Go online and get an appointment BEFORE you drive over. I arrived at 2pm and over heard a staffer tell security, "No more walk-in's. Period. We are short handed." Once you set up an appointment and get in the system the lines randomly move so you have no idea who will be next. Employees are knowledgeable and courteous but I wouldn't call this friendly.

Is it a pain to track an appointment down, it can be. I was able to get an appointment a week in advance. However, I checked day of and there were cancelations, so was able to reschedule. This location has slightly moved in the plaza since I last visited. The new location is modernized and clean. Staff confirm you have an appointment prior to getting in line. Then staff review your documents before assigning you to a queue. They processed my information quickly and I was in and out in about 30 minutes. It was only that long because of their system. I received a paper temporary id and the mailed ID in 9 business days.

The gentleman at the door let me go in early, got my number, had my photo taken by a sweet older man, whose wife was also named Joanna. He told me to smile for the photo. Then my number was called before I barely left that area, took the eye exam, answered a few questions, signed paperwork and was out the door 13 minutes later. When I arrived, there were a group of 6-8 employees outside chatting. For all I knew, they were on a break or something. So, I walked inside and one of them flagged me down and asked if I had been checked in already. Checked in? By who? Apparently, one of the outside employees does your initial check in, but based on how they were gathered outside, you wouldn't have known at all. You need to have your confirmation email or text and then they allow you inside. My second stop was at the front desk. A woman (whose name I don't know, but she had bright turquoise hair) was very friendly and kept the process going smoothly. Next, I had to get a photo taken and then wait for my number to be called. The staff at the photo area are really friendly! I can't say the staff at the numbered stations are particularly nice, at least not the one I dealt with. When I was taking the vision test, the entire left side of the vision test display was blurry. Likely a broken machine, because they look older than dirt. The woman at the counter kept yelling at me about being "slapped with more restrictions". I ended up using the machine at the adjacent station and it worked perfectly. Equipment does break and it does fail. Please check your equipment before hocking your snotty attitude at people. Luckily, this is something I have to do once every 4 years. I would not recommend this location at all.

Originally this was a very lousy facility a lot of employees had a lot of attitudes and a whole lot more unfortunately. This like many other locations in Illinois is strictly CDL related which means truck and bus and road testing commercial vehicles only. If you have a regular car license you cannot renew here you must go to another Secretary of State facility in Illinois or do it online. Everything worked out really good I came in there paid my $60 got a picture taken eye test didn't have to do any road test or anything but the interesting thing now is they will mail you your license you get a temporary paper license with all the information and what it will look like it's just not in color and hard plastic. The people who I saw on my visit we're just absolutely professional cordial laughing and joking couldn't ask for a better experience it definitely has come full circle and made a 360 as far as I'm concerned in service here at elk Grove village facility.

If you have resided in other states as I have be prepared for perhaps some hiccups. I lost my license and needed to obtain a replacement. Even though I've been a resident for over 10years now, I needed to contact my home state and Springfield to be able to obtain a license. In working with the supervisors finally I was able to get it all squared away but I was sent away twice in one day over nothing but a system error. When all that needed to happen was a very nice supervisor (guy) needed to do was call Springfield to clear-up the systems error. Fixed in 2 minutes. I do not know anyone that loves the DMV but I will say I like the fact that it is a predominantly black facility with ample parking and even though it took me 3 tries over the course of 5 hours to get a license. I would still probably go back just much better prepared. I haven't had a need for this service since 2013.
