Seigo neckties may seem a splurge in this era, but they're worth it! Silk patterns (some in motifs) of highest quality, kimono-grade silk, hand made in Japan and lately sold only at a single Carnegie Hill boutique. My favorite is a forest green basketweave number with multi color "dots" (each a tiny "x" of two strands of thread) -- suitable for wear over Christmas holiday. Seigo neckwear makes stunningly sharp ties from kimono silk, each numbered and made in very limited quantities so you can be sure you're buying a unique design. The designs themselves are not radical, but just have sharper colors and are more nicely made than typical brand name ties. The great thing is that at $80 for a regular necktie, and only around $65 for a bow tie, they are no more expensive than the full price of cookie cutter designer ties. Also, I should say that the service at Seigo is really really nice! Memo to Seigo, though. Fantastic selection, very personal service (not bad considering I was wearing flip flops), and the shop is immaculate. If you're tall, they have your size. I seem to be finding a lot of places in New York where I think "Why doesn't DC have something like this?!" Seigo is no different. A tiny box of a store with an amazing selection. As far as I know all of their ties and bow ties are Japanese made specifically for them. Meaning that your tie will be unique and of the highest quality. Finding this out I expected the damn things to cost an arm and a leg, but the price was actually very reasonable ($50 for the black bow tie I got). Some of the ties can be a bit conservative, but they also have more up to date collections as well. Best part? They offered to take photos of the ties that I'm interested in and shipped them to me in DC if I can't get down to New York. read more

He described Seigo as being his heaven, and so will I now that I won't have to search for places to buy his birthday gifts anymore! A small shop with incredible help - being that there are usually only a few customers, the staff will spend all of the time in the world with you. The selection of ties is absurd, especially because all are handmade and part of limited edition collections. There is one section of ties that Seigo ALWAYS manufactures which are more classic, simple and traditional color combinations. Seigo's limited edition ties however are what makes it worth the trip uptown. They make 6 of each tie pattern, and every tie has a marking on the back reporting which of the 6 it is. My dad loved knowing that his favorite tie was '3 of 6' or that the one I gave him for his bday was last, the 6th of only 6. The other great part about Seigo - having a wedding anytime soon? I found the staff rather cold and unkind. I did not find enough variety in the tie selection. For example I was looking for cotton or cashmere bow ties and they did not carry a single one. This store is a jewel and the shopping experience is an antidote from the mediocre to poor service that seems to be the norm in many brick and mortar stores. The quality of these hand made ties is superb and the designs - and there are many - and colors are distinctive. They have customers from all over the world but I promise that when you walk it, you will feel like they have been waiting for you. They also have a large assortment of bow ties, some cummerbunds, suspenders and absolutely sensational women's hats. The ties are less expensive than the bland, high end ones found in the usual suspect men's stores, but pack a lot more punch. As we were deciding, they told us about the materials that they use to make their products as well as that each fabric design is only used a couple of times so your guaranteed to be buying something unique.
