Let me start by saying, this review is long overdue and our child is only in Pre-K!…read more The Evans School is more than a school, it's a family. At the core of this family is The Evan's School's "21 values." These 21 values serve as the foundation for the children's development. While most kids who attend a private school in La Jolla come from hard-working established families, the goal is aimed at developing the children into good-hearted and kind human beings.   Every morning starts with the pledge of allegiance and The Evans Pledge, " I promise myself today, to feel, to think, to speak and to act, only in accord with those things which are good and true and beautiful." How's that to start your day? ;) In a discussion with a group of well-educated parents whose children also attend Evan's, the question came up about investing in your child's development in earlier vs. later years. Everyone agreed that it's all about investing in the foundation of learning now in the younger years. This sets the stage for learning and gives them the tools they need to breeze through junior high school, high school and college if they choose to attend. Several Evans Alumni go on and attend prestigious colleges and many go straight to entrepreneurial endeavors or perhaps lives of service in the military. Regardless of what the student ends up doing later in life, the foundation for learning and The Evans values are engrained in each and every student so that they go on to become GOOD HUMANS.  If you're still reading and this resonates with you, then I suggest you set up a private tour of the school. That being said, I'm writing this during the COVID-19 pandemic and the kids are currently staying home. Unlike other schools, The Evans School immediately shifted gears and went to online learning leveraging Zoom and other software platforms so the kids could resume the much-needed structure and environment that they crave. I'm not going to lie, this was also much needed for our own sanity having at least one child attending school Monday - Friday.  I could not possibly give The Evans School a high enough rating. It's the type of place that creates raving fans and most importantly good humans. Alumni now send their children to the school. They continually honor grandparents and our military. It's not for everyone as it is more traditional in a world that seems to have abandoned more traditional values. I personally chose a path of service as a firefighter/paramedic and entrepreneur. My wife and I will continue to do whatever it takes to send our son to this amazing school because our priority is developing a strong foundation in learning while simultaneously instilling the values that create extraordinary humans.

From the moment we stepped through those school gates, we knew we had found something truly special. Dedicated Teachers and Staff The heart of any great school lies in its educators, and SJDLS boasts an exceptional team of teachers and staff. Their commitment to nurturing young minds goes beyond the classroom. They inspire, challenge, and guide our children, fostering not only academic growth but also character development. We've witnessed firsthand the tireless efforts they put into creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Academic Excellence At SJDLS, excellence is the standard. Our children have thrived academically, thanks to the rigorous curriculum and personalized attention they receive. The teachers tailor their teaching methods to suit each student's learning style, ensuring that no child is left behind. As parents, we appreciate the emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills--the very qualities that will serve them well in their future endeavors. Values and Character Formation Education isn't just about textbooks and exams; it's about shaping compassionate, responsible individuals. SJDLS excels in this aspect. Our kids learn not only math, science, and literature but also the values of respect, faith, and caring. These lessons extend beyond the classroom walls, influencing their interactions with peers, family, and the wider community. We're proud to see our children grow into empathetic and socially conscious young adults. A Bright Future Ahead Our oldest daughter, now on the cusp of her senior year, has blossomed at SJDLS. Her 4.2 GPA reflects not only her academic prowess but also her unwavering dedication. As for our son, a freshman, he's already making his mark. We're confident that the solid foundation laid by SJDLS will propel them toward any college they choose. Their dreams are within reach, and we owe it all to this remarkable institution. A Blessing to Our Family and Community SJDLS isn't just a school; it's a blessing. It's where friendships are forged, talents are discovered, and futures are shaped. As parents, we couldn't ask for more. Our gratitude extends not only to the faculty but also to the entire SJDLS community--the parents, volunteers, and fellow students who make this place feel like home.

We spent a lot of time at libraries and often picked up family magazines. At one point, we attended Clairemont Family Day, where TCPS had a booth. I spoke with Mrs. Szalay, then the kindergarten teacher (now assistant), and soon after we toured the school and attended its big annual event. That project, created by all grades around a theme, showed us how special the school was. What stood out most was the small size, the attention children receive, and the focus on social-emotional growth, which mattered most to us. From the beginning, TCPS felt like an extension of our home. The values we taught our children were reinforced at school, so we never worried about having to "unteach" conflicting lessons. Now, with a sixth grader, fifth grader, third grader, and kindergartner, we've seen our kids blossom. They're challenged, guided, and cared for. They've benefited from mentoring with older students, from learning public speaking starting in kindergarten, and from being truly heard while also nudged to grow. A major strength of TCPS is communication. Parents can connect with teachers daily at drop-off, pick-up, or by email. Teachers are responsive and proactive, even asking for updates if a child's morning isn't going well so they can be prepared. In addition, we have scheduled conferences before school starts, mid-year, and year-end. These conversations allow teachers to understand each child's personality, strengths, and goals. That personal approach is possible because of the small classes and school size. Our children love being at TCPS. They love learning and growing, and the school has not only nurtured that but also challenged them to reach their potential. In middle school, the transition to multiple teachers and heavier workloads has been significant, but our son isn't left to struggle--he's guided step by step and supported just as we would support him at home. TCPS truly feels like family. Parents are encouraged to be active participants--as room parents, on committees, at events, chaperoning field trips, or volunteering in class. I see this as a blessing, and I'm glad to contribute. In fact, TCPS has meant so much to us that we relocated to the Clairemont area just to be closer to the school. Every teacher also brings their own personality and passions into the classroom, making learning fun and engaging through unique projects. We honestly don't know where we'd be without TCPS. For us, it has been more than a school--it has been an extension of our family.

Our principal, Andrea Sleet, is as warm and compassionate as she is devoted to her students' learning, safety and emotional wellbeing. She is deeply engaged with students, teachers, staff and families by greeting students as they arrive each day, regularly visiting classrooms, hosting principal coffee meetings and a book club with parents, and attending all PTA meetings and school events. She is a celebrity on campus and the students adore her. The community at Del Mar Hills is friendly and inclusive and the PTA sponsors many events throughout the year to provide opportunities for students and their families to gather (e.g. an ice cream social, Halloween Spooktacular, world festival, and the family carnival). Fourth through sixth grade students are deeply involved in these events and are encouraged to create and oversee games, as well as to construct and guide students through an impressive haunted house at our Halloween Spooktacular.
