Enrollment uses a remote salesperson after a local assessment, and in our case that created a major disconnect. We expected individualized, interactive instruction. Instead, our son was placed in a small-group setting (up to a 4:1 student-to-tutor ratio) where much of the work consisted of independently completing worksheets while the tutor rotated among students. Parents should also understand the financial commitment before enrolling. In addition to the assessment fee, there is a $250 registration fee, and families are expected to prepay a large tutoring package. We were initially presented with a plan exceeding $10,000 before ultimately enrolling in a package of roughly $3,000. Had the instructional model and financial commitment been clearly explained upfront, we would not have enrolled. Our second session was also impacted by staffing issues while the director was serving jury duty. Our son was overwhelmed by the lack of structure, and the experience highlighted how dependent the center appeared to be on the director's presence. To the local director's credit, she spent considerable time discussing our concerns, was candid about the issues we raised, offered to credit the disrupted session, and ultimately honored the refund provisions of our agreement. Our concerns stemmed primarily from the disconnect between the enrollment process and the day-to-day tutoring experience we encountered. I'm leaving this review in the hopes that other parents can go in more informed than we were.  Before starting with an assessment, make sure you understand what a typical session actually looks like and know all fees and the size of the required prepaid tutoring package.

But I think that might have been different if I'd gone to Grandview Elementary. It's a small urban school. It sits on a bluff in Bellevue overlooking the city and the Cincinnati skyline. Wonderful. But even with the blinds drawn and the view obscured, it'd be a great school. The teachers seem to care. No one gives me the impression of clocking time; of winding down until summer vacation hits or a juicy public employees pension can be tapped. Here's what sold me on the school: My oldest went to kindergarten there. We were unhappy with it. From first grade through fourth, my daughter went to Catholic schools. Because of several problems there, we decided it was time to move on. I called several schools and on a lark called Grandview. The principal that was just starting her first year when my daughter was in kindergarten now had several years to reshape the school. What caught my attention though was she still remember my daughter, her interests, and her hobbies...and my too-young-for-school daughter's name. And me and my wife. That's a level of attention paid that we still find permeating the school. This is an urban school with too much poverty and young, broken families, but the school offers those kids and all kids a chance. It's one I wish I had had a chance to go to.

The thing to keep in mind with Grandview is that you aren't just getting a great school--you are getting a great community and a true neighborhood school. We are able to walk to any number of our friends and neighbors homes for gatherings, and it's a regular occurrence for us to be walking down the street and my son to see his classmates (and even teachers and staff). Bellevue's walkability, community garden, community potlucks, and a closeness we had formed with some residents and young families here, are literally the reasons why we were strongly considering moving from Fort Thomas to Bellevue. Then, when we met members of the Board of Education and Robb Smith, the superintendent, we were sold. Grandview's staff has been nothing but supportive of the kids I've seen coming and going, from Daphne (the crossing guard) knowing each kid by name, to Mrs. Young and Mr. Fuller high fiving and greeting each kid coming in with a smile and/or high five. We're glad we made the jump, and look forward to many more years of our family being Tigers. #ChooseBellevue

The School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is home to 1400 students and is the only…read morepublic K-12 art school in the United States. Grades K-3 are admitted by application and grades 4 and up must also audition for admission. Pupils outside of the Cincinnati Public Schools system can attend for a tuition fee; those inside county can attend for free. The school has three large performance venues: - The Corbett Theater (seats 750) - The Mayerson Theater (seats 300) - The Black Box Theater (seats 130) The Corbett Theater stage has high ceilings which allow for "flying" actors, as well as an orchestra pit that sinks down to another level of the building! In addition to the stage, SCPA has courses in their scenery and prop room. Students create and build about 95% of the stage. The convenient location of the stage shop allows them to move scenery on and off the stage with ease. The art and dance rooms have a wall of windows which overlook 12th Street, Music Hall and Washington Park. Equipped with six dance studios, students can rehearse in this studio knowing their show can be replicated, step for step, in the Corbett Theater, as the two venues are identical in size. Many of the studios are heavily insulated so that loud classes will not disturb another. The school building has a very modern design with industrial elements and bright colors. Massive pieces of student artwork hang in the hallways. My favorite detail about the school is their students: they appeared happy and focused. In contrast to other public schools, all of the SCPA pupils were dressed nicely for class with combed hair; no one was wearing pajamas.

Crystal Clear has come to the elementary school that I work at for the last several years. We bring…read moreCrystal Clear in to run a science festival for about 550 students. As the teacher who runs the science festival, I work first hand with Crystal Clear. Michelle, the owner and the one who runs the program at the school, is the best! All I had to do was contact Michelle and she took care of everything! She gave me explicit directions on the set up that I needed for the big day and how many volunteers that I needed. Michelle came to the school the afternoon before and set everything up. The day of the science festival she gathers the entire school in one location and gets the kids pumped up with science terminology, experiments, and great rapport! She really gets the kids excited about science and the day they are about to have. She calls kids to the front and gets them involved in the learning. Then each grade comes back for 30-40 minutes to complete science rotations. Each rotation allows the kiddos to get hands on and explore science in a fun way. She keeps things organized by playing a chime to indicate that students need to rotate to the next rotation. At the end of the day, Michelle cleans up her stations. I would recommend this outreach to all as the kiddos not only learned but had a blast!
