They had vendors, arts and crafts, music and, sandcastle lessons, and a drum circle I participated in poetry writing and painting a Roseate Spoonbill bird in water color. I stepped out of my comfort level and skill set today!! Local published poets, Naomi Shahib Nye and Jim Boone ran the group for poetry writing; Naomi read one of my poems to the crowd; they applauded and she told me to take a bow!! WOW! I was shocked I have a video of Naomi reading my poem to the crowd but video is too big to post on this forum ... also have a video of my friend playing in the drum circle Fun day!

We went in and got some amazing pictures. Then a rude person who called himself the Executive Assistant of the Director came out and basically accused us of trespassing. He treated us as if we were interlopers and made it clear that no one can come in unless they are part of an institution and we were not welcome there. We would never have come in if we weren't invited. We're an older couple and didn't deserve to be treated so rudely. We've passed the building a lot of times and now will think of this rude individual and look away in the future.

There is a fairly large boardwalk over the first part of the marsh area, then a raised path that takes you around the property. I saw a lot of migratory birds, especially ducks. Also local natives like egrets, herons, hawks, and caracaras. The ducks were mostly black bellied whistling ducks which are pretty common coastal ducks but also blue wing and green wing teal, shovelers, mallards and mottled ducks.

We were checking out stores in the Strand and my brother happened to see NIA Cultural Center. We went inside (there were 11 of us) and Lawanda took her time to give us a complete and immersive tour. We learned so much about our history and Juneteenth that we never even knew. We heard stories about people we never heard of before. She kept adding more and more to our tour and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment! If you ever have an opportunity to stop in and take a tour, it is so worth it. The entire experience was free and you come away yearning to know more. I did not ask for Lawanda's permission to post a picture, so I am loading one where she is not clearly seen. I have really enjoyed what the Galveston Historical Foundation has offered recently. I sailed on…read morethe Elissa in April. And yesterday I celebrated Mothers Day in grand style with it. I attended the brunch which was held at the Garten Verein. It was decorated nicely. The grounds and building were well kept and lovely. The food was pretty good. The beverages bottomless. Missed a dessert. Loved the sweet little corsage and the Mother's Day gift of a petite candle. It really was a nice event and we met some nice people at our table who we got to see later when standing in line for the homes tour. On that note- took in the homes tour. I hadn't done this for 20 years or so and homes are much different with all the new moneyflitting about. Outside homes are historic but once inside they have been transformed. Nothing inside is old Galveston or even the US. Great place to see what today's decorators have done. They are beautiful but for nostalgia- I think I'm just going to enjoy the homes from the outside. Interesting sign of the times and the nouveau riche.

Conveniently located at Church and 22nd streets in downtown Galveston, I don't know of a better…read morestorage situation on the island. All storage units are "high and dry" on the 2nd floor or higher so you don't have to worry about hurricane flood waters. This sturdy old building has withstood many a hurricane and storm. Security here is excellent. You get a keypad code that allows you access anytime between 8 am and 8 pm, 7 days. You can't enter without your unique key code, and there are security cameras monitoring the entrances to the building. You can either park in the alley and load through a large roll-up door, or you can punch your key code into the entrance gate and park in a secure, fenced area for a more secure situation. This fenced area also has a small covered portico that allows you to back under and stay dry if it is raining. The building is fully sprinklered for fire protection, and has central heat and air conditioning, a must here in south Texas. The only drawback is there is only one elevator. That has never been a problem for me because I've never had to wait on the elevator, but if it ever breaks down that would make things very challenging.
