Bear On The Lake Guest House - Coffee on the deck

Bear On The Lake Guest House

Bear on the lake is a charming guest house/hostel on Big Bras D'or Lake with all the basics (yes,…read morewifi!). Nancy showed us around the kitchen and common areas when we arrived. There is an outdoor patio with chairs, tables, and a grill, as well as a smaller deck on the upstairs level. Within a half hour of sitting outside in June, I saw goldfinches, a blue jay, and a hummingbird. There is a huge communal kitchen, full sized fridge, stove/oven, and bins you can label with your name to keep food in. Previous travelers had left perfectly good food so between that and our own groceries, we made quite a few meals here. We stayed in a private room (accessibility note: private rooms are up a flight of stairs). Our room had a double bed, two nightstands with lamps, a standing fan, a closet area with hangers, and a window. The upstairs common area and bathroom were shared with a couple staying in the other private room. Clean towels, hand soap, and a hairdryer were provided. The common area has couches, board games, and a big dining room table. One minor, minor quibble: our bed had 2 total pillows and we are both double pillow people. I probably could have asked but I was tired from our travels and didn't bother. Yes, you do have to wash your own dishes but if you're looking for a budget-friendly place that's also clean, this is it. I paid $207 CAD for two nights which is about $75 USD per night. An absolute steal for a great place to stay.

Pros The beach…read moreaccess is great, the property was clean and the front porch were all nice perks. The kitchen and grill are nice additions we did not need but, certainly add some value. The kids playground was cool for my littles to run around on after a long day in the car. The property is a ways off the road and stays pretty quiet. The AC was nice. Having Two rooms was also nice. Cons The beds were extremely uncomfortable. The sheets and blankets also cheap. Additionally we had a minor issue with our stay and because the office is generally unstaffed there was nobody we could contact to help fix a really simple problem. So we went the duration of our stay with an unresolved issue. The only reason I am really writing this review is that for the price we payed (about $650 for a single night) and the accommodations and lack of service do not meet my expectations for such a high dollar stay. My perceived value of this stay is somewhere around half the price we payed. Suggestions: Upgrade the bedding and mattresses. Have someone on call who can resolve minor issues with people's stay effectively either via phone or text. Our issue could have been cleared up in 30 seconds.

Beds were ok and the cabin was clean. So why the three stars? There is absolutely NO one to contact for emergencies or in the event something needs to be fixed. They have a number to call that no one ever answers or gets back to. We had a couple of issues that needed to be attended to and never were. Texted, left voicemail with NO response. When we booked this place about six months before our trip, they had someone answering the phone who started she ran the place. Not sure what happened. Unless they change this policy where they have no one to attend to issues, I would not stay here again nor recommend. All they had to do was pick up the phone or call us back.

We stayed in the Suite Room because it has it's own bathroom in the room. The room is at the front…read moreof the house, and was decorated in simple country tones with beautiful furniture. The bed was comfortable, and the room and bathroom were very clean. However, there were a few drawback to the room. With these things in mind, it felt that our room was just a bit overpriced: 1) You can hear traffic on the road. 2) There is common room lighting that illuminates through the door all night. I actually went to find the switch to turn off the lights, which was not easy, and I'm sure was not appreciated by the host and the people who needed that light. However, what could we do? It was so bright in our room. 3) You *must* keep the bathroom door closed and the bathroom window open, as the smell of sewage will seep in. We found out the hard way about half way through the night when the smell woke us up. Breakfast was one of the best we had on our trip. Also appreciated are the loose teas available for guests. The host was not there, but the place was being minded by a woman who was an introvert that I would not put in charge of a B&B during high season. Though she was nice when you asked for help with something, she could come off gruff to some and volunteered no info about the area. I really wish I had known that across the street was a beach - we had no clue, and missed out on this opportunity that we surely would have taken, had we known.

Highlights were: - clean, cozy and very large room (we stayed in the largest one with the ocean view) - the best breakfast of our entire vacation, consisting of home-made granola with fresh berries, tasty plunger coffee from vancouver (hard to find nice coffee locally), and INCREDIBLE eggs Benedict with salmon that they smoked on site! - wonderfully adorable couple who run the place (though I have forgotten their names now) made us feel at home, and were just damn good to talk to.. felt like I was hanging out a friend's place - a short stroll to a sandy/rocky beach Cannot recommend this place highly enough - we were nearly tempted to cancel our accommodation back in Halifax so we could stay another night!
