I'm an advanced rider and my partner came who is a beginner, and the guides were super helpful providing him advice on saddle and rein position, etc. Similarly, they did a good job helping others who were not taking instructions very well. I see others on yelp have criticized this business for this very thing, but I suspect that people are upset bc they don't take constructive criticism well- these guides are giving instructions to keep the horses and humans safe we would definitely come back, the views are magnificent! read more

I am finally speaking up about my experience in hopes that no other person or child experiences what I did. The ride was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous. The horse I rode was an angel. BUT the ride almost didn't happen for me. Why? Because one one of the workers abused me by yelling at me in a loud, condescending, and absolutely terrifying way that left me with fright, anger, and tears in my eyes that I had to hide behind my sunglasses so that my daughter and her cousin wouldn't see. It was infuriating and 3 months later I am still a bit distraught. It was my very first time EVER on a horse and still to this day I am not totally sure what I did wrong which prompted the worker to abuse me but I assure you I did nothing intentionally bad. Perhaps I pulled the reigns too far back. I am not sure and there was a language barrier as well so I did ask "what?" and had some confusion as to what he wanted me to do or not to do. I do not remember the worker's name. But I will never forget the anger, rage, and terror he spewed toward me. My cousin after the ride even told me he heard him yell at me. Whatever I did "wrong" there was no justification to be treated the way I did by this person. And for this I will never go back to this place nor will my child. The feeling I experienced after getting berated all the while trying to navigate a whole new feeling and experience of being on a horse for the FIRST time was overwhelming to say the least. I almost quit right there but I did not want to take away from my child's or family's experience. I also had looked forward to this adventure as I had gone through cancer treatment prior and what better way to celebrate than to ride a beautiful horse on beautiful Half Moon Bay...? THANK GOD there was another worker who was an absolute joy full of smiles and KIND who helped ease my angst and made the experience enjoyable. I'm glad I did it and completed it but BOY what a horrible horrible start. I hope this company takes a look at their workers and re-evaluates them because I will never return or suggest this place to anyone. I can NOT imagine if the person who yelled at me yelled at another person who was more vulnerable than I OR at a child god forbid. THIS is why I am finally writing something. I just had my family that went on the ride visit me recently and we were talking about the incident and my cousin's wife said ..."you know what, leave the review..what if that person treats a child like that in the future?" And so here I am letting people know that there is a worker out there who is totally completely out of line. I understand safety first BUT this was NOT the way in which to handle a situation not in dire need. The horse was at a standstill. I did not yank or do anything abrupt or out of line to warrant the horrid behavior spewed toward me. Even If the situation was dire or dangerous there should have been a totally different way to approach it. He ruined a part of a very meaningful experience. Great experience! I highly recommend adding this to your "things to do" list when you are in the Bay Area. If you enjoy horseback riding with beautiful beach views, this is the ranch you should definitely check out. I booked online, and once I did, they sent a confirmation along with all the information I needed. As long as you read and follow their instructions, everything goes smoothly. I truly do not understand why this place has low ratings. I am giving them five stars because the service, directions, and communication were clear and easy to follow, and the staff were incredibly nice. I am definitely coming back with friends and family who visit. I booked the trail and beach ride, and it was an amazing and memorable experience. The weather was sunny and perfect, not too hot, and the horses were beautiful and well trained. I loved the entire experience from beginning to end. A few notes: You are not allowed to bring bags or phones, so just leave them in your car and enjoy the ride and the views. It is incredibly refreshing and stress relieving. A professional photographer takes individual and group photos throughout the ride. The photos come out great both on the trail and on the beach. We saw some advertisements for Sea Horse Ranch online and were looking to doing something adventurous in half moon bay. Neither of us have ever ridden horses before, but the staff were extremely nice and accommodating, and were so helpful. When we started our rides the tour guides were also friendly and gave us tips for riding. The horses were all super friendly as well, and they didn't really need any direction so we were able to enjoy the views! We rode Soshana and Midnight who were sweeties. The trail starts at the barn and through some fields. Then we went through a through small river path which was super beautiful. The best part was of course walking straight onto the beach and seeing all the amazing views. I definitely recommend this experience for anyone who is looking for a scenic ride and trying horseback riding for the first time. The only thing to note is you can't bring your phone on the ride, and the pictures are $50+ extra, but they came out great (the photographer was very determined to get shots of each group)! read more

Not surprised after seeing the other reviews but had a very infuriating experience today sitting on the beach with my dog when this company led their tour of horseback riders within about two feet behind my dog and I. I didn't even have a chance to move out of the way because they came up behind me and I was only a few feet from the crashing waves in the other direction. Completely unnecessary, irresponsible and dangerous. Had my dog barked and been reactive this could have put me and the riders in danger. Our experience was extremely disappointing. The business had no problem taking our money and accepting prepayment, but when we arrived, they told someone in our group they couldn't ride because of their size. If there are weight or size restrictions, they should be clearly communicated before accepting payment--not after customers have already paid and traveled there. The way the situation was handled was disrespectful, embarrassing, and lacked any professionalism or empathy. A little honesty and compassion would have gone a long way. I absolutely love horseback riding and have gone many times elsewhere. I decided to do the the earlybird and I called to book. Ashley was nice and helpful. We arrived 30 minutes prior and was told directions and it went well. My horse literally was doing its own thing and the guide was literally blaming me. He was so passive aggressive. Being rude then being nice. He had me switch horses and was blaming me but the horses started fighting with each other. I literally said I didnt want to ride anymore. I am impressed with what a pleasant experience this was including for my 8 year olds. It was an easy check in, check out, almost with an old school feel. The horses were mellow & the guides super pleasant. They calmed one of my crying 8 year olds who was smiling ear to ear by the end of the ride. I appreciated that they took photos for us on our phones. It was nice to disappear into a device free afternoon at the edge of the world. I've been coming here semi-regularly but this last time was particularly frustrating with some rude guides. Even as someone who has ridden a decent amount in the past, the guides stressed me out and made a beautiful morning on the beach pretty unpleasant: 1. At one point, I was riding near the front directly behind the guide. He kept telling me to leave space between horses, so I needed to constantly pull back on my horse's reins (which I felt bad about) to leave a few feet of space since my horse liked to follow nose to tail. Later, when my horse was moved to the end of the line and I tried leaving space, another guide yelled that I shouldn't pull on the reins and just let the horse follow. Directly conflicting instructions. 2. Also when I was directly behind the lead guide, he asked me to pass him since he was going to stay back to help people out. He told me to pass on his left. I started to and my horse was already moving over, but it was happening too slow for him, so the guide moved over to the left instead to indicate I should pass to the right. However, because my horse was ALREADY starting to move to the left, his horse bumped my horse's face and he yelled "Use your eyes! Move there!" Unnecessarily rude and impatient. 3. Overall, the entire ride the guides just sound angry and frustrated. I understand that they're there for our safety and to pace the ride, but the constant yelling means I was on edge the whole time trying to appease the guides by controlling the horse (I was literally yelled at for going too fast, too slow, being on the left side, being on the right side, leaving space, not leaving enough space -- it got absolutely exhausting). And this must've been stressful for the horse too when he just wanted to follow the horse in front of him. Despite how much I enjoy riding, I think I'm finally done with Sea Horse ranch and will be looking for someplace else for trail rides. read more

We were quite satisfied w our 90 min ride on a crystal clear day in HMB. People complain about not being able to take photos, I can just imagine the stories the ranch has of people falling from horses while trying to take or pose for photos. It's a very simple, controlled line of 10 or so horses, lined nose to ass, that walk down the coast to the beach and back , thru a field, then a fairly high and narrow 24-30" deep creek. That's all, it's perfectly normal and a good experience, some horses lag then you have to trot at times when they catch up, as mine did , that too is normal and good practice to handle the bumps and feel in control. Safety is the main concern and they did a good job of that. The horses followed our direction well. We spoke w the wrangler quite a bit and he took some photos w our camera that were fine. I'm not around horses to know- but they seemed in pretty average shape, they looked like working animals. Not one that is being tended to by their loving single owner every day. read more

We had a great time at the ranch! Regardless of the not so great reviews, the lady and the ranch hands were educational and helpful going through the rules and expectations of us. The trek through the beautiful scenery to get to the beach was fun too! There was a little ravine the horses had to walk through and the lush bushes and trees made it interesting. It was scary at first when you sit on top of the horse because you're sitting up so high but the horses all seemed cooperative and gentle. Make sure you listen to the lady giving instructions on how to keep your feet in the stirrups and how to sink your butt into the saddle or you'll be sore! Luckily our group did what we were told so no one complained about a sore butt. Lol when you get off, your legs will feel a little wobbly and thighs a little sore but after you walk it off, you're back to feeling brand new. One thing I was kinda concerned about was the lodging/housing of the horses in the back... looked like old sheds and muddy playpens (whatever they're called) but who am I to say? He also would raise his voice & tell for me to calm down (I literally wasn't doing anything, he just saw that I was worried). Never coming back here. The star is only for the horse because she was awesome and very passionate. I booked an hour ride with my boyfriend since he'd never been horseback riding. I've gone elsewhere several times and DO NOT recommend going here (especially if you're a beginner). I understood the rule of not bringing purses/bags etc on the ride, but the fact that we weren't allowed to bring our phones was strange since other places allowed that. The wrangler "supposedly" helping me get ready to ride was super rude and yelled at me for not holding the ropes right. Again, I have a bit of experience; but this guy was an effin jerk who should be fired. When I tried asking how I should hold it, he scoffed at me and ignored me. The horse I had was ready to go on the trail (more like run away from him) and wanted to go right away. The jerk was snapping at me even though the horse was impatient and I didn't have control over it. The wrangler guiding the tour was rude, disrespectful, and physically abusive. There were two riders who didn't speak fluent English and he kept yelling at one of them AND grabbed the rope on her horse out of her hands since she wasn't understanding his instructions. I can understand the frustration, but YOU DO NOT treat paying customers like that!!! This guy is not guide/leader material and needs to do something else (like a new job). There was supposed to be a photographer but they didn't show up (which was whatever). The other guide was taking pictures on her phone and said she would send them to the numbers we provided (big surprise! Never got them). While we were riding to and back from the trail, I noticed a lot of old/worn out trailers around the stable/ranch/house and not to sound judgmental, but that seemed odd. And it made me think "is that why you didn't want us to bring our phones? Not to just get "more money" since you scam people with the 'professional pictures' but to not take pics on our own of the random trailers, uncared for horses, and anything else that could shut down your business?" That's super suspicious. This place is going to keep going downhill if they don't hire better wranglers/trainers, stop scamming customers, take better care of the horses, take better care of the property, learn customer service, and get rid of the current wranglers who hate their jobs. read more

I have never had such a horrible experience on a trail ride. The ranch is so poorly ran. The care of the horses is very questionable. I had a worker grab my ankle and twist it as hard as he could out of spite, everyone on the trail was being yelled and whistled at, and the old lady at the front is extremely condescending. Details: 1. Upon arrival the old lady with the raspy voice asks for the credit card we used to pay and our ID for "fraud" verification. The mother of a family of 4 next to us pulls out her ID and a credit card. However it didn't match since it's her husband's card but has the correct names on it. The lady says they can't ride unless they brought that same exact card with them. Well the mom didn't bring it cause they strictly require no purses, cell phones and bags on the ride. 2. After that encounter, the lady tells my husband to take off his hat because he has to wear a helmet (which is totally fine). My husband confirms with her that everyone has to wear it even if you have riding experience? The lady gets offended and says "well if you were a good rider you would know helmets are required" 3. You can't bring your cell phone on the trail ride, which is absolutely absurd. I have been on 20+ trail rides with different companies and have never had to put my cell phone in the car. If you want pictures u have to pay for them. 4. The tack they have on the horses is questionable and dangerous to both rider and horse. The saddle pads are falling apart and the the bridle/reigns are jerry-rigged 5. When I got on the horse, my stirrups were extremely long and I couldn't reach them. The worker got very frustrated and yelled at me for not immediately putting my feet in the stirrup. I told him they're too long I can't even reach them. He is visibly mad and aggressively grabs my left foot and puts them in the stirrup after shortening them. He then goes to the right side and shortens them. He grabs my right foot and ankle, then twist it and flexes it up as hard has he can. I yelp in pain and jerk my ankle back and he looks at me and walks away. I am still in disbelief and I know I will be feeling the aftermath of that for a few days. 6. During the whole trailer ride, the workers are yelling at everyone. It's not a peaceful ride. They're lucky they have that location by the beach or they would be out of business. read more

Fun excursion in Half Moon Bay. A friend and I booked a 90-minute package that included riding on the beach. Luckily it was just us 2 and no other customers, which definitely made the experience better. The scenery of the ride is OK. The most exciting parts are going through the river & the beach. Customers are not allowed to bring anything (not even phones) on the rides, which is an understandable rule. The tour guide will take 1 phone to take the photos for you. Which was nice, but most of the photos don't turn out that well. Our guide did not speak much English, which did lead to some communication issues. It would have been a better experience to have had an English speaker guiding us. Keep in mind, your back and your legs will most likely be in pain the following day (which is normal after horse riding). Keep in mind I had the correct posture the whole time. I went to the jacuzzi the next day and my muscles felt better. Overall, I did have a good time just being on a horse and riding on the beach on a beautiful day. read more

WORST experience I've ever paid for. I'm in shock at how this place is in business. Come here if you want to be publicly berated and humiliated in front of a group, or worse, get seriously injured. Do yourself a favor and read the bad reviews, they are legitimate experiences, and could very well be yours. If you chance it, at least have health insurance. They do not care if you get hurt, and in fact, they will do things that put you in danger out of sheer spite (because they seem to hate their jobs and you). You'd also have to accept their questionable tactics and aggressive verbal abuse throughout the ride. We started with a short 5 minute demo on steering with no context on how much you'll need to exert control during the supposedly easy trail ride. This is because it's a complete crapshoot depending on the horse you get, which explains the many 5 star reviews from folks who lucked out with calm horses). From the moment I got on my horse, I could tell that it was frustrated and rebellious - NOT qualities acceptable for a beginner-friendly trail ride horse. The wrangler at the front got going without saying a damn thing, and you were expected to just magically fall in line. Well, my horse wanted nothing to do with this formation, and would compulsively try to rush ahead by trotting to pass those in front. I tried to not let him do this, but this turned out to be an endless battle throughout the ride. Sometimes he'd "tailgate" so closely he would get slightly kicked by the back legs of the horse in front, or so close he could rest his head on the horse's rear. I would pull back the reins, but this didn't always work (he felt untrained and stubborn to me), or he'd sometimes stop completely and I'd get YELLED at by the wranglers. One time my horse stopped for a couple seconds on a muddy bank before entering a river that was belly-deep. This slight pause apparently ENRAGED the wranglers, because they shouted at the horse to go in Spanish, then without any warning for me (who was taken aback by their anger) whistled loudly and my horse jumped into the water and started frantically maneuvering in the muddy river left and right, almost causing me to slip off. My foot came out of the stirrup, which they didn't properly adjust, and you guessed it, I WAS THE ONE yelled at for this chaos. The wranglers could've had the common decency to give me some instruction on getting the horse moving without causing it to launch itself forward and downward into the water without any warning to me. They were very spiteful through the entire ride. If they weren't yelling at me, they were barking at someone else, or talking to you like you're an idiot (even if they weren't speaking fluent English and you were simply trying your best to understand). At one point BOTH wranglers were YELLING at me, one from the side, and one from ahead. Apparently I was moving my reins side-to-side too much? Even though I was only trying to appeased them in an effort to make my horse who had a mind of its own stay in line. They would shout "STOP DOING THIS OR THAT" and I would reply "but I'm not, he's doing that by himself" and they'd snap back at me past all the riders "YESSS YOU AAARRREEE!!!" They did this multiple times, targeting me, because I had the disgruntled horse. I simply did not pay to be harassed by drill sergeants who put their ego over any concern of my safety or basic human dignity. Another time, my horse and some others got seriously spooked by a dog bark. This time I was even closer to being thrown off by the extremely erratic movements, it was very scary. How does a trail horse get so easily spooked when dogs are often seen using the trail and the beach? Shouldn't this be concerning to the owners of a trail riding business??? These flighty animals are not meant for this. They looked unkempt, overworked, and on-edge. A few kept throwing their heads around in discomfort and frustration, or they'd stomp and turn. No wonder other reviews described people actually getting thrown off, and this is supposed to be a chill trail ride? WHAT A SCAM. read more

Very disappointing experience. I was turned away at the gate due to exceeding the weight limit. While I understand and respect safety policies, I was shocked that the owner, Willa, chose not to issue a refund for a service that was never provided. I reached out by phone--no answer. I followed up by email, and the reply I did receive was rude and dismissive. I made multiple attempts to have a respectful conversation about the situation, but was met with a complete lack of professionalism. In what world is it acceptable for a business to keep payment for something they refuse to deliver? At the very least, clear communication and a refund should be the standard. Ugh, this is not a fun review to write. I was given this ride as my xmas present, because I love horses. At least I thought I did, until this place. My husband had purchased a ride, but ended up having a surgery and couldn't go. So that left me having to set up two separate rides, leaving me with two legit review experiences. First ride, this occurred on a Friday, the 11:30 a.m. ride. Checking in was a little chaotic. They had us wait outside the fence, then let us in, took our names down. Gave us helmets, did a quick tutorial. Then loaded us up and we're off. The wranglers were on edge that day. My horse didn't like one of the guys who kept yelling, and this caused my horse to buck multiple times. I had taken lessons at Chaparral Ranch, and never had this occur. Thank goodness for my lessons, because it helped me not get thrown off. A guy on a Segway was taking our photos, I knew that I wasn't going to buy them, because I was alone and wasn't having a good time. It was a nuisance to force a smile. I felt bad from him trying to make me smile. LOL. Now the scary part. There is a hill you need to ride down in order to access the beach. The horses were all on edge because of the wranglers. Mine started bucking again once on the beach. Then going back up, I saw a girl starting to slide off, because her saddle wasn't secured enough. The guys started yelling and jumped off to fix it. I couldn't have been happier to see the ranch as we rode back. Then they had us jump off, not using the steps. I had never done this before and caught my foot in the stirrup. Other people did this too. Second ride, I was very nervous. Not looking forward to this ride. Went on a Monday at 9 a.m. Less people, different staff. It was a different vibe. Everyone was nicer? My ride was good. My only complaint was the strap that holds the stirrup, bruised my legs, they didn't give me enough time to adjust. This place they move fast. So I left with two extremely different experiences. I want to say if you go during the peak weekend days, the staff just aren't having it. Sadly this isn't a place I'd ever want to go back to. We had no riding experience and we had a blast-- would do it again! Beautiful scenery and views, just like a rom-com scene. I bought a Groupon and was able to book the 1.5 hour trail and beach ride fairly easily online (no lie, my struggles were user error, haha). The day before the ride, I received an email clearly stating what to wear and what to bring (basically, leave everything in the car, including your phone and purse). Check-in at the ranch was easy. We signed waivers, got our helmets, and a quick demonstration of how to mount the horse and put your feet in the stirrups, how to steer, and how to stop. Personally, I would've liked a bit more instruction, maybe a video to watch (attached as a YouTube link in the email would've been great), that showed ideal posture, how to get your horse to start moving after stopping, how to maintain balance at a trot, etc. That said, we had no trouble on the horses. They know the trails and other than stopping to munch weeds here and there, they were easy to handle. There's a photographer that follows you on a Segway taking pics, and he takes a LOT of them. They're available for purchase on a flash drive, and we found the prices reasonable: $45 for 5 pics or $75 (I think?) for all the pics. Our guides were great! There was a guy leading us, and another guy that brought up the rear and rode alongside keeping an eye on us. I don't remember their names, but they were friendly and professional and took their jobs seriously to ensure everyone was safe and comfortable at all times. Three stars because the actual ride was great, but the service was not good. The trail and beach was beautiful. The guides were great. It was hard to hear the guides yelling behind us. The guide in front didn't give much guidance about where to go, but we followed him. The folk who help you get up on horses are helpful and make sure you stay with your group. The older lady who checked us in was very rude and completely stressed us out before we even got on a horse. She asked me if " my hair would push down" under the helmet. I told her yes, it's hair. Very insulting. She tried to give me a helmet that was too big, I refused it. We drove all the way from Oakland, through tons of traffic and arrive about 10 minutes late. Her attitude was a bit excessive and is the reason we won't return. We will spend our $400 somewhere else next time. We couldn't take our own pictures. They provide a photographer, who takes good pictures, then charges either $45 or $75 for pictures. There are no other options. I have never been riding and not been able to take my own photos. This was not clearly outlined. They just said no cell phones. I'm not mad, but it's definitely a hustle. I do have to mention that it's a good idea to eject the flash drives, instead of just telling people to pull them out of the drive. The photographer was a little lax about this. No clean bathrooms. Only port a potties outside. Eww. Good food places near the water for after. We went to harbor pizza. The food was great. It's a small pizza place that also serves hamburgers and pasta. We enjoyed our ride, but I've never had anyone treat me that way at a stable or any other business. No thank you. But, glad we had the experience. read more

It really could not be a more terrible place. They are so terrible that even despite prepaying for the ride, they still want you to provide ID and credit card, because they know they provide such a crummy service that our cc company immediately authorized a back charge. I would give no stars if possible. read more

What a magical wonderful day it was riding with Sea Horse Ranch, it was a great experience from beginning to end. We chose the 90 minute package to the beach. We met our host who provided a demo and training (be sure to read the email they send you after booking the ride as it instructs riders to be there 30 minutes for a demo and training prior to the booked time). There were 2 guides for our group, one in front leading the way and one in back making sure we/horses didn't go astray. Our group had little to no experience riding. They led us from the property, through the ranch/fields, down to the beach and back. The horses were gentle, the guides were very helpful and friendly, and the scenery really just couldn't be beat. Not sure how this place is still in business... The older woman that runs the show there was terribly rude to me on the phone. When we got there my guy was very nice to her and said good morning she scoffed at him because it was not morning anymore. She was so incredibly awful we decided not to ride and asked for a refund. Seems like that's the typical thing that happens here based on all the other reviews I've now read. Get ready to be mistreated in a very unprofessional manner if you choose this company. I'm an a disabled Navy Veteran and because of Service Connected issues and PTS I was unable to attend today's event. And one of the women that used her credit card to book was charged!! I there in turn PAID the 140 to her they WOULDN'T refund!!! If you served your country or have family members that have....avoid them like an enemy!! read more
