The quality is exceptional, and considering the craftsmanship involved, the pricing is more than reasonable. What truly sets this place apart, however, is the world-class customer service. Shopping here feels personal, thoughtful, and never rushed. Seigo Katsuragawa's story is as compelling as his products. After moving from Tokyo to New York and studying at FIT, he spent years supplying ties to iconic retailers like Paul Stuart and Barneys before launching his own brand in 1992. That experience clearly shows in the refined balance between Japanese craftsmanship and American style. The ties themselves are works of art. The silk is woven in small mills in Kyoto using looms traditionally reserved for kimono fabrics, they are also hand-sewn in Japan. Each design is produced in extremely limited quantities--often only eight or twelve worldwide--and individually numbered. The result is a tie that feels genuinely special, with beautiful, vibrant patterns you simply won't see elsewhere. Silk patterns (some in motifs) of highest quality, kimono-grade silk, hand made in Japan and lately sold only at a single Carnegie Hill boutique. My favorite is a forest green basketweave number with multi color "dots" (each a tiny "x" of two strands of thread) -- suitable for wear over Christmas holiday. This is a store where you walk in, mutter "wow" under your breath, and vow to return with your wife to share in the glory of the beauty of these ties. So that's what we did. We bought a floral print tie and a really fun pocket square with nine different patterns. ~$90 for a quality necktie is a good deal. There's great customer service too. These are the most beautiful ties I have ever found. And over the past 20 years I have purchased a goodly number of them for my husband. This boutique is of incredible quality. All the ties are of the most high grade Japanese silk, with immaculate patterns, made meticulously. I would be hard pressed to come up with any other merchant anywhere in the US who offers neckties of this quality, and selection. I absolutely love Seigo Neckties and Bow ties. There's nothing like Japanese silk, too! Seigo also does an amazing job with colors and patterns. Needless to say, I always find what I'm looking for in their vast collection. Years ago, I bought my first ever bow tie from Seigo and I've never stopped shopping there. In fact, I still have my first (Seigo) bow tie and it's in great condition. And I still love its unique pattern. Most recently, I returned to the shop to buy some striped bow ties. Seigo neckwear makes stunningly sharp ties from kimono silk, each numbered and made in very limited quantities so you can be sure you're buying a unique design. The designs themselves are not radical, but just have sharper colors and are more nicely made than typical brand name ties. The great thing is that at $80 for a regular necktie, and only around $65 for a bow tie, they are no more expensive than the full price of cookie cutter designer ties. Also, I should say that the service at Seigo is really really nice! Memo to Seigo, though. Stock some ugly ties and the nice ones will stand out more!:-) Now a word for those of you who love someone who wears bow ties: don't you be ashamed, grasshopper. These ties are striking. I was in town for a wedding and forgot to bring a tie. Brought five pairs of shoes, of course, but no tie. Typical. Anyway, found this place reviewed on Time Out New York and meandered across the Park from our hotel and found this little gem of a shop. Fantastic selection, very personal service (not bad considering I was wearing flip flops), and the shop is immaculate. If you're tall, they have your size. Hermes couldn't be bothered with their machine-made, overpriced rags. I walked out with "No. 2 of 8" for less than a hundred bucks. Not too shabby. read more

I have been coming to Seigo for many years now, buying ties for myself and as gifts for others. Their ties are all handmade in Japan, and their beautiful designs are completely unique. I've never worn one of their ties without getting a compliment. They range in price, but the last time I was in there (Jan 2015), most of their neckties were in the $90 range or so. When you consider the quality of their products, this is not an unreasonable price! The sales staff are all top-notch. They're willing to spend time with you, taking out all sorts of ties and holding them up against various color shirts. I had a tie that I had purchased here many years ago that had a few threads come loose. I brought it in and the store's manager fixed it while I shopped! Great place if you're looking for a specific type of tie, or if you just want to browse. The best thing about this place is they have a very extensive selection. I came because I needed a blue bow tie to match my (blue) wedding tuxedo - I went to a couple of other places, but none had anything in the same shade of blue. The saleswoman at Seigo quickly picked out several options that matched exactly - both solid and patterned - and helped me choose. The tie also appears and feels high quality. I seem to be finding a lot of places in New York where I think "Why doesn't DC have something like this?!" Seigo is no different. A tiny box of a store with an amazing selection. As far as I know all of their ties and bow ties are Japanese made specifically for them. Meaning that your tie will be unique and of the highest quality. Finding this out I expected the damn things to cost an arm and a leg, but the price was actually very reasonable ($50 for the black bow tie I got). Some of the ties can be a bit conservative, but they also have more up to date collections as well. Best part? They offered to take photos of the ties that I'm interested in and shipped them to me in DC if I can't get down to New York. read more

A business man's dream. I live in the area and took my father here when he was visiting me. He described Seigo as being his heaven, and so will I now that I won't have to search for places to buy his birthday gifts anymore! A small shop with incredible help - being that there are usually only a few customers, the staff will spend all of the time in the world with you. The selection of ties is absurd, especially because all are handmade and part of limited edition collections. There is one section of ties that Seigo ALWAYS manufactures which are more classic, simple and traditional color combinations. Seigo's limited edition ties however are what makes it worth the trip uptown. They make 6 of each tie pattern, and every tie has a marking on the back reporting which of the 6 it is. My dad loved knowing that his favorite tie was '3 of 6' or that the one I gave him for his bday was last, the 6th of only 6. The other great part about Seigo - having a wedding anytime soon? You can work with them to manufacture a limited edition tie JUST for your wedding party. Pretty sweet, huh? read more

I have about 20 of Seigo's limited series ties and 5 of his bow ties. They are the best. They even did a few special requests for me and I must say they "ROCK!!!!" Over the years, I've bought my lady friends a few of their scarfs and they loved them. The service was excellent at the two stores on the Upper East Side is superb and very helpful. Unbelievable service and selection of ties. Seigo was recommended to my partner and I. We are in NY for a couple of days and getting married back in LA. The hardest part of our wedding planning has been finding a tie. We made the stop and was in heaven from the moment we walked in. I found the staff rather cold and unkind. I did not find enough variety in the tie selection. For example I was looking for cotton or cashmere bow ties and they did not carry a single one. Also the ties seemed a bit bland and overpriced. Overall, they need to hire new staff who smile more and are more engaging with people. I won't be coming back. read more

This store is a jewel and the shopping experience is an antidote from the mediocre to poor service that seems to be the norm in many brick and mortar stores. The quality of these hand made ties is superb and the designs - and there are many - and colors are distinctive. They have customers from all over the world but I promise that when you walk it, you will feel like they have been waiting for you. They also have a large assortment of bow ties, some cummerbunds, suspenders and absolutely sensational women's hats. The ties are less expensive than the bland, high end ones found in the usual suspect men's stores, but pack a lot more punch. I noticed this place while walking by one day and made a mental note to take my husband who is a daily wearer of ties, bow ties and pocket squares. We finally made it in the other day and were both blown away by the selection (especially the bow ties) and quality. The service was great as they quickly helped my husband pick out a bow tie and matching pocket square in the colors he was looking for. As we were deciding, they told us about the materials that they use to make their products as well as that each fabric design is only used a couple of times so your guaranteed to be buying something unique. The prices were also surprisingly resonable (especially given the fact that your shopping on Madison Ave.) For both the reversable bow tie and pocket square the total was about $115. read more
