This place is great I've spent over a dozen nights here in the last few years. Both camping in tents and also renting some of the different camping cottages. I won't talk about the seafood here because it it already reviewed by others. All I will say is that it's great and fresh. The campground itself is great! Everything you'll need to have a great time camping. I would recommend this place over the highlands park camp grounds anytime in the peak season. The weekends at the national park are silly. Mostly teenagers drinking and playing rap music. Security is always a hassle there. Read my review on the NP campgrounds I'll be posting soon to find out more. Back to this gem. It's got a games room where families and friends can spend rainy evenings. Hot showers...they do cost $1 but you really can't complain about that. There are two types of camp sites, wooded and field. All include a fire pit unlike the NP's. Wood is sold at the office and is reasonable in price. The wooded sites are nice when the weather is "Cape Breton-ish". The open field sites provide a great view to enjoy anytime of day. You can see the ocean, the oyster lake, the mountains...its amazing.Although the wooded sites can have close neighbors I've never had a problem finding one a little more secluded to enjoy privacy. the campsites are also priced lower then that of the NP's. Although I can't remember at the moment. The campground also offers camping cottages which are spaced out over the grounds. A few are tucked away in the woods for privacy while most offer views out to the ocean. There is even one that is a mini light house aka love shack. There is no power, heat, or running water. It is a camping cottage atfer all. Small solar lights are in each although id recommend bringing your own. Most of the cottages could house a family easy. There is a bunk bed and another bed also a small sleeping loft. All with plastic wrapped mattresses, you provide bedding aka sleeping bags. There are a few windows and a small table and chairs. Outside you have a nice little deck and some nice wooden chairs to laze in. There is a picnic table and fire pit for each cottage. These cottages are great in the tail end of the season when hurricanes blow thru. They are priced at $45 dollars a night per couple and $5 per extra person if I remember correct. The campground has a small general store where some snack items can be purchased. They also sell small camp related items you might have forgotten. There is a small system of trails on the property in case you wanna have a walk. Ranging from 1/2 km to 3-4 I think. One takes you down tho the oyster lake that is dotted with small islands great for a kayak. You can see the oysters as you paddle along. There is also cooking shelters spaced around the property. Out houses and a few flush toilets. There is also a playground for the kids. There is even free wifi near the office....bonus! Althought the campground doesn't have it's own ocean beach it is close to one of the most amazing beaches in cape Breton. It's at the end of the road that the camp ground is one. If you take the trip to the campground you'd be foolish not to take in this amazing secluded beach. The road to the beach can be a little scetchy depending of the weather during the last few days. If there has been lots a rain I'd advise walking the few Kim's instead of driving. You'll understand. Unless you have 4x4...have fun then. There is a small spot to park before you walk to the beach. Just follow the signs. The campground is also within 15-20 mins to Cabot's Landing beach. Where John Cabot first set foot in north America 100's of yrs ago. There is also a small beach at the end of dingwall rd where I've seen people surfing at times. My only complaint about this campground would be about the bugs.....they can get really bad depending on the weather and time of year. But if you're gonna let that scare you away then you shouldnt even be out side. I hope people find this review helpful. A great family owned campgrond. I'll try and find some pics of cottages and sites and beaches in area to post soon. There is also a spot to rent kayaks just up the road, althought not owned by the campground. They offer guided tours as well. It's a must.

Stayed in the lighthouse cabin for 4 nights as alternative to tent camping in the rain. Perfect location for a fairly secluded stay, picnic table under the tall tree, high harbor view, and convenient place for boiled lobster and fresh oysters. Lighthouse themed cabin is very romantic that conjured lots of possibilities. Dined on 2 dozen oysters and most are really fresh, sweet, and cool tasting, lobster is not in season, so the meat reflects that. Price on cabin is best we seen anywhere.

This a great campground and the oysters are fabulous ! My only complain is that there was no place for us with tents to wash dishes. That was a problem.

Everything was very clean and it was right at the foot of a great cliff. Highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a great place to stay ( also close to Sydney ) Make sure to contact the office before 8pm if you are doing things last minute as we were as that is when the office closes ! It's less than half an hour from the Newfoundland ferry terminal in North Sydney, so we weren't the only ones using it as a one night pit stop. The campground is easy to find. It's on the Trans Canada Highway, snug between a lake and the bottom of a cliff. Note: you need to drive along the cliff base on your way in. It is marked with "beware of falling rocks" signs. The campground is terraced on three levels. There are 3W and 2W sites, and unserviced sites. Our site was a pull through 3W. There was a row of them, about 50' x 30' each. As I said, we arrived late in the pouring rain, so we appreciated that they were waiting for us, and guided us to & into our site in their golf cart. The site (23) was level and had both 30amp & 50amp hookups. The wifi was non-existent at our site. The campground staff did warn us that the wifi was iffy at best. The campground overlooks the lake (nice!) and the highway (not so much). Unfortunately, you can hear every transport truck as it engine-brakes coming down from the bridge. It is noisy. It's okay for a night, but I wouldn't camp there if I could find something with less noise and/or larger sites.

My "memorable" experience at Riverside Retreat began with the long and very poorly maintained dirt…read moreroad with dozens of potholes of differing sizes and shapes, and because it had been raining, I couldn't gauge the depth of the potholes. Slowly, slowly, slipping and sliding I finally found the "campground". Very rough sites, not cleared, soil base, no way to set up a proper dry campsite in the rain. Basically mud. Finally got to the site that he had assigned me and I pulled in to regroup. Glad that I didn't have to go any further because there was a large puddle of questionable depth across the whole road just beyond my site (it had pumps in it, so owner is aware of the problem). As I was wondering about my bad luck, I noticed only two other campers in the campground; both had multiple tarps up and seemed to be there for the long term. The next moment a large white pick up truck blasted by, drove through the large puddle at a high rate of speed, spraying mud everywhere, stopped a little further down, turned around and came back out doing the same thing - the whole vibe just seems kind of sketchy to me. I immediately texted Shannon and told him that I was not going to be able to stay and I would appreciate a refund (we're talking about $35) and thus began probably the most negative experience with a business person I may have ever had in my life. I will spare you the details, but just leave you with a quote from the last email that he sent me: "Your negative review won't cause me one second of missed sleep, and I look forward to replying to it. Your $35 means nothing, it's the negative, self-entitled attitude I have no intention on trying to work with. We don't have time to deal with every person that expects the world to revolve around them." I can assure you that I do not think the world revolves around me. I am an experienced solo camper and had just finished 2 1/2 weeks in the New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia area. I had dealt with lots of rain on this trip but I have never had such a negative feeling as when I pulled into this place. I suppose my first impression was a warning as to what I was going to be up against with this owner. Just look at his reviews; if you praise his campground, you're his best buddy. If you have anything negative say, observe his replies. I'm sure that he will slam me as well. The only thing I would warn you about, is don't say anything bad to his face; I would hate to see what comes of that...

A few things I would want to know. We showed up on a rainy day and ended up canceling our booking…read moreas the campground was not what we expected. A few things to note. The main issue for us was the website did not indicate that the campsites were walk in...which we note now the change has been made. The other issue was the map of the campground identifies solid lines to campsite which usually indicates drivable road but should be a dotted line to indicate walking path. When we asked to cancel and be refunded based on this we only received 50% back which was disappointing. Also it should be noted that the campground has no cell service or internet away from the small office building. Pictures show the road in which is washed out in places and would be comparable to a logging road. We were also told that the river was too high to be accessible. Due to rains we were not wishing to walk in to a site so we left to another campground. Host seemed very friendly but due to misinformation on the website we feel a full refund would have been appreciated.

Come prepared though. Awd and snow tires are a must. Satellite communication devices or starlink is also recommended as we had very large swaths of the drive without cell service. And if your car breaks down or you get stuck in a snow drift you are screwed. I think there was a part of the drive where I went easily 90 minutes without passing by anyone. I also wouldn't really recommend coming up here with an electric vehicle during the winter. But we enjoyed our time here.
