The cooked meats are freshly sliced and are of excellent quality, they also do a lovely range of pork pies. The fresh meat is again of fantastic quality and it always looks good, there's nothing worse than seeing meat that is turning dark around the edges and looks as though it has been there all week. There is a wide range of sausages and the pork and leek are delicious. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, if they don't know the answer, then they will fetch one of the butchers out to advise. I only ever went in to the J.Grimes shop for the family-sized pork pies, but I have always noticed they are also a butchers, so recently I have started to buy meat from there and it is very good quality. I always bought meat from Asda and Tesco, but it doesn't come anywhere close to the fresh meat from J.Grimes. I recommend the shop to anyone, the staff are friendly and patient (it does get very busy) and the place is spotlessly clean.

They tend to carry larger joints or gammons in stock, so if you are feeding the 5 thousand at home, there is no need to make a special order. They claim not to have changed the basic recipe in 100 years and you can really taste the difference! Truly the greatest pies ever tasted. The shop is a little old-fashioned and the food tastes like good, honest, homecooked goods. The cakes may not all be uniform in size - like those mass produced in factories for supermarkets - but nor do they taste like they have just rolled off a production line and into a cellophane wrapper. A selling point at Beans is the fill your own trifle dish. You take along your own trfle dish and they fill it with goegoeus jelly and custard goodness. What could be more simple or more tasty? Please don't be put off by the staff - you will NEVER see any of them crack a smile! It is a running joke with locals that if ever beans employs a happy, smiling new counter assistant the customers always mutter she won't last long. I've no idea why they are all so sullen but my grandad maintains that it has been like that ever since he was a boy - so maybe it is tradition now!
