"Isn't UHWO like part of LCC or something?"…read more If you're a UHWO [University of Hawaii at West Oahu] student you hear this every single time you mention your school to someone. Lets bust some myths here, UHWO isn't part of LCC [Leeward Community College]. Although the campuses are close together, it is a completely different school than LCC. They offer bachelor's degrees in business. public administration, social sciences, elementary education, humanities. Things I love about UHWO: -Small class sizes. I've never had a teacher that didn't know me personally. I think it's easier to learn in a smaller group because you're able to ask questions and discuss things as a class. -Lots of online/night classes. A lot of people who attend UHWO work at least part time or have kids, so not all classes are on weekday mornings. There are also accelerated classes where you can go to class for 6 weeks on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Being able to work with students schedules let a lot of people come back to school and I really like having older people in my classes. They're always more serious about learning and aren't afraid to lead discussions and ask questions, so I feel like I learn more too. -Tight knit community. The school is so small that once I took a few classes, I always knew a couple of people in my new classes. Everyone (including professors and staff) are always friendly and helpful. -Low tuition. Compared to other universities (HPU, out of state schools, etc) UHWO is way cheaper. It's even cheaper than getting a bachelors at the Manoa campus. -Free parking. Enough said. -They don't require language credits to graduate! Personally, I wasn't interested in taking a language just because it's a grad requirement. Not having to take the language gives students the freedom to choose their own electives and learn things they're interested in, that can really help them later in life. There is a couple of downsides to UHWO. First, they offer a limited selection of programs, as compared to UHM. They also don't have a campus of their own--yet! They're building a brand spankin' new campus as I type, I think to be opened in 2012. Hopefully with a new campus UHWO will be able to offer more classes and programs. Despite these downsides, I think that UHWO is doing great with the resources it has. If your major if offered, I think you should definitely think about UHWO over UHM.

I tried to contact another department which goes through and they tell me to hold on and that they will redirect me to the administration and I wait and wait and only to result back to square one of being sent to voice mail. He loves this school and his grades, understanding of the subjects, social skills and confidence have gone way up because of it. He struggled in the beginning as he was academically behind where he should have been and in this school, you will find out real quick where your child stands as far as knowing a subject. It was a lot of work on his end and our end and yes, there is a lot of homework, quizzes and tests that your child will take. To see your child actually not hate to wake up, to make friends and to feel confident in their academics again. Personally had terrible experiences with this school. The…read morestaff was very rude and disrespectful toward me. Im an older sister of 3 siblings who attend this school. When I go to pick them up, I get all the attitude because it's not my mother picking them up (my mom does not live with me, I help my dad by picking up kids when it's his turn with custody). After seeing my siblings after months, My siblings had infected open cuts that the nurse was not aware of and apparently didn't care about because the children didn't come and complain about it. One of them is in preschool. And there was a situation where my brother called me from the office to pick him up. When I arrived about 20 min later (there was traffic on the way to nanakuli), the after school program took the longest time and had difficulty finding him and telling me where he was. They took me to various locations around the school & called around, which had me worried about how they keep track of children after school. We eventually came to realization that someone else had picked him up, about 45 min after I arrived. My siblings also tell me about their disciplinary training. And they included how they have to write their teacher an apology letter when they forget their practice sheet for their recorder (flute type instrument). And how my younger sister in preschool gets kicked out of my 4th grade sister's class by the teacher before school hours because she's just not allowed to be in there before school. Parking is hectic, and the turn to go into the school is barely a turn at all, I think they're trying to build a streetlight for the turn. My siblings are also afraid to go to the basketball courts after school, they still have yet to tell me why. They just don't. I added another star because the security guards are actually very nice. But that is about it. Wish I had better experiences. Unfortunately, trying to get the kids transferred out is my only option at this point.

What I love: The art galleries: The smaller one changes almost every week. Sometimes I'll pass by or drop in when I have time to really look at what's in there. The bigger one I believe is for MFA students or bigger artwork. It's A/C and quiet in there. Perfect art viewing environment! The classrooms: I haven't been to many, but I grew very familiar with the Photo Lab and Digital Imaging Lab. The Photo lab is of course filled with pictures, by students and Professor Stan. The photography ranges from projects to even random funny ones. The labbies are also very helpful and chill. The Digital Imaging lab is lit just right for the working environment. It's a good space in general with an inflatable moose head on the wall. Everyday's a surprise: sometimes I'll find some weird or funny things posted on the walls of this building. I saw a funny but threatening letter on a locker once, someone stole the girl's lock and she was very mad but entertaining. Even the restroom stalls have some interesting art or writing. And there was one semester where they had built a cardboard castle in the seating area on the first floor--what a great day that was to play in it! Also, I can't forget their "Free Store" by the office. You'll find random things just out there for the taking. Some good stuff, really. AND there's Papa Lucks across the way. For the long work days, I could stop by here for a caffeine fix or some food. What I dislike: The only thing I really don't like are the restrooms. You'd think that the girls' room would be clean at least, but no..unfortunately a lot of the times they are not. It's gross and embarrassing sometimes. Most of the doors don't even lock... But I still love this building. Despite some stress from projects here, I feel very at home.

There's designated areas if you want to park and walk your child to their classrooms. The parking staff is very attentive. Other than picking up the kids and dropping off the kids I'm usually here for any little type of assembly or performance the kids have the only downfall to this school is the parking. For a small school there are lots of parents. The latest activity that I attended here at the school was mayday. Parking was chaotic I went super early to make sure I got a parking spot and walked home. Upon walking back I noticed that the police were there to give tickets. The school however did make an announcement over the PA system about moving or you would be ticketed if parking in any unmarked parking stall. I understand you have to move but for may day I don't understand why the police were there. It was a day to enjoy the kids but at the same time now you have to worry about your car. There was some opening on the field where they should utilize for parking so maybe in the future that should happen.

Another really cool notable thing offered at Waianae HS is a clinic on-campus run by the Waianae Comprehensive Health Services (something along those lines, haha) and it operates like an urgent care for students and families in the area. They can prescribe medicationa, be seen by a nurse practitioner, etc. It isnt a replacement for the schools health office of nurse but its rather an addition in case of serious medical emergencies.
