This really is a bit of a gem of a place so I almost don't want to tell people about it! The facility is lovely and, even though it's an old building, they keep it very fresh and clean looking with updated furnishing and fixtures while still maintaining a very homey feel. I love it when the fires are going and the bar is very cozy and bright. On this occasion, we chose the dining room. When we arrived, we were taken to a table in one of the larger rooms in the back that are more typically used for events. It was a lovely room but I preferred to be somewhere a little closer to the bar and main, older part of the building. The hostess was perfectly accommodating and this was no problem. Instead, my husband and I put in our orders at the bar while we had a drink and when our food was ready, they took us to a different table. The service was completely friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a hard time choosing what to order, but settled on the fresh hake with roast potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflower puree. It was so so good. I ate everything. My husband got a steak and chips, which were perfectly cooked. The meals around ours looked very good, too. Donegan's also pulls a brilliant pint and we had both Guinness and Smithwicks. If you go you gotta try the bucky and smoke special, however if you just fancy a beer or maybe even a white russian all drinks are available once you bring them with you. Smoking is outdoors only so the place is nice and fresh inside and the smoke breaks are quite social. Theres usually a game of shithead or darts going and you can always give the arcade machine a go too. If your lucky you might even catch a movie night on the big screen and major sporting events are sometimes hosted aswell. The locals are friendly if you know them but can be hostile to newcomers initially. Not the kind of place you'd go if you were out to score but for a nice relaxed evening of boozing and always stimulating conversation she's your only man. *NB* Beware of the cat.

But perhaps the best bit is the Beer Garden, it is the best kept secret of this pub (until now). It is an oasis in the middle of a bustling town. A perfect retreat on a sunny day. Then another girl asked for two Guinness, and despite claiming the bar was closed, he said, "How can I say no to that?" and served her. Watching the older lady get singled out like that felt awful and unfair. On top of that, the bathroom was disgusting -- no toilet paper, no paper towels, and the toilet seat wouldn't stay up. Definitely not clean. We came here excited, but it wasn't worth it at all. Just a few doors down there's a fantastic place with great service that was far better than this experience. Was kinda empty when we arrived, but both guys working were super friendly and, after learning we were from the US, were quick to adapt the conversation. One has a good friend that moved to Indiana, the other was a huge fan of Andrew Luck (Our quarterback for the Colts). We talked beer, American sports, and they could not have been friendlier. After I finished my Guinness I was hankering for some whisky. One of the guys showed me the local stuff and I, being intrigued, ordered a shot. He came back and warned me it was 11 euros. Omg how nice was that? So I ordered another Guinness. My wife doesn't drink beer, so they made her a Sex on the Beach cocktail that she loved. Around 10 a two man band started playing music. They were great. One of them seemed to be playing percussion on a wood box. We had never seen anything like it. I had two other bars on the list to visit tonight so we left prematurely. Very, very cozy pub in front and a larger bar area in back where live music is frequent. They have a good-sized beer garden with heater lamps as well. For the ladies, there is a hair straightener in the women's toilets that you can use for €2. I did not use it, but I have to say I haven't seen such amenities in a pub before. Definitely a place worth checking out.
