And after the long drive I was grateful to find decent porta-potties in the Poplar Beach parking lot! The way down to the beach was quite steep, so I decided to stroll along the elevated Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail instead. I found some of the most majestic views I've seen in Nor-Cal. This is a great place to wander and remember to breathe. After a few hours here, I was sure that whatever troubles I had could never outspan the ocean.

My friend is very brave. The horses she rides are tall and usually trained by a professional. I fell off the horse once, and now rarely dare to ride again. This place is a solid first class farm specializing in German horses. They provide many services such as breeding, boarding, and training jumping and dressage horses. Head trainer, Daniel Zilla is amazing with young horses and student riders. I'm amazed at how this 72 acre farm is so well organized and clean. How much do you like horses? All her lessons build upon each other and focus on important skills like balance, general groundwork, reining, communication, having a good seat, and of course riding at various gaits. Denise teaches practical skills of how to be around horses and know what to do in different situations. She also focuses on safety first for both the horse and rider at all times. I also love how comprehensive her lessons are. She teaches how to groom and tack up a horse along with riding, which only makes the experience feel more realistic and complete. There are several small trails for general exercise around the property. You can keep your horse in a box stall with turnout, in a solo paddock with cover, or full time paddock. Ciara West feeds real deal hay three times a day. There are three bathrooms one in the upper and two in the lower barn. The weather at along skyline is typically not so hot as down in the valley. The view at sunset of the ocean is spectacular. Finally, there are trainers available across multiple disciplines. And the community of equestrians is welcome and friendly.

Creek Squad…read more +2,900-acre preserve managed by Mid-Pen that features over 34 miles of trails across a variety of terrains. The Good: * Free to visit. * Restroom in the main parking lot * Horses OK * Mountain biking OK on designated trails (check signage and maps) * Main parking lot as well as several roadside parking lots available off Skyline Blvd (aka Hwy 35). * Trails are in pretty good shape for the most part, and they're mostly shaded from what we can tell. There are several loops of varying difficulties, so check AllTrails for suggestions. * Several points of interest to check out, including the Tafoni skulls and the Methuselah Tree. * Some of the largest banana slugs we've ever seen! The Meh: * Roadside parking fills up quickly on weekends. Lots of cars waiting when we left around 11:30-ish. * No dogs * No camping The Ugly: * Beware of the mountain bikers who come ripping through the trails like they own them. You'll usually hear them before you see them, so keep the music down. * Driving here is no picnic on very windy roads, so please take your time and slow down, especially on weekends where you'll see hordes of bicyclists on the Hwy. Conclusion: Fantastic park with some great trails, beautiful forests, and huge banana slugs!
