Yellow Rice & Peas w/Avocado, Tostones, Yuca Frita, & Red Beans
    Leslie H.

I love this place. This time I got the veggie plate with yellow rice and peas, avocado, red beans, yuca fries, and tostones. The entree was enough for 2, easily. I recommend takeout as their dining area isn't very cozy and you will leave smelling like their kitchen. The food is worth it, though!

Secretos De Mis Abuelos (SDMA) was absolutely fire. I am not gonna lie, this is an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant and it is so good. They have all the familiar Puerto Rican entrées packed with flavor and honestly the food just warms your soul. From the moment you walk in, it feels cultural and very much like a family owned spot. You really get a little taste of Puerto Rico when you come here. When you walk in, you can see the menu displayed up top and then place your order on a tablet. After that, you wait for your number while they cook everything fresh in the back. The whole process is simple and the experience is great. This was my second time coming here and I loved it just as much as the first. I really hope this place continues to get recognized. Everyone should come try this spot.

Secretos is so delicious! I've only ever had the birria tacos, empanadas, tostones, and plantains, but the quality is consistently excellent. I love pairing dinner at Secretos with a drink from Co-Sign Speakeasy (they're in the same building, The Bank on 8th). PSA the birria is SPICY. I love spice, but it is almost too much sometimes, my nose runs and my eyes tear up lol. But I still order it, because it is still a great dish! I can't wait to try more of the menu!

We absolutely loved this place. It's a true Puerto Rican mom-and-pop spot with such a warm, welcoming vibe. The owners were so kind and we genuinely enjoyed talking with them -- it felt more like being welcomed into someone's kitchen than just ordering food. The ambience is cozy and full of heart, and the food was amazing. The plantains were perfectly cooked, the bistek was tender and full of flavor, and the empanadas were delicious and clearly made with care. You can tell everything here is made with love. We'll definitely be back. If there's no tables in the front ask to eat in the back!

I had been meaning to hit up this place for some time so I was delighted when I finally had the opportunity. I've never had tres leches cake before and this was delicious! It reminds me of tiramisu on some level but they are totally different. It goes very well with coffee as I found out when I got home. The chicken pastelillo was yummy and well seasoned. I could tell that it was homemade. Now for the churrasco y cebolla it was overcooked, dry and tough. They serve a large portion but that meant that I had to eat more of a bad dish. This was a huge disappointment and I will not be giving this dish another chance. The yucca frita was good as was the maduros. The garlic "sauce" is a bunch of oil with some garlic at the bottom and probably a bit of vinegar. This is not the garlic sauce associated with some other Hispanic cuisines; I didn't like it. One thing to note is that a whole avocado is listed as a side for $4.50!! What?? Either get an avocado as a side that comes with your meal or get one from the store and enjoy it at home. All this being said, I will come back to try the Burria tacos. Hopefully that will fare much better than the churrasco y cebolla.

This is a small shop, there is some seating inside but you can also use the axe throwing area/bar to eat. The staff are very kind. The food is a lot more greasy than I thought it would be. But I really liked the plantains and the yuca fries. The small platter I thought was Extremly small for $8, we got the chicken stew small plate, but I think it's a good size for a child.

Ok this is a truly hidden gem. I wasn't really sure what to get so I tried the most popular meat and basically all the sides. There were a few tables inside you could eat at but we took ours to-go. The staff was super nice and helpful. Everything was so fresh and delicious I can't wait to go back!

I've heard so many good things about Secretos so we tried them out on Friday night and I can't believe people aren't talking about this spot more?? Located in The Bank on 8th in Homestead, Secretos is truly a hidden gem (multiple friends called me saying they didn't know where to find it Friday night haha) with incredible food. You order at the iPad and they call your name when your food is ready and you can eat it in the general area with tables where the axe throwing is. The portions were massive and very reasonably priced. I'm obsessed with the birria tacos, the rellenos de papa, and the crispy tostones!! I regretted not having room for dessert but that just means we'll have to come back. It is a little confusing when you first walk in because no one gives you directions on what to do but I figured it out. Also, all their stuff is in styrofoam takeout containers and the place where you eat isn't pretty or well lit but this is a spot where you go for the food, not the ambiance or presentation. What we got: Pernil entree - signature slow roasted pork with three sides - we chose yuca frita, maduros, and tostones Rellenos de papa - battered and fried potato ball with your choice of filling, we chose chicken Pastelillo - fried turnover with your choice of filling, we chose beef Birria queso taco - spicy beef birria tacos quesadilla style, served with onions, cilantro, lime, and consommé Tostones locos - plantain nachos, choice of protein, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, cilantro, mayokechu, and lime Flava bowl (mini version of their main dishes) - carne frita edition

Nothing not to love about this restaurant. Almost right across the tracks from the Waterfront on Eighth Avenue, this Homestead gem offers delicious Puerto Rican cuisine in generous portions. The seating area (if you dine in) shares a space with an axe-throwing club (they weren't there this visit). I got yucca fries which were nice and crispy and not greasy. The Pollo guisado was a great chicken stew with rich spices and heat to it. The rice and beans also had great seasonings and flavor too. And you can see from my pic, you get quite a bit. The women at the counter were super nice too. This restaurant is great and encourage anyone in the area to go check it out.

Walk up counter and you order electronically. Next door is a bar and you can sit at a table and eat. I needed more sauce description. Great descriptions on the board otherwise. I got the Flava bowl lol Mofongo and churrasca y cebolla had good flavor.

A hidden gem in Homestead! Saw some folks I follow on socials visit and then was invited by the owner to stop by! First of all, the owner (I didn't get his name) was so kind and walked us through the menu. Amazing service! The food is incredible. Amazing flavors and you can taste the authenticity and care put into the food. Our faves were the Pernil, yellow and rice and peas, and yuca frita! We took the desserts to go and they were also amazing. Great value, amazing portions for the price. Seating is open within the building where there is ace throwing and some other things so you could make a nice night of it! Secretos is a must!! We will be return customers again and again, I'm sure!

Went yesterday afternoon to grab a bite to eat. I ordered churrasco y cebolla (chimichurri steak and onions), it came with 3 sides. I chose red beans (not pictured), yuca fritos and maduro. Didn't take long for me to get it which was nice. I was able to sit in ace axe throwing to eat and got a beer from them. It was all so flavorful and I tried a couple things I've never had before.

I'm glad they are able to open in what will hopefully be a great location. This Illy Philly went to their grand opening at the Wanterfront where they share a space with Ace Axe Throwing, and I was not disappointed by the food. I ordered tostones, white rice and beans with the garlic sauce side and the mayoketcho side, and everything was delicious as usual. I hope they do well and they are able to bring back the rest of their menu. On another note....if someone buys a round of drinks....thank them for it. It's called manners, and as a fellow boricua, I was very disappointed in the lack of manners when I bought a 'round of drinks for the staff'.

The menu lists appetizers (e.g., tequenos, tostones, yucca, and tortilla chips with dips), Venezuelan arepas (gluten-free cornmeal cakes filled with meats, cheese, or vegetables), Venezuelan empanadas (gluten-free cornmeal filled with meats, cheese, black beans, or plantains), Venezuelan mains (gluten-free criollo, cachapa, and patacones), Mexican tacos, Mexican burritos, Mexican enchiladas, non-alcoholic beverages, desserts (e.g., flan and churros), and more. Venezuelan cuisine is a blend of indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, and most of it is naturally gluten-free. In addition, several vegetarian options are available, and some menu items can be customized to be vegan. Since 2021, my husband and I have eaten here off and on, and all of our meals have been excellent. The employees promptly and courteously serve us. Here are my ratings for the menu items that we ate: Tortilla chips with queso and guacamole - 4.5 stars - The tortilla chips had a good flavor. The queso tasted extremely cheesy. The guacamole was very freshly made. Beef empanada - 4.5 stars - The fried-dough exterior was perfectly crispy, and the beef filling was savory. I particularly enjoyed the green sauce on the side. Seafood empanada - 3.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry was filled with tilapia, shrimp, and vegetables. It was a large size, and the flavors were alright. Pabellon empanada - 4.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry contained black beans, white cheese, shredded beef, and sweet plantains. My husband ate it and said that he really liked it. Llanera chicken arepa - 5 stars - This arepa is my husband's favorite go-to. It was a very large size, and it was stuffed with much chicken, lettuce, tomato (although my husband does not like tomato), cheese, and guacamole. My husband commented that the combination of flavors was delicious. On the side was guasacaca, a tangy Venezuelan sauce that is made from avocados, green peppers, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and mayonnaise. Chicken quesadilla - 4 stars - A flour tortilla was filled with shredded chicken, cheese, onions, and peppers. The ingredients were very fresh, but the quesadilla tasted slightly plain even with the sides of guacamole and sour cream, so I dipped it in queso. Veggie quesadilla - 5 stars - A flour tortilla was stuffed with yellow cheese, green peppers, and onions. On the side were pico de gallo, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. I really liked the gooey cheese and the flavors of the vegetables. Soft tacos - 4.5 stars - My husband ate these tacos. One was filled with chicken, and the other was filled with pork. He seemed to enjoy them. Plantains - 5 stars - These fried plantains tasted very sweet, and they were topped with some cheese. The serving size was generous. Tres leches cake - 5 stars - A large slice of cake was soaked in three milks and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. I really enjoyed the taste of the sweet cake and the spicy cinnamon.

I tried several items, including the brown stew chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, and the beef patties. The brown stew chicken was delicious. I got it in the large size and it was indeed quite large. The chicken is seasoned well but not too spicy. It's tender, and although I tend not to like dark meat, I really enjoyed it from this place. They served it with potatoes, which were nicely cooked, and carrots, which went really well with the sauce. You get 2 sides with your meal so I choose the rice with peas and the cabbage. The cabbage was very flavorful and just tasted homey. Several other vegetables mixed in too. They gave me a ton of rice and peas, which is great because I thought it was delicious. Soft rice, especially with the chicken, just mixed perfectly. Delicious, delicious, delicious. The beef patties were also very tasty. The inside is in a way almost creamy. It's filled with juicy meat, and the outside stayed nice and crisp. Very nice. All in all, definitely a great place. One of the better Caribbean spots in Pittsburgh for sure.
