The rental started out fine - a young woman helped me figure out the boat size, get me checked in, and familiar with the route and map. Then she disappeared, and someone changed the boat she ordered (which we carefully figured out was right for me) to a different longer boat. I'm not sure why. It was a cloudy day and there were about 75 available green plastic boats. She had mentioned there was a new boat, even shorter than the 14' one she put me in, but somehow it was too hard to get to (according to the rude gentleman who took over for her. He was saying snarky things to me, like would I mind if the boat they gave me was 5" longer than the one they promised???? It made not sense. I was solo kayaking in the afternoon. The young man who put me in the boat told me before he pushed me off that he would be going over some safety points. That consisted of one tip - always keep your lifejacket on. Speaking of safety - I have about 12 years of experience kayaking and having a whistle is pretty important. They had to search several PFD's to find one with a whistle. I had to ask for that. I was kayaking SOLO! Should have been a given. They have a set way of putting people in boats which starts with sitting on the metal grated dock. I am in my 6th decade of life, and getting down to sitting on the ground like that isn't a slam dunk. Plus I had a scraped knee (us oldsters have falls). The guy wasn't reading the room. When I asked him to adjust the foot pedals, he snapped back that he was going to do that next. Anyway, they recommended I make my way across the wide channel to the other side where the houseboats were, but I felt wobbly right there at the dock and thought better of that and instead hugged the side of the channel we were already on. There was no instruction as to what to do if the boat tipped over. Not that they could have given me a whole wet exit lesson - I already knew what to do, but I certainly didn't want to capsize and with all the motor boat activity that afternoon, I knew the paddle would be a bit nerve wracking. On the way out (after just 30 minutes, having returned to the dock to get out of the water) I told the young woman at the check out that they need to add an "in case of emergency" phone number to the waiver. Her response was silly "we are the emergency phone number". Yes, well if I were to capsize and perhaps drown, you might need to reach someone ON MY END. Duh. Rude man had some parting remarks I wasn't interested in. Because of his snarkiness alone, I'll never be back and am telling others. I think he is in the wrong business.

They did a wonderful job enforcing that masks be worn at the check in/check out, and they took the time to make sure each paddle, life jacket, board was sanitized before the next person used it! They also always do a great job letting you know how the wind is blowing at the time, and which direction you should head towards so that the winds don't push you too far away before you have to paddle all the way back to the marina. Lastly, they always have groupon deals during the summer, making them a VERY affordable company to paddle board with!

They do a variety of rentals I believe (kayaks as well?) but they do single person paddle boards as well as a big giant one that can fit like a whole family on them!

Once we were on the water, the real-time individualized feedback was superbly useful - it let me know what to keep doing, and what I should change to paddle more efficiently. I had a lot of fun learning with Rob/team and the other students, and I was even approached by a curious seal! One thing I wanted to highlight is Rob & team's emphasis on safety. I so appreciated how seriously they take SUP safety. I felt very safe in their care, and after this class I feel confident about venturing out onto the Sound, with a SUP buddy or two, to practice what I learned in class. I came with just two other guys and there were groups of all sizes to parties that had enough people for a full raft to both guys and girls who came on their own and joined in on a raft like ours who didn't have a party that would fill a full raft. I went rafting before but it must have been in the middle of the day because at that time I was hot in my gear, this time I was super cold. The trip was a blast. The guides are awesome. One raft lost people to the drops but we helped rescue everyone. I think it's totally worth your time and money. Save up for the experience, it certainly is worth it. If you are going to do only 1 or so trips, do the class 5.

Plan accordingly. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ Outdoor adventures keeps the guided groups small (maximum 12 people). I appreciate the small groups since this was my first time kayaking. Three types of kayaks are available: single, double or triple occupancy. Discover is an accepted form of payment. A Discover Pass is required to park at Spencer Spit. If you do not have a pass, a $10 day pass can be purchased with cash or check. There were several rangers checking passes on our visit so be sure to have a pass visibly displayed to avoid being ticketed. WHAT TO BRING - Signed Release of Liability - Bathing suit or non-cotton under layers preferred - A synthetic shirt (capilene, polypro, Under Armor, etc) - Shorts or pants made of a synthetic material (may get wet/damp) - Lightweight fleece jacket or windbreaker/rain jacket to provide warmth - Water shoes or sandals that strap on (or shoes that can get wet) - Sun hat and/or sunglasses - Sunscreen and chapstick - Water bottle - Optional; Camera, Plastic bag for wet items and change of clothing - If you have a gift certificate or prepaid voucher (such as Groupon) please bring a printed copy with you! Be sure to use the restroom before departing. Once on the water, there is no turning back. Kayaking is great for teamwork and communication. Both are required to avoid frustration. I recommend wearing weight-lifting/bicycle gloves in order to prevent blisters. Each person in our group started getting blisters towards the end of the tour. During our 3 mile kayaking trip, we spotted starfish, seals and majestic bald eagles. Thank you Outdoor Adventures for providing a magnificent day of play while surrounded by gorgeous Mother Nature.
