We searched within a 75 miles radius for someone who could remove a growth (wart maybe?) from our pup's face for a reasonable cost It was growing in size (over years) and was beginning to obstruct vision. Our normal vet quoted us $1,100 - 1,500 for the procedure (looks like a simple snip) so that was a definite no-go. Dr. Spencer took a look at it and within minutes said it was not a problem at all and could be done with ease. The entire team of ladies were so kind and obviously love animals. My pup is super friendly and they spoiled him with treats during the consult. The front desk lady was so accommodating and found a window to fit my pup into the schedule for the mini surgery the same week?! The procedure was no muss, no fuss (took less than 15 minutes) and it costs a fraction of what our normal vet was going to charge. No hidden fees, no "fee for processing the fee" here. The compassion when we suddenly had to make the decision to end our precious Luke's suffering. This is the seventh dearest 4 legged friend I've lost in 40 years. Something I've noticed, It gets harder, and harder saying goodbye. My wife and I have been crying since 3pm, it's 8pm now, no dinner, no nothing, just tears. Knowing we'll never see our sweet "Luke" in this life again, is gut wrenching. He was something special, I know all pet owners say something similar. But, in fact he was very special. He had more facial expressions than any of my other 4 legged besties. He and I would have conversations and in his own special way we'd communicate. He'd wake me up every morning, at the same time every day, with his cold nose on my back or arm. Who's going to do that, now that he's gone. Anyway Art Spencer was very kind, patient and understanding as was Barbara and the other young lady (who's name escapes me). They were all very kind and understanding in our time of grief. read more

I had a 11-year old cat who desperately needed dental work done. They worked with me to get her in quickly when it became apparent she couldn't wait until her scheduled appointment. They were the only vet that wasn't 1 1/2 hours away that could fit her in. They did an excellent job letting me know an estimate of the cost ahead of time. On the day of surgery they told me all the relevant info up front, including extra fees and why they might happen. For the care aspect: Their main vet can appear to not spend time with your pet, but really he has a crazy amount of experience being a vet and can quickly tell what is wrong. He knew what needed to be done within 2-3 minutes, we set a plan and that was it. Simple. Day after surgery I picked my cat up and brought her home, she wasn't fully out of anesthesia yet and started clawing at her mouth which caused alot of bleeding and freaked me out badly. I rushed her back to their office and they offered to keep her overnight to watch her again so she didn't hurt herself more. I was so relieved and thankful! The staff are all pleasant and take the time to explain things to you in a kind manner. Many front office staff can be brusque and even rude when you ask questions but I encountered nothing but kindness and professionalism at this vet. I'm glad I took others suggestions and brought my cat here. We will be returning for additional care of my other pets too. read more

Art does a great job at what he does, caring for an animal. However, sometimes his people skills falls short, especially after a euthanasia visit. The first time I called art out to euthanize my mini horse Awesome, he was great. He assessed her injuries and we made the expected decision to put her to sleep. Art had his tech make the final injection and they respectfully allowed a bit of time for me to feel she had passed fully in my heart. The bill was in the mail the next afternoon. The second mare I had called to euthanize was 34, she'd been seen by a different vet earlier in the day for colic with the instructions of "if she declines further than she was when I got here, it's likely best to have her put down" I made that call around 2, and spent the time between when I called and the time I was supposed to have art show up. We led my mare into the grave we'd dug, and art and his vet tech (a different one from the first visit) were joking and commenting on the mule they'd visited just before me was 48 and how awful it looked. The vet tech came to make the injection and I mentioned softly that she had been seen earlier in the day to try and save her. The tech looked up and told me I should have saved myself the trouble and put her down then. Melody came down and I held her until she passed. Once the injections had been given the tech left her side, and watched from above. While Melody was still in my arms with me crying, the tech said "I know this isn't a good time, but could we get paid tonight?" I understand not taking payments, most vets don't. I wish they had handled her death a little bit more sensitively and given me and my family just a little bit of time. I would have been fine with delivering payment the next morning, like I did with Awesome, but they pulled us away from Melody to get paid as soon as possible. read more

I just moved in the area and Scott Valley Vet. is 1/2 mile away from me. My chihuahua had an accident and needed to get a examine. I called to make an appointment for my dog and I was declined. I could not believe it. The staff was rude to me. They said they are not accepting anymore patients. What Vet does not take in hurt animal. I guess another vet will be glad to see my chihuahua and accept my money. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Dr. Art Spencer's veterinary clinic for over 20 years and have only experienced the very highest level of care and compassion from him and his team. Over the years, the staff at the clinic has changed from time to time and, I'm happy to say that whenever someone does not perform his or her job according to Dr. Spencer's high standards, he or she is let go immediately. Bad hires happen, but I appreciate that Dr. Spencer does not tolerate the improper care of animals or poor customer service. That said, I am happy that some of the staff of Scott Valley Veterinary have been there for so many years that they are like family and we love them dearly for taking such good care of us and our pets. read more

We've used Scott Valley Veterinary Clinic as our vet for over 20 years, which included 2 German Shepherds and multiple cats. During that time we've dealt with euthanasia(s), routine vet care, surgeries, as well as frequent boarding services at "the doggie hotel." We continue to use SVVC for our current shepherd, Bert (with an E). These are good folks. I know that Dr. Spencer would like to retire, but the rest of us just won't let him. read more
