Atmosphere and service, muah! [Chef's kiss]. Food, meh. For the cost, I wasn't impressed. The beef consomme was ok, but as I often say, nothing to write home about. I was really disappointed in the Wiener Schnitzel. It was lacking flavor and served more like pounded veal with a side of breading (see pic). I did order a side of horseradish and was pleasantly surprised when it was served fresh. Love that! I ended up mixing that with the potato salad for a lovely treat. I left the Schnitzel after 3 bites. Pleasant little surprise was the bread being served with Obatzda. That was very good! I didn't stay for dessert. read more

This is a one Michelin star restaurant in Munich and once again, being a restaurant in a hotel, my expectation was low, and somehow, they managed to go below that. To start, I called up the Kempinski hotel in the afternoon to see if we could bring a dog and they said, yes I could. When we arrived the maitre'd said, dogs were not allowed. In fact he said, if our dog was smaller it was ok and, we have a small dog. So I got in a taxi and took our dog back home. There was no real acknowledgement of this at the table either. Basically everyone was looking for someone else to blame. In my view unacceptable attitude in an establishment of this caliber and, I stay at a lot of Kempinski hotels around the world. The menu is small with a few starters and mains. I chose an asparagus soup to start which was nice. The main was sausage with kimchi. As it turned out the kimchi was just stewed sweet red cabbage which is commonly served in Bavarian restaurants and had no resemblance to kimchi, very disappointing. The kaiserschmarrn I ordered for dessert was raw and tasteless. In fact it is the worst kaiserschmarrn I have ever had in Bavaria. It was a truly disappointing finish to the meal. How this is referred to as fine dining is beyond me. A good kaiserschmarrn is the hallmark of a good Bavarian restaurant and if you get that so wrong, what else is left ? We had a nice waiter and he is the reason for the second star otherwise it would have been one star from me. A truly disappointing experience I will not ever come back for again. I don't hesitate to pay for a good meal but this was just ordinary Bavarian cuisine for an expensive price. My local wirtshaus does a better meal for a tenth of the price. Truly disappointing. I also complained at the reception on our way out so let's see if they even bother to get back to me. read more

Expensive, but quite an experience. Came in here on a same-day vacation reservation on a Thursday night. The place is quite classy but they did seat us with my t-shirt/cargo pants/hiking boots.Plating was beautiful and service was tightly run. Food was good but subpar for the pricing. This is where they lose the most points with me. I expect a culinary journey for the price on the menu. What we got were good, if otherwise non-noteworthy dishes. A few of my dishes were over salted, sometimes flavors would not be well blended, and selections were oddly combined or oversold on the menu. Case in point: wagyu should have visible and fine marbling. What we got was as lean as it gets. Service was good. The food was served at a consistent and relaxed pace over the course of four hours. It wasn't quite machine-like precision that you get at some fine dining, but it was clean and non-distracting execution over the course of the meal. read more

I have been traveling with clients for a week. Secured reservations on the only night I had alone for the next two weeks. Upon arrival was informed my reservation was only good in the bar. I presented the emailed confirmation clearly stating the Fine Dining Room, but was told no. They would not accommodate a party of 1. Not acceptable. I ate in the bar. The service was very good. My opinion is that if you are going to advertise about being a Michelin star restaurant, and charge accordingly, then you better live up to the hype. This is my 3rd time visiting a Michelin restaurant, and I was looking forward to the experience. Sorely disappointing. First of all, when arriving for our reservation, they put us in a table right in front of the door. We might as well have volunteered to take everyone's coat as they entered. Why this table even exists in a fine dining establishment is beyond me. I should have rejected it as soon as the hostess led us over, but at first I didn't realize how awful it truly was. The service in general was lacking throughout the night. Wine and water glasses were empty and ignored. Help with the menu was nonexistent. Amazing, since we were literally 3 feet from the maître d station and could hear the details of every reservation and every employee calling in sick. The food was completely average. While a welcome respite from fried heavy German food, it was lacking in flair and flavor. They waited a good 15 minutes after we ordered oysters to return and inform us that they were out. Disappointing. A quite expensive starter sausage and cheese plate was unremarkable, except for the tartare, which was excellent. The risotto had perfect consistency, but lacked any seasoning and was...bland. The night's saving grace was the char - which was the best piece of fish I have had in a long time. The chef did a good job of leaving the fish alone, augmenting the natural flavor without covering it up. Outstanding. I would return just to eat this dish again. The veal was unimpressive, as was the Bavarian crème. While the meal was quite inexpensive by Michelin standards, it's a shame that 30 minutes after paying $150 pp for a cocktail, meal, wine and tip - I was hungry enough to have to order a pretzel at the Hofbrau Haus up the street. I came to visit Munich for the weekend in order to experience some new culinary experiences because I have been working in Belfast since August. I am very familiar with all the fine dining restaurants there and was ready for a new adventure. I had great expectations for a 1-star meal in the fine dinning portion of Schwarzreiter and was curious how "young Bavarian cuisine" would be. However, the food at this restaurant was lacking that level of quality in nearly every aspect. The flavors in most dishes just weren't exciting and distinctive. Sure, there was lots on display with ever plate, however, it all seemed to taste the same. The worst additions in that regards were numerous purees of different colors accompanying every dish, they had the texture of baby food and equally bland flavors. The worst offender in terms of "covering up" the star ingredient of the dish was the "Bavarian garnele" ... locally farmed, good-sized shrimp that were covered in so much curry-based batter that the delicate crustacean was lost both in regards to volume, taste as well as texture. It was a rather large dish and there wasn't enough flavor here because the chance to spice things up with the curry crust was missed. The asparagus plate was okay, but again, too many things to dip and mix in, muddling what are delicate flavors. If the description of the dishes read like odd combinations on the menu, the plates themselves will be even more so because there are many other elements going on that aren't listed. Had to try the rabbit. The center loin piece was nicely cooked (not overdone) however, it was wrapped in some green paste casing which just confused the pure flavors of the meat. The rest of the plate was utterly unmemorable. The air-dried beef was also well cooked, but just too salty. And the rectangular little pile of aubergine slices that sat alongside the meat was so overdone that there was no texture nor much flavor left. The sturgeon and caviar was equally bland and disappointing. The dollop of caviar was nothing other than a visual component. It had no crunch and no pronounced caviar flavor, really nothing to add another dimension to the dish. Again, the piece of sturgeon was cooked nicely, but lacked anything else on the plate to play up its subtle flavor and texture. We also noticed that all of the 5,6 hot dishes that we ordered arrived at the table lukewarm. I went with the wine pairing while my dinner partner did not. It was a great choice, but a chef doesn't get a star for wine pairings.... At the end, I was utterly stuffed but still longing for a plate of 3,4 perfectly paired ingredients to create a dish with acidity, a blend of salt, sweetness, even a little spice and an edge of heat. I would have exchanged the whole 5 course meal for one of those. Needless to say, we skipped desert since the two options just sounded overly sweet. I seriously would like to have a chat with the critic who awarded this recognition to the chef. That was back in January, maybe the chef already moved on and the restaurant is now heading downhill. No wonder the place was only half-booked on a Saturday eve. We are going to have lunch at Matsuhisa today and I imagine our palettes will be rejuvenated by some clean and fresh flavors. The Schwarzreiter is the newly renovated restaurant of the Kempinski. It's the former Vue Maximilian. The setting is casual elegant, the atmosphere is cosy, not too formal. We were shown to our table by the receptionist who seemed to be very helpful at first. That was a wrong first impression. I asked to change to change to one of the round tables which she denied because it was booked. Of course this wasn't true, she was just too lazy to go the extra mile. After a while we asked one of the waitresses if we could change to another table and she asked us to choose freely as none of the round tables was booked! Apart from the receptionist service is excellent. The staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive, leaving enough privacy for the diners. After the first amuse bouche we were given the menu. You choose from 2 different menu. One has 7 courses, the other 5. You can have 4, 5 or 7 courses. The price for both menus is reasonable, no matter how many courses you choose. After selecting the courses we got the second amuse bouche followed by a selection of homemade bread accompanied by unsalted and salted butter. The wine list is extensive covering many wines from the old and new world. I found the champagnes reasonably priced, the wines in general are 3 - 4 times what you pay in wine stores. Very expensive! The food was excellent! They serve bavarian food with a modern twist. I was really pleasantly surprised how good the food was. Portions were adequate, presentation was beautiful, the taste incredible. There was no let down whatsoever. Christian Michel, head chef came for a chat before desserts which was very nice. Ordered a bottle of Pommard Les Vaumuriens 2010 before ordered three A la carte dishes, all the food dishes came 5 minutes after another, considering this place claiming itself to be a five stars eatery in Munich the waiter did not even care to ask "sir, are you in a hurry or should I serve at a more leisurely pace?" The answer I received was "we assume people doing lunch will need to have their food fast" In between my rebuff of serving the last dish when my bottle of wine is not even half-finished, I ordered a Beluga Transatlantic volka with some caviar, a basic version of Osetra caviar, they brought the Beluga volka in a tumbler with three cubes of ice, "it is better with ice", gosh, that's the standard. Needless to say, if you want to woo a client by the shop name this one may do, but if you truly want to enjoy a meal, this place won't satisfy the upper echelon. read more
