Last time I reviewed Dr David Segars was nine years ago and at that time been a patient for 15 years. Im pushing 25 years with Doctor Segars and have had excellent care. He has a great personality and explains everything. I think his experience as an Air Force Flight Surgeon is part of the reason he's an excellent MD. Keeping fighter pilots physically fit means he has a vast amount of knowledge about medical conditions. Still five stars for both Doctors and the front desk. read more

I have been a patient of David Segars for at least 30 years. He is attentive, caring, listens, does a fine physical exam and directs my overall health care with the proper specialists. I am able to make timely appointments and my prescriptions are promptly forwarded to the pharmacy. He recommends ways to improve my health. His office staff is friendly and welcoming. I fear the day he retires because I will need to find another doc as good as he is. He also treated my mother for many years before she passed. David Segars, the worst doctor i've ever met. Incompetent. I told him my ailment as well as the severity of it and how it effects me in every thing i do. He just prescribed me hydrocortisone when i asked him to refer me to a specialist. When i saw a specialist i found on my own, he said that i should've had surgery months ago. My family have been patients of Segars and Segars for over 40 years. Dr. Hoke Segars was our family primary physician and we cannot say enough kind words about him. He helped me through my back surgery at St. Mary's, realized I was in need of immediate appendix surgery, and helped my father stay healthy into his early eighty's. When Dr. Hoke retired, my father, who is now 86 years old, was then instructed to see Dr. David Segars [ Dr. Hoke's brother ]. In all honesty, I cannot pay Dr. David the same compliments. Over the last few years, my father developed some heart issues that went completely undetected by Dr. David Segars. When my father complained of pain, and breathing issues, he was told by his not so friendly front desk to go down town and take a covid test. My father protested to no avail. While he was in the office, Dr. David Segars did not even come out to even say a quick hello or personally check on my father. My father did what he was told, drove to Cesar Chavez street across town and took the test. He waited several days and still no results. My father became more ill over time and his breathing became impaired. During this week of waiting for a result, he did not even receive a single phone call from Dr. Segars or his staff. To be blunt; they could have cared less about my father's well being. Eventually, my father became so ill that we had to rush him to the emergency where he underwent an emergency cardioversion procedure and they also had over 1 liter of fluid removed from his lungs. I am happy to report that months later, my 86 year old father is almost completely recovered. That being said, according to the doctors at St. Mary's, what my father went through could have been completed avoidable with proper preventative measures such as the prescribing of a simple and low dose heart regulating medication. This is the type of medication he is currently on and he is doing great. We are lucky he is alive and that the emergency physicians were so professional at St. Mary's. We will never return to Dr. Segars' office and it is quite sad that after years of loyal patronage, my father is still hopelessly waiting for a phone call from an office that he was so very loyal to for so many years. read more

Hoke is the first doctor that I've ever been to that is thorough, polite and does NOT rush me out the door for the next patient. Finding a doctor this great in todays fucked up healthcare system is golden. Now if only I could find a mechanic in San Francisco this good and honest? I was in search of a new doctor a while back as I was not meshing well with mine. She was a great doctor, but was a little too "motherly". A friend of mine was raving to me about Segars & Segars, so I decided to switch on over. That proved to be a good move. Everyone there is extremely nice and really wants to make sure you are comfortable and get the care you need. I have seen Dr. Hoke Segars and Dr. Shu. Both are very attentive and do a great job explaining what they are doing and what is going on. I have never waited too long and was never rushed out the door. Not only are the doctors great.... the staff is amazing as well. Everyone is so nice. I recently tore a muscle off the bone. I was referred to a specialist and he told me that I would get an MRI soon. So far, nothing yet. I called and spoke with Kelly and she quickly went to work to rectify the situation. She found out that the order for my MRI wasn't submitted and called the specialist to make sure that the order gets put out immediately. She will call me when this gets done. She went above and beyond and I am extremely appreciative for her help! read more

Great family doctor. Great guy. Easy to talk with. Easy to understand. Doesn't dumb anything down and makes everything totally understandable so you can absorb everything in. I'm pretty sure he has lollipops somewhere in the office but I'm pretty sure they are for the little fellas that come with their parents. I was recommended by a friend because I moved out to the neighborhood a couple of years ago. So here I am, a doctor that is outside of Kaiser...Soo much better. It's like night and day! The one star off is for this one person that works there...Not sure what her name is but she is loud and looks like she uses the make-up gun that Homer invented for Marge made from a shotgun. I have been seeing Dr. Hoke Segars for the last 5 years. He is experienced and has a wonderful bedside manner. He avoids speaking in medical jargon and just gives me the facts. I have seen him for everything, from a flu shot to broken bones. I have never left feeling like my medical condition went unattended. To date I have recommended half a dozen people to his practice and those that have taken my recommendation, have all had a similar response. Dr. David Segars has been my and my husband's primary care doctor for over 10 years. I have referred him to many of my work friends, and they all love him. He is an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable doctor, and has a calm and gentil approach. I also like to chit chat with him, and he has a good sense of humor. Incredibly unprofessional staff. I've been seeing Dr. Segars for a few years now and my recent visit with them convinced me to never go back again. I've been complaining of pain for a few weeks now and I was penciled in to come into the office to visit a few weeks from when I called. When I arrived at the office for my appointment, I was quickly re-directed out of it. Apparently, I they never wrote down my appointment and it was as if I didnt schedule anything. I tried booking a new appointment with them, but they didnt want to speak and rushed me out. Now I'm without a doctor and in a lot of pain. The staff there had no empathy to patient issues and were more concerned with getting me out of their office as soon as possible. Would NEVER come back here again. read more

My appointment was at 3:30. The receptionist on the phone was very clear about arriving 15 minutes early, so I showed up at 3:15, checked in, no indication the doctor was running late. ONE HOUR LATER, I'm still in the waiting room. I can clearly hear the receptionists making personal phone calls and chatting about their personal lives the entire time. Finally, I walk up to the window and politely remind them my appointment was at 3:30. The receptionist then informs me the doctor is running late. As if I didn't realize, after sitting in the waiting room for an hour. The doctor himself is nice enough. I can't really speak to this bc I didn't come for anything too complicated. 2 stars though for making me waste an hour of my life in a stuffy, cramped waiting room. read more

I'm giving this office one star because Dr. Segars himself is a competent and generally helpful doctor. But the staff at this place is so rude and unhelpful it completely cancels out any positive care from the doctor himself. I had been a patient of Dr. Segars for 35 years and tried my very best to hang in there despite the alarming decline in quality of the front desk staff, but it's gone too far. If I leave a vm asking for help, I never get a call back unless I call back again to protest. If I go in person to the office to get some necessary information from my medical record (I have a complex medical history), they tell me to go online even though I've already told them that my online 'mychart' is completely blank. The last straw for me was when they finally notified me I could pick up a copy of records I needed and because I got there 5 minutes into the 'lunch hour' they told me they couldn't help me and I had to come back when it wasn't lunch...and this was after I'd alerted the staff the week prior the day and time I would come by to pick up the documents. And if I, God forbid, press them to try a little harder to problem solve and help me find a solution, they basically give me a "f- off" look and literally turn away from the service counter so they don't have to deal with me. It's very clear they don't care, and it's not okay. read more

Hoke Segars has been my physician for over 15 years. I really appreciate his thoughtful and patient style of medical care. Appointments are easy to schedule, calls are always returned and good healthcare is delivered. I feel comfortable with the Dr. Segars, because he takes the time to listen. My grandparents have going to see Dr. Segar since 1994. I put the 4* for my grandparents but I really wanted to write a review on the front desk person. The waiting room (it's small) was full of patients and everyone could hear the receptionist (?), Kelly, speaking with a patient on the phone. It was obvious she was getting frustrated and annoyed with the patient. I kept thinking, "don't do it- don't do it". Sure enough, when she hung up, she started talking smack about the patient to the other office personnel. Everyone in the room was looking towards the window like "Are you kidding?" Newsflash- although she told the other personnel that the patient on the phone should "go to another doctor", I'm sure the doctors in the practice (as well as the patients that can hear you) would appreciate giving out some sensitive, caring, and professional patient care. read more

With his retirement, I've transitioned to David Shu, and he's equally attentive and nice. sadly my experience with the front office team has forced me to revise my original 5 star rating. it's now been three weeks since my appointment for the blood work & tests and the office has not been able to deliver my complete results; there is one final result still needed to satisfy my visa requirements. these test results were originally promised me at one week. i've had to repeatedly call the office for the status of this test and today have just been informed that they "are trying to find" my results. presumably this is a step in the right direction since before their excuse has been "waiting for the results from the lab." and now i'm learning that the original request from the office was not completed by the lab so i must return for another sample. VERY FRUSTRATING. i'm an understanding fellow, but come on. read more

Last Sunday I was driving myself to the emergency room for (food poisoning?) diarrhea for four days when I decided to call my GP doctor Dave Segars MD instead. The office was closed for the weekend but his voice mail did leave the option of paging him. This situation was excrutiating so I did. An hour or so later Dr. Dave returned my called to find out what was going on. I explained nearly 5 days of diarrhea & have lost around 8 lbs. Dr. Dave gave me a diagnosis on the phone, called in a prescription to my Walgreen's pharmacy and got me started right away. I was so happy Dr Dave called me back, and got me started on the medication. I went to his office the next day and have subsequently dropped off a sample at the LAB across the street from his office on Ocean Ave, Today makes day 5 on antibiotics and I'm happy to say Dr Dave got my digestive tract back to normal. Not only did he help me on his weekend retreat but he made a perfect diagnosis and saved me an entire Sunday in the ER. Dr. Segars has been my physician for some time. I'm happy to say he's a happy to help his patients kind of MD. He's a deep thinker with lot's of expertise & experience. This situation goes on the list of excellent diagnosis over the years that Dr. Dave has made. His entire office staff is kind and on the ball. Simply put you won't find a kinder, great listener & knowledgeable General Practioner than Dr Dave Segars. Thanks again as usual for saving my butt, sanity & a visit to the good ol' ER. Dr. Hoke Segars makes visiting the doctor something I actually look forward to. He listens well, is very empathetic, and is a joy to talk to because he wants to understand who he is serving. I've never felt rushed in his office (unlike HMOs, where they have a time limit that they can spend with you, and you can feel that pressure.) I've been seeing him for over 15 years. I've also seen Dr. David Segars, and more recently Dr. David Chiu, who is taking on Dr. Hoke's patient load as he starts to scale back. The office staff are also very nice and totally efficient. I've been a patient of Dr. Hoke's for a couple of years and am really happy with this office. Dr. hoke listens to me and always gives his honest opinion. Kelly has always been helpful, I've had a couple of problems with billing and she has gotten everything resolved very quickly and is always really nice when I come in the office. I have noticed how thoughtful she is and always goes above and beyond her call of duty. Angelina is also super helpful. I truly appreciate how both Kelly and Angelina can deal with difficult patients in a calm, diplomatic, and professional manner. read more

I've gone to Dr. David Segar for many years and I am constantly impressed with the excellent customer service with the office and adore Dr. D! I trust him completely and love the fact that I don't have to go anywhere to have my blood test taken for the annual check ups. The wait time has always been short except when I'm late and even then it's short! The beauty of this Dr's office is that they have been open on Holidays as well. This office is not technically updated therefore saving the trees. If you're looking for a great doctor's office (Dr. Hoke Segar and Dr. Shu are also fantastic!) I'd try these Dr's and you won't be disappointed with their service and knowledge. read more

Great doctor, but they need to work on getting back to you with test results. They do not call when they say the results will be ready. Several days and voice messages later, I finally get ahold of my blood test results. This is not the first time they have not gotten back to me as promised. They seem to have a large front desk staff. Why couldn;t they just have one of them follow up on test results with the patients? read more

Don't confuse Dr David Segars with his brother Dr Hoke Segars, who may be a very fine doctor but I only know and love Dr David. Dr Segars was recommended to me by my own mother, which is a great comment about him all by itself. He has a very gentle and kindly demeanor, and great examination-table-side manner. He seems to know his medical material and to have good knowledge of things even outside his general medicine practice. He is knowledgeable and caring, and has a nice and appealing sense of humor. I have been with him for several years, and in turn have recommended him to others. His current office building has its own parking lot in the usually busy but upscale Merced Manor area (Ocean & 19th ave). His offices are pleasant and clean, and the staff has generally been friendly and personable with one exception of a person we thought was a little derisive in the hallway by the elevator, but perhaps we mistook her stiff smile for a smirk. Otherwise, the staff has always been competent and appropriate with me, and another person I took to see Dr Segars loved him as well. I strongly recommend you see Dr Segars, I personally consider myself lucky that he's my primary care doc. read more

Dr. David Segar is the best GP I have ever found. I can't speak for the others in the office, but I'm sure they're great too. I am so happy I found him and I refer him to my friends in the city. I had to deal with extreme back pain and not only did he help my immediate needs, he knew the best spine surgeon in the west to direct me to. Dr. David Segars is cool, a good listener and knows what he's talking about.

He's nice enough. The office has been fine for me. I've seen him 3 times. First, he diagnosed my excruciating sore throat as a bacterial infection and the amoxicillin he prescribed didn't do anything for 2 days. Not his fault, but when I called back to ask for something stronger, there was a bit of a runaround with getting another prescription. I did get one, and eventually the infection cleared up, but it had been so long that I can't tell if it went away on its own and the infection was really viral in which case I wasted $20 on useless antibiotics, or whether the abx did anything. The second time, my foot had hurt so much I could barely put pressure on it. It had improved when they could get me in but his big advice was buy some Dr. Scholls. I asked if I should see a podiatrist or some other specialist and he thought it was a good idea. First of all, shouldn't he be suggesting that? Second of all, I kind of felt like he thought I was a whiner, not a person who has to walk 2 miles a day round trip to get to work and was really bothered by this condition. For my third visit, I had my pre-40-year-old checkup and brought a nicely organized list of issues (not separate ones, mostly grouped by the theme of joint and muscle pain, things I didn't go into in my 2 previous visits b/c he said I should specifically schedule a separate visit for these), and he didn't look at my list, he asked me to read off the list and then talked so I would have to interrupt him to get back to my list. His big diagnosis is I'm just getting older and his advice was to learn to stretch more, eat right, and live with the pain. Really? Not every one of my other 40-year-old friends have constant foot, knee, hip, back, shoulder, and wrist pains. I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining this. As part of the physical I had blood tests and he never called me back to discuss them like he said he would even though my results came in high for LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. I had to log on to the provider network website to realize for myself that results came in. Finally, when my husband had his 40-year physical with Dr. Shu at the same office, he had an EKG reading done as a part of a baseline for future comparison. The nurse initially brought me into a room and was setting me up for the same thing. Then she switched rooms and when Dr. Hoke saw me, he didn't do the EKG. I would have mentioned it but it slipped my mind. But it shouldn't slip his mind, or if he wasn't going to do it, he should have explained why. Now I have to take time out of my day to call back, get to the bottom of it, possibly schedule another appointment, and hope insurance doesn't mistakenly count it as a second physical visit and then charge me extra and have to work that out, all because the process was sloppy and the doctor kind of doesn't seem to take me seriously. I'm busy, I wouldn't call or go in unless I thought it was necessary, and I think he kind of thinks my concerns are a joke. 3 stars because he's friendly enough and the office was functional and I guess he has lots of experience, but minus 1 star for the kind of dismissive attitude and minus 1 star for skipping part of my physical and inconveniencing me. read more

Dr David is the best. I have been going to him since 1993 when I first moved to San Francisco. I was very lucky on my first pick from a list of physcians from my first healthcare plan. Even though my jobs have changed I have always selected the PPO option at each job so that I could keep Dr David as my primary care physcian. I give him my highest recommendation. read more

I've seen some so-so reviews on his staff and I completely disagree. They are efficient, quick and their follow up has been good whenever I've requested anything from them. This medical office was recommended to us by a friend. Sadly, my family has had an unpleasant experience with billing and Dr. David Segars's unresponsiveness. An unnecessary procedure was performed and the doctor assured the patient that it would be covered by insurance. However, insurance came back declining coverage. Dr. Segars did not respond at all or try to rectify the issue after numerous attempts of contact/inquiry by the patient through the front office. It was unbelievable. Will discontinue relationship with this doctor's office for their unresponsiveness and unfair practice. read more
