I attended Will Anderson's show and poetry reading on Thursday, November 13, 2025. My 37 year old ankles were so happy to see the venue had set up rows of white seats for the 90 minute show. The white seats + the ambient Christmas lighting matched the content of the show perfectly. The acoustics were good and I was only pulled out of the show mentally a couple of times by the roar of an emergency vehicle siren. The sound system was crystal clear. My friend went to go purchase us Waterloo Sparkling Water for $2 per the wall, but the bartender gave it to her for free from the soda gun--I wasn't mad at that. Due to trekking from the suburbs to Wrigleyville, the timing was off to try the restaurant, but I appreciate the venue and look forward to the next show that piques my interest there! read more

Schubas Tavern is an interesting place. When you walk in, it looks like an unassuming little bar, but the place is much larger. There is a back room where live shows take place as well as an upstairs area with a bar and a dance space. The Queen has been there many times for their live shows and on certain nights they do a DJ upstairs. On this particular night, it was a dance night and The Queen asked if I wanted to go with her and I said yes. I mean, who doesn't want to dance? The bar itself was small and crowded, with a few people sitting on the side having eats. Can't speak to the food, but The Queen said she has eaten there and enjoyed it. I was not even aware that there was an upstairs until I saw a door open near the end of the bar and The Queen pulled me over to go up the stairs. Once upstairs, we entered this small room bathe in a red light. There were a few seats and tables. I would say that there are not a lot of seats, so you would have to get there to grab a seat at one of the tables or at the bar. The DJ that night was cool, spinning some great tunes. The Queen and I took turns dancing and drinking for several hours. I loved the vibe, it was like being in someone's basement chillin like a villain. After about a 2-3 hours, the place got crowded and we ended up leaving as it was getting hot. But we did have fun dancing with ourselves as well as some other folks on the floor. I could definitely see myself going back to Schubas Tavern to dance as it was cozy and intimate. I would be interested in trying the food as well. From what I could see, it looked pretty decent. read more

Schubas Tavern in the Wrigleyville neighborhood in Chicago is beloved by locals. It's a classic pub where locals come for great beer, classic cocktails, and live music. Schubas is a classic old Chicago building from 1903 built by the Schlitz Brewing Company. You can see the classic Schlitz globes carved into the facade in a few spots. That Schlitz globe represents extraordinary memories for many who grew up in the upper Midwest. The interior hasn't changed since it opened as Schubas in 1988. It has a fun Art Deco vibe and oozes with warm local friendliness. It's a unique Chicago tavern because it has a small concert space in the back room with the capacity for 165 people. My beautiful wife and I were lucky enough to see some amazing acts in that intimate room before they hit it big like John Mayer, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) and the Freddy Jones Band. We visited recently to see a great local Austin TX band called West 22nd. Our good friend's son slaps the bass for them and is living the dream touring the country right now. SCHUBAS is probably one of my top 5 music venue concerts to attend to. Any time I see an artist who is performing there, it's without question I HAVE to purchase. I love that they are independent and don't do things through Ticketmaster. Tickets are always affordable. Paid street parking is ample and even on a crowded day, you can find residential parking for the most part. The crowd is always super chill and everyone is relatively friendly. They also have great food and great pricing with good bartenders and service. The venue in itself is small, quaint and intimate with decent sound/noise level. My millennial heart approves. read more

Came here to watch my favorite band, Grizfolk. I didn't get to experience the bar area or try the food, but bathrooms were clean, good beer selection on tap, plenty of street parking and a nearby parking garage. Bar service inside the concert venue was great. The concert venue is well aged with original decorative woodwork and great acoustics. It is small and standing room mostly (a couple of benches are available if you cannot stand for long periods of time). No matter where you are, you are close to the stage. read more

I came here on Tuesday May 28th for Alexander Stewart's concert. It started raining heavily around 5:45. I am a VIP ticket holder, and they sent several emails leading up to the concert that check-in would be 6pm, meet & greet at 6:30 etc. One thing I didn't like is that if you're not 21+ or have a VIP ticket, they wouldn't let you in, and it's crazy to see how many young adults get soaked in the rain. I thankfully wasn't in that position, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. It's also a very small space, and if it wasn't for this artist, I wouldn't have been here. I also can't speak on their food. I ordered a Topo Chico to stay hydrated. The venue itself is standing room only. There is a bench on the far right where you can sit on, but it's definitely first come first serve. At one point there was a sound system issue where Emmy Meli couldn't hear herself on stage. Other than that, it's not bad of a venue, I do like how versatile they are - they have a bar, dining area, and a decently sized stage and music venue. If another artist I like performs here, I'd look forward to coming back. It's not a place I'd go out of my way for. read more

I really like Schubas! It is part old timey Chicago dive-ish bar and part trendy concert venue. I was there on a Saturday afternoon in March and it was not crowded. They have a few high tables in the front bar area (toward Southport). They have pretty standard drinks (lots of beer, some cocktails but beer is the focus). I was really blown away by the stoner nachos--much more refined toppings, cheese and flavor than I expected from a bar! I believe they were being served at the time for March Madness, but if you see them on the menu I highly recommend! They were also very accommodating to make a tray without meat for a vegetarian :) read more

Came for the market around Christmas time. Was nice to have a drink and walk around, but was pretty crowded and hard to enjoy. There was vender selling the wine in storage and that had great options with reasonable prices! We have been coming to Schubas for music since before we even lived in Chicago, but tonight was the first time we'd been in for food. The menu is on the smaller side, but covers a lot of ground. We started with the falafels. The flavor was solid, but they had definitely been in the fryer a bit too long - the outsides were almost too hard to cut into. The dipping sauces, however, were excellent. It's always a treat to see Murphy's Dogs (she had the Chicago-style veggie). I was between a few options, so asked if the chef had ever considered adding meat to the delucious sounding three cheese and broccoli spread grilled cheese. Think Melt in Cleveland. We were visiting a friend who lives on Southport, where this place came up on my Yelp search for brunch places close by. Came in for their brunch and sat at the bar. Bartender was very nice and had a trainer with him. They both did a great job taking car of us. I ordered the mimosa and the Irish coffee to get it going. My BF also had a mimosa and something else but I forget. Mimosa was delicious and the Irish coffee gave me a boost after a long night prior. I got the Biscuits and Gravy. It came with 1 biscuit, with a very creamy gravy. The gravy didn't seem to have any meat, but I would double check for the vegetarians/Vegans that might read my review. The gravy had hits of garlic and was rather taste. It surprisingly filled me up and wasn't overly heavy, like how BGs can be sometimes. My BF got the breakfast burrito and was happy with his choice. At the end, we split one of their homemade donuts and man, i wish I had room for another. It was a rather dense doughnut, like how pound cake would taste. It had a homemade raspberry icing that was SO good! Lastly, I want to point that they have bar hooks for bags, purses, briefcases, etc. I WISH EVERY BAR OFFERED THIS!!!!! Major plus! Oh Schubas how I love you. I stumbled across your intimate music venue on my 29th birthday, when the doorman let us in despite the show being sold out. Many years later I decided to revisit my youth, only to find a decidedly modern restaurant in place of the grill that had been next door. I resolved to trying the James Beard-award-winning food under oh-so-bright white lights, only to be told that the same chef prepared the bar menu next door as well. If there were a third option between stark modernism and a pub atmosphere, like Goldilocks I would be satiated, but as it stands, eating awarding-winning food underneath a copper ceiling while listening to Lou Reed isn't all that bad. And the shows are consistently good as well. An evening well spent, in any era. read more

My favorite spot to see live music in Chicago, hands down.. Not too huge, not too tiny. There really isn't a bad place to stand in the house and the sound is amazing. A lot of my favorite bands pass through here so when they don't have a Detroit date I gladly roll out to Chicago for a show here. Love the attached restaurant (Harmony Grill. Mac & cheese? OMG) which makes grabbing a bite before a show super easy. The bar in the front of the venue is awesome for having a cocktail or beer before or after a show. The bartenders here are fabulous as well. If standing for long periods of time is hard for you then this venue might be rough since it's pretty much all standing save for a few pews against the right wall for seating (although it's hard to see once folks are all standing) but other than that this place is aces. read more

Good food, good music, good times! Check out the bloody mary here! It's a drink that comes with a meal on a stick. The garnish is loaded with a mini pickle, cube of cheese, cube of meat, and olive. The restaurant attached to the bar serves awesome food. After dinner, you can also enjoy a drink at the bar area before the concert in the bar room starts. I've seen many great bands play here and even a side show called Pretty Things Peepshow. There's also a jukebox and old photo booth to round out this venue. Beware of the photo booth, though. It is quite old and have been known to swallow $3 without spitting any favors back in return. I should mention that they don't serve Miller Lite here. I had often wondered why in the world there was Schlitz masonry outside, but it turns out that back in the day, that's exactly how bars were paid to be built. The brewing company paid and thus took some free advertising. Anyway... Schubas.... its become a staple... For me its less about the concerts and the night drinking as it is about the Harmony Grill for brunch. Weekend mornings watch out - this place can be PACKED - but there is never a long wait and the food is always hot, always fresh... AND reasonably priced. Try almost anything on the menu.... I think I've had everything in the left hand column at least once... The Red-Eye Burrito and the Migas round out my personal favorites. read more

If you're 6'6" or taller, this is probably a five-star music venue. I'm 5'6", so this is only a 3-star venue for me. I feel bad giving this mediocre rating to a place this cool, with great sound and decent beer prices. Still, the whole point of going to a concert is to SEE the performers, and this is a place where shorter people don't get the same opportunities as taller folks to do so. Schubas is a standing venue with no real seating options (unless you want to rest on the benches on the side and stare into people's asses). There is no pitch to the floor, so if you're short, you get to enjoy the show trying to find a sliver of a view between taller people's heads. I was only about a third of the way back in the small venue, and thanks to taller people who arrived early (or in a few cases, shoved their way to the front), at no time could I see all the performers on stage. (And you have to love those people who yank out their giant phones and video the whole damn concert, blocking the view of those behind them, because who doesn't want to see a concert video captured by your phone's shitty microphone?) Note to Schubas: I get all the music I want for one price on Spotify, so if I want to HEAR but not SEE the performers, then I don't need to pay your admission and drive cross-town. How about you offer some up-priced VIP seating options to give options to those people who prefer not to stand and for shorter people who may want to see the show? This could be a great, intimate venue to see some solid music, but you have to know you'll be standing for two or three hours (pre-show and show) to hold your spot. And if you're short, you better get here VERY early or plan to look at people's shoulders, hipster knit caps and bald spots rather than the performers you came to see. read more

I know there are several parts to this place, bar next door, breakfast, lunch/dinner menus, but I certainly had a 5 star experience for Sunday brunch. We were immediately seated outside on a beautiful morning and our waitress was really nice and always around even through the place seemed busy. The breakfast menu looked great (as well as everyone else's plates) but decided to go with the Eggs New Orleans because they sounded great and were recommended by our waitress... The hash browns were nothing special but the eggs were absolutely delicious. One of the best breakfast items I've ever had. Poached egg on top of a very delicious crab cake had me overly satisfied and I will be returning specifically for this. Overall great experience and I highly recommend the weekend brunch, not sure about everything else. read more

I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon after going to a play at stage 773 nearby. Nothing special, just your typical bar. I thought the menu was pretty lacking, however, the burger I ordered was pretty good. I think the tomato jam really made the burger tasty. read more

They have a diverse group of underground artists that perform here, so it's definitely worth a visit. I'm glad I purchased my tickets in advance, because they were sold out when I arrived. The drinks are a bit weak, but they are also inexpensive, so it isn't a big issue. read more

We got dinner at the attached Harmony Grill before heading over here for the show. I was dumb and didn't bother to get tickets beforehand, so my heart dropped when I saw the "Sold Out" sign by the door. But LUCKY ME, there was an extra ticket someone didn't want, and the bouncer/ticket lady was nice enough to give it to me for free! The show was amazing, and I got to admire Tim and Paul's beautiful voices from only a few feet away. This venue is definitely worth checking out, especially when your favorite band comes to town. read more

I really wanted to love new Schubas Harmony restaurant, unfortunately the food was below expectations. The old Harmony used to have acoustic brunch and simple comfort food menu and now it's transformed into fine dining wannabe. The decor is modern with infusion of 70s (in a good way) with great outdoor seating around large fireplace. Staff was very nice and accommodating. Unfortunately, none of that mattered because the food did not taste well which was even more upsetting considering the cost. We ordered several dishes and our total was over $200 for 2 people. We started with our favorite- chicken moose pate. It was so sweet we couldn't eat it and it left an aftertaste that wasn't good. Next we ordered two "shareables", which ended up being soups which really can't be considered shareable when they're not served already separated. The ravioli in seaweed broth was not good while mushroom dish was good and was the only dish on the menu we would recommend. Next was fish dish served on a mash of pumpkin with dehydrated pumpkin flowers. Fish tasted just ok, but pumpkin was bland and flavorless and colorless. Short rib was just OK. Deserts were not memorable and Prosecco served in a non flute glass. Maybe my disappointment was bigger because my expectations and hope was so high. Please go back to the simple, tavern style food. read more

Although the macaroni and cheese at Harmony Grill might be ah-mazing according to M, now we both agree that it's not a strong enough hook to justify going there. I mean, it's not as if there's anything that's blatantly bad about Harmony Grill. They have okay service (nothing special) and a parking lot (teeny tiny). It's clean enough. I guess it's just that I'm not that big into macaroni and cheese. Furthermore, the food that we had during our last visit was gross. None of us liked it. M got tacos and I got brisket. M hated that the pork in the tacos was barbecue. She thought that it was so wrong to put barbecue anything in a taco. There were only a few slices of brisket on top of a large pile of black beans, corn, and other vegetables. I love vegetables but this mixture was really bad. Not only was it really bad but it also didn't make sense to serve the brisket on top of them. The flavors didn't mix well. Besides, the brisket wasn't that good. At the end of our last visit we made the mutual decision not to return to Harmony Grill. I could have told you that a while ago. There's a million other better places. Now M understands that there's more to a restaurant than macaroni and cheese. read more

Consider this update my ba-hundredth Schuba's "Check-In"! 5-Star bump! I heart Schuba's...both the long front bar with a great jukebox, hard-working staff, a vintage Photo-Booth, always a lively good time; and the beautiful wood-accented backroom to see rock shows. Schuba's doesn't do printed tix, which seems to prevent scalping! When I arrived for the Rogue Wave post-Lollapalooza show recently, I was greeted outside the main doors by a nice guy with a clipboard who had my information already, and suggested he could help me find someone to take my extra ticket to the Sold Out show. That's service with a smile! The backroom is intimate and has its own bar with a limited selection. Waitstaff make frequent trips through the crowd should you need anything else! I've seen so many great shows here and the sound is great. I won't list them all, but I will just say that the club was mindful not to oversell the Rogue Wave Lolla aftershow, allowing patrons a little breathing room and a great intimate atmosphere! read more

We went to Schuba's for a Mother's Day brunch. We did not want to wait in a long line so we used OpenTable to find some where that took brunch reservations. We were immediately seated (much to the chagrin of those who did not reserve a table). Our server came by right away and took our order. There were five of us in the party. It took a very long time to be served - much longer than we expected. And, when the food arrived, the server was not sure which plate had what on it. (Many of the meals looked very similar.) They got some of them wrong, and one meal was not prepared correctly. Although we said we were not particularly happy about it, they insisted they remake the meals. After waiting another 15 minutes, we started to eat our now cold food. We called over our server and again said they should not remake the meals, but she insisted again saying they were taking care of the meals. We said to simply bring them out "to-go". It took another 1/2 hour to receive the meals and our check. The server said that the manager had corrected the check. Without looking at the check, I slipped my credit card in the clip on the folder. Then I thought I should check. Not only did they charge us for the meals they got wrong, they charged us 50% of the price of the remade meals. I called over our server and, very nicely, said I could not quite figure out how they calculated the final amount and would she help me understand. She took the check and said she would check with the manager. The manager came by our table with a new check saying they did make an error. The total on the new bill was $50 less than what they originally tried to charge us. I'm not one to let loose in reviews on restaurants. I understand how hard a job it can be. But, so many mistakes. And, if they err on their checks the way they did on ours frequently, that is really a problem. Would we go back? Yes. Will we be very explicit about what we want? Yes. I like this place. It is small and intimate. Big name acts won't book here because there is simply not enough space. The stage is small, and there are even tables/chairs along the side of the room. I saw His Name is Alive here the first time I went, and Indian Jewelry the second time. Both couldn't have had more than 50 or so people there. I mean, it really does feel that small. Once I went and there was a shitty DJ who left his turntables on auto-pilot and was drunkenly cavorting with the femininas near him. I had my first veggie burger at Harmony Grill and by gosh it was delicious! They have this rice and bean veggie burger that is just in a league all of its own. Their mac and cheese is yummy and so are their wings, chicken pot pie and meatloaf. It's all about the comfort food here. The restaurant itself is pretty cozy, low lighting, booths and tables, nice artwork, friendly and attentive service. Oo and Schubas/Harmony Grill actually has a little parking lot on the side of the building which is great considering how congested the area can get. read more

There are a few tables and chairs to the side, but most of the crowd gets to stand and sway to the music. I saw the band Cordero here and it is always cool to see and hear the musicians in such an intimate venue. I've loved Schuba's over the years for a lot of music, and the fact that it's a Schlitz tavern. There's not a lot of those left around. In the area today, I popped in for brunch. Eggs New Orleans, with yum, hot sauce. Despite my waitress, who was charming and friendly and utterly great . . . I wasn't all that impressed with the food. Crab cakes and poached eggs over fried tomatoes and drenched with Hollandaise sauce, on an English muffin. The crab cakes tasted a bit off, and there were a few bits of shell in them. Hmm. Everything was sort of overcooked. The lemonade was very tasty, tangy and good. I'll be back for music, but probably not food. read more

We came to celebrate a friends birthday with some food and drink and then catch the band next door. While the interior is a little stark and lacks anything to buffer the noise ( meaning it's loud in there) the service staff is friendly and the food was pretty good. There were a couple of specials for the day so be sure to ask your server. On the night we were there it was a cheese curd appetizer and chicken entree. We ordered a range of appetizers from pouting (quite good) to hummus and pita, and some fried artichokes. The menu has a wide range of offerings to satisfy anyone in your group. The steak salad was quite good, as was the chicken special and the steak and fries. But the real winner at the table was clearly the Mac and Cheese that you can customize with your favorite mix ins. The two who had it raved about it. And for dessert? Well since we were celebrating a birthday we needed something that would hold a candle and the chocolate brownie did not disappoint. We also had the apple cobbler and bread pudding-but the brownie was the clear winner!! Dinner with plenty of drinks and dessert ran about $50. And if you drive- street parking is pretty easy in this area. And the best part of this place? Walk through the door in the back and you don't even have to go outside to catch your show! I must say, if I was going to a show at Shuba's, I'd definitely plan to make life easier by eating at Harmony Grill versus commuting all over the place plus they have parking. Score! It's just typical American cuisine. Nothing special, nothing fancy but good and fair prices. I had shrimp and grits. My bad, I'm always trying to go fancy pants when in reality, one look at this menu and it's clear as day your best bet is a sandwich of some sort. It's not that they were bad, just that this isn't the place to get it and I might have been happier with the panini that I had originally intended on ordering.
