Integrated biologist prepares to give vials of live grunion eggs to us so we can see the eggs hatch. Next we hit the beach.

Showed up during the first new moon of grunion mating season. As did about 50 others who were interested in the marine scientist's midnight talk at Sumner Auditorium, followed by a wait on the beach for the little silversides to arrive. Scripps staff and volunteers were organized, upbeat, and happy to give the public a view of their work and of the protected marine area along LaJolla Shores, The fishies live and breed only in the surface waters and beaches of Southern California and Baja. When they run, it's always at night and right after high tide. Scripps/aquarium staff did a great job informing us about the way to behave at water's edge to minimize our impact during the grunion's horney Spring break from the Pacific. One volunteer became the Paul Blart of the event - herding offenders out of the surf, and chastising the over eager after they chased some of the 6" fish back into the waves. It was fun, thanks not only to Mother Nature, but to one of her biggest fans, Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

The students here are amazing there is so much opportunity here for professional research and career opportunities. I work here once a week and the development I see with earth, ecology, oceanology and geography, is fantastic we have brilliant scientist making a contribution to science, education and business.

While traversing the newly-built path that takes you down to Scripps Beach at La Jolla Shores yesterday, I passed a beautiful building and admired it whole heartedly. As the hot afternoon progressed and I ran back and forth between the ocean, I looked up from the beach below and saw that up at this Scripps Forum, they were primping for a wedding and a fancy one at that. Now I have been to Scripps Institute of Oceanography many times, but had no idea they held weddings there! Before leaving the beach and venturing up the stairs, I made sure to try and fix myself up enough to look presentable and go hang around to see if I could get enough of a story for a Yelp or Stringers at least. The wedding guests outside on the terrace patio were sweet and answered many of my prying questions. The happy couple was Michael and Sarah and I imagine they had some kind of relation to this campus although I don't know exactly what. The wedding crowd looked prosperous and older. Despite my wet hair and the oily residue on my skin, I managed to learn about the Scripps Seaside Forum. Yes-wedding and social events are held here-right up against the edge of the cliffs over-looking La Jolla Shores-an extraordinary, ocean-front venue. This conference center facility is located right in the heart of Scripps Institution of Oceanography just south of Scripps Pier, and seems like a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The breathtaking view makes the Scripps Seaside Forum a wonderful location, however, a guest told me that inside, the building is green and LEED Certified. It was awarded LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in August 2009. The Rating includes site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, and an innovative design process. The interior is high tech-with all the latest in computers, technology and gadgets. Along with all this are the several awards from Orchids & Onions and The American Institute of Architects, an affiliation with an excellent University, and that seaside perch! Despite my improper attire and sandy feet, there is no doubt in my mind that Scripps Forum is 5 YELP STARS all the way, baby!

How has no one reviewed scripps so far? It's probably one of the most beautiful campuses in the world - or at least I think so - and an amazing program. One of Al Gore's top ten places in the world! Come check out the campus - email a prof and go see some labs! And if you can find someone with a key, go explore the pier! Also if you know someone at SIO, have them bring you to the weekly happy hour. $1 beers - Karl Strauss keg- free snacks, pool table and it's next to the water.

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF STUDENT DEBT…read more Welcome to Graduation season. The time of year when we dress our foremost scholars in medieval religious cloaks and then act surprised when they can't form a straight line. Who thought it was a good idea to put these adults in robes and funny hats?! You know, those square mortarboard hats. At some point back in time did somebody see some bricklayers and say, "That. That's the look we want for our brightest minds?" So, on this day, we honor these devout construction workers. Next is the guest speaker, for the big inspo talk. Given by a guy who went here 30 years ago when it cost fifteen dollars. A rando cereal billionaire named Captain Crunch who'll tell you to "follow your dreams." Meanwhile you're thinking, my dream is to get any job to avoid moving back with (no-longer-closeted) Mom. And the tassel. You're in this sacred ceremony, and the big moment is... some fuzzy string switches sides? The Chancellor of Hogwarts will go, "By the power vested in me, you may now... transform." No one knows why we do this. Four+ years of caffeine-fueled memorizing, tens of thousands of dollars, and it's... flip that string over, you're a whole new person now. The whole time you've got "Pomp and Circumstance" playing on repeat. Its like the music you'd hear as a king gets crowned, not as Seymour from Slusher Hall waddles across the stage in a wrinkled gown. At the end you get to throw the hat. The first time this happened was at the Naval Academy. They got new officer hats, so no longer needed the old ones. It makes sense... new jobs, new hats. For the rest of us, keep these for pics with Grandpa Jack and Gramargarita. Anyway, that's graduation in a nutshell. Just a bunch of weird traditions that we've all agreed is how it should be done. And it's kinda beautiful. Pro tip: Congrats to the USD class of 2026. Ceremonies take place May 21-24 2026. The primary venues are: Jenny Craig Pavilion, Founders Chapel and Shiley Theatre. All graduations follow the above format.

The Catholic university is a blend of historic architecture, lush natural surroundings, and a vibrant student atmosphere! It's definitely a peaceful space, with botanical gardens, tree-lined walkways, and beautiful fountains that encourage focus, tranquility and serenity for every student on campus! The campus almost feels like a postcard, featuring 16th-century Plateresque architecture, a style of the Spanish Renaissance- paying homage to both San Diego's Catholic heritage and the Universidad de Alcalá in Spain. Definitely recommend checking this campus out, it's a great place to walk through and enjoy those stunning panoramic views of Mission Bay!

I had a horrible experience trying to take Microbiology. The lab aspect was a complete nightmare…read morebecause the lab company UCSD works with is incredibly disorganized. I'm currently taking a Chemistry course. This week, I spent one hour learning chemistry on Canvas, and five hours trying to get my textbook and homework platform to link with Canvas. Canvas provides no instructions whatsoever. The professor just tells you to contact the textbook company. The textbook website says to click on a link on Canvas. Unfortunately that link in Canvas takes you to a blank page. Other students are having problems too. This is my second horrible experience with UCSD Extension. If you want to learn science, find another place to take your classes. If you want to spend hours trying to resolve technical problems, this is a great option. I wish UCSD Ext would not outsource.

I took Microbiology with Lab 169818 at UC San Diego and it was the most disorganized experience…read more Lessons are everywhere. Not organized at all. Mixed up and repeated information the learning sections. The videos provided for learning are not the teacher speaking and are random people/"professors" but some of them can't even pronounce the words and sound like they have NO CLUE what they are talking about. It's quite confusing what you really need to know for the class because the modules say one thing but the PowerPoints, reading, and videos talk about that plus way more. It's very much so an overload. It's like no one took the time to perfect or even proofread this class setup and modules. Science lab kit is way overpriced for what you get. Like really for $450 you couldn't add 2 paper clips, alcohol, extra masks, more candles, extra Petri dishes with agar, and extra microbes (for any errors). We are not experts here and being left alone to do the labs especially at the beginning is trial and error. For me I accidentally punctured the agar with the loop and ruined my whole sample and it was just shit out of luck unless I wanted to buy more myself (only about $10 but I just paid $450 for this kit so why should I have to do that?). Not everything in the kit was used. It was a huge waste of money. The class is kind of "at your own pace" so you could totally finish early and wing it! I guess if you have the money and don't really want to learn but just need the class- go for it. I would never recommend this class or school to anyone. It was a terrible experience and this is coming from someone who already has a degree and has taken MANY online classes.

The entire campus is flat, super easy to walk, and feels very safe. The buildings look new and are incredibly clean -- I mean really clean! Their athletic programs are top-notch. We spent the whole afternoon with the team and coaches, and everyone was welcoming and professional. And get this -- tuition for the first year is only $9,300, and the following year is ZERO dollars! Say whaaaat?! Huge thank you to the coach for taking the time to meet with us and even treating us to lunch. Overall, Mesa College really stood out -- great people, great campus, and great opportunities!

Mesa is the worst. just in general. I was gonna take a class…read morefor the first semester but I couldn't because mesa was not accepting the form my high-school was sending them. my highschool sent one FOUR TIMES for saying its ok for me to attend Mesa to get extra credits and this went on for a MONTH while it keeps saying my high school needs to send a form and my school keeps saying they did and keeps showing me they are sending the form so i know it was not my high-school fault and everytime I tried calling the school no one picked up for THREE HOURS, if they did even pick up, a lady picks up and always send me to someone else because she dont want to be helping me and do her JOB, then am back on hold for at least another HOUR till someone picks up and then hangs up. I know its not a glitch in the system because I can HEAR someone Breathing or someone talking in the background. this made me not be able to get into a class because no one accepted the form on MESAS SIDE. the same thing happened when I tried getting in on the second semester but this time I went into the school because I was not gonna deal with the phone crap trying to get a hold of someone. so I made my STEP FATHER take off work for the day to go talk to the student services, the front desk people are polite and I told them what happen with the phone stuff thwy apologize and said they will talk with the staff about it, they DIDNT... because I tried calling for a question about the website for Mesa. then after awhile I got into the class I wanted, first day, I came early to find the class and it was a SUB because the real teacher couldn't come in because he broke his hand, the sub wrote down everything we needed to do till we see eachother the next meeting day also which the teacher did NOT ADD ANY WEBSIGHT TO FIND CANVAS on the board on thw first day so i had to CALL THE SCHOOL AGAIN, WAITED A HOUR and had to give my information to another lady becauseonce again the firsr lady never does ANYTHING and had to get a email to my professor to get everything done. when I came in the next time I came early once more, also had everything DONE because I had to take a bus. I got onto canvas on my laptop because i haven't login to it on my laptop because i did my work on my home computer. once I am in canvas it said I am not ENROLLED IN ANY CLASSES so I went BACK to student services ask a man whats going on and showed my id, he said I got KICKED OUT BY THE PROFESSOR and said NO REASON ON THE COMPUTER...I was PISSED because I did the work and was not late and came to school...so I waited for ANOTHER SUB and she didnt know what happened or why the teacher KICKED ME...so I left that class even tho the sub said I can stay, I didnt want to stay because all this work for me just to get kicked OUT???. so I wrote the sub why did he kicked me out and I had to wait a few hours for him to reply, which with him I find reasonable because he got a broken hand and once I got the response he said I was not there on the first day...which I WAS because if I wasn't there on the first day how did I send him a picture of HIS white board of what the sub put on the first day sent to him because when asking for the canvas link I send the picture along with it, so I basically GAVE UP and left this school and NEVER COMING BACK to Mesa to deal with all this drama. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL.

I graduated from this college at UCSD!…read more DAMN those MMW Classes but I learned a lot! Hi Professor Chang! ACADEMICS***** ERC MMW Classes are super easy! No need to study or buy textbook! just show up to midterm and final and you should be okay! (I do not recommend this for your other classes...learned this the hard way...) ERC housing is super close to RIMAC gym and arena if you like working out. The housing is also super close to the Village transfer housing which was super nice and new when I lived there! There is a sushi Bistro restaurant that you can use your dining dollars at nearby, a market which used to have the best Iced White Mochas on campus (at least when I went here)! Cafe V also had pretty good chipotle mayo for their burgers. Not really many places to study at ERC :( I always ended up "studying" all the way in Warren college in the computer labs (SHOUTOUT TO EBU3B you da real MVP)! Also cuter dudes studying in the Engineering section of Geisel. Parking is pretty much non-existent unless you're lucky enough to snag a spot at Pangea Parking Garage or Hopkins! Good luck! The counselors here are AWESOME! Definitely willing to work with their students. They understand that everyone learns differently and willing to set goals and plans! YAYYY! If you're applying to UCSD and don't know which college to choose ERC is not bad! I would also consider Marshall, Muir or Warren! Def not 6th college lol. Good luck kids!
