Instead, Gayle and I took the train from Venice to Bolzano/Bozen and then let our SAD bus do the driving as we traveled to Casterotto/Kastelruth, back and forth each day to Alpe di Suisi/Seiser Alm, and finally returning to Bolzano/Bozen for our next train journey. The SAD system covers transport in the South Tyrol and includes a complete interconnection using buses and trains. SAD also operates several cable cars and a Mobilcard is available for frequent travelers. Gayle and I paid at either the Bus Station in Bolzano/Bozen or on the Bus itself at a fare of 4 Euros each (one way). Our Alpe di Suisi days were paid for as part of our Combi Card which included our daily rides on the Seiseralm Bergbahn Cable Car. Both Gayle and I were impressed with the comfort or our ride, the friendly local bus drivers, their skill in driving as we curved around in spots, and the fact that the buses ran on time. I'll chalk that up to a German efficiency overlay to the more suggestive nature of Italian time. So even though Gayle and I might be in a car the next time we come to the Dolomites, we will always be aware that SAD will be there as a viable alternative or supplement to our South Tyrol transportation needs.

I arrived on a Sunday. Little did I know, everything's closed on Sundays. After checking into the hotel, my husband and I walked straight over to the cable car only to see that it was closed for maintenance. The Innsbruck cable car takes you from the city center to the top of the Nordkette mountain for spectacular views. Since it was closed, there was no one to ask if there were other ways up...it was a bit of a let down, so we just walked back to town and had lunch.

The views are can…read morebe pretty from the cable car but I wouldn't obsess about taking pictures as the views from the top of the mountain are absolutely gorgeous, without having to worry about the dirty glass of the windows interfering with your pictures. I'm not afraid of heights but I was with a few people who were. For people who are afraid of heights, I will say that the ride is pretty smooth and short. I have definitely been on other cable cars that were a lot more shaky. It's more of a vertical assent at an angle so you're not going to see a lot of variation. Things are just going to get a lot smaller as you go up. The view from the top of the mountain is worth the trip. It is like stepping into a painting. Any photos you take with a high quality camera are going to look like postcards. There is a dining area on the second floor if you're so inclined. I was there in the middle of June and it was still a little chilly at that altitude so if you do get cold easily, I would bring a jacket. I really recommend checking this out if you're in the area.
