My therapist referred me to Sean years ago for my son, who was then 13; she told me that Sean would become "huge in NYC." And he has, and deserves to be. His groups for adolescents were very helpful for my son. I joined, at Sean's urging, a group for single parents, also. I had a really good relationship with Sean; he encouraged me in a planned career change and made me feel backed up. I recommend him to anyone who is considering a change in their life; Sean is both supportive and open to ideas. Sorry to say my son's teen group was not a positive experience. Mr. Grover did not properly guide the group and help my son express himself and be understood (the point of joining the group). For my 200th review, Imma write about a lil' someone who not that many may have the balls to talk about...or for those others who haven't realized that they really, really need this person in their life. The Therapist. In this case, his name is Sean & he's one Bad Mutherfucker! It's not only a very daunting experience to have to search for new doctors when you move to a new city, but to search for a particular doctor who can ultimately have a huge impact in your life is super fuckin' scary, to say the least. After doing, what I had considered, extensive research (without whole-heartedly consulting my close friends...hey, I'm entitled to keep a couple of 'skeletons' in my closet when it comes to them) I found a female therapist. I figured since we were of the same sex, perhaps she'd empathize more (not like that's a therapist's job anyways...you need objectiveness, damnit). Needless to say, we clashed...hardbody (it's imperative to know that I tend to get along more with males than with females...I dunno why I didn't go with my gut instinct from the jump...but hey, desperate times called for desperate measures). So I dropped old girl & found myself back to square one & feeling like I was *this* close to falling into an abyss. In comes Sean. I figured, well, I've done review research on therapists...I've checked everywhere but Yelp...fuck it with a bucket, it doesn't hurt. After reading a couple of reviews for several therapists, the few sentences that Francine W. had written about Sean were the push enough to set-up an appointment. Best. Decision. Ever. Sean is a no-bullshit kind of dude, who in turn will call you out on your bullshit. He tells you what you need to hear, whether you like it or not. The great part- he's not imprudent nor rude when it comes to dishing out the truth (you feel like he's *actually* listening to you, not just hearing you out...there's a difference). His quirky sense of humor makes you feel at ease & whether you like it or not, you truly end up feeling comfortable around him, to the point that you find no need to hold things back or lie about something. You'll never find him giving you or feeding you the answer, he's just there to facilitate that path to that door that you can't seem to see at the moment. I've made a lot of progress with my inner demons & I have homies that can vouch for the change they've seen within me. Whether it's Sean or another therapist of your choice, sometimes you need that objective perspective to let you know: "hey, you're not as crazy as you think you are"...although we both know you really are. Grover was recommended to me (us) while we were going through what turned into a divorce Probably nothing could have saved our marriage but Grover certainly empowered my X by "working on me first" and giving her the impression that she was correct in pretty much all her assumptions and deeds I found this out from the person that recommended Grover Gee, I thought pretty much everything in a marriage was a two way street? When I told the person that recommended Grover how things went he said he would "never recommend Grover again" Grovers expert marriage counseling got me to the point of being completely frustrated, while he sat there smiling smugly After a few meetings with Grover he asked if he could meet our daughter "just to get her take" The smiling Grover then proceeded to get her to see him as a patient I believe this was a conflict to begin with My daughter's mental health slipped quickly while under Grovers care She completely stopped doing her homework and missed so much school that she needed to be home schooled just to graduate Daughter stopped speaking with me, which baffled me at the time, although it became perfectly clear what was happening when she called me up crying, begging that I don't have the court take her away This because she misinterpreted (or was lied to) a motion I put forth for a legal guardian for her ( A lawyer hired to watch out for her rights) Her mother was filling my daughter with poison and leaving court papers out for daughter to see X also had daughter lie for her and become her messenger She rightfully observed that the court really would not do anything concrete to stop her actions although the judge did shake her finger at X more then once My attorney stated that X was a "pathological liar" and Grover bought right into her BS Great insight into the patients mind, yes? While my daughter was failing in school due to her always being "sick" and habitually not doing her homework, Grover "hired" her to be his "secretary" to do paper work for him, keeping her from doing her homework by keeping her busy doing his bidding. Gratis of course! When she first stopped speaking to me, Grover said to me "give me two weeks. I'll have you back together" I'm still waiting years later! Grover's stock standard line (he used it several times) is "I USUALLY am against - - - - - - (fill in the blanks) BUT in this case" This line was used for everything from me and my X's divorce to putting my daughter on psychoactive drugs. Although I had joint custody of my daughter, The MD that Grover sent her too wasn't aware of it and wouldn't speak to me I had to have my attorney intervene before that MD would tell me what was going on At that time the MD told me that "he was at a disadvantage because he usually saw the patient as their therapist and that he could only go by Grover's reports" when prescribing drugs like Prozac and Xanax to a heathy (before Grover got his claws into her) 13 years old. Once Grover threatened me with "Screwing me with the court" because I was trying to find out what was going on with her being given drugs by that Dr When I got up and confronted him (Are you threatening me?) he coward in his chair Huge coward that Mr Grover! I walked out and never saw him again Daughter's pediatrician stated that Grover was "completely ineffectual", but X said "but she likes him" so when I fired Grover, X kept sending my daughter to him The court ordered X to pay for daughters treatment by Grover if she wanted to continue seeing him When I called Grover to speak to him about my daughter he said "make an appointment" Now, after 9 years and her quitting school YET AGAIN, I'm still wondering what good Grover did And what harm did he do? I do believe in payback And Grover's will be quite the thing to witness. read more

That's how I think about my time with Sean and the group I worked with weekly. He is an amazing and caring individual that will give you the guidance and support to help you truly reflect and grow. He uses tools like group interaction and support as well as personal counseling to help you along the way. Met Sean years ago at a school workshop. He is insightful, funny, enthusiastic, personable, and knowledgeable. I went to a few of his school workshops and always walked out knowing more about the topics he discussed and felt energized. He breaks down the issues and makes them easier to understand and deal with. We moved onto a new school and I recommended him as one of the Parent Association meeting speakers. We have brought him in a few times and our parents responded extremely well to his workshops. His fees are very reasonable and he works with our budget. Upon moving to New York City, quite a bit of unresolved anxiety began rearing its head in my life. I love Sean Grover. I did individual and group therapy with him for years. From our first session, I knew that he was really special because he exuded an inner radiance that only really, genuinely happy people can exude. I trusted his guidance, and I wanted what he had. In individual therapy, I felt like I could tell him anything. All I can say is that in one visit he managed to make it so my teenagers refused to ever go to therapy again - he said something in front of both of my teens that should have been said to me in private. I also found that he empowered my kids in front of me that made the parent-bullying much worse than it was before we went to see him. This after having gone to several workshops where I really liked what he had to say. Perhaps one on one with a teen but I wouldn't recommend for family therapy. I have seen Sean on and off for the past ten years of my life and he has always been a great catalyst for growth in my life. I participated in Sean's group work for many years and his support has been crucial in my development as a person and now, as an emerging social worker myself, as a professional. I find him to be attentive, approachable, insightful, and very highly knowledgable and experienced. I also think he is very flexible and works with different people in different ways, and differently with one person depending on the moment, with a range of seriousness and humor, hard edge and soft warmth. I find him to be very professional while retaining a sense of humanity and without being robotic or dogmatic. I don't give 5 stars because: a) I started working with Sean as a young person and have not worked with other group psychotherapists; and b) I am extremely conservative with superlatives; I don't say something is "the best" just because it was good for me. That said, I have experience in and have studied group work in a wide range of contexts, from education to the performing arts to community organizing, and the skills that he models and teaches in his groups are among my gold standards for healthy and productive relationships. Sometimes that means making choices that can be hard on myself or even potentially on others, but I have learned to be principled and courageous in doing so with Sean which has been of tremendous benefit in my life. I can confidently say that working with Sean completely altered the course of my life. After about a year of living in NYC, I was having issues with panic attacks-- no fun at all. Sean Grover the amazing. The most straight-forward, no bullshit, confident-but-not-overbearing-or-intimidating, kind, sensitive & thoughtful son of a bitch you're going to find. Just right off the bat (the first time I heard his voice even), I just liked the guy. He won't sit there and tell you you're right, everything is OK, etc., like another therapist might. His straight honesty is extremely refreshing, and at no time do you ever feel judged or criticized. I feel as though I could tell him anything (and I have) - I feel completely safe with him. When I first met Sean I'd had a few therapists over the years, none of them were very good I realize now. Sean suggested pretty much right off the bat that I try group therapy with him - "It's like therapy in the express lane." TRUTH BE KNOWN. I did the group for about 6 months, and every Tuesday night I felt as thought I had completely discharged all my anxiety. Some groups I held myself back and didn't quite get the same release, but most of the time I would feel completely free of anxiety afterwards - no self-consciousness, no editing what I'm thinking - just absolutely felt like the most ME that I am, without any of the crap that can get in the way. I actually moved to California about 3 years ago, and I would say that as much as I am a child of NYC, love every inch of it to death and loved living there, the BIGGEST REASON I did not want to leave was because that group was everything to me. Being able to discharge all that emotion was so powerful, group became a huge part of my life, and I felt like I was only getting started. I still live out in California and talk to Sean on the phone on a regular basis. If he reads this he is going to kill me for saying that, because the bastard hates phone sessions. But I am his favorite patient in the universe so I was able to convince him. Actually nevermind - yes, ask him if you can do phone sessions with him. He loves phone sessions. Some people are embarrassed to talk about therapy, let alone GROUP therapy (btw Sean does individual and group, of course) - but I quickly broke away from that and feel very comfortable talking about Sean and therapy, and the fact that I've done group therapy, and what it's done for me. In fact, I would get so excited about talking group therapy with my friends and family, that in the last year I've had two very close people in my life join two different groups of Sean's. I raved to them about it at some point, and then down the line they came to ME about it because they saw how much I had grown. But then in addition, 2 of my other friends have gone in for consultations with Sean and want to do groups, but either the timing didn't work out (for friend A's schedule) or haven't started yet (friend B). Individual sessions with Sean are great too. It depends on what you're looking for. In a group with Sean, you sit around and just have the relationships with the people in the room - you tell them how you feel and you don't attack. And you don't sleep with them outside of group. Or in group. You know what I mean. I think those are pretty much the rules. So it isn't how you might typically think of a group, where people sit in a circle (although you do sit in a circle, actually) and one by one talk about your childhood and hold hands and cry together - oh no no no no no. You sit in the room and you have the relationships - and trust me, all your issues come out when you express how you're actually feeling (which can be extremely difficult), and it can bring a tremendous release and growth. In individual sessions, it's much harder, at least in my experience, to get the same kind of emotional release you can get in a group, but you have more space to explore the more brainy aspects of yourself - like why you behave a certain way around X person, or talk about a dream you had, or the relationship with your girlfriend. So again, it depends on what you're looking for. It will be a dialog though - not just you talking into space. Sean won't interrupt you if you're running along a thought, but he isn't just going to sit there like a lot of other therapists will. He is incredibly insightful, and many times will give examples from other people he's worked with, which can be helpful, or make connections you may not have made. And like I said, he won't pander to you, and he won't judge you, and he won't criticize you. He will most definitely be straight with you - but somehow he does it in a way that you just feel refreshed afterwards. When I was living in NY, I did both group and individual - group every week, and an individual session once a month or so. If you can afford it, doing individual weekly and group weekly could be an amazing way to talk about what happened in your group session, talk about the relationships, etc, one on one. You can get even more out of group in that way. OK - out of characters here. Can't say enough...check him out! read more

After a recommendation from another one of his clients, my friend started seeing him. My friend is not easy to please nor is he open to new people but he loved Sean. For psychotherapists, good clinical supervision is a must. I work as a therapist in an acute inpatient psychiatric unit in one of our city hospitals. I met with Sean after I was physically assaulted, and injured, by one of my patients. My regular supervision and therapy were not helping me to overcome the ramifications of this crisis, but I found Sean's guidance extremely helpful. He is clear, compassionate, and has a great sense of humor. Sean's vast clinical knowledge and genuine warmth opened up a new world of nuanced awareness that continues to support and facilitate my work with a population of acutely psychotic individuals. Without good clinical supervision, many therapists working in my setting burn out, or are unable to return to work and be effective after suffering unprovoked attacks and being injured by patients. Thanks to Sean's advice, I feel I was able to transform this source of potential trauma into a springboard for growth as a person and therapist.
