Although not the traditional way to eat jerk chicken and roti chicken because it comes with random fix-ins such as cheese, tomatoes, corn and others, I really enjoy Scotty Bons' menu! Large portions and flavourful add ons. I love to add the chutney, scotty pickle and creamy sauces. Only downside is I would prefer if they used bone in chicken for the jerk items. I've also tried the chicken roti. The filling, sauce, chickpeas and potatoes are delish but the roti bread itself could be lighter and softer. A few times I've ordered the roti felt more like a thin pita instead of a roti. Parking at the Markham location can be difficult as it is off the main road (Hwy 7) which is busy at all hours of the day so there's no avoiding that and there are only so many spaces. read more

Reviewing this for takeout specifically as I was visiting from out of town: The food was jam packed into the pie tray with plenty of rice, veggies, and meat. Each item seemed to complement each other and had you wanting to take one bite after the other. The chicken was very soft and flavorful, the rice had a nice texture and you could tell it was made in flavorful spices, and the veggies were nice and creamy. The tropical hot sauce was the icing on the cake, or in this case, the bowl. I wish I ordered a spicier sauce because the medium felt more like a step up from mild but not quite medium. My one complaint regarding this is that because they are served in pie trays with plastic covers, there's no real way of hearing this back up unless you have plates. So be aware of this if you're ordering this for delivery at a hotel and be sure to ask your hotel for plates. Wow really flavourful food! I really enjoyed the flavours in the dishes we had. This is a smaller place with just a couple of benches for eating in but there is a larger picnic table outside. We had goat curry and jerk chicken dishes. Both were good but I think the jerk chicken was a bit better. Half curried rice, and rice and peas. And, half curried goat and half jerk chicken (thigh meat). To begin, disclaimer: Homemade curried goat is serious comfort food for my family. This rendition at Scotty Bons was not too bad. This curried goat appears to be pressure cooked, so the meat texture becomes different. It feels a bit over soft and mashed up. Not anything close to cooking it in a pot low and slow where it remains tender, unbroken down and meaty. And as for the curry taste, all the curry encountered in the meal (in the curry channa, mostly aloo/potato and very little channa), the rice and the goat, the curry tastes like "it was sprinkled on top" as we say. Meaning the love and time needed to caramelize and toast up the curry in oil sauteed alonside the garlic and onions, was not done here. It makes a huge difference, if you know, you will see such difference. But still, for take out, the food is very tasty, overall. The jerk though was really nicely succulent. Boneless jerk thigh meat with jerk that has that authentic, freshly made spice mix that you could taste was not out of a bottle. The spicy, hot sauce you can select after as a dressing -- was aahmaazing! Creamy, tasted of scotch bonnet -- not your typical vinegary based hot sauce ((a huge personal pet peeve, I hate --like st Louis vinegary hot sauce, Grrr)), but with a respectable kick of heat! Depending on the size of the pieces, the jerk chicken bowl has two to three pieces of well seasoned jerk chicken. You can choose saffron rice or traditional rice and peas. You can also choose to add corn salad, coleslaw, Curried potato and chickpeas, cilantro, jalapenos, hot sauce/creamy lime sauce/bbq sauce. You can choose to include all of those if you want. The bowl could easily be shared between two people. Spice level: the jerk chicken was a higher level of mild spicy but not hot. The creamy hot sauce, which is put on in 'dabs', is very spicy but now intolerable. White-folk and people who didn't grow up eating spicy food might find the food very spicy. We also had the jerk chicken sandwich. It was perfect. It tasted amazing, and it was a very reasonable price. Very filling. I think the sweet corn and creamy coleslaw perfectly complimented the jerk chicken. If I run by next time, I could just get the jerk sandwhich and Id be happy. Nice & clean little spot almost wasted since there;s hardly any capacity to eat in. Scotty Bons seems to be geared toward servicing the take-out and delivery app markets with a streamlined menu of Caribbean titles. The staff seemed to be Filipinos. I went with the Jerk Chicken Roti. There's a choice of rice fillings and I chose their signature Lemon-Garlic Fried Rice because it sounded like an interesting change up (IIRC the other choice was standard Rice & Peas) and added Hot Sauce. The Roti was very short & thick, The prep person piled the Rice into a heap that was too tall & narrow so the sauce couldn't seep into it very much and the Chicken pieces rolled off the sides. The way the wrap was assembled worked against the finished product because the meat & sauce fell off the rice mountain so the outer edges were better than the middle. I found the taste somewhat flat. The Chicken was decent but I couldn't pick up any version of Jerk seasoning and it wasn't as tender as I'd expect. The Rice was also kind of weak, although toward the end it did build a bit of a nice garlicky aftertaste. I thought there was very little meat for the price charged, less than half of what I'd get at Alwyn's, and perhaps less than a $8 wrap at Naan Kabob. I noticed the same thing with customer ahead of me who was getting the bowl. Not bad by any means, but not something I'd chose again. Probably would have worked a little better in a bowl without the Roti. Service was OK, both staff members were pleasant and I noticed they were very flexible with the other customer.s substitution requests. Someone who likes very mild seasoning or prefers less meat in their Roti might be more enthusiastic about it. I loved the jerk chicken roti. The spice is just tolerable (as good jerk would be), the flavors are just right and the portion is HUGE!! I could only finish half of the roti before I threw in the towel and had the rest for lunch the next day. One of the best rotis that I've ever had. Be warned that there are only two bar seating areas available, with one of them in front of the door. My friend who lives in the west end told me about Scotty Bons and I had to try it the same day cause how could I not know about a food spot in my own hood. Looking at the few photos online, since it's still fairly new (they just celebrated their one year anniversary July 5), it all was very attractive already with the stand out decor and different offerings. Walking in, everything matched what I previewed and a likkle bit more. The space is open and welcoming just like the service. Upon walking in, the 2 ladies at the counter acknowledged us while they were helping another customer and putting together take out orders which gave me a chance to check out the whole place including the menu. The choices are simple but presented as a twist on what is usually available. For the commonly known dishes such as jerk chicken or curry goat, you can get it in a 'bowl' or wrapped in a roti. The bowl option to me is a spin on the word used in salad shops but it just means the usual of rice & peas. Next on the menu are the sandwiches that I was looking forward to because there was seafood. Here is a breakdown of what I ordered: Jerk chicken bowl - the chicken surprised me because it was flattened and boneless. I guess I'm a traditionalist and prefer jerk chicken to include skin and bones. The flavour was good though. Our server asked if we wanted veggies with it and of course we said yes. There was a generous portion of coleslaw that I found too creamy but that's just my personal preference. Curry goat roti - this had to be eaten with a knife and fork because the filling was just oozing out of the roti shell. A nice touch that they do here is putting the roti on the panini press so it's not too mushy. I prefer Trini roti's with dhal (split pea) crumbs everywhere. For the goat, I found it to be too 'herbally' tasting but again that's just me. Cajun fish sandwich - this was made before the other 2 dishes so it sat for at least 5 minutes making it a bit mushy even though it was put on the panini grill. I didn't find much of a Cajun or any flavour really on the fish so I probably wouldn't order this again. Also, I wouldn't ask for cheese as one of the toppings either since fish and cheese together can sometimes be weird. Jerk shrimp sandwich - the shrimp was great, cooked well and great jerk taste. I enjoyed the lime sauce a lot! Another topping is corn salsa with pineapple which I'm not a fan of but only cause I don't particularly like fruit, especially not mixed in with savoury food. Everything was very fresh and made to order. There is limited seating with only 2 bar style 'tables' (basically a chunk of a tree with the natural groove kept in which is cool) that equaled to about maybe 10-15 seats inside. 2 picnic tables were outside so that's more seating when the weather is nice. I would definitely visit Scotty Bons again and recommend it to others. It's always nice to find and support unique gems with good service in the GTA. read more
