Trivia: What is a schwabenhof? (I did look up the German word, and I will say, it sort of matches). I must say, according to Google translate, I might like Blick auf die Berge instead. The view is spectacular. The beer selection matches the name. And there is representation from my favorite brewery, Weihenstephaner. The decor is rustic and fun. At first I wanted to say the food is the downside. But really, the lack of food is the downside. The fries we had with their special seasoning (is it Lawrys?) was okay, but reminded me of oven cooked frozen fries. I wish there was good German good, well, anywhere in Alaska. Service was great! So much fun! Went with a friend for karaoke and everyone had a great time. Some super talented people are regulars here but even those with less of a musical ear really get into it and everyone sings along. Look for Mercedes at the bar and you'll be treated well. Did not try the food this time so I will be back. This is a TINY bar, so come early and plan for a crowd, be kind, and be patient. read more

The building had a very rustic with a hand-crafted feel and dim lighting. We sat inside, but there was nice patio seating available as well, with a great view. Our only complaint about this place was the lack of food. And the fact the server/bartender seemed to forget I asked for a water before his shift finished. One of the other reviews shared a much more extensive menu, but when we went, there were only 3 meal options. My husband and our friend both had the bratwurst dinner: a bratwurst on a bun with potato salad and sweet kraut. They were out of the beer cheese meant to pair with the soft pretzel, so I went for the picnic meal: a German charcuterie of Swiss cheese, summer sausage, Braunschweiger, a pickle, peanuts, kraut, potato salad, and a small bread loaf. Everything was palatable, but I did want more kraut and potato salad than I received. The beer pours were generous. I had the (very refreshing) cider, a grapefruit beer, and the closest thing they had to a dunkelweizen. The grapefruit beer was my favorite. read more

We stopped in thinking it was a restaurant based off Yelp but it is not. It's a bar. Great beer, there is only 3 items on the food menu so we were a bit disappointed. The staff is not very welcoming. We felt kind of awkward, seems like a hangout for the owners friends. There was a bartender that wasn't experienced at making drinks. Pretty cool European feel to a traditional pub. This is an octagon shaped log cabin that sits high on a hill on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, closest to Wasilla. Talk about fusion. With Alaskana log decor they have every imaginable German and UK beer on tap! I saw Newcastle on tap as well as German beers I can't pronounce, but I could also see there were tons of varieties of Alaskan Distillery liquor - a local place brewing flavored vodkas including, kid you not, smoked salmon (not a popular one, not even in a Bloody Mary). Clientele seem to be regulars - everyone was on a first name basis when I stopped by on an early Tues. evening. All but the bartender were in the over 30 category. It seems they all had their own seats...nobody gave me the stink eye if I was sitting in the wrong place. Quickly the clientele went to "over 50". Nobody was rude but nobody was overly friendly (or friendly) either. Customers knew where the darts were & were perfectly comfortable dismantling a nearby hanging lamp to get to it. The view is spectacular. I'm glad I finally checked it out after about 15 years. On the way out I used the ladies restroom and laughed out loud to see it was a "two seater" - open the door and there are two toilets with a sink in between. Guess if you want to go to the bathroom with your friends, you can do that. LOL!!! I hear they have bratwurst and cook outs on the deck, but saw no signs of food. I think it's a weekend thing. I didn't even see popcorn. I think it's mainly just a bar but apparently a well-loved one. read more

A good place to visit after work on on thw weekend. There's always locals and the typical bar-people. Always locally brewed beer on tap and German tap beers that are fun to try as a flight. Not a place to eat dinner, as their menu is limited. It's also a smoking bar if that matters. Beautiful views and great deck for eating in spring and summer. read more

This is an amazing made of solid wood pub with great music to jam to and sometimes I can join the jam! Unfortunately this is a mostly beer bar. Us girls that love wine will be dissapointed . Get yourself a 6-pack of German beer and sit on your back porch with a pretzel and you will have a far more authentic and pleasant German Beer Garden experience. This is NOT a German restaurant or beer garden. It's a place that serves some overpriced German beer under the guise of being a German restaurant, perched on a hill overlooking the noisy Palmer/Wasilla Highway. We ordered the daily German special which was advertised as two German sausages, bread, cheese, pickles, German potato salad, etc. We got a pickle (in a zip lock bag), a small chunk of Swiss cheese (in a ziplock bag), a 1" slice of pepperoni (in a 1/2 oz. soufflé cup), a 1/2 " slice of some other meat (in a 1/2 oz. soufflé cup), two potato salad somethings (in 1/2 oz. soufflé cups) and a few peanuts (in a 1/2 oz. soufflé cup). All plucked masterly out of the refrigerator and presented in their plastic containers and ziplock bags with a small fist sized loaf of bread on a dirty wood bread board--at a blistering delivery speed of over 25 minutes (after waiting 10 minutes for a menu). All the while listening to the host complaining about being the only one there to serve the handful of people that were there on a Sunday afternoon (Hint--not our problem and it did not seem that crowded). I go to restaurants to be served food and drink, hopefully, better than I can eat a home, and to sit back and enjoy being served a meal--not having to serve myself. The food that I ate I could have pulled out of my refrigerator in less than 30 seconds without preparation and it would have been far better at a fraction of the price. Overall Rating: Food - You are better off eating old leftover food from the back of your produce drawer in your refrigerator. Beer - Buy yourself a 6-pack and stay home. Service - Huh!? Does anyone know how to run a Bar/Restaurant? Atmosphere - Like sitting on a picnic table on the side of the Glen Highway. read more

I really like this bar. Great feel to the place withy the shape and the logs and custom wood work. They have so many good beers on tap. If you get a chance get the bratwurst! It was delicious with homemade potato salad and very strong German mustard. If I drank more I would be a regular at this place. My only complaint is that people smoke inside but it is a bar. Grand opening consisted of a great band, good beer however, the outside patio with the great view was filled with smokers. We could not get away from cigarette smoke. Unless they institute a no smoking policy we won't be coming back. Alaska has great fresh air why ruin it with cigarettes read more

Seems to be a hobby bar for the owners to host their friends. If you're not part of that clique it feels like you're in a place that speaks a foreign language. Beautiful building/furniture/view. We like to come to the Schwab from Anchorage for the beers.. we definitely don't come for the atmosphere. It's SOOOO smoky in there that it makes it hard to stay for a long period of time. The waitress we had last night was not on top of things and we had to constantly wait for refills which got annoying. But the main complaint is the lack of food. We brought friends who were excited to get the German Picnic but we were told that they didn't serve food when the band played... for whatever reason. So we got some dry pretzels with some mustard (which a friend couldn't eat because of a gluten allergy). This place could be a hot spot if they put more effort into it. read more

We ALWAYS visit this bar whenever we are in Alaska...nine AK trips....the people are friendly, the beer is cold and delicious...The bartenders do everything reasonable to make you feel comfortable...Go there on Friday afternoon for some great food. and beer.
