 'extra' fees or a 'no sale' fee. They have international market penetration through multiple bidding platforms. Monthly Friday night auctions are fast paced with no buyer's premium. Overall, you will not find a better auction house in the state of Michigan. read more

As a newbie to the auction world, I was VERY impressed with the warm welcome and unpressured time I was given to preview items for an upcoming auction. Don't know which Mr. Schmidt showed us around, but he was patient, funny, very informative and so very welcoming. Didn't make me feel (as a newbie) like I was wasting his time. Loved chatting with him! Other auction houses inject an air of exclusivity, "weeding out" those they assume aren't serious bidders. It's a very good shop, but the staff leads a little to be desired. One gentleman was very nice - the others all acted as if we bothered them, ignoring us completely while reading the paper and looking at their phones. Not a way to get customers, especially when your pieces on average are $1000 and higher. Fact is, if your into French provincial, dark European and massive, you'll like their stuff - if your like the rest of us and have no hope of fitting a 10 foot high x 8 foot long piece in their house, not so much. read more

Schmidt's Antiques auctioned off my 12 items on December15, 2017, and when I received my invoice is was terribly SHOCKED! Schmidt's gave my items away saying they were not well received. I have been collecting antiques for over 44 years and I know the value of fine antiques. Jay at Schmidt's Antiques sold my beautiful Bradley & Hubbard Lamp for $425.00 (then take off a commission fee of 35%),then he sold a beautiful pair of parlor chairs for $100.00. I thought this was a mistake. They gave my items AWAY!!!! In addition, at the auction there are no buyers premiums, so you can imagine how shocked I am that this company gave my items away. It was even more shocking when I spoke with Jay prior to Christmas and he said that everything of mine sold and that I would be Pleasantly Pleased with the outcome in price. This is a JOKE!!! I will never trust this company again, yet alone refer them to anyone. BEWARE! read more
